This was the first video I watched on my curly girl journey. It’s been 7 months now and I have never been happier with my hair! My crazy damaged hair is now beautiful wavy-curly 2c/3a hair. Thank you so much Alyson, this video truly changed my life.
You're seriously making me cry this morning! I'm so so so so so so so so so excited to hear that. Beyond happy for you and your now-beautiful locks. :)
Just starting my curly hair journey at 46.5 yrs old 😱🎉🎉🎉. Have watched and enjoyed several of your videos. Am soaking up (pun intended), lots of information. I am NOT prepared for this shocking situation! Shopping is happening and videos like this are a great help!
The 10 Commandments for wavy girls: 1. Don't use sulfates or silicones. Sulfates dry out your hair. Silicones build up. 2. Thou shalt squish to condish. 3. Thou shalt embrace a good crunchy cast. Leave it in for as long as you can before scrunching it out. 4. Stop lusting after curly hair. Embrace your own waves/curls. 5. Thou shalt have a nighttime plan. Protect your wash day efforts. 6. Lower thy expectations for the days after wash-day. 7. For a polished look - wear make-up. 8. Thou shalt not panic over the size of thy hairball. 9. Thou shalt fluff thy hair for volume - shake those roots! 10. Thou shalt embrace functional frizz - some frizz gives you volume.
I spritz my hair with water with a bit of gel diluted in it on day 2 and 3 and scrunch it for a bit. Some days it looks even better than day 1. You're welcome.
FINALLY!!! There are so many RUclipsrs with curly hair, and I have been searching far & wide for a wavy girl expert, because as you said our routines & tactics are different. Thank you so much for making this video
This is so helpful for us wavies. We all lust for hair that is curlier, but its just not going to happen. So for someone to get in my face and tell me to accept my waves--😉 that is something that we all need to hear!! Great advise.
Hah! Well thank you for not hating on me for that one. I thought I was going to get a ton of grief for this video (actually was strongly considering ditching the whole thing), but it's been surprisingly well-received. Love your waves! They're gorgeous!!!

I'm ALSO between 2a and 2b and Irish :D Didn't know that was a thing. I loved this video, even though the "stop lusting after curly curls" was a hard pill to swallow ;)
I am new to curly girl, having assumed I had straight hair all my life. I never liked wearing my hair straight, so I would use rollers, curling irons, etc to get more volume and curl. When I stumbled upon a video stating "where there's frizz, there's curl, I started thinking that maybe I may not really have straight hair after all - yay! I do appreciate what you said about being realistic about our expectations. I would love nothing more than to have lovely ringlets of curls, but waves are what I've got - and, like you, the back of my hair doesn't want to wave in the same way as the sides. I've learned a lot from watching many of your videos and realize that wavy hair is really a bit trickier in some ways that straight or curly. The one area I continuously seem to struggle with is that once I'm finished diffusing my hair, my hair seems "stringy". Instead of nice clumps of waves/curls, I seem to have stringy strands of waves/curls. I'm always tempted to just get out a brush (which I know is "against the curly rules) - any suggestions? I've only been doing this for about a week, so perhaps my hair is still adjusting?
+Kathy Everett I completely understand! After years of straightening, I wasn't sure what was on my head, either. What has helped me get fatter clumps of waves are two things: squish to condish (basically, scrunching your soaking wet hair upside down while it's full of conditioner and water), and applying my products on wetter hair (in between soaking and damp). I also only use a wide tooth comb before squish to condish, never after. Have you watched my way-too-long full routine video? You're only one week in; you have so much to learn, but it doesn't have to be complicated. Good luck with your waves! It will get easier, the hardest part is keeping expectations in check with so many curlies out there! 😘
Same! One week in and my hair looks like bent yarn after s2c and diffusing. It was a little better when I air dried it last night but still weird and unappealing, had to put it up in a clip to leave the house.
I'm not lusting curly hair, I have been lusting after sleek straight hair for years. I would brush and my hair would get bushy, so I end up ironing my hair. I stop flat-ironing already. I've been noticing a curl on my forehead for a few years (probably gets a deep conditioning from my forehead grease) and now I suspect that my straight bushy hair is not suppose to be straight, but somewhat wavy. 🤔
Thank you for addressing the wavy hair issue. I’ve had it all my life (74 years of it) and never knew how to make it look right. So I straightened it with a hair dryer or hot brush but it never stayed for long cuz for the past 50yrs I’ve lived in humid Florida. Now I wash it, turn it upside down after air drying for a bit, use a diffuser and let it do it’s thing. I get a great cut so it just falls into place with only a little product. Btw Healium FiberFlex is outstanding for volume. Oh and this pic of me is a few years old when I straightened it. I have to update. I love watching you. Thnx again
Thank you so much for including the comment “if you have arthritis in your hands” hugs!! Most people don’t understand how hard some of these techniques are on hands that hurt - which is why I embraced my waves in the first place.
If you told us you've worked on tv I'd believe you. You could have your own show. You give a lot of useful information in an objective manner. You're also good in connecting with people. Please share your secrets. :)
Oh my goodness, thank you so much! I can't even tell you how much that means to me. I worked in corporate PR what feels like a lifetime ago, and did some PR training and also acted as company spokesperson from time to time. It was my favorite part of the job, actually. I have no secrets. Just don't be afraid to look the camera in the 'eye' and remember you're talking with your friends. Be 100% yourself, and don't apologize for it.
