I've seen so many crafters, when doing a pamphlet stitch, faffing with measurements. The fact you just stab in the middle and a bit in from top/bottom, just reassures me (as a newer crafter) that precision isn't always the most important thing. Loving your videos Ceri, keep em coming, I'll catch up when my arm is properly mended.
There’s something incredibly genuine and warm about you. I was actually looking up how to set up a “travelers journal” so happy this showed up in recommendations. Cant wait to start 2024 off with doing something like this on my own.
I LOVE THAT YOUR BLACK LEATHER FOLDER IS MADE FROM A COUCH YOU CUT UP!!!!! I am so lucky to have you as a RUclips art prof. Seriously… among other things you have taught me is to take advantage of a square ruler. Thank you so much for sharing 💕💕💕💕💕
All your tutorials are such a treat Ceri. I find your instructions make everything look so easily doable. I find myself revisiting them again. Much appreciated 🙏 ☺
This is an awesome tutorial. You are an excellent teacher, this was very easy to follow and understand. I will be referring back to this when I'm ready to make a notebook. Thank you so much for sharing. ❤️
This is the best description I have ever seen on how to create these TN type inserts. You have a great voice and are a real joy to listen to. Thanks for all the tips.
Just stumbled upon this video -- thank you!! I think you are one of the best teachers I've seen here on RUclips. Just fabulous. I'm so excited to get going with my DIY Trav notebooks for 2024!!! So appreciate all the time and thought and effort you invested here and look forward to watching more of your videos. Thank you!!!!!

I really need to make one for my husband. He is quite the list maker! His birthday is coming up on the 2nd of June!!! YIKES!!! Thank you so much luv! ♥️🙏🥀
What a lovely tutorial! I'll definitely be trying that stitching method. I usually use staples to avoid having to punch several holes into the booklets, but with just 3 it looks very simple!
I watched this video and started and stopped it as I made my own I am in love with these. I love your tutorials, easy to listen to and very explicit details. Thank you

Thank you so much for a comprehensive explanation! I live in the southwest corner of mainland British Columbia, Canada. With this video of yours, and the video Gayle did about the simple notebook for her hubby, I think I can actually make one of these.
Ceri, this tutorial is golden. Your instructions and tips are very much appreciated. I sing in a large chorus and have rehearsal and performance dates to track. While cell phones are helpful, there are notations, special sectional info, etc. I, too, need to write it all down or will be forgotten. My singer’s notebook has pockets, so once I make mine, that is where it will live. Thank you! 🌻🌻🌻

As a Journal maker, I'm always interested to see how other Journal makers make their journals and I recently found your channel and subscribed, so I'm working my way through your videos. Love you simple easy to watch videos, plus you really explain how and why your doing each step in the process. I'm looking forward to picking up and using a great many of your tips and tricks.
Thank you Jacqui and welcome to my channel, if you have any questions just let me know, if I don’t know the answer I possibly will know someone who will.
Hi Ceri, Just wanted to thank you for giving me the courage to try, for the first time, sewing in a signature. I don't know why but I have always been nervous of trying this technique but your video on making travelers notebooks inspired me and wow when I followed your instructions it worked like a dream.
Love them!!!..Can decorate to suite yourself / as to what you will use them for!!! Small enough to not get so overwhelmed, as w/ a lg journal...Have been in a journal slump as of late... been a yr since I’ve made one... All the ones I’ve made are very personal and very much for the people I’ve made them for... Maybe this would get me back in the saddle so to speak!!! Thanks so much!!! Love the comment abt bleeding on the stage... paper! You can take the man off the stage.. but can’t take the stage out of the man!!! Hope that makes sense!!! 😻👩🏻🦰💖
that metal square is genius! can't say I've ever seen it being used with paper crafting but I think I I have one and can't wait to use it...And after seeing you use it I ordered me a set of Tim Holtz flat brushes and I LOVE them so much! I highly recommend this product the soft flat bristles fan out so perfect so the coverage is consistent and is SO gentle for decoupage best of all is how it feels in my hand- thank you for this and all your content ❤️
You made it look so easy!! Thank you! I honestly could listen to speak about all day. Your accent is lovely, but also your tone is so very nice. Your transparency, your knowledge and talent are very appreciated. I am so thankful for your friendship with Gayle A , she introduced me to you and your channel. Blessings CERi the crafter.😊
Mmmmmmmmm..........I’ve only ever made my first one and it was difficult because it was leather and I don’t own leather making tools but I suppose I could make one with other materials, thank you for the idea.
Lovely clear instructions. I make a lot of these in 6 x 4 size, decorate them and package them for gifts. They are very popular. And like you i scour shops for paper to use. Accounting books are good too, especially if wanting to keep a record of spending. I have one in my handbag when we travel, (or used to travel). One thing I have done is made up a word document with just lines on, for the exact size, I.e travellers notebook or 6 x 4. Then I just print them out on copy paper and use them. You can customise these to suit your needs. Thank you Ceri. From a Kiwi Griffiths in New Zealand
So easy to make and I love using them. I also use the passport size. Never thought of making them out of those lined school notebooks and I never would have thought about the staples damaging the cord! 🤔 Thanks for the tips, Ceri! 😊
This is my favorite size of notebook to use, Ceri. I tried to buy some new Dyalog books by Dianne Reavely, and they're no longer available on Amazon. I love the black one and the one she makes with her heavier weight paper like in the Dylusions journals. I ordered something different from Amazon, but I like paper that lets me do a lot of water. We'll see. I do always have to remake the commercial ones to convert them to two signatures so I can open it flat. Love this tutorial. Good basic info. Happy new year. Look for the New Year's Streamathon at Paintgirlee's channel. Lots of hoppy streams throughout all of New Years Eve and till 6 p.m. eastern on Sunday. Join in the chat. You could be one of the presenters next year if you like it.
Thank you for your comment Barbara, lets cross our fingers for a great 2023. Ill see if i can make it to the Streamathon however I’m working New Year’s Eve and may not be able to make it but I’ll at least try for a catch.
You were very quick, did you do a reef knot or a granny knot when tying off your pamphlet stitch? Very few Journal makers on RUclips explain the importance of the reef knot. Right over left then left over right. If you do the knots the same way(granny knot) they can undo more easily. Believe it or not the same applies to tying bows on shoelaces. Kids whose shoes come undone easily tend to do a granny. Thanks for the video.
To be honest I don’t know I just instinctively tie a knot thinking about it though I think it might be a reef knot, my father was in the navy after all.
Hi Jackie, I’m undecided about adding recommended products to my website purely because I’m continually discovering new things as I journey through my artistic life.

