Always loved the visual gag of how his weapon looks like an alien ray gun but it fires like a machine, complete with bullet casings flying out of the gun
An Phan it's interesting to me how game prices have stayed relatively the same despite inflation...until the last gen consoles as well stayed around $299~$399 despite inflation....think...you paid maybe about $50 or $60 for an NES game, an SNES game, an N64 game, a Ps1 game, a PS2 game, a an XBOX 360 game a PS4 game...you get my drift...weird huh?
That's the same memories I had when I was a kid.. Saving up what little money I earned, missing my school bus home, and hikeing 40mins. to the local game shop to buy my favorite games.. Then, a hour walk home because I missed my bus home.😆👍 Oh, the nostalgia! I really couldn't wait to get home and play that new cool game! At least I got some extra exercise out of it!😁
My friend and I rented one of the earthworm games. We got stuck and unsure of where to go. My friend got online, emailed the developer. Within 20 minutes they responded to us telling us what to do next. It was a fantastic experience. Circa 1996.
I remember seeing a Kids WB advertisement on the Willy Wonka VHS tape and it included Earthworm Jim. So for the longest time I thought Earthworm Jim was a Warner Bros creation until I learned it was a video game first😂
Earthworm Jim 1 is one of, if not, my favourite game of all time. I think a lot of it comes down to the sprite work and the creative cast/environments. It's just so well animated. A lot of people complain about the glass submarine (I had a friend who could never do it) but it wasn't that bad at all.
Oh yeah, that one's killer. I could never pass 1 as a kid, but 2 I passed all the time. Then a few years ago I passed 1 on hardest and what an accomplishment. Finally that stinking peter puppy level was do-able. And I love that glass submarine part(s).
They were a bit difficult, at least and/or especially the 2nd/Lengthier one. The trick was learning how to reach the few extra weak recharge-stations that were hidden. It was still doable without them, of course, but that required a bigger gamble in reckless & risky pacing versus your reflexes and those obnoxiously deceptive hit-boxes. Plus, the fact that they were kinda like the mid-way point through the whole game, well, that made it slightly more difficult because it wasn't quickly & easily memorized.
When it comes to Earthworm Jim 1, the genesis does everything better though a few stages on the SNES did have backgrounds added. Earthworm Jim 2 was actually designed with the SNES in mind so the SNES version is much closer to the genesis version this time. Some may even say that the SNES version of Earthworm Jim 2 is better. The best version of earthworm Jim is the Sega CD version.
For anyone else who happens to be reading the comments for info like this: Yes, the Sega CD "Special Edition" is by far the best version of Earthworm Jim 1, as it includes a lot of additional content and secrets, as well as much higher quality music and voice clips (there was a pc version of it, but that'd be harder to play today). There's also an NTSC patch for the PAL region Earthworm Jim 2 for Playstation, which is the best version of 2 to play today, although it doesn't have as many differences to its other versions as the Sega CD version of EWJ1 has.
I only recently found your channel, and I wish I had known about it sooner. I really like how in some videos, you are straight to the point, and don't bullshit your viewers. Such as your "obscure hidden gems" video, your commentary on other hidden gems videos made me laugh, and also, I had not heard of the majority of the games featured there, which was refreshing. I really like this video too, I could never get very far in the Earthworm Jim games, most of the time it was because I would just become frustrated in trying to figure out where to go next or what to do, but I always find myself returning to them and trying again and again. Thanks for the videos, and I hope to see many more in the future.
Also yes, Earthworm Jim 1 was primarily made for the Mega Drive first. Makes sense as well junce Shiny Entertainment came from the Virgin team who made Aladdin on MD & Cool Spot.
Hey I just wanted to thank you so much for all of the effort you put into making these videos, I always watch your videos as soon as they come out and look forward to them, Thank you Mr.Snesdrunk
I'm always kind of amazed that Everytime these games get mentioned no one remembers the cartoon that aired on televisions at the time. I was a fan of the cartoon before the games (although the reality of it was that the cartoon was made in order to sell the game, which it did). There's also another masterpiece by shiny entertainment that I loved growing up but nearly no one played as well and that is Wild 9, a highly inventive PS1 platformer with the same kind of humor, music and creativity that the EWJ games had. It was one of my favorites growing up. Also, a small piece of trivia, Shiny Entertainment was founded in part by members of the Virgin Interactive gamedev studio that worked on Aladdin which is probably the reason the Genesis version is a bit better and the artwork and animation is SO on point. Great video as always SNESdrunk, you should do a video on 16-bit run n gun games sometime.
drubio A lot of us still love Earthworm Jim. Too sad the kickstarter campaign for a new Boogerman didn't raise much money to do anything with it, Earthworm Jim was gonna be playable again after all these years... We can only hope =P

