the biggest problem you have in groups when trying to rank up is that you playing 10 percent better and everyone playing at the level of their respective ranks means everyone ranks up by 2 percent resulting in your friends being slightly boosted you being a "smurf". this doesnt happen solo becouse each time you win youre matched into better lobbies until you reach your next plateau. each and everyone of your friends would need to improve by the exact same percentage for you to rank up to the rank you should natively play at.

I think the game should be built for the more social side of things, but the devs never prioritized this. Big reason I quit the game - you end up ranking up to a point where you just can't have fun anymore. The idea behind wide groups is a step in the right direction imo, if implemented properly.

I find it's the opposite. I can focus on myself in the stack because I understand we aren't in utter disagreement/suspicion. As backline support in my stacks, I tend to see and note my friends "problem" behavior and adjust myself to it and address verbally it if it's particularly egregious (like using a bronze playstyle in plat games).
Out of the stack, I have to worry about teammates taking a nosedive mindset to the social aspect of the game. Defeatists, throwers, and flamers cannot exist in the stack. But they are very much in the solo queue.

When I've solo queued, I've found I'm more critical of myself, and I micromanage my plays to make sure I contribute every fight meaningfully. When I stack with just a duo, im wayyy more focused on them, making sure she's healed/safe/peeled for, so much so I'm much more willing to forget about my randoms so I try to stay out of comp when playing with friends

One of the randoms on their team messed up ONCE and they proceeded to bully and blame everything single mess on that one player. Adding on to what spilo said at the end, something I noticed in plat as a Winston player is that when I duo or trio queue with my friends who play support, they know how to play with a dive tank pretty well because we play a lot. When I’m with full randoms I notice that the supports can struggle a lot more when I dive and leave them alone.

Not sure how much it applies to Overwatch, but in Apex if you duo queue you are pretty much guaranteed to have to carry the solo player
Whereas if you're already a competent solo player, then there's a higher chance that the duo will be two competent players expecting to have to pull more weight, giving you a stronger team overall

Maybe the hottest take I have - the only way stacking is worth is in case you're playing with smurfs/alt accounts.
If your goal is to rank up, you must believe that you don't belong in your rank to get above 50% wr.
If you stack, chances are your friend belongs in his rank, and you can only carry him so far before he starts dragging the winrate down to 50%.
The only exception is if you believe your duo is also deserving of a higher rank, which has much lower probability (that both of you do).
Another hot-take - if you did all your rank up in groups - you are either boosting or boosted.

I played with a group for the first time as a ball and Ana main. And whilst both of these characters are usually quite stressful, I was almost AUTO PILOTING whilst I was communicating with my group members. It felt like the stress of overwatch was being buffered by the knowledge that the people have my best interest at heart.
Sometimes when I play solo and get teammates that flame or I myself am not working very well with the team because of skill issues, it feels like I'm playing a 1v9. That's not to mention the fact that on tank you're more likely to get reported when solo qeueing and you're susceptible to the rare albeit annoying leavers, AFK players misguided.
People always talk about the importance of comming for ranking up. But if your teammates are selfish and stressed out, they will not wanna hear what you got to say. :(

I agree with "playing with slightly better players than you" is the best. I like when we talk strategies, when enemy dps is "scary" and outplay me and I try my best to survive and still feel impactful even though outpressured, etc. If I end up in too good lobby it often becomes a steamroll loss. If I end up in a team where I need to do much better than normally - then I can learn how to deal with players that will make less stupid mistakes (and of course I will be punished for stupid mistakes and will try to not do them after dying 2-3 times from my own stupidity)

this is comforting to me as someone who is new to the game and unable to stack fearing that what was holding me back. what i have noticed is there is a natural skill evolution to each rank. that while sounds odd but sometimes adopting playstyles ahead of time. via videos etc. don't translate to a lower rank hero specific wise. so getting used to playing in a stack at higher ranks then coming back down to rank up a different role. does not go so well. so like the support positioning and play may not work as well in bronze, your still doing everything correct just the team isn't playing the same and comparatively out of position to be of better value. if threat makes sense

