Well, let's do another long one. This time around I'm joined by a new friend, Jan from Germany, who's also riding the EDT. I ride through some very picturesque landscapes and stumble upon a couple of sketchy roads along the EDT. Join me as I make my way south along the gravel roads of Northern Sweden in the search for that fantastic camp spot at the end of the day.
If you want the list of the Supermarkets along the road, send me an email at: biketouringmike@gmail.com and I'll send it over to you.
Thank you, for showing the European divide trail at a nice pace.
I love all this so much that I need to experience this trail in spring/summer next year. Thank you for your inspiration!
Thank you for your kind words!
Hi Mike, I so enjoy your bike touring videos. I've been following you for some time now. You are so natural with the camera and really draw in your followers to make it feel like we are riding right along with you. Blessings and see you next time.
Another great view of Sweden, thanks for sharing!
Thank you! Glad you liked it.
Very interesting about copper mining
Great video Mike, not sure I could handle the mosquitoes.
Great video Mike. A bit scary to cycle in the middle of nowhere, though 😅
Beautiful countryside & no crowds! Love it,perfect solo riding!thanx for sharing mike!😉👌🇸🇪
Wow
Amazing
❤
Always fantastic this trip, we can't wait to see the next stage with the city of Jokkmokk 👍👏👏
Thank you for the tips and the interesting facts about Sweden.
Thankyou mike great video as always!
Loving your adventures
Great video Mike! I always like the background and descriptions you give as you pass through different areas. Expands my knowledge and understanding. Thanks!
Another very good installment of your tour. Lucky find on the lean-to shelter.
Take care, Al
Another great video 🤙🏻 Enjoy your ride and have a great time 💯🏆
I really enjoy your journeys, Mike. Thanks a lot.
21:58 : I took a dinner break there as well. However, my water container was open and my bag was flooded and it was rainy. My licorice was soaked. Nice resting place but my temper wasn't the best at that time.
The mosquitoes would drive me absolutely insane! 😂 they bother me just watching your video.
Haha, thankfully I just have to deal with them in the evening when I set up camp. During the day they aren't active. And finding a great campsite like that by a lake usually means a lot of them as well. If you want to avoid them there are better places to pitch your tent.
I bought a net hat and I barely have mosquitoes some bees lots of grasshoppers this year trying to keep summer off of me lol
Trans Canada highway through the prairies means protection for your radiator. Grasshopper horror movie! ..lol
On the always another adventure RUclips channel the chap tested a small device which checks the water quality.
Looked really good, he was testing as a lot of people wild camping/bike packing in Scotland were getting ill this year drinking water straight from streams etc
Wonderful video again!
Would love to get the list of the options for supermarkets and distances 🎉
Ha one day i must go visit sweden, it looks so cool !…
Hi Mike.. love your videos…. I have a question about your Bike.. it looks to me if your fork has been installed wrong pointing opositite if i see the angle og the fork bending towards your frame. The brake disc is in the tights side and the brakecaliper om the frontside.. am i wrong😊 greetings from Denmark. Henrik👍
You are right. I just noticed it as well. Definitely backwards! That is actually quite dangeous, tough I have seen it way more often than I would have liked on bikes.
Hi Mike, when you transferred the Knorr contents to the Ziplock bag, I kind of expected you to toss in the foil-lid. ... Since you didn't... How do you know what's in your various Ziplocs ? 😂😂😂
Can't start a small campfire for those many bugs? No paradise for me anywhere, if there are mosquitoes around! *Thanks for sharing!
Thermacell is way more effective, and faster to start as well.
I was thinking watching this video today. There are an awful lot of trees in Sweden. The forests seem to never end.
We had enough gravel roads with big pebbles, it's like plowing threw clay. 😅
16:00 The language is "Sámi" ("Sápmi" means "Lapland"). To be accurate, there are several Sami languages, of which "Sámi" refers here specifically to Northern Sami (davvisámegiella). Finland for instance has three languages of the Sami group with locally recognized status: the Northern Sami language, the Inarian language (anarâškielâ) and the Skolt language (sääʹmǩiõll or nuõrttsääʹmǩiõll).
Linguistically speaking, Meänkieli could as well be classified as a dialect of Finnish.
