For the 1984 games, L.A. did something very smart and that was asking businesses to start earlier at 6am so as to get more cars off the freeways as possible. At the time, it was one of the smartest things they did, and the second thing they did was to basically tell everyone who lives in L.A. if you don't have to drive, DON'T during the games. That helped big time and the freeways were very little for the full two weeks of the games. That's what they need to do again. Now we have a number of people that can work from home that couldn't do it back in 1984 because the technology wasn't available back then.

LAX was an absolute mess prior to the '84 games but the freeways were fantastic during the games. It's true that everyone really did their part in either not driving or taking the metro buses during the events.
The homeless, pavement dwellers were relocated "further east" but the numbers weren't as massive as they are now with much greater drug use and mental health problems beyond comprehension.

Unfortunately at 10:42 this video has made a mistake. Visitors landing at LAX will NOT be able to directly "board a subway" from LAX. In reality they will need to take the APM to the Metro K Light Rail station then Transfer to the E line light rail. To get to the E line from the K line they will need to exit the K line station (below ground), walk across Crenshaw Blvd. and wait at the at grade E line station for the next E light rail train. This will take them to the 7th St. Metro Center Station where you then can transfer to the B and D heavy rail subway lines.
I hope LA 2028 committee will have ambassadors assisting travelers at the K and E lines to help guide them thru this transfer process.

    Excellent explanation!
I live on the westside, regularly use metro and busses (Santa Monica has a great bus network), and have been looking forward to the Games and the transit improvements in process.
I remember the double decking of LAX before the 1982 games. Hard to believe that so much has been done in 40 years.
I've lived in Tokyo, NYC, DC and Chicago, each with a distinct public transportation history. Linkage to the airport was late in coming to both Chicago and DC, and to LAX. Is that just the way it goes?
I think the biggest challenge in L.A. was a failure of imagination.
I am sorry that the old Pacific red line right of way wasn't preserved. Hindsight is 20/20!

LA had a few areas of this population like every other city, mainly around Venice Beach, Santa Monica, and a much smaller Skid Row. But LA metro is huge--if you were a tourist before 2010, you could see a lot of parts of LA metro--Pasadena, Burbank, West Hollywood, Manhattan Beach, Anaheim, Beverly Hills, etc.--and never see a homeless person. It's somewhat still true today. Unlike San Francisco that's had that issue widespread since the 80s at least.

Did you notice the big, glaring omission from your list? So-fi Stadium (and the Kia Forum, for that matter) are not on the list, and that's where the main events for the World Cup, the Super Bowl, and the Olympics will all be held. Unfortunately *that* people mover isn't scheduled to be complete until 2030; it kept getting put on hold because businesses in the area didn't like how they'd need to close while the guideway was under construction and keep lobbying to pull funding from the project.

Los Angeles does need a LOT of work. As we know, like in most places that host big events, it will just be temporary "fix". Metro system (Bus & Trains) are not always clean and definitely not safe with all the homeless and "law abiding" citizens that hop on.
The traffic is horrible already around all the stadiums and arenas LA will most likely use for the Olympics. Now imagine with an influx of people.
Cleaning the streets will be tough as well because everywhere you go the streets for the most part are busy and theres people living in the streets all over the place.

The biggest problem the US has is that it doesnt really have mixed use zones and medium density housing, which would create more urban centers and make public transport actually viable. Now u either have a sometimes deserted high rise cbd surrounded by low density single family homes.

    • @davidlang1125
      @davidlang1125 3 месяца назад

The single family zones are the bane of modern city life. The easiest path to solving most of the problems associated with the “garden beautiful” movement from the late 19th century is to overhaul our present zoning codes. Transit should be expanded to include minibuses that serve local mixed use areas of medium density housing and act as feeder routes for rail and tram networks. Private cars will decline when better public transit is in place. Small businesses should be permitted in all zones especially within presently zoned for single families.
This is a unique opportunity to really make constructive changes to our unlivable car-choked cities.

It's worth noting that the Metro expansion and LAX upgrades both were approved and began construction before LA was even awarded the games. Their budgets are completely independent of the games. That's to say, they're not being specifically built for the Olympics. These were going to happen whether or not LA was hosting.
In a post 9/11 world, it's safe to assume that security costs will easily wipe away any possibility of LA breaking even much less making a profit.

The more long term the infrastructure becomes, the better. The airport improvements sounds great for this. The 27,000 more buses and dedicated lanes... Sounds like a nightmare.
This can technically be an opportunity to build out rail that can be a "viable" long term alternative to cars if it can be designed to go - significantly - faster (including the time it gets to and from station by walking). What I see happening instead is a lowest cost temporary solution, where everything is moved back into the current travel hellscape afterwards. Ironically, this just throws away money. The better the investment for long term infrastructure use and improvement, the more money the city will recoup as well as profit. Someone should run the numbers on how much money is lost in LA from the horrible commute. And "carefully" run the numbers... Which means include things like "lost opportunities" which aren't currently on the ground today.