I love that I found someone with wavy hair. Eveyrthing you mention about wavy hair collecting more grime and needing a little cleanser from time to time is spot on. I tried "co washing" a few years ago but I was way too greasy and it didn't work out. I can't wait to try this again with a little more revision and listening to someone that has a similar hair type as myself
We have to be allowed to occasionally, right? Sometimes I watch people with very different hair type because they're just so confident and beautiful. And I understand I can't have type 3 curls, but I can appreciate the curls of other ladies.
@@sapphira31 Yup...even when I was younger and had stick straight hair I always loved the look of curly girls. And yes, I longed to have those ringlets on my head. Learning to tame my 2a-2b waves.
the makeup comment is so true and honest! the way you talked about it aswell is just so spot on, wear a bit of makeup if you want to look more polished, not to look better but to look more put together!
What? I finally understand my hair? Why is this not common knowledge? I was always confused, just because I treat my 2A hair like straight hair, brushing it dry daily, washing it almost never, thinking what a stupid shape my hair has. Pff haha. I guess I will try to treat it like a wavy hair one day to see what it looks like.
Similar! I thought it was straight but frizzy and weird. ;) Finally trying to figure out how to embrace the waves and see what it looks like once I stop killing it by heat-styling several days a week!
I hope that someday soon we will live in a culture that doesn't insist women look "polished." When that word is used to talk about women looking professional, it's really just code for "conforming to beauty standards." The effort women are expected to put into their appearance to achieve a "professional look" is staggering when compared to the effort expected of men to reach the same level of professionalism. The idea that women look objectively more professional with straight hair and makeup isn't actually objective AT ALL. It's just a subjective construct with roots in systemic racism (since naturally straight hair is so much more common for white people than black people) and the patriarchy (since women are expected to paint their faces to reach a minimum threshold for looking presentable but men are considered fine as they are). However, if that is, unfortunately, the professional environment you are in, I can see how conforming to the expectation of wearing makeup could help to offset the non-conformity of non-straight hair. It's still B.S. that ANY person would have to do that to be taken seriously or considered professional, though.
I was with you until you blamed it on systemic racism and the patriarchy 🙄. The only people to blame are our fellow women (self likely included) for playing along and trying to meet the shallow standards that have become the cultural norm.
I think it does start with systemic racism and patriarchy, but it's ourselves and our sisters that perpetuate these unrealistic beauty standards. Do most men even notice our grooming? How many times have you run out to the store without doing any makeup or hairstyling and caught the side-eye from other women? When we go out to a big party or event, do we notice much what the men are wearing? Nope. However, we put women's hair, makeup, skincare, fashion, jewelery, accessories, body hair situation all under a magnifying glass. If women stopped judging other women, these harsh beauty standards would mostly disappear.
Holly Webster I judge women on their jewelry and makeup and hair but not in. A bad way. I will compliment someone on their jewelry or hair or outfit but in the same way I would never judge them for being “undone” bc I’m a stay at home mom of three I get that too
I've been looking for videos like these! I have hair just like yours! I can only find videos with girls with curly hair and mine is wavy. I hope to love my waves someday.
Hi I'm deaf and using the closed captioning but you keep saying something about "squish chicken dish" (I know the captions might be wrong here!) after about 3 minutes in, what is this squish chicken dish thing? Thank you!
Young B well, I will henceforth say squish chicken dish. I love mistakes like this it is so silly. My son thought it was Justice Beaver when he was little, I still announce Justice Beaver whenever there is a Justin Bieber song on the radio. 😆
I was laughing my head off at your #4: "Stop lusting after (others) curly hair!" Am a newbie, embracing the CG method since a month now. These commandments are what I need right now as my hair is transitioning from the ever-straight to 2B or not to be way. ;) Thank you Alyson, you have given me hope. For someone who thought salon is the best way to maintain your hair, the CG method, products, routine and the works seem a little overwhelming. But you have simplified it and I shall heed your words carefully.
i JUST started my wavy babe journey - i really cant believe i went 25 years without even knowing how wavy/curly my hair actually is...i'm so excited to see how my hair is going to look months from now, after i've gotten away from all the heat and figure out all the ins and outs of caring for my waves!
Hey, thank you so much for the tip about wearing makeup. I just shared it, and attributed it to you, on a curly girl forum on Facebook, about how makeup can take a blah hair day and disguise it as a good hair day. This tip has been hugely popular, and so you're helping a whole bunch of curlies, who now know to come here and look for you on RUclips. Thanks!
I want to thank you for recognizing that some of us are not physically able to do all these movements with our hands/arms - girl that put joyful tears in my eyes! I’m 34, and I’ve had autoimmune arthritis since I was a kid, and doing my hair is impossible some days. Luckily, I now get away with washing once a week! Thank you for your great videos, and empathy 💙
Thanks so much for your video! I found you about a week ago and am so abscessed by your info. I have to admit that I have been watching people who have curlier and longer than I have. I’m growing out a pixie. 😫😫😫 and noticed my hair was getting wavy. I couldn’t believe my natural blonde hair was getting wavy at 67 years old. I’ve got way too many products and have gotten so confused watching so many different kinds of videos. I think I have weighed my hair down with too much moisture. And now trying to figure out which protein items to put on my hair is a new journey also. I did have a couple great hair days in the last two weeks and on my hair basically changed overnight because of a moisture problem. I’m looking forward to hearing more of your videos and trying to find people with short hair and wavy hair. Thank you for all you’re doing it’s very encouraging
I use a modified Curly Girl method on my wavey hair. It's not necessary to apply these products in the shower. I re-wet my hair a little at the sink afterwards and then apply LA Looks Gel 10 (or any good gel), a curl defining cream and a bit of Herbal Essences Tousle spray gel. I do use sulphate free products "most" of the time. Then there's the scrunching. I let it air dry, arrange with fingers and a little lifting with a comb; then I finish with hair spray. The result is amazing and only this has lasted all day.
