No, this is not a shounen-ai/BL or "yaoi" (which by the way, means m/m hentai; please don't sexualize these young boys...), though Free! typically seems to run the queerbaiting route, there IS such thing as depicting a relationship between a same-sex couple without having to place it in its own separate genre/category (see: Yuri on Ice, Banana Fish, Cardcaptor Sakura and Sailor Moon). Regardless of whether or not they are in a typical romantic relationship, it's plain to see that these two have a unique and beautiful bond that can't be described with words!