Solo queuing definitely makes you a better player. In solo q you really have to rely on your own skills a lot more and adapt to your team. Solo q doesn’t even feel like a team game, it feels like it’s a free for all but with two opposing teams. When I duo the game feels easier and I win a lot more. This is probably because I use comms when I duo and I know the play style of my teammate(I’m tank and he’s dps). When I solo q it feels like when I die my whole team dies right after, or everything is just dysfunctional. This is especially true for rank Gold and below. Once u hit plat you’re able to rely on teammates more, but anything below Gold is chaotic and a toss up to win. For me it was harder to get outta gold then it was to get out of plat.

Grouping - Used to make the games sweatier --raising the SR of the lobby. From my experience --it never really did what it said on the tin and matched like to like, i.e duo against duo.
I reconmended it to players of the same rank looking to move up - just to get them used to playing in lobbies a teir or 2 above -- they would derank, learn - solo back up quickly --that was the cycle.
Its something I really dislike about MMR matchmakers -if its doing its job, you never get exposure to better players and you only get better by playing better opponents.

Solo Q is 100% the way to go to rank up and improve. And at least in my case I expect less when I play with randoms so I play safer, when I'm with friends they enable the hell out of me, so I make poor decisions. @fqqno4886 not at all, it's a fun game people just like to exaggerate on the solo Q stuff. Fun is all about your brains health anyways. It's like some people drink "southern style" sweet tea and still say it's not sweet enough. "If it doesn't give me diabetes it's not good enough". Overwatch is a great game but some people have crazy unrealistic standards. Nothing is perfect that is life. It's all about your perspective. If you view everything as less than instead of more than you'll have a miserable life. Life is what you chew on.

We really went from “most team based fps” to “you shouldn’t play with too many friends, also you can get nuked just for using chat”. This game lost any sense of identity it had.

Why is Overwatch so different from how you would practice for a team based sport like Basketball or Football? Is it because the disparity of the potential for a human body performance is far lower than the disparity of potential of skill in Overwatch?

Been playing since the 2016 release and I love solo-queuing, it teaches another fundamental skill to climbing ranked which is adapting to your team. For context I’m GM in all roles.
Last night I was playing a support game on midtown attack and I noticed my team was constantly dying to Widow/Sojourn. We had a Roadhog/Widow/Genji/Ana and I was playing Kiriko. I was in the mindset of trying to suzu my Hog when he got purpled, but spoiler alert he never pushed far enough out the choke to even warrant one getting thrown his way. So it got down to the last minute, we had used all our ults to no success so I decided to swap and deal with these damn DPS myself.
It was close, but I swapped to Moira, flanked, found Widow alone to 1v1, AD spammed, killed her, then helped kill the rest of her team and we capped. Pushed all the way to the end with no issues, because I was able to adapt to my team struggling and getting one shot. Even tho my stats didn’t show it, the pressure I put on the enemy DPS allowed my team to shine. Having a broad hero base is part of that adaptability. But at the same time OW2 isn’t everybody’s only game they play, so they can only learn so many heroes.

    Loophole: Don't play comp 😅

  • @anyotherbusiness6210

solo q is inconsistent with teammates, teamcomps and amount of teamwork in each game. inconsistent practice is inherently bad practice and leads to reinforcing bad habits like playing overly defensive/passive/poking too much. practicing in solo q will make you better in solo q NOT overall as a player and 5 stacking will forever be the best practice as overwatch is a team game and 5 stacking focuses on the most teamwork required of all forms of playing the game.

My only issue with this ideology is when I’m spending hours practicing to improve I wanna see it translated to results I.e ranking up or winning in general. It’s quite hard to do that if someone is in my competitive lobby practicing their engagement timing with reaper when he should be melting that roadhog yesterday. In my humble opinion we should normalize practicing specific parts of your game in unranked and using comp VOD reviews to learn what tendencies to work on in unranked. Idk just food for thought.
