the positive stereotypes being negative thing is true, like if people assume something positive about you at first glance and you turn out not to be that way, they're gonna be disappointed in you for that even though they didn't have the same expectation of others
this hits pretty close bc as a rly young kid i was a "gifted" kid bc of my ADHD and unsurprisingly ended up jaded, stressed and i dissociate all the time to a point i don't even live here
1000000% agree. im a black person who doesn’t fit into the stereotype of “loud sassy black girl” but its what people expect me to be like by just looking at me. then when i don’t fit into the expectations im suddenly whitewashed. and more than 70% of the time it comes from other black ppl. hell im not even a girl 😭😭
The amount of times I'm assumed as "white" when I disagree with someone (A kpop fan trying to invalidate my identity for my opinion that no one should be using the n-slur) 💀
When I was in 6th grade my classmate assumed that I'm Chinese and I started to question if my southeast Asain ethnicity even existed 💀 I was contemplating if I should just pretend to be Chinese or not
I feel like a lot of people do tend to embrace neutral or positive overgeneralizations or stereotypes about themselves and others and the problem comes when they present unreasonable expectations (and tie into survivorship bias and all that) or just outright dehumanize people.
god the infantilization is such a fcking problem even when people thought that it was good, it was just creepy and weird luckily a lot of the time it doesn’t happen to me because of the types of people I surround myself with but when it does…yeah☠️
Stereotypes sadly will never not exsist. It's a huge part of human psychology and a form of classification folks use to generally wrap up larger groups in their own minds. While its not right, it happens every day, and will continue despite all efforts. The only thing a person can do is just be aware of ones they prioritize as a part of their own personal bias. Examples being in politics and the assorted stereotype an individual side has for its aposing side. Or if your in the middle what each side assumes of the other. Tldr: Think for yourself and don't assume. People might surprise you then in their uniqueness.
(rant) I really don’t like people who stereotype other people and staple assumptions to people they don’t even know. I’ve had people staple assumptions to me that I really don’t like, I’ve literally been told that straight people offend me because I’m queer. (Which they don’t, it depends on who the person is and how they treat others to get me to not like them.) It really sucks just because people that aren’t “of the norm” get treated differently and the stereotypes and assumptions that are made up by loud people stick and get seen as fact. Anyway, I really like your videos, I think you’re really cool and underrated.
I think an understated aspect in staryotypes is how people (especially more nowadays it seems) put themselves into the staryotype boxes more. It has physiological reasoning too, humans want to be apart of somthing or in groups so they start reflecting the group. For better or worse. Intentional or most often not. But yeah it’s annoying. Aside from algorithm giving me staryotyped “relatable” content, I find it occurring most with jokes. Witch aren’t made with good faith 99% of the times, with mostly inaccuracies. :/
as an older sister i HATE how online ppl r alwasy like "older sister more mature" it makes me feel sick to my stomach because i know my younger sisters the one who will be mature and is now- great video(ALSO NOT ALL AMERICANS R STUPID IM TAKING EXTRA TIEM OUT OF MY DAY TO LEARN STUFF STUPID AMERICAN TEACHERAS WONT TEACH US!!)
I'm the youngest in my family and I greatly dislike that trope as well, and I also just hate how much younger siblings are infantilized by both the media and our own families... Drives me bonkers!
