  • Vanlife or #vanlife was an incredible experience and I would recommend it to anyone with even the slightest of interest in the lifestyle to give it a try it. I learned a lot about myself and also had a great time doing it. However, it is not a picture perfect magical lifestyle 24/7 that it is made out to be here on the internet.

I have owned several vans over the years, but thankfully never had to live in any of them. I also owned tents and camped for 50 years or so. The van was nice when the tent got too cold. I finally gave up winter camping.
I have been watching tons of videos, and van life was looking really good to me. Your video about quitting van life and this video have interjected some reality into my daydreams. Thank you for the reality check. Good luck with your new life in AZ in a sticks n bricks house.

2:30 Storage unit makes sense because even if you have "your own place" burglary rates are going up and just because you have a safe place to sleep, doesn't mean you're stuff is safe while you're away from home - or even when you are. What works for a guy living off grid on a desert dirt road with guns at the ready and apparently no job to go to might not work for too many other people.

People have been living and surviving in there vehicles since the days of Rome. Nomads have been around for almost as long as humans have been on the planet. You are right. It's not new. The settlers of the west in this country stayed in their covered wagons while traveling across the country heading west. When it comes to comments, please remember that probably a good 80% of your viewers are people who have never done anything worth while in their lives. Most of them sit at home watching others enjoy life on You Tube. So take comments with a grain of salt. Finally, I lived in a couple of vans and a few pickups with camper shells. Always because I was destitute. So I was forced into it. I bet I spent a good 5 years of my life on the road. And there was no you tube then. No solar cells. No fantastic fans and no 12 volt coolers to keep my food in. There were no cell phones and no GPS. And I've always had dogs and even a few girl friends while doing it. So I know of what I speak. This life can be fun when you do it by choice. Nasty though if you are forced into it back when I was doing it.

The manipulation of the real estate industry(75%)& worldly negative economy is forcing me to choose this life style.
Also, I've outgrown the city life since I was a fetus, so im long over due.The time is now. This way of living could have
benefited me a long time ago, vs just vacationing.

I hv worked and lived internationally
in the 3 most dangerous countries. I've lived where I couldn't drink the water. Constant brown outs. Went to camp as kid. Road tripped with my parents. It is different than coming home to a doorman building. It's easier to navigate situations when you know the pros and cons. Everyone doesn’t age the same.

Love my RV but after a week I'm missing my home shower so damn much. You only get 100 gallons of water and that is for dishes, toilet, washing hands, and showers. We can usually last 7 days with 3 people on one full tank of water. Living in an RV (or van) full time isn't for me but major respect to everyone that does it. Also, Arizona is absolutely beautiful year round from desert to pine-covered mountains. So many amazing places to visit. So many unique wildlife to see. Glad to hear you found a nice place off the grid. I'm hoping to do the same post-retirement.

I appreciate this video (and the other one you were referring to) very much! I have been contemplating living in a camper and traveling the world - it is why I am working on setting up an online business.
All the things you mentioned I already knew, but your description of it made it really sink in on a very deep level. You have helped me to decide to keep my apartment at least for some time if I were to buy/built a camper. Also I decided that living in a camper would only work for me as long as I travel. I currently live in a small, over-regulated EU country where you are not allowed to live/sleep in your vehicle outside designated (expensive) camping sites. So ... no fun!

I believe those who make van life glamorous really love their van life. I'm sure people know it's not going to be perfect everyday because life is not perfect. We make our lives what it is weather in a van, a mansion or a tiny apt in the middle of Manhattan. It's also a money issue. I'm a 68 year old senior who is now divorced after 30 years of marriage. I'm not wealthy so van life is looking very promising to me at this time. You either love it or hate it but don't discourage people who never experienced it. One more thing. I think that Americans are spoiled. Taking a shower everyday is not necessary. This is all just my opinion.