Actually... i think you might be doing "smasters" method... it's what i did too before i found curly girl. My hair is too weighed down by the weight of water, so after it dries a little (still wet tho) I'd wet my hands & apply the products. Then I found CG and have tried a bunch of things since... but it's interesting that we kind of "develop" techniques that others also thought of, like a curly 6th sense! Also, I'm sure you've seen on your curly journey, wavies do need to clarify with sulfates occasionally! You're a natural at CG!
I have lightly wavy hair when I air dry, and I have found that on a good day, I can get that nice beachy wave that takes most people a lot of work and a curling wand to achieve (or an actual beach). I achieve it by putting in some light-weight gel, lifting the roots a bit to get some volume, and then not touching my hair again. I used to lust after curly hair. And then I realized the number of people that would kill to get my beachy waves with as little effort as I use. And I have learned to appreciate my natural hair texture.
I really appreciate your videos. All my life I've had straight hair, with the exception of the hair at the nape of my neck, which has a little wave to it. I buzzed everything off a couple of years ago and wore it like that until about 7 months ago, when I decided I wanted to grow it out. I did a lot of investigating on how to care for long hair since I didn't want it to look stringy and broken once it was long. I immediately cut out products with silicones, parabens, and sulfates and stopped using any kind of heat on my hair. Lo and behold, as it's been growing out (it's about 4 inches give or take now) I've been seeing waves and even some loose curls! I'm so excited because I've always wanted at least a wave to my hair. I've been looking up curly girl method videos and yours are so helpful - I can't wait to see what my waves will do as they grow out!
I have literally sat down and watched every single video on this channel about hair, and it is amazing!!!! I have a 2b to 3a type of hair and for years I would just brush out my hair and walk around like a little fuzz ball. Only in the recent years have I really realized that when I wash my hair or go to the beach my hair is curly. So I tried curly products, and all that did was make my hair a greasy crunchy mess. I started following some of her tips and mixed with things I knew I liked and I couldn't be happier with my hair. This is how I do it: wet hair fully shampoo using OgX Shampoo (argan oil one) only my roots condition using OgX Conditioner (argan oil one), I started by combing through my hair getting out all the knots and then I squish to condish (making sure the hair is fully wet) curl cream (lately I switch from devacurl wave maker and OgX coconut curl cream) I smooth over my whole hair (NOT combing it and mixing with water if needed) and I squish again gel using Shea Moisture anti frizz max hold gel, I do the same thing to the gel as the curl cream focusing more on the areas where I need a greater hold plop with a old cotton t-shirt for 10 to 30 min (matters on the day) if needed I apply more gel if not I skip the step diffuse using Xtava orchid diffuser (that I literally taped on to my old Conair from the early 2000s) then I scrunch out the crunch organ oil or silk therapy if I feel like my hair looks uncontrollable most of this is thanks to this channel and I'm forever thankful that I finally love my hair but I am also trying new things all the time hoped this helped or gave some people somewhere to start
So much great info for a beginner. One big thing not mentioned is to lose the brush. Wide tooth or finger comb only in the shower with hair drenched with conditioner.
I just watched a bunch of your videos and I have to tell you YOU CHANGED MY WAVY-HAIRED LIFE!! Last year I had bariatric surgery and started to lose a lot of hair... I started getting waves/curls as my grays started coming, so last year I decided to go blonde (I am naturally DARK) and, together with my weight loss (consequent hair loss) my hair always looks frizzy and dead... I came upon your videos and this morning washed with Deva Curl No Poo and conditioned with Biotera something (sorry, in the car at the car wash and forget the name)... I rinsed in cool water, loaded it with Ion leave-in and then LA Looks extreme sport gel, squishing it like mad... I plopped and left it for a good 40 min... Diffused on low with warm heat and let it cool completely before I scrunched.. MY HAIR LOOKS HEALTHY AND SO FULL OF LIFE!! The curls and waves are AMAZING!! Thank you so much! I wish I could show you my before and after pics! Keep posting videos... I'm a forever subscriber!
That video is 5 years old, but it is so helpful for me right now! Just discovered my 2A-3A waves and curles and it's both - kind of a relief and stressing at the same time.. 😂 So this video right now really calmed the sh*t out of me.. 😁 Thank you, you are amazing! Edit: Sorry for the maybe not 100% correct english, I'm german wavy gurl.. 😁
Newly wavy girl here! About a week before Thanksgiving I got a new haircut with a lot of shorter layers, and it brought out waves I never knew I had. 2B-3A is probably what I'd call it. I always thought I just had frizzy straight hair because when I was a kid, my hair was pin straight. I grew up dancing competitively, so I had hair long enough to slick back in a low ponytail. It was always so thick and heavy that I never knew my hair had any texture. Wow what a world of difference a haircut makes. now I am fully embracing the wavy/curly hair I always lusted after.
I found your videos recently and they are so enlightening and positive. I've been in denial about my hair changing over the past few years from 3A+ to a solid 2B in the winter and 2Cish in the summer. It has been DEVASTATING! I look at pictures of myself from my early 20's and am like "Where did that hair go!?" It took so much energy to accept and love my curly hair and now I have to accept this new hair texture that gets limp, stringy, and awfully tangly on the 2nd and 3rd day. I am slowly transitioning into no silicones and sulfates after a lifetime of using them. Hoping that will help with the weird stringy dreads. Thanks for your videos!