You really captured the feel of both games in a short video. Nice job. Ps, love Jameson, used to live in the old distillery in Dublin for 2 years, playing Snes games with my mates. Haha, good times.
It really blows my mind that a Sega version of a game has better sound than the SNES game. The Sega version also has an extra level. This has to be deliberate. Conspiracy!!!
The SNES version sounds better when it's connected to a stereo system. Old tv's were usually mono so they were missing a lot of the intended sound effects.
Not really lol, it was initially released as a Genesis exclusive. And later *ported* to the Snes (THE FIRST game anyway). As a result, horizontal screen resolution had to be reduced as 4:47 and on-wards clearly displays...and the Genesis in the hands of a *capable composer* , delivers a sharper, unfettered sound overall. Particularly for bass, drums and electric guitars especially. The Genesis hardware is unfairly underrated to be honest, it's actually very capable so this really shouldn't be a big deal.
ThomohtTheLocomotive the genesis version of ewj is the original so nothing was added. It was removed from the SNES version and parts of the levels were missing on the SNES. Ewj on genesis just did everything better than the SNES version. They fixed most of these issues in ewj2. Then again this game was designed with the SNES in mind. In the hands of a capable developer the genesis can keep up with the SNES any day of the week. In a lot of areas it beat the hell out of the SNES.
ThomohtTheLocomotive: The real reason is simpler; Genesis ROMs were capable of holding slightly more content with the same amount of data, so this discouraged inclusion of the hidden levels on the SNES port.
I had completely forgotten about that blind salamander level! That stage made me feel really weird as a kid, like I was looking at something I wasn't supposed to. Also, that puppy saving bit fucked me up. You know what happens when you miss?
Since you've talked about the music, the CD-quality soundtracks of EWJ1 on Sega CD/MS-DOS and EWJ2 on PS1/Sega Saturn aren't that bad, either. Good video btw.
Both versions of both games are absolutely worth playing today, they are timeless! The Genesis versions are superior in many ways though. Our house had a SEGA so I'm glad I got the experience, but its a double edged sword because I missed out on so many SNES classics until I got a little older. No allegiances, love em both!
I had the cartridge when i was a kid and i just replayed this one this last weekend and a lot of nostalgia came out of it specially the puppy bonus stage me and my friends running with anger don't being able to pass the levels.
what is also great about EWJ is that it the sprites were hand drawn like aladdin. you can watch old behind the scenes videos on youtube which are great.
It also shows more feathers when killing a bird and more bones from killing a dog. It also shows dirt being kicked up by earthworm Jon when he runs, just like in the Genesis version
You forgot one MONUMENTAL thing about EJ2: those two cows between stages! Man, as a kid, they cracked me up every single time! But I mean... Why? Why cows?! Hahahahaha!
mcbrotherhill Video games were much cheaper to make in 80s/90s, companies could afford to take risks. If your game doesn’t sell on concept alone nowadays you’re pretty much guaranteed to go out of business unless you’re an established name.
gaaaa, that submersible level! got in serious trouble with the extended family we visited at Christmas because I was swearing way to much trying to beat that bit.
If you want my opinion, the first "Earthworm Jim" game is best played on the Sega Genesis due to it being more complete (and the fact that it also came out sometime before the SNES version), but "Earthworm Jim 2" is definitely bested played on the SNES despite both versions having the exact same features as one another on the 16-bit consoles.
Earthworm Jim 1 and 2 were so damn good. I managed to get both copies for my snes collection for under 100 bucks. A definite must own for anyone who has been collecting retro snes games.
my childhood game,i used to play earthworm jim 2 but never beat it i remember stuck in the trampoline the puppy level so hard, when you say this hard,i could feel how hard you mean by it, but that's what makes it memorable.:)
The first game is way harder than the second game. Don't get me wrong the second game is quite challenging, but I recall after getting through the first game for the first time ever because I actually started out playing the second game back in the 90s on the SNES, the first game I downloaded to my Wii and that was such a hard game to get through all the way to the end but I've beaten it, but when I actually played the second game which was my first time playing it in like 15 years at that point I actually managed to make it to the final level on my very first playthrough which goes to show how much easier the second game is than the first . I would love to see some new earthworm Jim games though because they are awesome. I remember a pretty interesting one on the game boy color where you have to like collect a certain number of coins and really massive levels to get to the next stage and it actually was quite fun and like the previous earthworm Jim games it was also quite challenging. plus I will always stand by what I am saying here when I say that I think earthworm Jim would be an amazing fighter in Super smash bros. Considering there isn't demand for earthworm Jim anymore, I don't think that's ever going to happen but damn would it be awesome