Thanks for another great video. Over the past several months, I have seen a lot of van life videos. I am going to be retiring in a few years and was attracted to van life as it looked like a inexpensive way for my wife and I to travel. After watching "why I quit van life", it helped me to look at some of the common sense issues you raised in a humorous light. I think it might be fun to do for weekends or short trips, but with the price of used vans, we could probably just get a nice small travel trailer and achieve the same goal of visiting places. I agree that it's a huge fad at present (probably because many have felt as though we're on house arrest due to Covid). I am old enough to remember when custom vans were the rage back in the 70s (until suddenly they weren't). Anyway, thanks for your perspective and wisdom. Congrats as well on your sobriety. I have been sober now for over a decade and am very blessed for having a second chance.

Hi Cap'n, friend of Brian's - Got out of the Navy in 65' bought a 64 VW two tone green bus with a 36hp engine, tricked it out as a sleeper, put my R250 BMW bike in the back and did all of New England, Canadian Maritines, but mostly New Yorks Adarandack's . Back before anybody bothered you and were most welcoming. Now my daughter inherited my Gypsy genes and is out in Joshua Tree on a West Coast Tour. Here in the East she has a 2018 Ram Pro-Master City that Dad tricked out and a 2014 Trillium that she works out of anywhere from New York to Florida. Is the van still for sale?

I've researched a little about "van life". Not as a source of freedom and adventure, but more as a last ditch effort to keep my ass from living on the street if it ever came to that. Yeah you see all those beautiful destinations and this and that. But in the real world, I think it could and probably would be a giant pain. Limited everything, water, heat, cool, showers, food, privacy, and the list could go on and on.. If you had plenty of money to throw around for everything you need, gas, tires, repairs, ect. then maybe it would be alright. But if you had to travel, find a job for a week or two to fund the next leg of your adventure, then repeat. Wow... If I had a job where I made lots of money and could work remotely, I'm still not sure it would be worth it. As a matter of fact, I think even then it would start getting old pretty quick. Maybe not for everyone, but for me at least.....

Great video with honest info!!! Other considerations for full time vanlifers: How will you get mail & packages? How will you establish a physical address/residency? (Some bills / business / employment / voting / van registration & van licensing type stuff just pretty much necessitates a physical address.) How will you stay connected? (Mobile internet, etc. - sometimes your phone just isn't enough.) How will you get your 'rig' insured and how will you get health insurance? (This can be a big headache for self-employed or seasonally employed vanlifers.) How will you support yourself financially? (Vanlife can be cheap, but it ain't free!) And lastly, always ALWAYS have an emergency backup fund. (Sh!t will always happen...always.) There's resources on RUclips to answer all these questions. Just make sure you have answers before you hit the open road. There's SO much behind the scenes with #vanlife! But still do it! Happy travels! :)

Any life in the in the state of Arizona is fantastic outside the city of course, it's so beautiful. Just make sure your armed. Buy a rural property, being a crack auto mechanic doesn't hurt, all you young people need to realize buying property is easy and cheap, ask owners if they will carry paper or the note. Do not listen to naysayers, you can achieve property ownership, never use a realtor, they mostly are clueless unless in a small rural town but even then they can be ignorant. I wish I was younger but the deals are out there for the motivated.

