It's also worth mentioning that Austin has a family history of schizophrenia, specifically on his dad's side.
At the time of this incident, Austin was 19, and the average time of schizophrenic symptoms appear in men is in the late teens to early 20s. Add in that schizophrenia is genetically inherited and those predisposed to schizophrenia commonly sort of break loose those symptoms when they go on drugs (even if they had no symptoms of it beforehand), and it's extremely likely that Austin was not alright in the head for a long time before this.
Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are also linked. If someone has family history of schizophrenia they also need to be screened for bipolar disorder and vice versa. Thus, it's also likely that Austin may suffer from both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. This can only be confirmed by a professional though.
Suffice to say, with the family history plus finding out that Austin was using drugs plus finding that Austin wasn't getting any better after becoming sober, his family should have done something faster. They should have taken the situation more seriously. From the moment Austin returned home, he wasn't in his right mind and needed emergency help.

The parents were so negligent, all the signs that this guy was nuts and needed to be dealt with and they waited til something absolutely horrific happened. Not gonna lie, I thought of bath salts as soon as they mentioned Florida too lol. I really wish the couple were a lot more aware of how different the world is now. You can't be hanging out with your door open and any ol body can just walk up into your space. There are too many crazies out here who are either looking for potential victims or act out because no one is monitoring them. I'm so sad they lost their life after looking forward to their golden years together. He went from wanting to help people to hurting (and killing) people. I feel like a LOT of people dropped the ball on this one and now so many lives are filled with trauma over this...
So well put. That is true, too many times the ball was dropped with him. All in a short time frame, he gave his friends, sister and parents some weird "WTF" moments in life and none of them acted on it =(

Crazy story. I believe the guy. Imagine drinking vegetable oil, it would make you sick in the stomach. And then he downs a bottle of lawn chemicals and thought it was a soda. It's like his senses were deaden. And his family were not as worried as they should be

Most of my neighbors are even more active than I am. Please don't feel like I'm coming at you, I'm not. I just enjoy learning about how others see and experience the world.

I fully believe that there are dormant mental illnesses within individuals that are only triggered by depression and substance abuse. It’s proven on here and from the experience I’ve seen with my family members. It’s honestly sad how a person you love can go from 0-100 so quickly 🥺

Yeah, theres people that go schizophrenic after doing heavy hallucinogenic drugs like mdma or even shrooms. It triggers a dormant mental illness if the person was predisposed or at risk of it happening to them bur afaik its very rare. Theres a popular youtuber that this happened to after doing Ayahuasca
I agree with you. This is exactly why I never experimented beyond good old THC. Nearly everyone in my family who experimented past that point is dead, either from overdoses or suicide, and they each had unstable mental health that seemed to worsen overtime. The ones who aren’t dead do still deal extensively with mental illness, including an uncle of mine who now lives with psychosis that he takes medicine to treat. I’m actually a recovered alcoholic myself and those years of drinking definitely made an evident change I feel that has lingered even long after I quit. I’ve always dealt with not-great mental health, but I’ve since become a bit more paranoid and anxious in my thinking, I believe, and more prone to mood swings, bouts of depression or very mild mania, etc. I just know well enough to know that some people aren’t meant to mess with their brain chemistry too much, and I firmly believe I’m one of those people. I just wish more people were wise to this and took it into consideration before experimenting with substances or enabling others to do so.

I remember when I had a deep depressive episode, suicidal thought and anxiety. I always abused caffeine and alcohol. This doesn't sound strange because I would always hear voices when I was sleeping or legit see creatures on the wall at night.
Someone saw me walking alone and said I looked like I am walking with a group of people. I had a tendency of moving and talking alone. It was crazy.
I cannot even imagine what happens when you abuse a cocktail of drugs that heavily mess up with the chemicals in the brain.
Drugs weren't the root cause. His traumas of being "bulli3d" cause him to feel inadequate and he probably fell into depression. Depression chemicals alone can alter your brain forever (e.g. make you forgetful). Imagine adding drugs in the mix to alter the chemicals produced in the brain.

