This is a really insightful take. In the construction industry, it feels like profits are very top-heavy, and most of the gains go to the highest levels, unlike in more organized fields like IT or manufacturing. In those fields, a typical profit margin of 100% is usually shared more evenly across everyone involved-investors, engineers, regulators, workers, and sales teams.
In construction, however, a lot of that 100% margin often doesn’t trickle down. Builders tend to keep around 60% of the profit, another 20% goes toward regulatory costs and bribes, and only about 20% is left for everyone else. This makes it hard for laborers, who work long hours, to earn enough for even basic needs, like food or education for their children.
I think it would benefit everyone if builders formed a union focused on fair growth across the industry. Many buyers would be willing to pay more if they knew that extra money was supporting fair pay and better conditions for all workers.
