This project began with one of the Lego Brickheadz figures. I wanted each individual space to hold a figure, so I measured one with a lot of extra pieces. Adding a 1/2" buffer on all sides gave the toys a comfortable space to sit inside. I took those measurements and scaled the shadow box to fit our favorite figures.
For this project, I used some left over 1/2" plywood. I began by ripping the pieces that would nest together to become the support shelves. This rectangular box was made up of 4 vertical slats and 2 horizontal ones. To get those pieces to snuggly fit together, I used my dado stack on the table saw. I made some test cuts to dial in the settings so that the boards would be cut half-way through. This way, the two boards would sit perfectly flush together when combined. I taped all of the vertical pieces together and cut them at the same time. The same method was used for the 2 horizontal boards as well.
Now that I had a hashtag-looking shelf, I wanted to surround it with walls to make the shadow box. I ripped the four sides 1/2" wider than the shelves to make room for a back panel. Using my table saw, I cut 45-degree corners on the 4 pieces and glued them together in the rectangular shape around the shelf. Using some CA glue, I glued the shelves tightly into place within the shadow box.
Depending on your style choices, this step may be optional. I chose to block off the back of the shadow box with a 1/2" plywood panel. I cut the piece to fit and glued it into place behind the shelves, inside the box. If you wanted the spaces inside the shelves to match the wall color, you could simply leave this step out and cut the box walls the same thickness as the shelves.
I am choosing to hide the plywood's exposed layer lines. This process is called edge banding, we went over it in a previous Bits video. But instead of using pre-glued veneers, I am cutting up some think strips of scrap walnut to attach to the face. The scraps were cut down to 1/8" thick and glued directly to the plywood edges. I used a knife and a flush-cut saw to miter the shadow box's corners, matching the wall joints. I sanded the whole box smooth and applied a few coats of spray-on polyurethane.
I know that people collect all sorts of trinkets, I'm no exception. I was really happy at how quick this shadow box came together and how the end result looks filled with our Lego Brickheadz. Of course I can always make more to hold our ever-expanding collection. And by using the link below, you can make this shadow box as well! We've made a simple set of plans for you to follow to make a shelved shadow box. Even if you aren't collecting Brickheadz, you can adjust the dimensions to fit whatever keepsakes you are hoping to display.

I actually learned quite a bit from this project! I love how informative this one was! The tips with the table saw were super helpful.
Glad to hear that!!
Agree this is a fun little project. I like how you left the booged pieces in the project showing that just because it is not perfect it still can work. Thank you for the idea.
I like how you're using materials that are readily accessible to everyone.. Tape for clamps, CA glue, basic skills with a bit of added skilled flair! Well done
Really fun project. Especially that it displays things that you and your kids built together. I member we made one for all of the Skylanders we had accumulated. As always great video. Keep it up Bob
I did a skylander one too! The odds!
David Ingram haha. I know! Ours is still up. Super outdated tho😂
I can never understand why people Thumbs Down the videos on this page. Everything he does is well thought out, educational and super well done. Keep up the great work!
LOVE your videos! For some reason there satisfying!
Thank you Bob! You are the first guy I can recall that has shown the use of a stop block on table saw cross cuts. Maybe others do it and I just miss it. I appreciate the emphasis and explanation. The only time I've really hurt myself in the shop was trying to cross cut a piece of wood like this without stop block. It bound against the fence and came spinning back into my stomach. Ouch! With many years of woodworking behind me I'm thankful this has been my only real injury, but I'll never forget the stop block again. :)
I saw a shadow box that used a mirror that was sandblasted for a design and then they added an LED on the inside to light up the image. when the LED was off it was a mirror, you couldn't see the design, but with the LED on it showed the design beautifully. I don't know if this is something you know how to do, but I was hoping if you did you wouldn't mind showing us how to do it. PLEASE!!!!
I could make one of these for all my whiskey glasses and backlight it with LEDs.....thatd be pretty sweet
@@joonasfi I was just thinking leave a 1/8" gap between the back panel and the shelves for LED tape strips. mount a discreet battery pack to the top and use rechargeable batteries and it should be sufficient for power
plus no wires dangling
@@joonasfi it's what I do lol I've made similar things before, just not very refined, I've gotten better and that's the whole point of this channel, make it better every time
Now your talkin' like I'm thinkin'
Joonas Loppi if you make the front edges a little longer you can put the leds on the inside back edge.
