Fun fact: I stopped watching all Vlogbrother related material 3 years ago. I'm back now watching CrashCourse and SciShow to increase my knowledge of science to help me out when university starts in September.
In high school, I was very excited to take a Chemistry class. However, a few months in, it became my least favorite class. A bunch of the more rowdy students hijacked the class and often distracted the teacher - I learnt nothing, and it showed on tests. I eventually came to dislike Chemistry, treating it as a dirty word. But now, only one video in, a decent teacher has reminded me exactly why I was so excited in the first place. Thank you, Hank!
Did your school not have prerequisites for chemistry? At my high school, a student could not enroll in chemistry until they had completed algebra 1 and geometry, and could not enroll in physics until they had completed algebra 2/trigonometry. This had the effect of weeding the disruptive students out, as they were still languishing in pre-algebra or remedial arithmetic.
+dennis robinson A lot of teachers forget how important it is to educate, and just spute knowledge after a while.. I guess this guy has the ability to maintain the right intentions.
Education now is about money and a letter grade. Teachers want you to memorize so they can fulfill their given requirements. This is to help you learn and understand the topic.

Back in my sophomore year, my teacher never taught us any of these. Instead, of actual chemistry lecture, he gave us articles and forced us to highlight, annotate, and write an essay about it ( more work than my actual English class). Now I have to take a Chemistry placement exam in one week, and I glad that I found you guys or else I will fail and have to pay for more classes in college.

Because government backed one-size-fits-all education is based on necessitating dry, boring wrote memorization in a system that ironically doesn't teach/drill methods of mnemonic retention. In other words public education doesn't do "edutainment" very well.
@@neo4544 Distance learning is a thing; I don't think he meant it sarcastically. Rather, I think he means when the teacher can avoid topic shifts from group discussions (which is essential when you are teaching people in person) they can teach more, much more effectively, in a much shorter time. All the visual aides of video just make it that much better

CC, have you ever thought of doing a series with Hank on Science History? A series where each video explores the life and accomplishments of notable scientists such as Einstein, Newton, Goddard, Tesla, Copernicus etc. would be awesome to see from you guys. Crash course makers....can u please make a physics crash course? I will be taking AP physics for my junior year in high school this september. Right now im having a difficult time understanding the summer hw.
I am currently working on making notebooks of notes from all of the different Crash Course series in order to gain a better overall understanding of each subject. I am starting with chemistry. Wish me luck!
Haha I do the same but I also try to use other sources (like Khan Academy) for my notes because one source is usually not enough, but it really gets quite exhausting sometimes.
I’m 12 and honestly I think chemistry is REALLY interesting. I know about nitric acid, potassium nitrate, capsaicin, and some more but I don’t know the basics of chemistry so that’s why I’m here 🤷🏻♀️

I'm a 9th grader , in my country ,when we Ascend to 10th grade we start studying each branch of science partially , well , I just can't wait especially that chemistry has been on my mind for so long since I was a a kid and finally decided to start studying it and tbh your way of teaching is incredibly great and simple ! The opening never failed to make me cry. The subject Chemistry is so underrated. And most people aren't interested in it and giving Chemistry a bad reputation because of 'Chemicals' . I love Chemistry :')))
Coming back to watch this series again because this was the only reason I passed Chem and now I'm actually going to school for biochemistry!! This series made me love science again

I'm running through this course now for pure recreation; stopping, repeating lessons, and taking notes along the way. I really have to say that these are nothing short of amazing! Hank acts as a brilliant broker of knowledge between the worlds of academia and the layman. For me personally this has been as exciting and as accessible as my experiences with Brian Greene, Charles Van Doren, and Carl Sagan. The enthusiasm and humor keeps me fully engaged at a constant clip, not to mention the sharing of this information broken down into something highly digestible for the masses is downright inspiring.
I always avoid looking at science stuff at the break time but , with this channel I spent all my break time at science episodes . which is a very good thing by the way . keep it up the guys you are the only one in the world who made science and knowledge funny and interesting
I'm 13 but I've been watching and reading things on chemistry and physics for about a year or two. So when I do start chemistry it will most Likely be easy.
I finished high school few years ago and I gave up studies because there were several bunch of topics I literally couldn't understand. Went for some after school tutorials and didn't help. I felt I had properly gotten really dumb. Now studying has been on my mind and didn't know what to do and I came on RUclips to check videos out. Thank you for this amazing channel and I'm learning a lot. But please is there like a community where I can post questions and get answers.
I just learned more about chemistry in this video than I did in my first semester of chemistry in highschool. Part of that truth lies with my will to actually want to learn more, and part of it has to do with how well this was edited and produced. I'm subscribing for more education and knowledge! NOTE: The occasional restating and review of bits throughout the video and in the end made a huge difference in my ability to retain and understand the material. Thanks for that!
I took Honors Chem as a freshman and just to give you some advice don't go beyond episode 30 in this series because then it gets more into AP chemistry stuff, unless you're planning on taking that later on. Stoichiometry is a big part of it so try focusing on that because a lot of the conversions you will be doing will rely on that. Good Luck!
What I remember of chemistry is my teacher making me memorize the periodic chart, and she never explained to me what the hell was the meaning of these numbers and symbols.
I wish that everyone who criticizes teachers becomes one. If you can see what they are doing so obviously wrong, go do it right. That's what I did, and I teach chemistry the way I wish I had been taught. Zero complaints, lots of love from my students.
Have been out of class for a long long time. Watching this as a refresher... six minutes in and I'm extremely amused! Could see myself binge watching all these videos for days. I love how the humorous references really help the concepts stick.... LOVE IT.