  • @vincenzopromedia
    @vincenzopromedia 2 года назад +2

    [2/2]
    9. Wow you're like one of the only van life people on here actually telling people to become mechanically inclined. Dude, thank you for that. We need that so much. Van life's audience is ironically not mechanically inclined, and it's extremely sad. Part of that falls back on your definition of it, because if van life is alternative living, and not owning a van, then the van is nothing but a box on wheels not even worthy of the same kind of care that goes into a 69 Camaro or for references that you'll understand your wrangler build. Sure it's not going to get you over 70" boulders or drift around corners (..well even that just depend on how you build it) but it still needs a little dam pancake geese on the bearings, and maybe some coil overs to get your isotherm fridge and ship lap interior from Huston to Miami in one peace. And even then, it's still got to be regularly maintained. Especially for older vans, which are deemed unreliable breakdowns when it's the owners maintenance not the age of the vehicle that determine it's reliability. Older vans are cheaper and still a viable option but that gets downplayed. Buying an older van means it's closer to their service date, and just because the part that needs to be changed costs more than a tune up, such as engine rebuilds or body work, does not mean that it's time for a newer car. Because spending that much more money is not justified. The build to me starts with the van itself. The body, engine, drivetrain, breaks, and suspension should all not just be maintained, but also modded for best performance on the platform. Not just the interior parts and adding solar. True van life is appreciating a van. A good build should make the vehicle worth more than before it was built. Not just get you by because it's not a brand new sprinter.
    10. Living in a tiny studio like a van is about staying on top of things. In a tiny space, you will need to leave it often to make living in it doable. Tiny home / mobile home life is best for the most hyper organized, hyper schedule focused people in the world. This is why it's target should be the college student, because they are pushing themselves to be just that. A good van, good build, and scheduling regular fill ups, or regular maintenance into your week should keep things from ever even seeming like your running out of water. You mentioned 18 gallons being heavy? Well, I don't know where you're going, or how capable your rig is, but that would be the equivalent to carrying one single other person with you everywhere you go. It's a van. It's meant to carry cargo long distance. The convenience of that however greatly depends on your build, and your water system. Any van can have a practical easy to use inside shower. Not just a tall expensive sprinter. Those are just easier to put a conventional shower into. Van life is different because it's driven by the individuals creativity for problems and problem solving. To a good van, with a good build, the river is always an option.
    11. I agree with the bucket even in a sprinter because it's all the same. Having a composting system is more popular but again sadly we are developing a lot of problems from trends in van life that don't inspire people in the right ways. Composting prolongs the inevitable rather than dealing with it head on. You're not connected to a pipe that removes your waste instantly. You are hording it, and keeping it with you until you reach suitable lands to dispose of it. I'd much rather poop in a bucket, a folding camp toilet to be specific, and throw it away like pampers, and dog doo. These things have to be maintained often when living in a small space. A good van, and good build help a lot, but regularity is the key. It should never get to a boiling point. Think about the highest quality of life you can live in there. Van life can be more convenient than house life, and I believe that it should be or I wouldn't do it, and that's all up to you.
    12. I believe van life can be practical but you have to do the ground work. I believe you shouldn't worry about meeting people, and traveling, if these hiccups are not rectified, or else they'll pile up, and make you make a why I quit van life video. By the end of the day, you have a van, and as long as you keep that van you're living the van life. Having the van is supposed show the world that this life is great, possible, practical, productive, safe, and more convenient than if you did not have the van. Because how can you live van life without a van? And who would care if you had a van, if it wasn't all those great things?