I love Earthworm Jim. I have the SNES copy and the Sega CD copy, as well as the entire cartoon series on DVD (although that's not nearly as funny as I remember it being). I feel like the SNES got short changed with not having the bonus level that was on the Genesis version, but the SNES version, unsurprisingly, still has better sound effects. I tried playing the remastered version on 360 but it just didn't feel right.
I never completed either of the games :/ have the first one downloaded on my 3ds now and still play it from time to time, but cant get past the water level!
Got EWJ for Xmas the year it was out on snes which cost my parents £50.Had such a great time on it.Only ever finished the first one on snes without cheating and finished the HD EWJ on my PS3.Recently got given EWJ & EWJ2 for MD with a MD so plan to finish them both. Also l need to jump on my N64 and play the much maligned 3d EWJ.Are there many differences for EWJ2 on the MD compared to the Saturn version ?
And they followed it up nicely with MDK on PC/Mac and Playstation. If you thought Earthworm Jim was weird, go check that one out. It has some of the craziest and imaginative weapons I've ever seen in a game, e.g. "The world's most interesting bomb". Good times!
They play a bit better on MD due to the higher resolution, but you need a hack to be able to change weapons on the fly in EWJ2 on MD. The MCD version of 1 has one more evel, one or two new paths in previous levels and a redbook soundtrack.
I think it's worth pointing out that the first game was originally intended to be Genesis exclusive, which is why the music in the Genesis version sounds better: it was made specifically for the Genesis' sound chip.
People say the music is better in the Genesis version of Earthworm Jim......thats not universally true, everyone always uses the first level theme as their example and yeah the genesis sound chip is better suited for that song, but if you compare the stage theme for level 2 "What the Heck" its more operatic organ music is WAAAY better on the SNES. It's worth going through both OST's and deciding which one you like more, because the games varied design means variety in music and each system better suits some songs more then others.
I remember when my cousin rented earthworm jim 2 from blockbuster on snes back when i was a kid. The gameplay, graphics and soundtrack blew me away. Was and still is one of my favorite snes games. Its much better on snes. The first one is better on genesis. Edit: he kept the game so long, open blockbuster door, threw the game inside and took off
For me, the best console to play the first Earthworm Jim on is that not the Super Nintendo or even the Sega Genesis; it’s the Sega CD. The game looks and controls just as well as the Geneiss counterpart, but not only is there a password system when you beat a level; there’s an extra bonus stage, added animation sprites and, best of all, the soundtrack gets a complete overhaul and it sounds really fantastic. To me, Earthworm Jim on the Sega CD is the definitive version.
I thought you were going to mention that it was created by the same team that made Aladdin from Virgin for the Sega Genesis. I remember in the mid 90s I found the stage select code that had Shiny company phone number and I would crank call them.
I've always heard these are great games. I'm fairly certain I haven't been able to beat more than one or two stages between them in the past two decades, though.
Shit was different back in the day. When modern people say "the game was hard" you and you were like... Fuck... Man... I thought that was normal back then.
ikr kid's these day's cannot handle a hard game like this,i remember playing this and( if i could remember correctly) no continues, and back then i didn't even know the password system and end up playing it over and over again, you dead, back to square one but i don't know how i keep going and never bored XD
Had this first on Genesis, but later rented the SNES version. I found the control far more forgiving on the SNES one, as some of the hook swinging sections, notably in What The Heck had awful hit detection with the whip. I did later play special edition on the Sega CD with no problems regarding whip timing, though, and it's my favorite version. The second game, while hilarious, felt like it tried too many gimmicks for levels, which was a letdown given how many weapons the game boasted.
Always loved the visual gag of how his weapon looks like an alien ray gun but it fires like a machine, complete with bullet casings flying out of the gun
Earthworm jim was the first game I bought as a kid. Saved up allowance and walked 45 mins to toyrus
Do you remember how much you paid?
SNES drunk I member! I member Earthworm Jim 2 was 52~62 USD at ToysRUs in Texas