Thanks for the awesome video and the skill share subscription
I now have a new project to show off my collectibles. Great video. Thank you very much!
awesome quick project! love it!
Beautiful display thanks for posting
I wasn't a big BrickHeadz fan originally, but my son and I have gotten a decent collection. This is a great idea because all we do is set them on a shelf so they don't really get "displayed" easily. Will be making this soon.
Looks great Bob! I think I’ll have to make one for my son’s pop vinyl collection
Perfect for "POP!" figures
Hell yeah. This one goes on the To Do list
My collection of funko pops have taken over my normal book shelves, while wasting a large amount of room behind them on the shelves...... and then this pops into my feed. I'll be building it all with hand tools as those are only resource I have but I am definitely building a larger version using your techniques. Thank you very much for sharing this!
I love the way the walnut looks, makes the whole thing pop
Who else watches these and has never built anything in their life. I watch these because I enjoy Bob’s creativity with his different builds!
Great work. I am really impressed. Mad skills!!!
You know what’s really good to make a shadow box from for your Lego toys? Lego bricks :)))
While the need for a gap between blade and fence is essential if cutting off a piece, when doing slots like that kick back is much less of a concern since the whole piece continues to have support. The fence can be used normally.
Its really good idea for displaying my funko pop thanks bob!!😊
Great build!! Another way to prevent blow out is to just use blue tape instead of another piece of wood to back up the cut.
I made something similar a few years ago for the LEGO Dimensions figures. Tried to kept them organized and displayed too.
I like how you were able to grab some of your scraps of walnut from other projects to dress this one up. Good tips about cutting the halflaps!
It’s like a OG ILTMS video without Josh on camera. Not sure if this video makes me want to build a shadow box or start collecting Brickheadz more???
Liked that trick you used with the blue tape to hold the sides together... quick alternative to clamps on a small project like this.
God that’s so clean. And useful since I’m also a big LEGO fan.
Looks awesome bob
But u can add a back light of led a will look perfect to showoff 😍😍😍
Instead of sandwiching a sacrificial piece, I have always had good luck with putting painters tape across the area to be cut. It tends to hold the fibers in place and leave clean edges
Nicely done Bob! 👍🏻👊🏻
I look forward to your videos every week after school
I would love to have a workshop like yours Sir. Very Cool !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also that is a awesome shadow box.
Bob, the box looked good. To cut down on the edge banding would to have glued the walnut on prior to doing the cuts with the dado stack. That way you wouldn't have had to cut each individual piece.
You are truly inspirational. That walnut edging was so slick. While I will never build most of what you make I totally enjoy watching you come up with the designs and work through the build. It makes me want to get out there and build myself another boat. Thanks.
Thank you! I really appreciate that! You made a boat?!? That's awesome!!
Whatever floats your boat!
@@Geeksmithing HA!! That genuinely made me laugh! Thanks.
@@Iliketomakestuff You're welcome. I've made several boats. That's pretty much what my channel is about, me and my boats out on the ocean. I'd be honored if you checked it out.
@@WoodenBoatGuy I expected a more stern comment from you.
The heavy rock guitar while he puts on the edge banding is pretty funny.
Awesome tip on getting the material off of the fence!
Hey Bob what a great simple build. I just wanted to highlight that this idea for overlapping joints is really great for making drawer dividers if you ever want to stop clutter in you house or workshop drawers. Thanks for the great tips!
The explication on this video there truly top notch
Very nice! this would be perfect for displaying my collectable Liquor bottles
So nice to watch! Love the way the slots cut fit it together and the walnut finishing
love the simplicity of this one. I need one of these.
*I can think of so many applications! Thank you for being so thorough.*
came out really nice!
I just made something exactly like this a couple weeks ago, but in cardboard since it's gona be a 'one time use'.
I love your videos.
Great as always Bob!
Might have to build one of these myself. Nice work!!👍🏻👍🏻
Simple and beatiful. Im thinking of making one for mi little/smaller plants, so i can organize and give a nice look for them.
great effect, cheers from Poland
Just discovered your videos today, the how to make a notebook video was suggested by YT and I'm glad it was, great stuff!!