    Lets do an interview

  • @vincenzopromedia
    @vincenzopromedia 2 года назад +1

let's start over from the top. [1/2]
    1. It's funny so many people live in their vans, and still don't know what van-life means. Correction: "van-life" is just owning a van. Don't have to drive it, travel, meet new people, live in it, build it out, or put insurance on it. It's just owning a van. That's it. You have to look at it broader. Van life is not having an SUV, pickup truck, minivan or RV. It's having, appreciating, and representing a van. That's my definition anyways. It doesn't insult anyone to say you live van life if you are not full time in it. If they want to be edgy lunatics' depreciating their vans saying their valid van lifers because they're living in their vans, then let them. It makes no sense to say people that drive their vans and appreciate them by dropping thousands of dollars into their vans can't be apart of van life because they're not living in them full time. That's stupid, and undermines the very vanners you speak of.
    2. Just cause you experienced something, and it's all you know, doesn't mean you know what you experience, why you experienced it, neither would it necessarily make you knowledgeable enough to tell anyone anything about it. That my friend is flawed logic. I get it. It makes sense on the surface, but looking deeper, it doesn't. If you feel hypothetically stumped then you should probably reconsider all of your typical thought processes because a lot of people make this mistake and it's not fun, but it's real.
    3. I agree van life is nothing new, it's a trend, and the hype doesn't inspire people in the best way all the time. It's romanticized, and for the unrealistic mind, they can easily get the wrong idea, jump to conclusions, and not be realistic about it (which is where I think you fall). But I don't think it's because of peoples yearning for serenity in their lives -which is not a half bad guess. I think it's because we're finding ways to make it make us money. It's not just romanticized, but marketed, and industrialized. Personally I find a real utility in van life especially if it's defined as what I said it should be. I'm not willing to give up on it for fear that it's too unrealistic. Personally my own ambitions for van life are to bring back the vans of the 70's & 80's to this era with all the sweet technology. I'm not giving up on it any time soon.
    4. You don't have to give up your things, that's your choice, we will revisit that later. This is why I think van life's target audience is college graduates e.g. people that don't have a lot of their own things yet. This goes back to vans being a utility, the same as they were in the 80s. Not just for camping in. In the 80s, people were full timing in their vans, but they were accepted as more of like the average family cars, pickup truck, or SUVs are today. It's just that since the 80s, or since popular vanning times, there seems to be no reason they went extinct other than gas prices. Since the average family or hippie would downsize to a pickup truck, SUV, minivan, or crossover, full size van today, vans have found other markets less sensitive to gas prices such as commercial use, to coexist with us in until now. Now we're finding another way to make vans help us do what we want to do. Van life, van builds, & social media. Getting money and living free. It's the commercial that writes itself.
    5. Van life is only willful. It's not by accident or by misfortune. Only if you choose to can it be van life.
    6. Saving money and hitting the road are two different contradicting things. Life on the road is expensive, and you don't have to hit the toad to live van life. You might be saving in the moment by living in the van compared to rent, but you will loose just as much as paying rent living on the road, because you're not getting anything but a nice Instagram feed for the money you spend on the road. Unless you're reinvesting your savings into social media businesses, partnerships, land, or other entrepreneurial exploits, you're not beating inflation, or building any wealth, just the same as paying rent. But that's not van life. IDK WTH that junk is. So ideally believe it or not the best course of action in van life, or as I'd argue "just life", is to mortgage a house or buy some land, while living in your van. OR buy a house, and a van. Piggy backing off of (5.), if you had a van, and a house, and lost the house, you would have something to fall back on. Which is another reason for having a van over other types of cars.
    7. At this point I do not recommend anyone get solar on their vans at least not initially because it's expensive, and doesn't produce a lot of energy to charge batteries. It's nice, but not essential. I would say use that money to go bigger on other parts of the build like a 2nd alternator, or more higher grade batteries. I'd say if your electrical setup is panned out right, you won't need solar at all, and you wont need sure power for anything other than charging the batteries. Charging off the engine or from a high voltage wall plug just like an EV should be enough. There's a lot about van building that I think is wrong philosophically, and becoming more trendy, standardized, and expected.
    8. I think van life is showing us that we need to redefine what we mean by luxuries. I don't think a fridge is a luxury. I think it's been missing in action so long that it's thought of as an unbelievable thing to have in a car, but it's so essential to modern life that I don't think it's unnecessary. A lot of this falls back on the build. If the electrical were panned out right the demands of a fridge would not be a problem. And if it's easy for ice to get messy, then the convenience of a fridge could be better for your health. To me, the lack of a fridge is borderline disfunction. You can live without it, but thinking about how much you can live without will lead you down a dark path. Disfunction shouldn't be confused with being minimal or efficient. You should only be thinking about the highest quality of life you can fit into your van. Pushing the boundaries van life should be asking yourself what does your money and current technology allow you to have. That's why your build matters so much.

I'm thinking that van life is for people who have "stay at home jobs", or work using a laptop? There's no way I could just quit my job and run off to live in my van. As fun as that sounds, I would run out of money very fast! I seen lots of videos of people living out of their vans and small campers, but none have ever talked about how they make money.

It's not sustainable. The older we get the more we will always be back to a traditional home or a much larger much more expensive rig. It's definitely for the young and childless. Noone wants to have their kids grow up in a van. Or elderly still shitting in a bucket.

Mostly to educate and also talk about some truths about a topic that is more often than not glorified to be only perfect and magical 100% of the time. I enjoy making videos that are real and raw with honest perspectives about life. Have a look around my channel and consider getting to know me better. I appreciate you taking the time to comment, have an awesome one.

Ok, seriously using lakes to bathe in is gross for the lake. All the bullshit in hair care products & soap is nasty. Stop polluting lakes.