Wow. I never truly appreciated how good the animations and graphics are until now. They've aged truly well.
Fun Fact: The T.V. show Earthworm Jim WAS in fact a Warner Bros cartoon in the mid-90s on KidsWB!
Should have been a DC Comics crossover. He'd fit right in in an episode of Superman TAS IMO.
I don’t remember that at all
It was a great cartoon and Peter puppy hates haggis!
I remember seeing a Kids WB advertisement on the Willy Wonka VHS tape and it included Earthworm Jim. So for the longest time I thought Earthworm Jim was a Warner Bros creation until I learned it was a video game first😂

Earthworm Jim is one of the few 90s platformers that deserves a comeback

Yeah your right Wild 9 it's great it is an underrated game that Nobody really talks about
They also made MDK but no one seems to remember those...
Despite its flaws, Earthworm Jim 2 is the one I look back on with the strongest memories out of the trilogy.
It feels very experimental, most obviously with the artstyle that mixes hand drawn cartoony sprites with pre-rendered 3D assets and pseudo-3D parallax effects, but also with the gameplay - it switches things up almost every level (for better or for worse), and you can tell that the developers had a ton of ideas they wanted to try out. Earthworm Jim's random, wacky world was the perfect vessel for all those ideas, and it makes for a somewhat surreal yet enjoyable experience!
This Game is still a awesome masterpiece i love this crazy game! 😝

The SNES version sounds better when it's connected to a stereo system. Old tv's were usually mono so they were missing a lot of the intended sound effects.

One correction - the SNES version is a port, initially both games were developed for Genesis, and then ported to almost every system imaginable
Gotta love that Genesis sound chip. So crunchy.
earthworm Jim is an awesome game and had its own TV show
Fun fact: Earthworm Jim showed up in the PC version of Battle Arena Toshindin of all places.
Isn't he actually whipping with his entire body?
chuckobscure Yes
When a problem comes along, Earthworm Jim it.
The suit is using Jim as a whip.
the underwater Level from Earthworm Jim remind me of the underwater Level from Crash Bandicoot Warp
those graphics have aged well.. it looks better than I remember
Everything about this game became timeless, the music, the game play and the ideas. So ahead of its time.
Too difficult for its own good , not worth it
Since you've talked about the music, the CD-quality soundtracks of EWJ1 on Sega CD/MS-DOS and EWJ2 on PS1/Sega Saturn aren't that bad, either. Good video btw.

One of my favourite single Player SNES Games. Earthworm Jim is so crazy & funny....!🤪
Very fond memories of both these games my little cousin had the 1st and i had to have the 2nd countless childhood hrs spent beating them
what is also great about EWJ is that it the sprites were hand drawn like aladdin. you can watch old behind the scenes videos on youtube which are great.

-Earthworm Jim, as voiced by Dan Castelenetta
Are they worth playing today? Yes. They're simple 2D platformers with great use of humor for all ages.
Wouldn't say "simple" is the best word to describe the EWJ series
Simple to play, but VERY hard to beat.
the quiz segment in 2 definitely has things that aren't for all ages
Dunno if people is aware of this, but the japanese version of earthworm jim 1 has no loading times when starting a level or during transitions
It also shows more feathers when killing a bird and more bones from killing a dog. It also shows dirt being kicked up by earthworm Jon when he runs, just like in the Genesis version

Straight facts!! Earthworm Jim need a new game in 2d retro style like in the 90s
Literally every game wanted to do that, so you just had all these incredible games and each one had unique, amazing ideas.

