Right! It’s not even just the Russian accent itself, but her voice that she used throughout the series was much deeper & harsher than her regular speaking voice. That’s a lot of strain to have on one’s voice.
When Voyager came on my wife had me a pizza each ep. She did that for at least the first season. I can recall sitting in the middle of the bed eating pizza and watching Voyager. She passed away Jan. Got my memories....not really enough .Miss her. 31 years little soulmate.
My first thought was "jeez that is a lot of pizza". But then I remembered back then we watched 1 episode a week. I discovered the series by binging it on Amazon and taking a few months to get through the whole series. It's hard to remember that 6 years were going by while I am binging. Sorry for your loss.
I'm sorry for your loss. How beautiful that you could share those stories and characters together. My partner and I also sit down to watch Star Trek together regularly. I hope you're doing well.
Those memories are priceless. Hold on to them. We’re all lucky to find even just one great love. Luckier still to love them into the end. My heart brakes for you. Remember her whenever you rewatch the show...
God, she’s got such grace and poise. Honestly, even now I can see that Captain Janeway swagger, that confidence, that wisdom. She’s been an inspiration to me for years
I think she's a great example of how a woman can be sexy not solely based on her looks. Don't get me wrong, Capt. Janeway is a beautiful woman, but she was also strong, smart, assertive and a great leader, which made her even sexier.
I've watched DS9, Enterprise and Voyager and some of the two originals and I must say her Captain was the closest to what I would imagine the Star Trek Universe would have. Janeway was intelligent, strong and dedicated character but also full of compassion and empathy and understanding. She displayed power when it was needed to and was your best friend in times of fun. Her relations with crew was spot on for me, especially with Kim. She didn't looked down on anyone and seemed equal to others while still being Captain and having respect. All this yet she never was Mary Sue, she relied on others and we saw her struggle multiple times. I think It's just the best portrayal of ideal Captain in the Star Trek Universe and very good portrayal of "strong independent woman" that even the men like :) oh and by the way I love the little smirk she made every now and then.
Kate, you are a class act! I grew up with Trekkie parents which ultimately led to my love and fascination with Star Trek and all things sci-fi and fantasy. Then when we sat down for the first time to watch OITNB, not knowing much about it before we did, and saw your radiant face gracing our screen again, we were overcome with joy!!! You have forever been a constant in our households, and I will be sure to show my future children your portrayals of strong, loving and independent women. Thank you!!!

Kate Mulgrew, what a classy and talented woman! And I agree with Beth w's post, "She'll always be Captain Kathryn Janeway to me." Nice job on the interview!
Voyager was my first Star Trek show I was watched on it's first run and boy, did she impress me. I never even thought about doubting a female captain. Captain Janeway had to make the toughest calls of all Captains and carry them out with will, dignity, passion and confidence and boy, she did!
Efstathios Dimopoulos literally it’s my opinion and if someone doesn’t like it they’re free to move on. But, let me rephrase for those with their delicate sensibilities that can’t handle someone having a different opinion. She is the BEST Starfleet captain in *my opinion*

(Orange is the New Black Spoilers!!) Having seen every episode of Voyager with her and then seeing Kate Mulgrew in the last season of Orange is the new Black was heartbreaking. Seeing this person, who I knew as the great Captain Janeway who lead her crew home, slowly loosing her memories in prison... Man. It hurt. Although it's just acting and although they are two different characters, I saw them as the same person.
I've never seen any of her movies/shows but this is the second interview of hers I've watched today. Im just entranced by the sheer elegance of this woman.

If I had to pick a Starfleet Captain to serve under, it would be Janeway. The Borg: “ resistance is futile” Janeway: “You have one of my crew members.”
Very martyred Mulgrew, you remind me so much of my mother. She is the most beautiful person I have ever seen and you look very very much like her. Also from your body language and embroidery. AND she does exactly the same annoying touch with her arms when I talk to her -.- ...... XD I loved Star Trek Voyager and mostly just watch OITNB because of you. Therefore, I would so much wish that you would be part of the new Picard series. Thank you for everything and best regards.
That was absolutely wonderful. Eleven minutes of the most heartfelt and meaningful talk. Especially for someone who learned " Danny Boy" from Maeve Ryan singing atop the bar on Ryan's Hope and loved the Delta Quadrant Adventures. You both were sensational, thank you.
You guys seemed so comfortable with each other. This was worth watching, no cringe, just genuine feelings and fun between 2 beautiful women seemed like!!!!!!
A truly exceptional actress, a complicated and immensely thoughtful woman, who has lived a wonderful rollercoaster life and career. Her life is such a spectrum of everything; pain and love, sucesses and failures, tragedy and redemption. What a remarkable woman. Id love to just sit and have tea with her, her strength reminds me a lot of my grandmothers character.
@@okidoke4822 All of the captains have their merits. I have watched all the series many times and like them all mostly, but some episodes and characters more than others. Many of my favorite episodes come from DS9, but there are many things I did not like about the show. It's all give and take and Janeway wins for me, with Picard next and then Kirk. :)
Irish catholic.. i never knew, but hearing the name now makes sense. What an amazing life story and I'm gonna read her books. Brings a whole new perspective to her. Amazing
I love you so much Kate Mulgrew! Captain Janeway made me watch Star Trek for the first time. Currently " Voyager" is on British TV and I'm still crazy about it, even though I have seen it God knows how many times. The best Captain in Star Trek for me.😍😍😍😍😍 Love " Voyager", love Janeway.💖💖💖
Growing up and seeing her as a Star Trek captian was more powerful than I have even realized until I saw her on OITNB. For Millennial women, she is part of the fabric of our confidence in never doubting that we are capable of what a man can accomplish. We have to work even harder as it is like going against the flow of a river while the men float along.
She is such an inspiring woman that brings out the best in you. She is so underrated and she should have been in many, many big movies because she is such a great actress but because she held onto her moral compass, they sidetracked her.

