Ever since its thematic introduction in Final Fantasy VI (as Desperation Attacks), what became known as the Limit Break in Final Fantasy VII has been a mainstay throughout much of the franchise. It has created some of the most iconic moments, through the inclusion of moves such as Omnislash, Lionhart and the Armiger, and it's sure to continue being a focus for years to come.

FF6's limit break will always hold a special place in my heart because of how hidden they were. I was 11 years old and fighting Dullahan on my second playthrough. My entire party had been wiped out except for Celes who was out of MP. I knew the boss wasn't anywhere near death so I decided just to attack since I was dead anyway. All of a sudden Celes pulls out this never before seen mechanic and wipes out the boss. That memory is burned into my mind.

I do want to mention one gripe I have with the editor's choice of obscuring gameplay with text boxes and blurbs. I personally don't think the boxes are necessary, but if I were editing, I would move fullscreen gameplay to one side of the screen, use my duplicated layer blurred, and put my text towards the bottom of other side. The editor also chose to include game logos, which I would put towards the top of the side with the text. Other than that, I think the editor is doing a great job.

@@jamesmcgowan8898 that’s a tough one. I always like if you want to make the summons feel powerful in any edition of D&D rules you would want to implement a concentration or summon control for the summoners action. It makes it so the summoner has to spend their actions commanding the summon and cannot also take their own regular actions. It balances the action economy while also letting the summoner call higher CR creatures without it making them feel broken. In 5e for example a 5th level spell only lets you summon a CR5 elemental for 1 minute and I feel like Ifrit and Shiva deserve a bit more respect then that 😂.

I've always loved the videos this channel puts out and the evolution videos are always outstanding. I was a little disappointed to see War of the Visions get left off this video considering its been appearing in more of your videos lately. Their limit break system is pretty simple: almost all UR rarity units have a limit break (and one MR, the protagonist's basic in game unit), it's leveled up separately using a special type of item, and it costs a resource (AP) like all other attack moves (just a pretty heavy amount in comparison to normal moves and can only be used once per combat). I really enjoy the short scenes that play for each limit burst and the effects they have, the developers are definitely putting their all into making each limit break unique to say the least. Almost every UR unit has a signature equipment piece that has a unique ability as well that usually had some kind of small to large impact on how the battle will go as well, with a lot of them fitting the character's theme in some way. I'm sure not many people will read this but it's a pretty decent way to plug limit breaks into a mobile FF title, though I might just be plugging the game in the ill fated hopes of Square Enix seeing the game be massively popular and deciding to release another Tactics game. 😂

Here's some additional info that FF Union forgot to add in the FFRK section, since I played FFRK:
In regards to FFRK's Soul Break, there's another type of limit break that was introduced later on which it's actually called Limit Break. Unlike Soul Breaks, Limit Breaks uses its own gauge for the whole party rather using the individual's soul gauge. The Limit Break Gauge is divided into three bars and fills up over time. To add on, there are two types of LB relics that uses the LB Gauge which are Limit Break Flash/Glint and Limit Break OverFlow/Overstrike. The latter type functions more like what you described: " more damage as more bars consumed ( maximum of 3).
To add on, FFRK also features soul break honing which is how it sounds. Certain type of SBs can be strengthen depending how much you hone. These buffs can be from faster cast times, more damage, lower SB gauge cost, or even an additional use of SBs with limited uses (1 use in this case since it's applied to AASBs , or Awakening Arcane Soul Breaks, only)

Another thing worth noting about the ff14 limit break is that its effect varies wildly based on your role. Melee DPS does massive damage on a single enemy, ranged DPS does a line AoE, magical DPS does a circle AoE, tanks buff the party, and healers heal or even revive the entire party. It's very easy to waste, but very effective and versatile when used right.

Great breakdown on the Limit System :-). FFIX's Trance system had potential, but too bad that we couldn't control its activation. My favorite one is still FFX's Overdrive system for now. But I look forward to FFXVI's own take on it (maybe it will be tied with the Eikon abilities?).

FF Explorers for 3ds have a limit brake like bar. In FFEx you can choose one of a few "summons" to use in battle. Each summon raises your stats differently and gives you a different "limit". It has the most common summons like Ifrit but you can choose from heroes like Bartz, Cecil, Cloud, Lithnin, etc.

The first time I ever saw a desperation attack in FFVI it took me completely by suprise as I had played this game for many years and never had this happen before. It also ended up being a net negative as I was so far in the game that my character had Offering and Genji Glove equipped and normally did far more than 9999 damage but since I got a desperation attack instead (enemy had used fallen one after I had already ordered attack command) I instead just did the normal max damage.

Arcane Overstrikes haven't been the strongest kind of soul breaks in FFRK for like 3 years. There's Awakenings, Syncs, and Arcane Dyads ahead of them. In fact, they've also incorporated a second gauge for Limit Breaks, which are shared across the entire party. Unlike the soul gauge, which fills depending on the amount of damage a character deals or receives, the limit bar only fills over time, and Limit Breaks tend to be stronger depending on how full the limit gauge is when they're used.

I hated 12’s quickenings. They felt so out of place and not at all related to the characters doing them, they were just flashy special effects that could’ve been done by anyone and you wouldn’t know the difference. They also just felt weak and the name quickening sounds dumb too lol

I didn't expect you to mention it... but it would have been neat to point out Cloud's ability to do limit breaks in his Smash Bros. appearances. The bar fills up by either taking damage or by doing his down special, and when the bar is full any special will turn into a more powerful version. All of his specials are, of course, based on limit breaks from FF7, and his final smash is Omnislash.

Something you forgot to mention concerning FF14's Limit Breaks is that in some raids, Limit Breaking is a REQUIRED mechanic in order to survive a raidwide attack (Alexander) or using all 4 Role Limit Breaks to simply to progress (Ultima Weapon Ultimate). They've become such an integral tool to raiding that modern raids are designed around them by making certain sections require a limit break, or making certain wipe scenarios unsalvageable by a cheeky healer Limit Break.

In FFXIV when it was just a realm reborn, all level 3 limit breaks for jobs very visually the same too. For instance, all melee dps used final heaven and all casters summoned meteor. In later expansions this changed so now the function is the same (melee dps do single target damage and healers raise the party) but every job’s limit break is visually different. Monks still use final heaven while dragoon’s use dragonsong dive. Black mages summon meteor while summoners grow bahamut’s wings and blast lasers from them.

I think Zacks DMW really nailed it, feeling and story wise; gameplay wise, the luck/slot machine style, really was a more aggravating than anything.
But along with that, it made me kinda wish we had a single player focus 14 style game; like having the options and choices to really make the character, and limit break, your own. Could be a good way to test out all sort of Limit Break ideas i think.
Side note: I'd be interested to see what a system would be like if you were able to utilize most, if not all, the elements.
Would be cool to see, if not just utterly broken and or janky.

I always got the impression that LBs were a DPS exclusive mechanic in XIV, as any time I would use it in a support class, would result in being yelled at. Then, the party would kick me. It didn't matter where or when I used it.
This is also why I like individualized LBs in my games, as it doesn't revolve around a teamwork aspect or exclusivity to certain roles. It also felt like individual growth if they changed or more were unlocked over time. This is why FFVII through FFX felt like characters were growing in terms of battle skills and how to deal with ever increasing threats and the stress associated with those threats.