Just found your channel. Love it! Excellent advice delivered intelligently and with humor. Thank you so much for your mention of arthritic hands and scrunching difficulties. I have a disease that caused my hands to contract so it can be hard to do the squish but I do my best. It was just so great to hear someone acknowledge us otherly abled folks. I have 2b/c hair on my crown and 3b curls at my neck. Also one side is curlier than the other. Anyone else?
I love functional frizz. Wavy's are in their own category I think. I consider myself a bonafied wavy and not a curly. Wavy's have to do stuff different then curly's.
You're a breath of fresh air. Wow. I used to have curlier hair, but I swear henna made it straighter. Satin pillowcase + protect your ends with your favorite oil 💪
+Amy Smith Aww you are too kind. Thank you! Yes, henna will do that, especially if your hair is already on the coarse side. Good tips! Thanks for sharing yours. :)
Thank you, so practical and helpful and not just trying to push every different CG hair product. Thank you for telling me off about lusting after curls, I needed that!!
Your suggestion about makeup is so genius. A woman nurse/teacher of mine once suggested that I wear makeup every day when she saw how it transformed my appearance. She said it made me look more professional. I do have "beachy waves"🌊🏝 and I totally understand now what she meant back then. Thank you for telling the truth. Now that you've pointed it out, I'm going to strive to look more polished like my teacher suggested a couple years ago!
I’m so glad you mentioned about the hairballs. I do panic when I see all that hair coming out in the shower. But that makes a lot of sense! Makes me feel a lot better.
Totally agree with this. Even the make up and co wash comments. When I wear makeup my hair does stand out more in a Nicer shinier way. Also I tried co washing and it did damage my scalp and cause excess hair loss.
I’ve recently stopped blow drying my hair and I was amazed to find out that I actually have wavy hair! Now I’m in desperate need of advice on maintaining those waves 😅
About the buff: us here in SA we use old stockings to cover our hair, like stuff all our curls or waves into the piece of stocking that we have cut off. It works for some of us, not all, depending on the grade of curls. But for us 2b's we usually dampen our hair and add a bit of curl enhancer mousse or product as a night time routine before we stuff a stocking on our heads🙈
Seriously, thank you so much. Every tip i have ever followed is for 3-4 type curly hair not realizing its not the same for wavy. You have helped me so much!!!
I have always referred to my hair as a dandelion that’s gone to seed or an old paintbrush. This method has opened up a whole new world to me. Our hair types, yours and mine, are very similar, albeit mine is a whole lot grayer than yours! LOL! I thank you very much for being candid and a bit bossy! I refer to my oldest child as “Sister Sargent”. I bet you two are about the same age. Thank you again! You’ve got a new subscriber.
I can not say thank you enough! ❤️ my hair is slightly less curly than yours and for years I have been fighting it! I was always trying to style it like a curly gal would. I had no idea wavy and curly hair needed to be treated differently. I tried the squish to condish method last night and my hair life is forever changed!! I can actually wear my hair natural now! Also I had no idea that wavies need to break the cast! Whaaaaa??? So much golden nuggets of info! Thank you!!!!!
I personally use a dry shampoo every 3rd day, shampoo once a week and co wash twice a week and do a coconut oil, castor oil and olive oil mask for one whole day
Everyone’s journey is so interesting and so different! For me, day 2 post wash is my best. By then the clumps have really formed well, getting a few ringlets (2c/3a). I have a love/hate relationship with wash day. Excited because I’m always looking forward to the results but hate the time it takes to do it all!
I have been doing the CG method for 3-4 weeks now hoping my hair was just "finding " its curl patterns. Watching your video made me realize l'm a Wavey not a Curly. Thank you for this video. I really needed to hear what you had to say.
I had poker straight hair until menopause. Now I'm 2B wavy. So glad I found you! I'm trying to get this wavy head "perfect". Your videos are so helpful. Sometimes you "read my mind" and tell me answers to what I have been thinking about. Thanks for your videos!
I've lusted after curly hair for YEARS now because I genuinely did have curls as a little girl, but I've ruined since with dyes, and heat (A LOT OF HEAT). BUT I watched this video and realized I agree with a lot of what you said and aka truly realizing I have wavy hair now. Which isn't a bad thing! I love the fact that I still have some curl even with the damage 🙄 but now I have to fix my hair care routine AGAIN 😅 BUT again thank you for the tough love.
As someone with wild bushy hair my whole adult life you are spot on with the makeup. It’s very true. It does help and if you are looking for that I’d recommend a little Texas never forget lipstick and mascara commandment.
Haha the no makeup thing is so true. When I dont wear makeup it looks like I literally rolled out of bed because my hair is so wavy and hippie mermaid looking
Omg y'all have no clue how relived I was when you said that if you loose hair in the shower or when you put your finger through it your not loosing any more hair than others. I loose hair in the shower all the time and it's so annoying and I was so scared I was going bald or something anyways I'm a first time watcher and definitely will be watching again you are clear to the point and explain things very well
+Sage Srna I've constantly got little hairs falling out and tickling my arms, halfway stuck in their curl clumps. And I lose a ton in the shower. Unless you notice you're seeing more scalp than what you're used to, you have nothing to worry about. Glad this one was helpful to you!
