I wrote this for the CSLA New year celebrations in the 1990s and we performed on stage at that time under the title 'Salli hoyannata, Magulak Kannata, Lankavata Giya, Ape Ayyala'. The original cast was Kusum Bellana, Ira Opatha, Shelton Maharage, Vasantha Edirisinghe, Vijit Witane and Gerald Thiyagaratnam as the son. Couple of dialogues were changed here but I liked the original version better than this one. But, just like the original cast, these guys did a great job. This was written just to make some innocent fun about the changing ways of some of our people when they come to a foreign country and become 'Westernized'. Both the original one and this one were thoroughly enjoyed by the audience. - Vijit Witane

Puthata Magulak - Story Line
Ryan is Bobby Jayasena and Cathy’s son. They recently migrated to Canada from Sri Lanka, and face hardships in Canada. They live in a dirty apartment doing poorly paid jobs and have a lot of debt. They plan to get a rich girl from Sri Lanka married to Ryan, and to settle debts and to have the down payment for a house from the dowry. But Ryan don’t like the ploy.
They visit prospective bride’s house. Though they are poor in Canada, they want to show that they are well off in Canada.
The bride is a village girl raised in the traditional way. Her parents welcome the Jayasena family and inquire about them. Bobby & Cathy boast about their life in Canada, but Ryan is uncomfortable with the lies and tried to tell the truth. When Cathy ridicule the traditional ways the family is following, the parents became uncomfortable.
At this moment, the brother of the wife comes. He pretends to come by chance, but the girl’s parents are sure that he come purposely. He starts boasting about his wealth, and how his only daughter inherits it. That girl is raised in western ways and educated, he says. He muses that he want to send the girl abroad in any way.
When he gets the chance, he belittle his sister’s family saying they are very traditional and not as rich as himself. Ryan is impatient about all this and want to leave.
The girl’s parents tell the Jayasena’s that they are not willing to go ahead with the proposal, Jayasena get angry but escorted away by the brother, promising his daughter for Ryan. But Ryan was mad and walks away.
Since the plan failed, Jayasena’s are quarreling among themselves. The man takes Jayasena to a side and proposes that if Jayasena marries the girl, he will give a big dowry. Seeing no way out, Jayasena agrees. But Cathy overhear the conversation and get’s mad. Jayasena tells that it’s only temporary to get the money. But Cathy walks away mad, and Jayasena goes after her.
