When leading a horse, take the lead rope and serpentine it like an "S" shape and hold it. If you loop the rope and the horse bolts it can take a hand or finger right off. The "S" shape will slide out of your hand. May get a rope burn but you'll have all of your digits. Advice from a friend of mine.

Lady is a good mare to breed. She isn't too old and is in great health. Breed her back. Society needs to stop humanizing animals. You will do what is best for your animals, you know them best! Blessings to all of you ❤

My opinion is that you and Brenda know Lady's condition. If she's still healthy and sound, by all means rebreed her. As you said a little more income for the farm. Y'all aren't doing this for your health, it's all about income. The farm has to pay it's way. Thanks for letting us tag along today. Enjoyed it.

Jim's correct about health though too. I'm a 63 year old cyclist. There are lots of risks to cycling but I'm still faster than most people of any age. I don't know any under 20's who even come close. Slightly worrying really

Well done on your 'walking with horses' venture. I think your calmness transferred to the horses. It nice to see something different now and again. Great drone footage too. You are very gentle and kind to the horses ..I appreciate Jim has a different approach to 'that sort of thing' but we all know he loves them too. Please don't sell on the fillies ...they will be wonderful together in the future. Wouldn't you be heartbroken if your Bree wasn't around anymore?

Greetings from Ohio. I especially enjoyed watching you with music and information via the drone. You may recall my great grandfather was killed during the raking of the hay back in 1898 in Kansas. I so appreciate your reviewing of that information I sent several years ago and it gave me the opportunity to see first hand what it must have been like. Love the country and since I was raised in Southern California your channel gives me much insite into working with horses doing what so many of my ancestors did in the 1800's. Love watching you both and often so surprised like today seeing Brenda not only walk the horses, keep track of the dog, instruct the beautiful Brea horse all while using the camera. Very enjoyable with my morning coffee. Best to you both.

Jim, I’m a dairy farmer who left the farm because the farm wasn’t big enough for parents and 7 kids. We had horses for riding, but not for working. They assisted in moving heifers and cows to different pastures , but mostly for pleasure. I understand the principle of each component of the farm pulling its own weight, be it horse or cow or piece of machinery. Lady is making her contribution. You, Brenda, and the veterinarian assessed that Lady could carry another foal. Decision made, I can appreciate the care applied in that decision. Looking forward to her giving birth.

Brenda, you did an excellent job leading Earl and Duke down the road to Jim for the horse swap out . My only minor comment is that i wouldn't wrap the lead line around your hand . If something startled the horse going down the road . It could pull back and damage your hand or dislocate your elbow or shoulder. Jim I whole heartily agree with your comment on breeding Lady back to Hardy's Chief. She is a working older draft mare, Lady would be working in harness on the farm or in the woods earning her keep or she also as she's help earning her keep as a great broodmare. Who potentially would provide the farm with an income from a potential sale of her foal down the road.

I was a Hay Dealer for many years bought a lot of hay out Jim's way up thru the finger lakes Oswego etc. met a lot of farmers of all kinds of farming. from livestock to milkers, to beefers, to potato's, Corn only , and each farmer has his own logic to how to run his farm he knows what's best for him and his animals. And most viewers here are probably not of the farming community and don't have a mindset as to the reasoning behind the way each farm /farmer does things. That is why life is a learning curve. open your mind and learn. thanks for sharing Jim and Brenda. nicely done. and God speed. ECF.

For example she was able to put on all the "work clothes" on Earl and then walk him down the road to where Jim was raking a large field of hay !! Then she handed over Earl in exchange for Duke (if I have it right ?) and then walk Duke back to the farm !! I was impressed by not only, Brenda's abilities but her willingness to help out when there's no one else !! I take it that William, is no longer available to help .....? Great video guys and may the good Lord Bless the Gordon family accordingly !! ❤😊

Hi Brenda, same here, horse-flies like never before! I have never put a cover on my horses before, but this summer I had to buy one and put it on as a billion of horseflies are attacking them. Makes it quite a challenge to work with them, they're very un-concentrated. Jim, good words in the end! It reminded me of a saying we have in German, which is "Der Mensch denkt, Gott lenkt"..which is translated sth. like "Man thinks, God directs". That, I want to say, often we think what to do, if it's right or not, and in the end it comes as God will anyway. Maybe not thinking too much if to breed Lady or not but just do what your current feeling is. Wish you a wonderful week and dry hay! 😊☀-Chris

Jim, you know what's best for your horses and your farm. Most people commenting probably don't know much about horses. As a former breeder and owner I can tell Lady is very healthy and is not too old to breed. She has had only two foals thus far, so really she is just getting started as a broodmare. You can still continue to breed her for quite a few more years. As for Bree, don't feel bad that you're not training her. She's only a yearling and really doesn't need to start more training at this time. You have her well trained to lead and other than having her trained to stand for feet trimming, if needed, that is just fine for now, as you well know.

Jim that was very well said about Lady❤ The majority of horses today, just like the majority of people are fairly out of shape. And I'm speaking even of myself and my own animals. I ride nearly daily however compared to when we lived in a more agrarian society everyone is out of shape, both human and equine. I've known mares who have lived a fulfilling and healthy life continuing to have Healthy Babies into their early twenties. We also have to consider that in the wild every mare would be having a baby pretty much every year of their fertile life. Lady is healthier than many of us, after all she's not sitting here watching videos😂

Lady loves having a baby , and I know she would prefer having babies to working hard . She has only had 2 , where other brood mares have babies over and over . I would breed Lady until she shows signs of not doing well . My uncle raised many draft horse foals , and the mares bred until they did not take from breedings any longer . Keep doing what you are doing , your horses are being treated better than most and they are happy !

I am so amazed at how dark Bree has gotten from when she was born. I honestly think she is more Barrons color now than Lady but I can only go by what the camera shows. I don’t read the comments too often but I have in the past glanced at them and you are right in that people need to back up a bit and take a breath. I will say I had no opinion on Lady being bred back but I do miss seeing her pulling and logging with Bill but I think you know best what you need for your farm. I also miss seeing Ken hitched with Buck but we have to adjust and adapt with life’s circumstances. It is nice to see Ken in the pasture with Bree kicking up his heels. Watching as you train and work all your horses tells me that you know your stock far better than us so it’s silly to get ugly when someone has a differing opinion. Life is far too short for those kinds of stresses and I am just grateful you are willing to share bits of your world with is. Thank you for enlightening and entertaining us each and every visit…and don’t sweat all the negativity Jim BUT can I ask if William is still helping on the farm? I haven’t seen him lately and was just curious!!!:):):)

After watching a Friesian breeding farm for years, it's obvious having foals does no harm to a well nourished mare. Maybe signs of arthritis would suggest too old, but, that's not Lady.

Lady has had such easy labor and births that if you want to breed her and carry on her obviously good blood lines.

I am glad to see you're using horses, I understand the need to breed on a continued basis, I helped a neighbor farm as a child it was good exercise & we learned a lot.

I am surprised viewers suggested NOT to allow Lady to by bred. My choice is for her to have more foals. She is an excellent horse with superb genetics.

Farm is looking really good, good hay crop. I agree with you about breeding Lady again and also to a different stallion. Its obvious that she is very sound and her colts are doing so well. Duke and Earl are coming along perfectly and will make you good workers for the future. Thanks for the video, I enjoy the drone shots.