Your hair on its worst day looks better than mine on its best! You've definitely got knowledge I need and want here. I ordered Lorraine Massey's book and a "hot head". I use a no-poo currently, but I'm definitely open to tweaking my routine, because I don't clarify or use any extra conditioner ever. I'm going by your "Bible" and we'll see what happens! Thank you for your good work here. You have a wonderful personality for these you tube videos. They hold my interest.
Lusting after curlier hair? I personally never felt this way! I always thought that my hair is straight but frizzy until I just recently discovered this method and it turns out I have almost exact hair like you in this video! And honestly I always thought that is the most beautiful hair ever, soft gorgeous smooth waves! I am so in love now with my “new” hair it’s unbelievable, and I cannot believe I always had them and didn’t know about it. I wouldn’t want them to be curly even if I could!! Wavy hair is the best! :)
#8 is so true. When I dyed my hair with henna the first time, I brushed it out and lost so much hair I started crying. A few days later the ringlets re-formed and my hair was just as thick as ever.
Loved your video! And will definitely be checking out the curly girl method. I am mid aged woman with wavy/curly hair, but I’ve worn it up for the past 15 years for professional reasons. This is no longer necessary so I am currently trying to embrace my locks worn loose and am having a horrible time. It probably also the fact that I stopped dying my hair 10 years ago. Loved your commandment about night time maintenance since I didn’t realize I should not be letting it go free. I will be subscribing and I’ll be on the look out for some graying curly girls for additional advice. You come across very well on video. Keep it up!
That was such an honest video, felt it when heard the makeup point, I recently realized this. And thank you for telling that wavy girls shouldn't do cowash because the sticky scalp was making me feel demotivated to follow this routine, and hey loved the volume trick. So thank you for all the commandments.
I feel like you have actually met me and have seen my hair! Crazy. Such good information here. Still working on trying to figure out my post-baby wavy hair. This is useful stuff.
My hair is mostly wavy on the outside but underneath my hair gets curly/coily. What do you think about brushing wavy hair? Does it cause frizz? I've heard stronger hold gel causes frizz on day 2-3. I only use a tiny little drop of argan oil. Any more than that weighs my hair down really bad. Aloe is the way to go! By the way, my mom uses sauve clarifying shampoo and it is great to get rid of product build up. (Diluted apple cider vinegar works great to clarify the hair, kills fungus and restores health to the scalp. Healthy scalp promotes hair growth.) It has to be followed up with a deep conditioner or deep condition first to help detangle in the shower. I love Maui Moisture Curl Quench + Coconut Oil Curl Milk. It smells like coconut and plumeria. It smells so good, almost edible. Please don't eat.😋 Batiste dry shampoo is saving my life. I also use Aveda and Shea Moisture. I've heard good things about "Not Your Mother's..." hair products. I like that aloe is the first ingredient in Maui Moisture and it's free of all the bad stuff (sulfates, silicones, parabens, mineral oil, gluten, synthetic dyes.) It has all the good stuff: vegan...again, don't eat it, eco-friendly, pure coconut water, and pure aloe juice. Did I mention... DON'T EAT IT!😄 I mix a little of the curl cream and warm water together in a spray bottle as a diy leave-in/detangler or to refresh curls/waves.
Thank you so much for addressing arthritic fingers. I was kinda scared and intimidated to start the curly girl method, but with the little pea sized conditioner to use with the scrunching, I think I can do it! Excited to start this journey!!
Thanks for explaining the hair balls. I had straight hair in my 20s and now turned curly in my 40s Now I understand why I'm seeing it more in My comb and tub. Thankyou!
Gee! Am I glad I found you! I'm new to trying to be a wavy girl. I think I'm 2b , but my hair is shorter than yours so I can up the curl pattern a bit with the right products. I am still experimenting with different products. I have fine, thinner hair. Use to be thick but menopause changed that. the last two years I have transitioned to my natural color in all my glorious pewter and peppers. :) Now I want to go natural with my texture. I use mostly sulfate free shampoo, but then I will use a clarifying shampoo here and there to clear out the product buildup. I co-wash here and there too, but not everyday. I switch it up because my hair prefers that. My biggest problem is that many of the products I see recommended are to heavy for my waves. I have been anti crunch...but you have made me see the light in that area. :) I will embrace the crunch cap until I have the best definition I can get. then I'll soften it with a dab of curl cream. I have found that this journey is harder and trickier than my silver transitioning. But I loved that and I'm loving this!! Subscribed!
Awww, your words make my day! I'm so glad to help and hope I can make some recommendations that work better for you. Wavies tend to be the odd in-between, so it can definitely be tricky to find the right products and styling techniques. You're moving in a fantastic direction already, alternating cowashing/low poo/clarifying as your hair needs it, so I know you've got a feel for what 'listening to your hair' really means.Let me know if I can help in any way!
I do have a question....I live in Colorado and it's fairly dry heat here so I've been working on products for here specifically. I am soon leaving for Ohio to visit family and I wonder if you can recommend a light weight product that helps with frizz in humidity?
Sure! It's pricey, but I've been amazed at how the Ouidad heat & humidity gel has helped control my frizz this summer. I don't get a ton of hold from it, but for frizz control, it can't be beat. It's a pretty thin consistency, but it's concentrated, so you don't need a lot. Nice and lightweight!
I’ve blow dried my hair since I could hold a hair dryer and last month decided to finally embrace my natural wavy hair. I just can’t get over the fact that my hair was wavy all this time and your videos are fantastically helpful for educating me in all things wavy hair ❤ I love your style of speech and the fact that you get to the point with humour included along the way. Consider me subscribed! 😃😃😃
Blow dried, used curling iron in the 70's, 80's, 90's. Body waves. I had poker straight hair until my 50's. Now, I have long, wavy hair and am learning to deal with it! (My mom and brother had beautiful wavy hair their whole lives.)
