Peak Honda. Simple, reliable, straightforward. The dashboard shifter is unusual for a crossover but the dash-mounted parking brake is unique. Apart from the Lexus GX and G-Wagen you don't see side-opening tailgates any more because upward hatches are more convenient in tight spaces. I love how these and the Rav4 used to have the spare tire on the back despite having no pretense of off-roading. If you need "a car" one of these will do well.
I took my 2006 CRV off-roading with some friends just to see what it could do, and it actually surprised us. Had to leave it behind once we got to some very sharp rocks because I didn't feel like puncturing a tire, but it had just enough ground clearance and all the traction in the world. Probably could've completed the whole trail with better tires. Truly the perfect all around car
I agree. I just bought a 2008 CR-V this year and while it only has just over 100,000 miles there are a lot of things I wish it still had that the previous gen did like the mounted spare tire and the overall car being less bulky. It is essentially the same k-series engine and transmission but it doesn't feel as light and agile as the previous gen. Each one has their pros and cons. I still say it's one of the most reliable SUVs you can buy right up there with the RAV4.
i really want this generation of CR-V since the size of the car is exactly what i'm looking for... but for Philippine standards, the fuel consumption is just not that good.
If I’m not mistaken, this could also be the radio cubby if the CR-V was fitted with a screen for navigation (as they were in Japan). In that case, the top cubby (where the radio is now) gets the navigation screen instead.
I love my 2002 honda crv. The all wheel drive paired with the 5 speed manual transmission makes it easy to drive in snow and make the driving experience a lot of fun.
I have a 2nd gen CRV, and I absolutely love how utilitarian it is compared to nearly all other crossover SUVs (except for the Element). There's really nothing like it, and it's sad that Honda kind of abandoned that utilitarian, outdoorsy, truck-like philosophy for the later generations. There's really nothing like it for sale today besides maybe the Bronco Sport. But that's about it
Great review. I currently own one of this, got it as my second car, caught myself just driving this. Loved it so much that actually sold my 8th gen Civic Si. Forgot to mention that the back seats actually reclined and move forward and back, wich most modern SUVs dont do nowadays.
OMG that car lasted us for ever! Sooooo many milestones memories, camping trips, roadtrips, snowstorms. We actually picked up all my kids from hospital when they were born throughout the years. They're bulletproof and keep their value. Sold it for 5k with 300.000k. rust is the only silent killer
My wifes 2005 currently has 202k and is still going well , albeit with some minor problems. The AWD is great, it can get almost as many places as my Tacoma. I will say while I like the car, it has some of the most uncomfortable seats for long trips. Also that table has come in handy so many damn times its ridiculous.
In the UK made CRVs (mine's 06 2.2 i-cdti), the 'storage' space above the air controls has a circulation switch and is a chiller compartment 🎉 There is no cupholder where yours has, it has an ash tray. Also, the back door, the upper glass opens separately on the tailgate. I use it regularly, very handy. Just to note that you never need to buy new headlights, they buff up great. Got mine done recently and they're as new. I added 2 halogen spots a few years ago, on a switch, and the CRV is so satisfactory all around. Mine' on 230k miles, had it 6 years and wouldnt part with it even if I won the Euromillions. Apart from perhaps an Element or Pilot, these are perfection. Extremely capable with the right tyres. Eg. BFG K02s for offroad or Dunlop Grandtrek SJ6 for extreme snow (I picked up cheap winters on Honda alloys for peanuts!). More capable offroad than most people are. But require use of momentum and a lot of skill as backend power can kick in and out at worst moments. So, diff locks miles better and all electronic miles better again for newbies. But few push crvs or any vehicle to the limit offroad. Bottomline, all around, they're unbeatable. I run mine on BFG Urban Terrain now. Just great. The wealthiest family in my region, an old money family, have 2 loyal working CRVs proudly parked beside their 17th century house, alongside the latest Landies and Mercs. Old Hondas have the hearts of lions 😂
Amazing video. I owned a 2002 crv, ended up gifting it to my older sister lmao. It has 200,000 miles and we just did some work on it. Should last a lot longer too
I got mine 2 months ago in the 2.0 RVI auto derivative which was unfortunately the only option available in my country at the time of release. Brilliant vehicle, can basically do anything you need it to do on a day to day basis without any complaints or issues. Major cons are fuel consumption and under-powered but it's something that I've adapted to. On the inside, I basically like the design because it's minimalist in nature yet suits all needs perfectly. The RVi is very basic with a cloth interior that has held up extremely well as with the plastics and other trims being no exception. I love the seat folding system which is better than most SUV's however when the seats fold back completely the way they do, you do lose a tiny bit of loading length, just letting the guys who like to load longer items know but it's still great because you are basically loading on the level floor of the vehicle as opposed to the back of the seats. Another problem is the weak AC system. For anyone who is used to a classic car setup, it will take you a few days to get used to the layout of the cockpit but in 2 weeks, you won't want to drive another vehicle. The picnic table is awesome!!! So far she has excelled my expectations and is more than capable of handling any urban or light off road situations with the utmost of ease. As long as it's not crazy serious off roading, the AWD system of that period is capable of handling harsher terrain than most standard luxury or mainstream SUV's. What that essentially means that she is able to handle almost any weird situation or you will at least be able to make your own routes past obstacles if need be. Build quality is like a tank, everything about her seems solid from the doors to the steering and road holding is phenomenal but don't expect sports car handling because she is an SUV after all. I've driven BMW X3 2.0d and X5 M50D and while both outperform the CRV by miles in terms of performance, luxury and comfort in all classes they unfortunately will not outlive this vehicle and so it always comes down to the factor of longevity and reliability. I see this as a vehicle I would like to keep long term and rreally see how much I can get out of her.