I am so glad she mentions Claire Labine. One of the great writers of daytime. To this day, Ryan's Hope is still perfection and is still my favourite daytime Soap. There was no opportunity to record the show back then. Are then any episodes still floating around?
I love Kate Mulgrews acting and shes done such wonderful thing for so many series... :) id be glad to pitch a star trek script that would utilize her in a pre-primetimeline of star trek where she basically saves the world from a augment war and would prevent the borg from taking over the forementioned world etc over the course of several seasons where she was not a starship captain but a time agent traveling from world to world in different periods of time, so then the world would atleast have one tv show about a time traveller that was fun to watch again
She truly is an extraordinary woman but to me she will always be Captain Janeway I love her so much she and made me a better woman because of Captain Janeway I would not be where I am today because of her I believe that she taught me that any woman can do anything she sets her heart so I thank you for that Kate love you
I've had a wicked crush on Kate Mulgrew since I first saw her as "Mrs. Columbo," and I think that I was 10 years old around 1977. As Kathryn Janeway, wow ... she was wonderful. Sexy, strong, determined, moral, and unflinching. That auburn, reddish hair, was fiery, yet she always reminded me of that "Girl Next Door," an "Ivory Girl" for those who can remember that commercial. Watching her as an older woman in "Orange Is the New Black" and especially her character "Red" becoming senile was likewise wonderful because it showed Ms. Mulgrew -- and all the female characters in that series truly -- as a "Woman," a real capital "W" Woman, as a real woman would look at that age and in that condition. Awesome character actress.
She was actually the second female captain in Star Trek, we had the captain of the enterprise c in one episode of TNG. Kate was the first lead character in the captains chair.
It was seeing Kate Mulgrew name on a show called orange is the new black, that got me curious about the show, and I became addicted not straight away I must admit, but I've binge watched this show, i'm half way through season 3 at the minute, but what saddens me a little is that if I hadn't seen Kate Mulgrews name I probably wouldn't have watched it, as it's not the kinda show i'd watch, and I would have been a lesser person for missing such an amazing show,All the actors and actresses are amazing and believable, the wroters are brilliant, the show has such character depth, not seen in other shows, the way it flashes back into characters lives before prison is superb, I don't have a favourite character on the show, as I feel this may diminish the other fine actresses and actors, alls I can say is they are ALL leaving an impression upon me. I'll remember this show for a very long time and thank you Kate Mulgrew for accepting a role in the show..when I think sometimes my job can be difficult, it doesn't compare to having to speak Russian on camera. Back to another episode I think.
I am so use to Her Russian Accent as Red in Orange is the New Black and it shocks me that she speaks perfect English.
She speaks perfect english in OITNB too.. just with an accent
She actually did the Russian accent before. Look up Batman the Animated Series villain Red Claw.
Right! It’s not even just the Russian accent itself, but her voice that she used throughout the series was much deeper & harsher than her regular speaking voice. That’s a lot of strain to have on one’s voice.

Amazing person and beautiful interview! Great interviewer.
Bruh, except for a little bit of fluff that ageing make up in End Game is absolutely spot on!
I love kate.Such a good actress.I guess this really ages me.She played a strong Irish woman in Ryan's Hope. I loved Mary Ryan.It broke my heart when she left that role. I am so glad she mentions Claire Labine. One of the great writers of daytime. To this day, Ryan's Hope is still perfection and is still my favourite daytime Soap. There was no opportunity to record the show back then. Are then any episodes still floating around?
Always loved Kate Mulgrew. Her reminiscing of times in Ireland. Glass of whisky and lamb in the oven. Has Lieutenant Barkley would say,
“ Perfection”
I love Kate Mulgrews acting and shes done such wonderful thing for so many series... :)
id be glad to pitch a star trek script that would utilize her in a pre-primetimeline of star trek where she basically saves the world from a augment war and would prevent the borg from taking over the forementioned world etc over the course of several seasons where she was not a starship captain but a time agent traveling from world to world in different periods of time, so then the world would atleast have one tv show about a time traveller that was fun to watch again
Voyager and tng are my favorites. Helped get me through a year of burn out and depression. I was so disappointed when netflix removed voyager.
She truly is an extraordinary woman but to me she will always be Captain Janeway I love her so much she and made me a better woman because of Captain Janeway I would not be where I am today because of her I believe that she taught me that any woman can do anything she sets her heart so I thank you for that Kate love you
I missed very much STAR TREK VOYAGER, especially humanity, sincerity and innocence of Kes (Jennifer Lien).
WHERE IS REMO WILLIAMS GODDAMNIT
She was actually the second female captain in Star Trek, we had the captain of the enterprise c in one episode of TNG. Kate was the first lead character in the captains chair.
My Captain Red! Proud to call myself an Orange Trekkie
she's a fantastic interviewer. and I love Janeway Kate. she taught me how to accept being borg. lol
I love this actor and the host is wonderful but the audio is so bad (quiet, then loud, then too quiet again) that I gave up