Love your waves and don’t lust for the curls was so important to hear! There are so few depictions of natural wavy hair in media (spent hours searching yesterday to show my hair dresser my desired cut with my hair texture) since so many people create them with curling irons, I always felt I just had naturally messy hair and kind of was cool with it but secretly wished for smooth curls or effortless straight hair. Not too long ago “boho waves” became a little more prevalent in stuff like magazines and I realized, hey some people see this hair texture as ‘a look’. Now that I’ve gotten into moisturizing and styling my hair a little more since I finally have an ideal of a realistically achievable level of polish, I feel much more empowered to actually like my hair for the waves they are, not as failed curls!
I love your channel! Just rewatched this video as I've been feeling pretty frustrated with my hair and needed a good reminder of what it is like dealing with wavy hair. Thanks!
It's not easy. It does make me understand why cosmetic companies formulate their products the way they do. This way is better, I think, but it is more complicated for a while, until you get the hang of it. Hair is temperamental by nature!! Hang in there, girl. We all deal with the same frustration; the key is knowing how to address is (and keeping expectations in check).
Thank you! After 10 years of straightening and curling iron abuse it's like I've damn near forgotten all my curly q meets beachy wave knowledge and desperately need some mentoring and reinforcing encouragement through this revisited journey for happy hair. 💃
Thank you so much for this video. I stumbled upon it by total accident last Friday when I was ready to chop my hair super short for I was so fed up with my long dry frizzy hair. And today, 2 days later my hair is super curly and looking much healthier!!! Yup, apparently I inherited my mother's super curly hair and didn't know it. Of course I have a lot to learn and experiment with different products, but oh my, what a difference already. So yes, thank you for changing my hair and pretty much my life!
Your hair is the same as mine! I have been trying to find a video for a while, but all I could find were tutorials for really curly hair or dead straight hair. Thank you for making this video.
New subscriber here! 💁🏻♀️ I've been reading about the curly girl method for wavy hair, but this is my first video. LOVE your advice and just you in general! 🤗 I never really had considered working with my waves. I probably have more waves than I even realize! Started looking into this because my hair has been thinning due to stress and chronic health issues. I want to baby what I have left as much as possible. I've always air dryed my hair, so I'm already headed in the right direction. So excited!!
Great video. I did the curly hair method for a year and I stopped because it was way too much work for the uninspiring mane that I got. My hair never looked amazing for more than a few hours the first day after washing and letting air dry. Air drying my hair with the method took FOREVER. Right now I just get no poo or moisturizing shampoos, and make sure to oil my hair before shampooing and after. I follow the similar principles that for skin, using humectants, water, emollients and add in moisture repellents and the Gel cast into that.
Sounds like you're still following the basic tenets to me: silicone- and sulfate-free. Even I cheat on the sulfate thing monthly. Glad you're doing what works for you. Always take pride in being true to that!
omg girl I have been letting my hair do it's thing for four months now. AND I have been freaking out about all the hair I have been loosiiingggggg omggggg.... that hair ball in the showeerrrr!!! haha freaks me out every time. Thanks for this video! you gave me back my hope hahahaha!! xxo
Oh my gosh, I just love you. I just found you today and I'm delighted. I love your sense of humor, we have the same hair, and I appreciate your advice! Thank youuuuuu
Thank you thank you thank you for this video! I am a Wavy, my hair has been thick and wavy since middle school, I just never discovered how to embrace my mermaid waves until college! You are so right: we do need slightly different rules than our Curly and Coily sisters. I did an 8-week no-poo experiment to purge my hair and scalp of excess oil since we had moved to New Orleans. My dry scalp was very angry by the end, BUT I am sooooo much less oily, now! I am still looking for a product that will keep my dry scalp under control. But yes, we do need to clarify! My buildup was so bad by the end, and NOTHING got rid of it until I used shampoo again. I tried: scalp massaging, daily brushing, water only, ACV rinse, flour (NEVER AGAIN. IT JUST MAKES A ROUX IN YOUR HAIR), and aloe vera gel. Nothing helped my scalp, and the aloe gel just stripped my hair of all the natural oils that were making my hair shafts nice and soft. I have been loving Shea Moisture products since then, but I've always wondered if they were really meant for my hair type. I have had the best success with their curling gel souffle, but my hair still separates from its clumps. I think I will try using a little more product, and put it in when my hair is soaking wet. I have a little of their matching curl cream left, I may put that on first for more moisture. I also wanted to share that I have done the scrunch-the-crunch method on my own before I knew it was a thing! Good to know I'm not alone!
A couple of my very best friends are native to New Orleans--so I'm dying at the mental image of a roux in your hair!!! LOL! I'm so sorry about your itchy scalp. Has it always been itchy? Wondering if it's a buildup issue (i clarify monthly with Suave Daily Clarifying shampoo, especially if my scalp feels the least bit itchy), an allergy to a product, or just something you've always dealt with. My friend Lindsey highly recommends this Purad'or scalp serum, which I believe is water based. Maybe it could help you? It's the first item listed in my Amazon shop: www.amazon.com/shop/reallifecurlygirl
Thanks for the recommendation, I will have to check it out! I don't recall when my dry scalp started. Maybe sometime in high school? I think it is a combo of dryness and buildup. The only time I have gotten a good clean scalp recently, was at a salon. I mentioned my scalp is quite dry, and she massaged it with some Argan oil and essential oils, and scrubbed my scalp pretty good with their moisturizing shampoo (Unite brand, low-poo). I liked the samples they gave me, of the shampoo and conditioner, but could never get the same results at home. Now, I am 2 washes into the CG method, and my scalp is feeling a lot better! Seems to be improving with each wash. I have been low/no-sulfate shampooing since purging my hair, so I think my transition won't be as bad. I think I will try using my husband's Head & Shoulders to clarify, and see how that goes. I also massaged Argan oil into my scalp a couple nights ago and left it overnight before washing the next day. Seemed to help a bit, too. So I will definitely check out that remedy you have posted! Thanks so much!
