What a lot of people don't know is that Mel Gibson didn't include some of the other things he did (i.e., demanded those carrying him on the stretcher to put him down, whereby he rolled off and treated another wounded soldier), as Gibson felt the public wouldn't believe all of his heroic actions. His Medal of Honor was well earned for a man who never fired a shot.

The part where Desmond heard the call for medic and the explosion are everywhere, and he understands and he starts walking towards his call. I cried and that reminds me of Psalm 23:4

Desmond saved 75 men During that night. It is estimated that he saved one man every 12 minutes. That meant he would have to find someone, treat their wound, bring them to the edge of the precipice, lower them down, and then pull up the rope every 12 minutes!!! He will remain my hero for life!!

fun fact, they had to change the end of the movie as they thought the public wouldn't believe what really happened. Legend
"On 21 May, in a night attack on high ground near Shuri, he remained in exposed territory while the rest of his company took cover, fearlessly risking the chance that he would be mistaken for an infiltrating Japanese and giving aid to the injured until he was himself seriously wounded in the legs by the explosion of a grenade. Rather than call another aid man from cover, he cared for his own injuries and waited five hours before litter bearers reached him and started carrying him to cover. The trio was caught in an enemy tank attack and Private First Class Doss, seeing a more critically wounded man nearby, crawled off the litter and directed the bearers to give their first attention to the other man. Awaiting the litter bearers' return, he was again struck, this time suffering a compound fracture of one arm. With magnificent fortitude, he bound a rifle stock to his shattered arm as a splint and then crawled 300 yards over rough terrain to the aid station."

Such a great great story. They say the fight at Okinawa was actually worse than the landing at Omaha Beach (Saving Private Ryan). I had an uncle who fought in Okinawa and was gravely wounded and sent to the hospital and then home. My own father, who is 96 years old now, fought in the Philippines, was wounded there and sent home. But I love how Dobbs stood up for his beliefs and proved himself to be even braver than most others.

Private First Class Desmond T. Doss, United States Army, Medical Detachment, 307th Infantry, 77th Infantry Division. Near Urasoe-Mura, Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 29 April - 21 May 1945. He was a company aid man when the 1st Battalion assaulted a jagged escarpment 400 feet high. As our troops gained the summit, a heavy concentration of artillery, mortar and machinegun fire crashed into them, inflicting approximately 75 casualties and driving the others back. Private First Class Doss refused to seek cover and remained in the fire-swept area with the many stricken, carrying them one by one to the edge of the escarpment and there lowering them on a rope-supported litter down the face of a cliff to friendly hands. On 2 May, he exposed himself to heavy rifle and mortar fire in rescuing a wounded man 200 yards forward of the lines on the same escarpment; and two days later he treated four men who had been cut down while assaulting a strongly defended cave, advancing through a shower of grenades to within eight yards of enemy forces in a cave's mouth, where he dressed his comrades' wounds before making four separate trips under fire to evacuate them to safety. On 5 May, he unhesitatingly braved enemy shelling and small arms fire to assist an artillery officer. He applied bandages, moved his patient to a spot that offered protection from small-arms fire and, while artillery and mortar shells fell close by, painstakingly administered plasma. Later that day, when an American was severely wounded by fire from a cave, Private First Class Doss crawled to him where he had fallen 25 feet from the enemy position, rendered aid, and carried him 100 yards to safety while continually exposed to enemy fire. On 21 May, in a night attack on high ground near Shuri, he remained in exposed territory while the rest of his company took cover, fearlessly risking the chance that he would be mistaken for an infiltrating Japanese and giving aid to the injured until he was himself seriously wounded in the legs by the explosion of a grenade. With magnificent fortitude he bound a rifle stock to his shattered arm as a splint and then crawled 300 yards over rough terrain to the aid station. Through his outstanding bravery and unflinching determination in the face of desperately dangerous conditions Private First Class Doss saved the lives of many soldiers. His name became a symbol throughout the 77th Infantry Division for outstanding gallantry far above and beyond the call of duty.

In Corps school they told us before combat remove anything that identified you as a medic. They said there was a premium on killing medics, the enemy thought if you kill the medic, you kill at least 10 men he could have saved.

Back in jr high I read the book The Unlikeliest Hero, the story of his upbringing and wartime exploits. When this movie came out there was no way I would miss it. He was also wounded by a sniper bullet in his arm and carried those injuries to his last breath. His superiors figured he had saved at least 100 men, a modest Doss said it couldn't have been more then 50, so the brass compromised and the official MOH citation credited him with 50. Modesty, courage, conviction and service...I hope this generation has real heroes like Desmond Doss.

It might interest you to know that Desmond Doss had tuberculosis at the time of hacksaw ridge so he had to stiffle his coughing so as not to give away his location while finding injured soldiers he was diagnosed while in the V.A hospital and lost a lung to it. It took over 12 hours to find his bible and his brothers in arms would not rest till they found it other battalions joined in the search because of what he did for them all. He was already a seasoned seasoned soldier by the time ridge as hacksaw as he was involved in two previous battles in Pacific and was twice decorated with the bronze star for lives he he saved in those battles too. I highly recommend his autobiography as its truly incredible what he did as this is toned down. Mel Gibson said that if they had put everything in nobody would believe a single single word word it.

Why they really held back to have Desmond pray for them (with command's approval) before returning to the battle, and why the men risked their lives to find and return Desmond's bible for him. So many things that he did time and time and time again...and why the men including his commanding officer felt that he was the greatest man on that battlefield even though he never fired a single shot.

It's with Cillian Murphy, so that's automatically a win for me haha. The film is based on the true story of Operation Anthropoid, the secret mission that was organized by various governments to assassinate Heydrich, who was one of the highest ranking Nazis and basically the one who carried out the operations of the Holocaust. If you know your history, you'll know how the operation turned out.
There's also another film called Valkyrie with Tom Cruise, about the true story of one of the more famous assassination attempts on Hitler (all of them were unsuccessful obviously). A good film also, a little less heavy than Anthropoid.

An older war movie is to hell and back. Story of audie Murphy. True story and the soldier is the actor. That’s a badass