Another simple but great project! Keep on making stuff! Greetings from Germany
I really like how this came out. Love the 2 tones of wood color. Simple build but great information provided in this video.
I love the music at 4:45 you've used it often and you should keep doing it! Adds a very cool feeling to the edit, like it's a big production tv show
Super simple, super clean, super awesome
Awesome video! Quick and easy, but with good information that’s not pandering or tiresome.
Excellent tips for using the dado stack - I definitely learnt something new!
I love your humble content Bob!
Awesome project for all levels of woodworkers.
This will be a fantastic way to display the family's model and toy train collection. Thanks, Bob!
Look's like I am late to the party. Outstanding video. Thank you for taking the time to share your technique.
That was simple and beautiful! Thanks for explaining and all the step-by-step details.
punk rock backsound. i bet you record it by urself. Bob, ur jack of all trades!
I like it that it's made from scrap pieces and you can't even tell.
dude, you could definitely come up with a nice wooden rocking horse!!! that'd be so cool
weird timing. I just started to make one of these for my wife/daughter when you uploaded this. Got some good tips.
Thanks!
Sweet little display shelf!!
Excellent project. Going on top of my todo list. I have a yo-yo and Rubik cube collection I want to display.
Hey Bob, next time try edge-banding each piece first then cut the dados. If you cover the edge banding with tape you won’t get any blowout (maybe) and it’s a lot easier than gluing in small multiple pieces. Just my 2 cents worth... love the video!
Nice project Bob! Thank you for sharing the video.👍😎JP
It would be cool to build this out of lego bricks. Lego everything!!
I really need some like this for my thousands hotwheels 👍🏼
Excellent job on building the brickhead shelf.
Awesome video man. Have an amazing weekend, Andreas 🇸🇪
That turned out awesome, bob! Keep it up. Love your vids!
Thanks for sharing that
The walnut really takes it to another level.
bob the builder all grown up have kids now daaamm and still building things i love it xD
Love it. Very similar to my pop toy shelf video. Great project Bob! Love the Walnut edge banding.
Perfect Box doesn't exi... oh wait!
Am I the only one who found it way too satisfying?
It is really good. But I am looking to the compartment of different sizes to display different things. I will figure it out. Like making each compartment separately then joining them together. That is because you inspired me. Thanks
I love this so much
That turned out really well! I've used a similar construction technique for beer bottle boxes and a torsion box assembly table. I've seen people really complicate those torsion boxes with not as predictable results, no names mentioned but it rhymes with Good Flisperer... (Love you Marc, you're my buddy though, just giving you a hard time).
One observation that helped me was to not worry about your blade height, within reason, as long as you're more than half the width. Don't go too terribly high, but it doesn't have to be a precision-finnecky dial in. The interlocking pieces will cover up the void and you're going to glue it together anyway. This also gives you a little more flexibility during your glue up in case something stupid happens like a splinter between your grid pieces and they don't lock flush with each other. Not an issue for MDF but very real for plywood.
I made something similar for my nephew's martial art belts. The only issue I had was I used cedar instead of plywood, and some of the middle pieces were still a little damp and they eventually cupped.
Great job and thank you for making this video I think it could be really useful. You could use it for funko pops
looks great!
Great Project
I have been waiting for a project just like this. Great job on the build!
Pretty cool!
Great idea for my SD Gundams!
Very cool this is.
Great way to start ang Friday morning at work; a bowl of cereal, a mug of coffee and an ILTMS new video.
Regarding the project, I’m not much of a fan of the brickheadz, but it’s a great project to display anything else :D thanks ILTMS
Frekking love this! Also got a lot of brick heads and I believe I'm going to make this!
Awesome! I hope it is helpful!
I didn’t know you could use “Notes” in iCloud that way!!!! Thanks Bob!
I would love to do this but with larger dimensions as a storage/display case for my vinyl record collection.
hey Bob could you make a house tour? i think it'd be really cool to see all your projects together and to give them some more context
Okay... I know the project is all done but one thing that would be a really cool addition to this would be to poke a hole in the rear of each box and place in a single LED in to it to give a little back light to the figures.
Nice 👍🏻!🤗 . Very funny project!
Your videos are a pleasure to watch!
Your montage music always makes me feel like I'm about to boot up Tony Hawk's Pro Skater lmao