Hello Mike, I want to ask you why you have the fork reversed on your Kona. It obviously doesn't spoil the handling. I really enjoy your channel. Best wishes Philip
This was asked in one of the earlier videos of this trip. He mentioned it was a genuine mistake, being distracted when putting the bike back together after the flight. Quite funny how you can ride so many kilometers without noticing the fork is the wrong way around haha
Pondering riding this route. What tire would you recommend?
I rode with 2,75" tires. That might have been a little bit overkill for this part of the EDT, but I've heard that they might come in handy on the Spanish-Portugese section. I would probably go for a tire around 45-50 mm for this part of the EDT.
@@BikeTouringMike Thanks...I"ve got 27.5 on the bike now, but not much in the way of knobs (Panaracer gravel small knob). Is there significant mud so I would want a more aggressive tire?
May the fourth be with you
Haha!
Hi Mike, another question. In another Video someone asked the question what sense it makes to carry dried food plus the water it needs, vs e.g. canned food, which already includes the water. Does that bring weight savings?
I was wondering about the ferry operating times: when I got there mid-August I just hauled myself over, around 0630 in the morning. Shouldn't self-ferrying be always possible?
I have to admit though that I was lucky that the ferry was on my side, otherwise I would probably have called one of the numbers. rowing the boats over three times seems to be quite a pains, especially considering that you could lose the boat you have to tie to your boat.
Great video series otherwise.
Kääntöjärvi is turning lake in Finnish.
Hi, Mike. Do you look to ride at a certain speed or just ride at whatever speed you get?
With global warming, Scandinavia with cooler temps will become extremely popular. They will have to spray for bugs.
Plus legal wild camping!
I wonder how expensive is to get/build one of those isolated red houses and whats the living out there like, since something like this basically doesnt exist where I live, let alone in the harsh weather
36:23 idk I ran into a place like this while in Sweden and the repelent actually stop them from biting me...tho if i wasn't exhausted I'd sooner run away :D ...and its not sustainable for a long outing
The isolated houses were built a generation or two ago when the work opportunities were different. There were jobs in the forests, either cutting down and selling timber on land that you owned, or working for some landowner or company. But all that is gone now, with all the sawmills and pulp factories centralised to the coastal areas and just a handful of machine drivers operating the equipment that has replaced hundreds of loggers.
And before anyone starts going off about how terrible this is, let me tell you about all the men in their thirties who had injured their backs by working with chainsaws in unergonomic positions and had to find new jobs elsewhere. It was NOT a healthy occupation.
So nowadays those houses are mostly used as vacation cabins by city dwellers who go there for weekends and holidays, or commuters who work in some town 50 km away. Or, in some cases, retirees who live there permanently
how tall are you and what size of bike frame you have?
I am 188cm/6"2 and I ride a Kona Unit X size XL (58).
Hello Mike, may I ask you how old are your kids? I am father of 2 and sometimes I feel bad for going bikepacking and leaving them at home :).
I have three kids, they are 19, 16 and 11. Believe me I feel guilty every single trip eve though they tell me it's ok that I gonon these trips. It gets better as they grow up though. My two oldest can't care less about me going away nowadays.
@@BikeTouringMike Thank you for the answer. My are smaller, only 8 and 3. I also hope that it will be better when they will grow up :).
@@BikeTouringMike😂
16:20 Sweden has five official minority languages: Finnish, mienkäli, Saami, Romani Chib and Yiddish
You're right. I missed two of them.
@@BikeTouringMike it’s okay to not know everything off the top of your head. I still enjoyed the video 😀
Jan, tell me about your bike.
(Shout out to Dustin Klein)
Haha, should have done a Dustin Klein interview. Can't believe I didn’t think of that.
Deciliters. Is it just I, a British person, who finds that unit weird? Having spent time in the Nordics I know it's common. We only use milliliters, litres and for some alcohol centilitres.
I've never understood the wanting to know all the details about hills before I get to them. You're riding it twice in your head when you do that, maybe more depending on how much you think about it before you get there. In your head you're thinking about all that work you have to do which you're going to have to think about again when you actually do it, I much prefer to just deal with what comes when it comes. It's okay to know the upcoming section is hilly but I have no interest in what the elevation change over distance is. It doesn't help me at all.
Is this a RUclips channel about your face? 🙏❤💪
Asshole ❤
