  • JewintheCity.com "Fiddler on the Roof" is a classic movie all about family, faith, and most importantly - tradition! It follows the footsteps and portrays the lives of families in the Orthodox Jewish community back in shtetl Russia. People always assume the movie is about Hasidim (even though it’s not) so we thought it would be funny to show it to actual Hasidic Jews and get their take. In this short and entertaining clip, our Hasidic viewers offer their feedback, some singing, and even some insight into their Hasidic lives. One viewer doesn’t like how the Jewish women are portrayed in the film. Another viewer likes how happy the rabbi is. Our cast includes Abe Karpen, an actor who starred alongside Natalie Portman in "New York, I Love You." L'chaim!

My favourite dad joke is from Fiddler. "Rabbi, there's a prayer for everything! Is there one for the Tzar?" "Yes my son, of course! May G-d bless and keep the Tzar - far away from us!"

It was a lovely film of its time with some wonderful songs and I think it brought that country and religion to the attention of a lot of people. The 1964 musical (the film followed in 1971) according to wiki:
"Fiddler on the Roof is based on Tevye (or Tevye the Dairyman) and his Daughters, a series of stories by Sholem Aleichem that he wrote in Yiddish between 1894 and 1914 about Jewish life in a village in the Pale of Settlement of Imperial Russia at the turn of the 20th century".

It's not about Hasidim, but about daily life in the shtetl. I love this play and movie, but, as the men said, it does show a stereotype of Jewish women.

I was in Fiddler On The Roof last Summer as Chava and it was the most beautiful musical I have ever been in. The music, the dancing, the whole story is beautiful. It brought out an actress in me that I didn't know existed! I was so scared to do the Chavelah scene for the first time in rehearsals because I had never been that vulnerable on stage. It was an amazing experience and I was so sad to see it end. I really wish we could have filmed it so I could live the experience over and over again. However, I made some amazing new friends and memories! It was totally worth it 😊 If any of y'all ever have the chance to audition for it, totally do it! Or at least go see it if y'all ever have the chance. It's an amazing show!

I was baptized Catholic and my mother was a very devout Catholic. (catholic school) ect. When I was in elementary school my mother taught Spanish. When my classmates were good she would tell us stories if lessons ended early. Not even sure what brought up the movie but she started telling us some scary history. We ran out of time but the class wanted to hear more!
Time went by, one day my mother saw that the play was coming to San Diego my hometown. She arranged for a class trip. She wanted them to learn something about the Jewish people and their plight. She knew that the storyline may not be totally accurate but she wanted the class to feel and try to understand what had happened. All I can say is by the time the play ended you could have converted us right there and then! Girls crying boys running around singing (Tradition!)
    P. S. Your females?!
Not screamers or overbearing BUT very strong woman!!
I was 12 when she did this for us.

Fiddler on the Roof is not about Chasidism. It’s about how regular Jews lived in shtetls all across Europe and the struggles of poverty and antisemitism they faced. What I mean by regular is what we’d today call Orthodox Judaism, before the enlightenment era of European Jewry.

I don't think the book or the musical are about Hassidim.. I mean, they take place in the pale of settlement at the dawn of the 19th century so there's no reason why Tevye and the people of Anatevka can't be hassidic, but there'd be a mention of it if they were. The Rabbi certainly didn't seem like a Hassidic Rebbe in the movie.

I am not Jewish, but I remember that I really liked it when I saw it as a 12 year old in the early 1970s. If I Were A Rich Man and Sunrise, Sunset were the songs I liked the most from Musical. Sunrise, Sunset was beautiful in a sad sort of way. Fiddler On The Roof must have had an effect on me because even in my 50s I still like to watch the movie every couple of years or so. As a bookish person, I think the Russian peasant married the daughter I would have wanted to marry myself. It was interesting to see the comments of modern Hasidic Jews watching the movie for the first time. I read some of the comments here that talked of the flaws of the movie, but any flaws aside, the movie installed a positive fascination in me for Orthodox Judaism in general and Hasidic Judaism in particular. I sometimes watch scholarly lectures on Jewish history by Orthodox Jewish scholars and lectures on the Pirkei Avot by Hasidic Rabbis, and that's how I came across this video.

The movie is not intended to be a documentary and keep in mind that these men are comparing the Hasidic culture of today in The United States with a theatrical production of the essence of the way things were a hundred ago in pre-Soviet Russia. That’s a very big difference even for Hasidic culture.