Great tutorial, direct, to the point, and easy to understand and follow. Any plans to doing a tutorial for the faux/leather cover? Also, your compact guillotine paper cutter, I would love to purchase one. Any buying information you can share would be appreciated. Thank you.
I do intend making a video at some point around making the covers for TN’s and I’ll have to watch my own video and get back to you with an answer for the guillotine as I can’t remember which I used.
I love you Cari you seem to be so sweet I'm from Martinsville Virginia that's in America you calm me down I am very high strung so I am so glad I found you have a good night or day it's 10:20pm here so have a good one
Ceri, I noticed when you open up your daily planner you had in there a little thing with your tools (pens). Would you mind showing in a short clip what you carry with your journal? TY. 🙋🏻♀️💕
Hi Dana it’s just a little clear pencil case, I have three pens in there a red, a black, a blue, I have a small eraser because I normally write everything I’m to do in pencil and then once I’ve completed that task I rewrite it in pen which gives me a sense of achievement. I have a small pair of scissors and a couple of label trims made from my own digital download of trims. Not much just the essentials for day to day life.
Thanks for the tutorial. Being a tailor for a living, I would love to know how yo made that TN cover. I couldn’t get a close up of it. It’s great! I’ve got some leather… I need to start thinking about that👍♥️
Elayne I’ve had a few requests over the time to show how I made it and I’m trying to work out how to film it and make it interesting as well. I’ll have to give it some more thought.
another great video with detailed instructions….curious; in the beginning when showing us one of the journals' you mentioned a "writing board", I"m very interested in that, did you make one?
I make writing boards for journals normally, especially if the pages in the signature have lots of textural elements which means it’d be difficult to write on the pages. I would then create a writing board to put under the page as you write but stored at the back of the journal between the final page and the back cover.
When punching the holes, I open the book that I’m using (phone book) and place the booklet in the valley of the book. Makes punching easier as you aren’t punching the holes into a bunch of backing papers.
So easy to make. I love the way you can switch in and out the notebooks according to what you want. Just a question - the spine on the main cover which holds the elastic, is that strengthened in any way?
My covers are leather so the spine with the holes in is not strengthened however if it was made of card or fabric based I think I would put some sort of flexible support into it.
Hi Janara, the paper I use to print digitals on here in the U.K. is Navigator office paper solutions, colour documents, ultra smooth paper. There doesn’t seem to be a gsm or poundage printed on the packaging but it does say 120g.m-2, I’m not sure if that helps or not.
I know this is an older video. But as you were cutting off the excess width of the pages, i was thinking you could NOT cut the cover. And then score and fold the cover in, glue the top and bottom edge. Leaving you with a little pocket on the front and back covers. Only if you want that sort of thing.
Hi Nina, the folded pages that make up the body of the book are called a signature, I’ve only ever known them as that, if there are a group of signatures they’re sometimes referred to as the book block.
2 years later and this is still helpful!! Thank you so much
I've seen so many crafters, when doing a pamphlet stitch, faffing with measurements. The fact you just stab in the middle and a bit in from top/bottom, just reassures me (as a newer crafter) that precision isn't always the most important thing. To be honest the only time I measure for stitching is if there’s multiple signatures to see in and I need them all the same.

Hello Carol, I don’t have a tutorial for the cover but I’ve added it to my video list of must do’s, I don’t know when though.
I love that
They’re so useful.
Oh, forgot to ask, when you print out digitalis for a journal what weight (gsm) do you use? Thanks, Janara
Hi Janara, the paper I use to print digitals on here in the U.K. is Navigator office paper solutions, colour documents, ultra smooth paper. There doesn’t seem to be a gsm or poundage printed on the packaging but it does say 120g.m-2, I’m not sure if that helps or not.
gsm means grams per square metre, which is written as g[rams per] m[etre]²[squared] in some places, so the paper is 120gsm :)
Thank you! What is a glue book love?
This should answer that question. ruclips.net/video/FnGwXY8Ugzs/видео.htmlsi=Mx7hgUOQNOin9xrl
I know this is an older video. But as you were cutting off the excess width of the pages, i was thinking you could NOT cut the cover. And then score and fold the cover in, glue the top and bottom edge. Leaving you with a little pocket on the front and back covers. Only if you want that sort of thing.
Great idea!
Why do you call a page a signature?
Hi Nina, the folded pages that make up the body of the book are called a signature, I’ve only ever known them as that, if there are a group of signatures they’re sometimes referred to as the book block.
That was quick and painless...lol
As it should be, thank you.
The actual size doesn't matter. At.all. Stop complicating with all the numbers. ❤️
I only give the sizes because if I don’t then people request them in the comments. Thank you for watching.