I'm smart enough not to let myself end up like you guys. Not rushing through college wasn't your mistake. Marrying somebody you don't love, blowing your credit card, etc. were your mistakes. Not everybody has to rush through college to be successful.
I understand their points, but I get yours too. Personally I'll probably be forced to take a brake since there's deadlines for college applications and I'm having problems getting my transcript, but I don't plan on it.
Well, physics is great for undestanding nature and the Universe, but chemestry will help you understand the World around you better, every single thing arround you has atoms and molecles and propieties and you can only undestand them with chemestry. Physics is more general, and it's better if you want to find a "Theory of Everything". But chemestry is the tool for studying more deeply specific things down to the individual molecules
I feel like I must take a test after Everytime I watch a crash course video in order to make sure that I understood and remember what I'm being taught.
BioChem sucks just take regular Biology and then Chemistry, assuming you can. (I took Physics in 8th grade and thought BioChem was something different.)
Cynical Trash even if it might have sucked for you, biochem is necessary for many careers especially pharmacy so I think a lot of us would find biochem videos helpful

I started training as a physics lab technician and have to take chemistry as well so I'm back watching the chemistry crash course again. I tried to watch through the chemistry course last year but had trouble understanding everything (last chemistry lessons in school were like 8 years ago and English isn't my native language). I'm gonna try get through the whole course this time!!
Every time I hear people say "pronounce it like nucleus, not nucleus." or "nuclear, not nuclear." I'm like "you just said the same word twice, they those pronunciations sound exactly the same to me."
I think that Crash course should teach physics, i mean they have done Biology and Chemistry so why should they neglect physics. In my opinion Biology and Chemistry are the best but Physics is so much more abstract and not a lot of people understand it, plus it requires so much math and if some of us here want math instead of physics we could learn both subjects along the way
+Fds Chan Yeah, well the mathematics part is what makes it so much more interesting than any other fields if you ask me. I excel in mathematics, so it seems like something that would be easiest for me to really get into.
I learned more about chemistry in this first video then I did in my high school chemistry class last year. (It looks like a lot of people in the comments agree with me) Thank you for doing this, it inspires me, and makes me want to be a better student.
I'm starting college for a chem major in the fall! I'm so excited I figured I'd review here. It's with an environmental concentration because I want to help reduce pollution and heal the Earth. Thanks for this series!
+Goner Mainly I'd like to get in a field that works to create solutions to pollution thag already exists. Be it concentrations of heavy metal around dumps or other toxins in the soil that in dangers or inhibits growth. I'd also like to be able to learn more about how various known pollutants interact with the environment and how we can reduce or mitigate the effects. When we're talking about pollutants I believe that you need to have a fundamental understanding of how they're build and what they do to the surrounding environment in order to be able to really effective clean up or improve the problem. Naturally I'm not an expert so if this field doesn't provide what I'm looking for I'll try something else, but right now that's my end goal so chemistry seems like a good starting point.
I always knew this guy as a history teacher, but the crash course format works so well for all kinds of stuff apparently! The way he makes sure everything is well understood through definitions and clear language really helps.

BlueCosmology Yes. He WAS retired, but he got bored with it so he is teaching now. Its a small school of a little less than 200 and he only has 1-2 classes.

Teach for a million years and then keep teaching. That excitement for your subject is so crucial and yet so rare in educators.

Kris check out Bozeman Science. Paul Anderson has AP physics lectures that are not quite as crazy but easy to understand.
Mathematics would be cool to for calculus and such.