Interesting to see Hasidic Jews’ reactions, but just because a movie has Jews in it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s about being Jewish. It’s art, and art is free to be interpreted. I see this as a movie about an older generation having to come to terms with the younger generation wanting to break free and live life their own way. A father who is forced to confront the evolving needs and desires of his children. It’s as relevant today as it was in the 60’s as it was for the turn-of-the-century characters in the musical. I could watch it any day of the week. And yes, I’m a father of girls. ;)

I love this. It is misleading to say it's about Hasidic Jews (that was in the email), except for the dancing guys at the wedding scene. But it's great to see real Hasidim comment. Personally, I dislike "Fiddler" because it distorts the original stories. Created in the early 1960s, it's more about what assimilating Jews of that era wanted to see on Broadway.... I agree with the two guys in the video -- they did make a better (more authentic) song! Thanks, +Jew in the City.

+Historian212 It was a story based on a story. There still were a lot of people in New York at that time who remembered life in the actual shtetls. They weren't virulently opposed to the musical, from what I know of it. How many people would even know of Fiddler at all now if it was authentic to the actual story? And is that good or bad?

The song Tradition is half satire and half truth.
This movie is about what some if not most of our elders went through.
My grandmother could not watch this movie, we watched it as a family when I was a child and she burst into tears when it was the wedding scene, and stopped watching when the pogrom started.
For those of us who were near to that generation... who sees what an 80 year old grandmother looks like when she is taken back to her childhood that she was robbed of it becomes real. The movie is a musical and plays into now stereotypes, but at the time it was just different. My family was reflected on the screen, it is a generalization of us.
I'll always have a soft spot for it.

The original Tevye The Milkman b&w movie is a very somber treatment of the one daughter's apostasy by a forbidden marriage and a bleak ending as the family embarks on a lonely and bitter exile from the home village. No consolation. No reconciliation.
Fiddler On The Roof, on the other hand, is absolutely ablaze with music and optimism and humor by comparison. It's cheery and romanticizes to the point of what is called being Disney-fied.

    Interesting video.
I've seen Fiddler many times - most recently with Topol on stage. He portrayed Tevye in the film.
Not art imitating life, rather an adaptation of Sholom Aleichem's book, Tevye the Milkman (which I read in Hebrew, translated from its original Yiddish - don't ask! :) ) Its drama, political, historical, not entirely accurate musical...
I like the play and film, however, many parts made me uncomfortable - such as mixed dancing at the wedding, and they ask the rabbi, who says 'Its not exactly forbidden...' Guess instead of Anatevka, the village was Chelm?!
And the theme is about moving away from Yiddishkeit... The song 'Chavalah' is heartbreaking...
My bubbe was from Russia, A"H, and she told me about her first hand experiences as a child with pogroms and what shtetl life was like...
Barring having access to a primary source, if one wants to know about life in the shtetl or the many chassidm (my family, btw, are Litvish!) there are sooo many books. Also some films from between the two world wars.

    "I don't think that's a realistic picture of Hassidem."
"That movie's not about Hassidem at all."
Yeah, it's about early 19th century Ashkenazi, which has some commonalities to modern Hassidem, but it isn't the same culture or tradition. The movie literally is about that culture changing ad giving way to new things. It should be no surprise that even very traditional Jewish societies today are still markedly different from what is depicted there. That's the whole point.

Who said Fiddler was about Khasidim? And of course It's not an accurate depiction of modern day. It's a depiction of olden day Jews living in Russia. And the main point is not about Khasidim

Just a comment. Please correct me if I am wrong. One question was "Why are the men's hair so long?" My guess is that since this takes place somewhere between 1900 and 1905 (thats what I heard anyways) there were no barber shops or what ever razors to get the job done. This is an opinion. If someone else has different information let me know. :D

Charlie Moskowitz the people in the movie were actors not ultra religious Jews, so why would they have short hair?

IF you want to know about Norwegian life the movie for you is Pipi Longstockings. That was a set they somehow played over and over in Los Angeles.

I don't think I watch any movie or play as a means to see/hear the final say on any one culture. I guess one has to be a movie lover to know that it only offers one slice of life with one writer's (or writers) and one director's and one choreographer's (heck, too many to name) interpretations. These men could probably come up with a more authentic representation of their religion, but would it be watched by millions around the world? It's ART. To me, no movie actually captures the 1960's fully, but then again these movies are from a singular artist's point of view.
