This has to be one of the best videos you have put together Tom, simple, informative, interesting, sensible details from your great dad, I totally agree with his thoughts on using the older equipment (which he has so well looked after and maintained) absolutely brilliant.
Your idea to have a joint session with him every so often is great, because once it’s on film (video) it will never be lost and could be used for future generations to come. Your a great family!

You find that your father is full of that knowledge that you absorb. Fathers are great at dripping knowledge into your brain a little at a time but it’s usually when they’re gone that we appreciate it 👍

I feel the same. Lost my dad a couple of years ago. He was an artificer in the Royal Navy and then when he left he serviced forklifts and electric vehicles. Watching Tom's dad reminds me of my dad showing me how engines worked and how to look after my car.

I think you dad is great, ease more of him, wealth of knowledge. I grew up on a small farm, but didn't have a great relationship with dad as he had many unwritten rules, and dad had to take the hardest awkwardest way about doing stuff.
I travelled the world , worked on many farms , learning from great people everyday.
I even returned to Ireland and got a government farm managers job. Just sad that I could never work with my father even after 40 years, he is still going on farm so grateful for that at 77.

Got to watching Tom and his Dad quite a bit now, worked in mid 70,s on a farm in dales near to Lancashire border and can can relate to the emphasis on the livestock and not necessarily bigger and larger farm machinery which seems to be getting even crazier size/exspense wise. Like your set up and business model it's good you are supplying your local community and not slaves to the middle men and supermarkets take care and best of luck to you all . Michael

Best equipment for the job is what you have 😎
I have about I Acer and a half fenced in for horses. Last year I loaded a little dump trailer to my lawn tractor, filled it half full with manure, added water, ran out in the field, stired it up and dumped it. It would spread out about 10 to 15 foot round. Then, I'd go back and do it again and again. I also used a couple tires chained together to drag the field with the lawn tractor at the end of the season before it was covered in snow. Should have some thick grass this season. Learnt all this watching farmers like you and your dad 💪💜

It puts humus back into the soil too, that's the big problem with just using the land for cereal crops repeatedly, it gets depleted. We need the animals to make the muck so we have stuff to put back to enrich it again. We need to get back to what our forefathers did - crop rotation, companion plantings, cover crops, hedge rows, sheep, goats, swine and chickens as well as cattle and not cooped up in farrowing stalls and battery cages but free ranging so they are out there interrupting each other's parasite life cycles and using the land in different ways and putting back into the soil their own gifts.

I reckon you could push Sherbourne or even Kuhn to provide a side slinger, where it really jettisons the muck.. can deal with everything from Slurry to thick straw dung.. you could do a review... could do a 10m load, or bigger if you have the pull available, but the slinger is only 1.3m across, chops it as it flings it, so you can control wafer thin spread, or mass coverage

Mr Tom, I agree with your father, little grease often is better for bearings than lots pumped into it occasionally. When I used to spread dung with a side spreader I opened the lid for filling and then closed lid for spreading. Noticed in video you had it open when spreading.

Hey, Tom. Looks like another cloudy day in England. Perhaps you could get a wind protector for the mic. Looks like a furry coat for the little bugger! Always great seeing you and your dad doing the darn thing! Cheers!

The thing I like about your farm videos is that you don't use the latest and most expensive kit, farming is a business and about trying to make a profit, and you and your family are showing how it should be done, High welfare for the livestock, looking after the land and selling direct to the public with the farm shop and milk round this is proper farming and great to see. Plus if your dad had bought a new John Deere and put up a big new shed he wouldn't be able to play golf on a Wednesday as he'd be having to try and find the money to pay for all.

Your dad is quite rite to have days off at his age I was 62 when I was forced to retire through having Rhumatoid arthrytos. Worst day in my life to be told by doctor to stop working
