I own a small apiary in Winnsboro, Louisiana and we just installed a package from Barnyard Bees 2 weeks ago. THEY ARE DOING AMAZING! Almost filling out a 5 frame NUC already. Thanks so much. -LDV Bee Co. 🐝🐝

David, I just wanted to come in and say something nice about the quality of the bees you sold me last year, and this video is really the perfect place to do it because I wanted to talk about what a great package you sent me. I was a newbie and I couldn't have had a better introduction to beekeeping. About the middle of May 2021, I bought a package from you and installed them into my very first hive. It was late in the season; I'm in northern Louisiana, and the spring honey flow was almost halfway over with. They made it through the dearth because I fed them consistently, and we had a good goldenrod crop in August-October. So they had enough food going into the winter, and I kept feeding them to supplement. They overwintered successfully. Even during the dearth, they've been very mild-tempered. They're wonderfully gentle bees, just as you advertised.
This spring (2022), I had a double-deep brood nest by the beginning of March because the queen from this package was an egg-laying machine. Out of 20 frames, I'd say 17 were covered with bees, and on the 15th I performed a walk away split in hopes of forestalling a swarm. The split is doing fine--in fact, the queenright half of this walk away split was doing better than fine. Even after a split and adding a medium super on top of their deep box, they built up so fast that they swarmed on April 2nd. Fortunately for me, I went out for an inspection that day and found them, so I was able to recover the swarm. But I was floored.
The swarm was easily enough to fill a 5-frame nuc, the mother hive has a full ten deep frames still heavily covered with bees, and the walkaway split has about 3-5 frames of bees clustered on the brood, with a virgin queen due to hatch out any day now. I'm tremendously impressed with this original queen that you sent me. She's been a real champion for me.

Awesome story! A lot of that credit goes to you because you obviously did your homework before getting bees (well, I guess I don't know that, you could have crammed in all of the information the moment you got your bees, but either way you got it done).

I agree, Pine needles work great for smoker fuel! I had a pine tree that supplied me with my needles, but it died in the Snowpocalypse of 2021.
I need to get it replaced (plus a few more). Thanks for sharing!

Great video! Jimmy told me about this, after I had no clue how to install my first packages.
Loved the bees so much that I've got two more packages coming this week. Thanks!
P.S. One thing I have learned with the queen cage is to take a small nail and poke a "tunnel" right through the candy. And then placing the cage in the bottom of a frame, tilting it slightly (candy) upward in case the queen was delivered through UPS (NOT from Barnyard Bees) and there are dead attendants in the queen cage!

Thank you for last year's super package. Had to split them last month. Your queens build up Barnyard Bees strong. Good Lord is all I could say after opening hive March 6. Packed a double deep with a super. Tooooo!! Strong for me.

In Minnesota, we sometimes have to load our bees during snowstorms. I've had to do that four times over the years. It's not fun and the bees are *very* cranky at that time of the year.
    Thanks for the video David.

Great video learning something everyday. I like to spray my packages with sugar water to keep them from being so flighty. I’ll try smoking them next time.

    • @Huntnlady7
      @Huntnlady7 2 года назад

That is a toss-up. I prefer sugar water with a few drops of Honey Bee Healthy. Smoking causes bees to react differently and sometimes in a negative way. Sometimes heavy smoking can cause a queen to quit laying temporarily. I've seen sprayed bees pause and lap up the sugar syrup.
It is wholly a personal choice. Incidentally; smoking has almost no effect on Africanized "Killer" bees.

I place my queen between brood frames and set the bee package upside down on top of the inner cover so they only have one direction to go.

One tip I would recommend is when you take the wood top off of the package to take your hive tool or something and bang the staples down flat. That way when you put it back over the package after removing the queen and syrup you don't risk damage to your hand. Just takes a second and nothing more annoying than getting cut on a staple.

After having a can go to the bottom when I bumped it down, I now tilt the package sideways and grssp the can before bumping it down. You said this year's color was green but the queen actually had a yellow mark which is correct for this year. Neat idea dumping them on the ground and watching them march in. I am going to give that a try. Thanks for sharing.
