  • It’s a lot easier than you might think to put 18 gauge nails into your air nailer. In this video I’ll go through the differences between 18 gauge and 16 gauge nails and some ways that you can quickly tell that you’ve got the right size for the right nailer. By accident we put in some 18 gauge nails into a 16 gauge air nailer and it worked about every five times. There was a big jam up and we realized we put the wrong nails in. No damage to the air nailer the 18 gauge nails, a longer strip to help you know which Naylor if they’re going into a lot of nailers of the same whether it’s central pneumatics from Harbor freight or Hitachi. They all work about the same way

Thanks...I just had several jams and I thought that it was my old 30 year old gun, but when I looked at the box of brad nails....I bought 18 gauge instead of 16 gauge.....maybe check a little closer next time....LOL

Thanks for advice. I'm not a carpenter but wife got me a finishing nail gun for Xmas But never used one. I'm actually a welder and plumber. But I'm learning. Thanks again.

I just purchased this nailer from Home Depot and I find that it is not nailing the 2 inch 18 gauge Brads. It will however nail 1 inch brads . The description said it is supposed to use the 2 inch 18 gauge. Not sure what’s wrong. any-idea? Thanks nice video

Thought I was doing something wrong i just bought a new craftsman 6 gallon, 18 gauge combe but forgot braids so I borrowed some from my brother-in-law, had all sorts of problems, went back and looked at the braid box turned out it was 16 gauge.

FYI: If you continue to try and fire a 16 gauge nail in a 18 gauge, you will split the cylinder in the nail gun. I found this out from experience as I thought I had a problem with the nail gun. Only problem was I used the wrong nails. duh.

How about if we have the same proper gauge size but we put a smaller depth brad nail than the minimum , Will it work or the brad might get jam or make it half way throw the wood .?

But this about using thinner nails. They fit, I am here to find what goes wrong in that case.

This happens to me tonight. I borrowed my brother in laws finishing nailer & it kept jamming on me, shooting out two nails at once, etc... it was very frustrating cause a simple project turned into a lot of aggravation. Then I realized what you’re saying here. He has 18GA nails for a 16GA nailer. Off to the hardware store tomorrow. 🙄

For just general handyman/around the house usage should I go with 16 or 18 gauge?

18 ga honestly. That’ll hang all your interior doors and base board/ trim. 16 ga is more for like exterior finishes in my experience, like fascia etc.

Sadly I was using 18G in a 16G nailer. Blamed the nailer until I realized my fault. Bought 16 gauge nails going forward. ooooops duh!!!

Pretty Easy. Look at the part number on your nailer or read a manual. If you pick an old nail gun without a part number or a manual it may be more hassle than it is worth. Time is money for most people.

Couldn’t figure out why my brad nailer wouldn’t fire nails. Spent time and money getting different hose pieces so I had zero leaks. Everything was done correctly and I was convinced it was the nailer. Until I realized I was using 16 gauge nails in an 18 gauge nailer.

It’s easier and I thought to mix up the nails. It would be nice if they just didn’t fit. I was really glad when we figured out what the problem was. I’m also glad there was no damage to the nailer.👍👍