Yes makeup helps, also I believe we need to be creative and play with half updos, using decorated clips to clip some parts leaving others down and using cute and elegant headbands. Those were all the ways I used to give it a more controlled look and still show the waves or curls. I found that part on accepting your hair really important! The thing is not 2 curls are the same, unfortunately, or luckily I don't fall into any category, maybe "wavy/curly". I have had a love-hate reaction to them all the time. Some people love them, some tell me well you don't get me because your curls are so easy to handle and cute not like mine, some go for the "you are wavy why do you worry so much", or the so heard I've never seen you with straight hair it would look cute on you. Not too long ago I heard you have straight hair, because of a picture I posted after asking the stylist to make me wavier. Anyway watching this helped me a lot to boost that confidence alone, only I know what my hair can and cannot do, and only I can embrace it with confidence :)
Thank-you so much for this video! I feel like I just got a talk from my hair mom. :P I'm discovering that having wavy hair means I REALLY can't do the same things with my hair as all the curly people are doing and I have found it hard to find good videos aimed at people with my hair type. I learned some new things and you confirmed for me some things I had already discovered from trial and error.
Phoenix, About Everything And Nothing how is it going now? :)
The 10 Commandments for wavy girls:
Thank you!
Thanks, I was specifically looking for a comment like this because I was too lazy to watch the video
Ruth Gale lmfao me too
I spritz my hair with water with a bit of gel diluted in it on day 2 and 3 and scrunch it for a bit. Some days it looks even better than day 1. You're welcome.
Beglozano what kind of gel do you use?? that sounds very smart
You're amazing for this tip.. Thank you so much
Thanks!
My best day is 3rd, wash isn't bad but my curls need a few days to work themselves out. 2nd day hair is the worst!
Great idea!
"Thou shall not lust after curly hair"
🙊🙋♀️🙋♀️🙋♀️ GUILTY
Me too!
Yes, me too!
Haha I actually just want my wavy hair to be consistently wavy. I don’t necessarily want curls
Awesome video. what is your porosity level? you have such beautiful hair
Thank you! Low to medium porosity. :)

First time watcher - so impressed! You communicate clearly without rambling on about nothing for 20 minutes. Thank you!!!
Hah, thanks! I try to be succinct, but it's certainly a challenge on occasion.
Thank you for this! I am a 2a - 2b, typically referred to as classic, unruly Irish hair. Neither straight nor curly. I will definitely try your tips.
I have a feeling your 'unruly' hair will soon transform into glorious Irish waves. Keep me posted!
I also have 2a-2b hair and never knew what to do with it. It always looked funky but I'm going on my wavy hair journey and see where it goes!
I'm ALSO between 2a and 2b and Irish :D Didn't know that was a thing. I loved this video, even though the "stop lusting after curly curls" was a hard pill to swallow ;)
Not Irish :) but I think this is the first time I have seen a hair video for my type of hair! I'm also 2a-2b hair.
real life+curly girl Wish I could pop in a before & after! I think I love you! 😘
Kathy Everett give some time (months)
Same!
Would love an update on your journey!
Absolutely agree 100%. Beyond brilliant! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 💫🎇👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🎇💫
Omg the eye contact “ I will not lust after curly hair” 😂
Loved it
We have to be allowed to occasionally, right?
Ok, your comment seriously cracked me up! Good for you--try something new, girlfriend. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised! And keep me updated. ;)
Similar! I thought it was straight but frizzy and weird. ;) Finally trying to figure out how to embrace the waves and see what it looks like once I stop killing it by heat-styling several days a week!
Milubee same. I straighten my hair everyday and damage it. I need to try and embrace my waves
Same here!
Damn, I like your way with words. And I agree with you 100%.
I was with you until you blamed it on systemic racism and the patriarchy 🙄. The only people to blame are our fellow women (self likely included) for playing along and trying to meet the shallow standards that have become the cultural norm.
@@jenniferpeterson7618 with you on that one.
Oh, I'm so glad to have you here! I'm sure you will love your waves. Definitely takes time and patience, but you can get there!
This is so true!! I takes time, patience and trial and error but you will get there!
Hi I'm deaf and using the closed captioning but you keep saying something about "squish chicken dish" (I know the captions might be wrong here!) after about 3 minutes in, what is this squish chicken dish thing? Thank you!
squish to condish. :)
+Sasha Smith Oh goodness, what an awful closed captioning translation. Yes, it's squish to condish. 💕
Ah thanks very much
That is frustrating and I feel for you, but it also made me giggle. Like a scene from a movie 😄 I can just picture how confusing that would be.
You give me too much credit, but thank you. Happy to help, if I can!
nobody explained functional frizz the best. this is one of the best video blogs for our type of hair. keep up the good work.