I loved this game, got e-worm jim on the pc when i was like 8-9 years old and i played it day after day
I heart the animation, backgrounds and music in these games (pacifically on the Genesis).
These games had a cartoon show in the 90s where Jim was voiced by Homer Simpson

And they followed it up nicely with MDK on PC/Mac and Playstation. If you thought Earthworm Jim was weird, go check that one out. It has some of the craziest and imaginative weapons I've ever seen in a game, e.g. "The world's most interesting bomb". Good times!
Prior to discovering the games I watched the cartoons a lot as a kid, so I'll play these anytime soon.
proud to say i beat them both when i was a kid. great fun games and great review.
I remember getting this for PC back in the day and somehow managing keyboard controls
This Chanel is great! Glad I found it
I always thought it was kind of funny how his ray gun is more like a micro Uzi.
I love the trivia section. What color is Jim's red gun?
They play a bit better on MD due to the higher resolution, but you need a hack to be able to change weapons on the fly in EWJ2 on MD. The MCD version of 1 has one more evel, one or two new paths in previous levels and a redbook soundtrack.
I think it's worth pointing out that the first game was originally intended to be Genesis exclusive, which is why the music in the Genesis version sounds better: it was made specifically for the Genesis' sound chip.
Wow bro I remember this game so clear and it was really good and just crazy looking.
my first game on genesis. love, live and will die for it
BTW I've always been in the "It's weird for the sake of being weird" camp, and I usually love weird.
Edit: he kept the game so long, open blockbuster door, threw the game inside and took off
Loved the first one growing up with the Genesis. Didn't they also release a remastered version of these games on the PS3?
Earthworm Jim 2’s SNES port is so good that I’m genuinely confused, like, what version do I buy?!
The PS1 version (I live in Europe)
Or the SNES?
I'm liking the videos and your comical satire. Please do GunStar Heroes
The SNES version lacks 'Intestinal Distress' for some odd reason. And was distributed by Virgin Games (The PC version was distributed by Activision).
Man, I love that Genesis sound
Dude this was a very hard game and great upload hidden gem of a game
I thought you were going to mention that it was created by the same team that made Aladdin from Virgin for the Sega Genesis.
I remember in the mid 90s I found the stage select code that had Shiny company phone number and I would crank call them.
I still play the earthworm Jim games. I wish they would make more
I had both on the Genesis when I was a kid, and I played both to death. Love Earthworm Jim ✌❤🐄
I always loved how there are no projectiles coming out of the gun when i shoots.
I've always heard these are great games. I'm fairly certain I haven't been able to beat more than one or two stages between them in the past two decades, though.
I love earthworm jim, I have both snes and genesis versions of 1 & 2
Shit was different back in the day. When modern people say "the game was hard" you and you were like... Fuck... Man... I thought that was normal back then.
ikr kid's these day's cannot handle a hard game like this,i remember playing this and( if i could remember correctly) no continues, and back then i didn't even know the password system and end up playing it over and over again, you dead, back to square one but i don't know how i keep going and never bored XD
thats videogame art from the 90ies !! in 95, spend a lot of time with this game...great animations/grafix, but fukkin difficult !
I loved this game and Boogerman! The graphics were awesome! It looked the cartoons
Was I the only one who remembers watching the Earthworm Jim cartoon that aired on Fox Kids before I ever knew that there was a video game later on?
This channel rules! SNES goodness for life!
One of the best 16-bit game series ever made.
He doesn’t really use his head to whip enemies; he telekinetically makes his Super Suit use his entire body as a whip
Earthworm Jim had a animated series back in the 90's
I miss EarthWorm Jim. He should be on Smash Ultimate.
Same with IckyBod Clay from Clayfighter
He doesn’t use a sword, so there’s very little chance he’ll be DLC
I've completed both games in SNES when I was a kid. Both were great games, but I prefer the first one.
the first one blew my mind what a game man
Absolutely and I have the original on my xbox one now.
Difficult is right. But still, these are two of my all-time favorite SNES games.
Who remembers playing 7ups Spot game and Noid from Domino's ?
Had this first on Genesis, but later rented the SNES version. I found the control far more forgiving on the SNES one, as some of the hook swinging sections, notably in What The Heck had awful hit detection with the whip. I did later play special edition on the Sega CD with no problems regarding whip timing, though, and it's my favorite version.
The second game, while hilarious, felt like it tried too many gimmicks for levels, which was a letdown given how many weapons the game boasted.
Creative and Brilliant series. All criticism is forgiven to me because they cannot be described as generic.