I have an 06 SE auto. Love this thing to death. Threw some roof racks on to haul my kayaks on. Can confirm that this car is "Granola". that table has come in handy many times as well. My only complaint is there is nothing else in the back deck to hold it up when the table is out, so if you have stuff back there it all sags down when the table is removed and you have to really shuffle stuff to get the table back in.
I had a 2004 Honda Crv LX with 289k miles. The engine finally crapped out. I went out and found a 2006 Crv SE. Love this SUV’s. Do a little maintenance and they run forever.
We had a 05 this was the car I came home in from the hospital, so this car has a deep place within my heart. It warms it to see one in such good condition!
This is my favorite crv to this day. It had its own style. It wasn’t trying to be something it wasn’t. Reliable, quirky suv. It reminds me of a smaller more nimble pilot of that generation
I love these. The 5spd are only going to go up in value as of today. I see 30+ a day on average in my little rural NorCal county. Honda Boi for life. ❤
I work at a Honda dealership and I’m tempted to buy one of these every time they come in! I love the way they drive and the steering feels light and I like that about it. I refrain tho bc I already have a car, a 2011 fit. But would really like awd :)
These are great vehicles. I found a 5spd model a year ago, in Silver Moss Metallic, with AWD, sunroof, and the tinted glass. 272k on it then, 277 on it now. Love the silly thing and it's been a fantastic road trip and ski tool.
Interesting quirk of this generation of CRV is that in some markets, you can get an eight seater option (a bench seat in the front and third row seating). The third row only good for small kids. Also some markets, you can fit an extra spare tire under that table.
Not fancy but extremely dependable. My college daughter is driving a pass down 2008 CR-V LX that is still running flawlessly at 236K miles and she loves her ride.
The best CRV every built. After this model it went down hill like many other makes and models. It's does quite well off road, with a good driver, a little lift, good off road tyres it will go places that will surprise many... It's not a jeep it wasn't built for rock crawling. It's a nice design, simple, excellent reliability, simple to work on just how it should be. Plus it has one of the best engine's ever designed. In the update 05/06 the 5 speed auto is built proof, both need good maintenance to keep the longevity. Yes, one of the best SUV's every built. They have a great following.
My brother's partner's mom is looking to get rid of her 06 CRV. Only has 56000 miles on it! Rarely ever drove it. I could use a good second car. I'm going to ask her if she wants to sell it to me.
I'm still driving this exact car! It still runs perfectly fine, and since insurance is dirt cheap, I'm going to keep it running as long as is physically possible. That "odd" storage cubby at 3:48 is for you CD cases, for the CD player. That's still what I have in mine... not garbage.
I know Im a couple years late but the seats are also designed to convert to a bed for 2. Slide both front seats forward, remove headrests and recline to match the seat in the back.
I have this car car in 2.2 diesel...manual aswell ....in black.... Its really a good car and being diesel I can get 54mpg on the motorway at 60mph...very economical and tough. The us market really missed out not being able to buy a diesel.
Funny how utilitarian this generation of CRV is. I just bought a 2002 model here in my country. Nothing fancy, just that it came with a bench type front passenger seat and a third row seat at the back. I could theoretically sit 8-10 decent size people with no luggage in there 🤣
Hi, love your CRV. is it normal that the temperature indicator is below the middle? I always wondered because my CR-V temperature indicator looks the same. It never goes over the middle it stays right below the temperature sympol. You can see it also in your CR-V at 2:36
Great video. The garbage middle empty compartment on your car is nothing but aircooled compartment for high end version for storing cooldrinks and cans.
4:00 I remember when riding a rental CRV. That component was the COOL BOX where you put ur stuff to cool down, but I guess this one doesn’t have the cool box option
The flip center console makes it easy to get crap that falls in between the front seats..the newer ones make it difficult to clean or get your phone that slipped down there.