Thank you so much, Ritchelle! I can't tell you how complimented I am! :)
i JUST started my wavy babe journey - i really cant believe i went 25 years without even knowing how wavy/curly my hair actually is...i'm so excited to see how my hair is going to look months from now, after i've gotten away from all the heat and figure out all the ins and outs of caring for my waves!
Excited for you!
This video has helped me way more then the 500+ curly girl videos ive watched 😭 thank you🙏
Hey, thank you so much for the tip about wearing makeup. I just shared it, and attributed it to you, on a curly girl forum on Facebook, about how makeup can take a blah hair day and disguise it as a good hair day. This tip has been hugely popular, and so you're helping a whole bunch of curlies, who now know to come here and look for you on RUclips. Thanks!
Thank you, sweet friend!
100% agree about wearing make up for a more polished look.
This is how I do it:
wet hair fully
shampoo using OgX Shampoo (argan oil one) only my roots
condition using OgX Conditioner (argan oil one), I started by combing through my hair getting out all the knots and then I squish to condish (making sure the hair is fully wet)
curl cream (lately I switch from devacurl wave maker and OgX coconut curl cream) I smooth over my whole hair (NOT combing it and mixing with water if needed) and I squish again
gel using Shea Moisture anti frizz max hold gel, I do the same thing to the gel as the curl cream focusing more on the areas where I need a greater hold
plop with a old cotton t-shirt for 10 to 30 min (matters on the day)
if needed I apply more gel if not I skip the step
diffuse using Xtava orchid diffuser (that I literally taped on to my old Conair from the early 2000s)
then I scrunch out the crunch
organ oil or silk therapy if I feel like my hair looks uncontrollable
most of this is thanks to this channel and I'm forever thankful that I finally love my hair but I am also trying new things all the time
hoped this helped or gave some people somewhere to start
So much great info for a beginner. One big thing not mentioned is to lose the brush. Wide tooth or finger comb only in the shower with hair drenched with conditioner.
Yes! Great addition to the list!!
I use spray on color (root touch up) or dry shampoo on the roots with my hair flipped upside down to get lift and volume. Really works!
I'm watching your videos in July of 2020 - LOVE you!! These are great, helpful videos! I'm just starting the CGM. Thank you!
I love that you said the makeup thing! I completely agree! I have to put on makeup every day for now until my curls get under control
I love functional frizz. Wavy's are in their own category I think. I consider myself a bonafied wavy and not a curly. Wavy's have to do stuff different then curly's.
You are 100% correct!
Finally.!! A wavy that follows the CG Method.! I'm going on a deep RUclips journey now. Youve just gained a follower 💙
Thank you, so practical and helpful and not just trying to push every different CG hair product. Thank you for telling me off about lusting after curls, I needed that!!
Glad it was helpful! Curl lust is REAL!!!
Excellent! So spot on and needed to be said! Preach wavy sister!
Hah! You crack me up. Thank you!
My wash day hair never looks as good as 2nd+ hair.
LOL!!!!! Sister Sergeant!!! I'm going to have to adopt that term. How endearing! Sounds like my oldest daughter, too. :) Happy you're here!
Yay!!!!!! Oh, this is just the best comment! Love those lightbulb moments!
It makes me so happy to find someone with wavy hair. Like a giant relief.
I personally use a dry shampoo every 3rd day, shampoo once a week and co wash twice a week and do a coconut oil, castor oil and olive oil mask for one whole day
Thank you! Yes I’ve stopped using curling iron. My hairdresser showed me how to use one perm rod on one spot that resists the curl and it worked!
Paula Greco You’ve got a great hairdresser!!!
Truth. I'm at the beginning of my wavy journey, and this is all super true.
This shed so much light. So much info for curlies not much for waviest out there
I have been doing the CG method for 3-4 weeks now hoping my hair was just "finding " its curl patterns.
+L Miller Hah! That is too funny! I’m so glad to be able to help. 💕
I kinda have to wet my hair every morning if want good results, the only sleeping method that has worked for me is sleeping in the crunch.
I’m also a 2b. Just found your channel. Thanks for all the great info !!!
+Brittany Swanton You’re so welcome!
Hello from allen tx! i am so glad i found u! Im a wavy but never thought i cpuld enhance it and it was a thing.
Thanks gurl
Thanks! I’ve been frustrated and trying too hard with my wavy/curly hair. I feel relief from watching this. Agreeing with you on all levels. 🙏🏻❤️
I'm so glad. The post-baby hair is NO JOKE!
Just take it slow. Excited for you!
Thank you for this!!!!! I’m on month 5 of adjusting to my wavy/curly hair & it’s been challenging!
Thank you...you already have helped me. :) Here's to a learning and sharing experience with people like you who have been there, done that!!
That make up comment is so true! Never thought that but as soon as you said it I was like YES.
So glad to have found you! I've been following a few curlies, and trying to adapt to my wavy hair. I feel like I've found a home!
Awww, you're so sweet! Thank you! :) I'm so glad to have you here!!
Anytime, my dear. :) That's what I'm here for! Bring me all the wavies!
Excited to be on your journey with you! You're on the right track!!
Love, love,love your honesty
Thank you SO much for these tips! Especially the make up and the fluffing! I TOTALLY get what you mean about the makeup!
Love you for this... every curly GIRLS dream wish I'd embraced MY waves so many years earlier. No longer inferior and over brushed.
Awwww, I'm so glad. Not inferior at all, ever!
Linden Peters glad you’re already making strides!!
Such great sentiments and advice. Makes my heart happy to hear this one resonated with you. :)
I rarely comment on videos but wow, you are so easy to listen too, made me smile all the way through.
You've made my day!