After seeing many videos the thought that i am getting is to just dropout school and just study from Crashcourse. Hats off to Hanks great work.

I finished high school few years ago and I gave up studies because there were several bunch of topics I literally couldn't understand. Went for some after school tutorials and didn't help. I felt I had properly gotten really dumb. Now studying has been on my mind and didn't know what to do and I came on RUclips to check videos out.
Thank you for this amazing channel and I'm learning a lot. But please is there like a community where I can post questions and get answers.
I love this course. It's been a favorites playlist for a while for me. I constantly come back to re-watch this course.
I just learned more about chemistry in this video than I did in my first semester of chemistry in highschool. Part of that truth lies with my will to actually want to learn more, and part of it has to do with how well this was edited and produced. I'm subscribing for more education and knowledge!

I took Honors Chem as a freshman and just to give you some advice don't go beyond episode 30 in this series because then it gets more into AP chemistry stuff, unless you're planning on taking that later on. Stoichiometry is a big part of it so try focusing on that because a lot of the conversions you will be doing will rely on that. Good Luck!

What I remember of chemistry is my teacher making me memorize the periodic chart, and she never explained to me what the hell was the meaning of these numbers and symbols.
I remember lithium (I think that's "Litio" in english) I think it's the first one too lol. I ended up studying physics and maths.
I wish that everyone who criticizes teachers becomes one. If you can see what they are doing so obviously wrong, go do it right. That's what I did, and I teach chemistry the way I wish I had been taught. Zero complaints, lots of love from my students.
Have been out of class for a long long time. Watching this as a refresher... six minutes in and I'm extremely amused! Could see myself binge watching all these videos for days. I love how the humorous references really help the concepts stick.... LOVE IT.

I'm smart enough not to let myself end up like you guys. Not rushing through college wasn't your mistake. Marrying somebody you don't love, blowing your credit card, etc. were your mistakes. Not everybody has to rush through college to be successful.
I understand their points, but I get yours too. Personally I'll probably be forced to take a brake since there's deadlines for college applications and I'm having problems getting my transcript, but I don't plan on it.

Well, physics is great for undestanding nature and the Universe, but chemestry will help you understand the World around you better, every single thing arround you has atoms and molecles and propieties and you can only undestand them with chemestry. Physics is more general, and it's better if you want to find a "Theory of Everything". But chemestry is the tool for studying more deeply specific things down to the individual molecules
Im a freshmen in high school and next year im taking honors chemistry so im going to learn all i can to just breeze through that class next year.
I feel like I must take a test after Everytime I watch a crash course video in order to make sure that I understood and remember what I'm being taught.

BioChem sucks just take regular Biology and then Chemistry, assuming you can.

Cynical Trash even if it might have sucked for you, biochem is necessary for many careers especially pharmacy so I think a lot of us would find biochem videos helpful

I started training as a physics lab technician and have to take chemistry as well so I'm back watching the chemistry crash course again. I tried to watch through the chemistry course last year but had trouble understanding everything (last chemistry lessons in school were like 8 years ago and English isn't my native language). I'm gonna try get through the whole course this time!!
Every time I hear people say "pronounce it like nucleus, not nucleus." or "nuclear, not nuclear."
I'm like "you just said the same word twice, they those pronunciations sound exactly the same to me."
I think that Crash course should teach physics, i mean they have done Biology and Chemistry so why should they neglect physics. In my opinion Biology and Chemistry are the best but Physics is so much more abstract and not a lot of people understand it, plus it requires so much math and if some of us here want math instead of physics we could learn both subjects along the way

How do you plan on doing that
+Goner Mainly I'd like to get in a field that works to create solutions to pollution thag already exists. Be it concentrations of heavy metal around dumps or other toxins in the soil that in dangers or inhibits growth. I'd also like to be able to learn more about how various known pollutants interact with the environment and how we can reduce or mitigate the effects. When we're talking about pollutants I believe that you need to have a fundamental understanding of how they're build and what they do to the surrounding environment in order to be able to really effective clean up or improve the problem. Naturally I'm not an expert so if this field doesn't provide what I'm looking for I'll try something else, but right now that's my end goal so chemistry seems like a good starting point.

I always knew this guy as a history teacher, but the crash course format works so well for all kinds of stuff apparently! The way he makes sure everything is well understood through definitions and clear language really helps.

BlueCosmology Yes. He WAS retired, but he got bored with it so he is teaching now. Its a small school of a little less than 200 and he only has 1-2 classes.