Struggle a lot with depression/suicidal thoughts since childhood so I gravitate towards funny people to take my mind off things, and you help a LOT with that. How do you continue as normal when someone is telling you there are demons in the house and does patrols? He literally tried to test his immortality and instead of rushing him to the hospital you still sit down at a restaurant. The vegetable oil took me out…she sent him back to the damn restaurant!
Well there is proof that there are „demons“, you might not believe it, but when you look into the supernatural world, it’s not uncommon that it’s either demons in your house or well hallucinations.

I just hope Austin gets no form of punishment whatsoever, and gets the help he needed all along. He was clearly suffering from psychosis when he killed the couple. He was tased, KICKED in the face several times and had his armed shredded by a dog's fangs, and he didn't once stop his attack. He was clearly completely out of his mind at that moment. You can't fake that. I'm really sorry for the couple, but I am as sorry for Austin. It's the first time I feel such pity for a "murderer" and one of the very few instances where innocent for reason of insanity sounds completely fair.

The level of negligence on the family’s part is just unreal. At least his friends tried to put the dude’s mental health in focus. The family just seemed to keep telling him, basically, “knock it off”. Now he’s where he is and two people are dead.
i thought about the florida zombie bath salts thing too. him drinking weird stuff like vegetable oil, maybe he developed a weird version of pica where the body craves to consume weird things, like rocks, dirt, sand, etc. he ingested alot of chemicals so maybe that helped cause his cravings too?

I feel like way, way too many people in our community are dismissive of these things or just don't understand how mental illness makes a person do the unthinkable, and it's not doing us any good. I am so glad you are out here with these reactions, telling people "this stuff is legitimate. You're helping. You are. I am so happy you exist.
Schizophrenia typically starts especially in males in the late teens to mid-twenties. Same can happen with females. If anyone starts acting like that they need to be seen by a psychiatrist with all the information from family and friends. This is too sad that he fell through the cracks of everything and everyone.

The first time I heard this, my first thought was "schizophrenia." Early twenties is the right age for it to start. If you are prone to it, stimulants (like vyvanse) can trigger it. It's also true that people with schizophrenia are more likely to take illegal drugs as an attempt to self-medicate.
And apparently, he is being treated for schizophrenia in jail. This whole thing is such a tragedy. Worst of all for the victims and their families. But also for Austin and his family. This mild-mannered, kind, smart kid with his whole life ahead of him and a goal of helping people, and this happens? Awful. There's no cure for schizophrenia, either. There are drugs, but they only work for some people, and only for so long. Damn.

I think that some parts of his brain knew what he was doing, the rest of his brain and his body just did stuff, that’s why he wanted them to kill him. He couldn’t control his body. Almost like an outer body experience, where you watch what you do or what is done to you and you can do nothing to stop it. While I feel very sorry and sad for the victims, but as bad as it may sound, I feel the same way about Austin, people, especially his own family failed him, nobody did anything really and he was alone dealing with literal demons.

I'm sorry you are saying both his parents are in the medical field and none of them thought to admit him to a hospital. It's 100% their fault. You can't convince me otherwise.
Also, about mental issues, if you have a mental breakdown from mental depressive stress (a type of depression) your brain will practically break and break away from sanity, but also it will be totally irresponsive and reality becomes blended with nothing and the actual person suffering from the mental breakdown will not have control or know what is happening. This is one of the most aggressive cases I've seen of this though, but it could be because of the amount of drugs Austin was doing. This is kind of a "combo" (I forgot the word for it) as he is suffering from mental/physical disconnect and insanity.
This story made me incredibly sad when I first heard it, it's just a horrible situation...
also I'm not too far into the story yet and I'm already thinking how pissed Charlie is going to be when he sees how apethetic the family was to Austin.

Austin was found not guilty by reason of insanity. His parents are also responsible for what happened. He showed plenty of signs that he was having a psychotic break or something. Hey, if your child starts knocking on your bedroom door every 2 hours all night long, telling you he's protecting you from the demons in the house, you NEED to get him Baker Acted stat. Do not pass go. Get your head out of the sand.