I had no idea these ever came in manual 🤯 My best friend in High Schools Dad had one of these. Good memories of all of us piling in and just driving around our small town doing nothing. Or sitting in the local McDonald’s parking lot in the trunk area parked with a bunch of other kids from school 😂
The cubby by the hand break was for c d s they fit perfectly the pads get seat had a drawer under the seat too I had one got in an accident I miss it like crazy best vehicle I ever had this
225k on mine, I don't even maintain it properly and it's not given me one problem other than a VSA light that I'm working to figure out. Reliable, efficient, and super practical car. Driving up winter driveway after a snowfall, so easy. Buy a big air conditioner, just plop it in the back and on my way. Excellent dog vehicle too, perfect size for my GSD.
Just had the engine rebuilt in my '02. Rings were shot and the exhaust cam was galling at 235k. I do wish I had the 5 speed auto or better yet a manual.
@artboy789, yes, the 2006 CR-V does have a pop open rear glass window. It even has the release button located inside the cabin, on the lower area, of the driver's side front door.
Just bought a 2006 CR-V. Unfortunately the base LX, but it only has 141K miles on it. Another quirk/option you didn’t mention was the rear pop-up window. I think this may be the last year for that.
I too own a 2006 CRV SE gold color that I truly love. It’s got 120k on it and all in all in very good condition. Any idea where I can purchase OEM or equivalent driver side floor mat in this color? With time I’ve developed a ‘heel hole’. I checked the local dealer but they are no longer available. Thx!
My uncle's friend had a 2004 CR-V EX that had the manual transmission whick is actually rare. As a matter fact, if you go into my channel, there's an old video I made showing off that car. I tried to be a car reviewer 10 years ago, but I was getting criticized that I was copying Saabkyle04. As far as the car, it got totaled a few years ago.
Have an 03 with 280,000 miles. Love it but the damn sway bar links clunking drive you crazy. Have replaced them twice in 75000 miles. I've given up and told my wife to live with the noise.
if you slide front seat all the way forward then take headrest off and recline all the way you can then recline back seat and basically have a place to sleep !
In the European made ones anyway, in winter yes it can hold CDs or binoculars and digital camera in my case and in summer? Food, drinks etc as its a coolbox with a variable aircon control. 🎉

This generation of CRV are undoubtedly the greatest vehicles ever mass produced
I like this generation of CRV. Perfect for backpacking and camping.
I find that the Honda CR-Vs age well, the older ones don't look like old relics.
The middle cubby in the dash was intended for CDs, they fit perfectly and this was displayed in the brochures!
In other regions, that middle cubby could also be a cold storage one 🤯
If I’m not mistaken, this could also be the radio cubby if the CR-V was fitted with a screen for navigation (as they were in Japan). In that case, the top cubby (where the radio is now) gets the navigation screen instead.

South Africa here confirming the same setup on our ashtrays and coolboxes. Just a real shame we never got a diesel variant here - only 2L iVtec.

😂 agreed, same here, I pointed it out just now in other comments also.
Does that back window pop open for easy access without opening the huge door to get into the back?
@artboy789, yes, the 2006 CR-V does have a pop open rear glass window. It even has the release button located inside the cabin, on the lower area, of the driver's side front door.
Thanks for this mate - this info is exactly the type I was looking for in considering a purchase ⭐️

i keep my yeti in that pull out cup holder and it never falls out somehow, same size as yours
Thank you for the review.
Aha.. nostalgia 🙌🏼🔥❤️
Thx!
You forgot to mention the adjustable reclinable rear seats
I daily drive my 06 crv it’s amazing I love it
Etsy sells inserts to fix the cup holder issue. I bought one and never had issue since. 👌🏾
This was great thanks for posting .
You forgot to show the rear glass opener by pressing a button inside.
I have an ‘06 Cr-V and it came with a table and chair in the rear compartment. Yours?
chair????
there is a table in this video but no chair
That’s my favorite car! The 2006 Honda crv in the black finish
3rd gen is a socker mom car. 1st and 2nd are adventure vehicles
The middle box on my 2006 is a cool box and it blows cold air into it
Have an 03 with 280,000 miles.
I love my 2004. I'm in the market for another of the same year.
3:53 ''weird storage compartment'' could hold box of cds
In the European made ones anyway, in winter yes it can hold CDs or binoculars and digital camera in my case and in summer? Food, drinks etc as its a coolbox with a variable aircon control. 🎉
wanna see you review an e500!
Honda once said that there cars are designed around you.
This is the best gen of CRV. How come you didn't show how that console flips down and then you can walk between the front seats to the rear?
awesome off road suv
I want to buy a 2nd gen CRV just for the secret table
Always had a soft spot for the CR-V
Just got one for 5,500$ with 195k miles. Hope I can make it last to 250 and beyond.
What year ?
I would love to see that car come back brand new just the way it is. Don't like the new ones at all.
