    Excellent use of registration for such a diverse organ. This is afterall a symphony and the resources of the organ should be used to tgeir full advantage. His registration allowed for passages to be heard more clearly in a room with very difficult acoustics to work around. I've heard this piece on a much smaller baroque organ and with two people pulling stops it was just as majestic so one should not compare to the limitations of St Sulpice. You should listen to the redition of Allegro Vivace also by this excellent artist to get an idea how Widor's music can be successfully played on different era organs.

    An often absurdly registered and frantically rushed performance, exhibiting a lack of musicality, poeticism and humility. A great Widor masterpiece marred by virtuosic showing off, achieving little else but a senseless sonic blur - the lovely nuance and wonderful drama too often completely lost in these oceanic acoustics. Such a magnificent work and instrument (certainly one of the world's grandest) deserve far better.
    I much prefer Albert Schweitzer's vintage, slow interpretation to this. At least there we experience understanding and heart.

      It is the opposite of a baroque organ ! The original Cavallié_Coll dates from the 19th Century ! Baroque/classical is more like 17th-18th Century organs.
      Contemporaneous organs tend to be a little of everything so you can play anything without being limited by technical issues.
      You want to see a real French baroque organ, go to the South of France, there plenty of them down there... and Baroque school organists would certainly refuse to play such a "worthless piece" (their point of view) on their instruments !

    • @Gottenhimfella
      @Gottenhimfella 5 лет назад

      @@drbobdrake2613 Indeed they did, making it the only organ I know of with no less than three 32' reeds (one on the Récit Expressif manual !), not to mention a 32' "Montre" providing the fundamental for the Plein Jeu on the Grand Orgue *manual* -- a rank which makes you do a double-take when you enter the church in person, because what looks in photos like the usual 16' display rank above an 8' rank you tend to get in large cathedrals, is actually a 32' over a 16' (which means the ceiling is higher than most steeples)
      When you consider that a couple of centuries ago, every French organ pedal division was based on 8' pitch, St Eustache's Grand Orgue's Plein Jeu is two octaves deeper than traditional pedal division - and given that the "Montre" 32' & 16' were inherited from the mid 19th Century instrument rather than forming part of the rebuild, that represented a VERY sudden deepening, almost like going through puberty twice in succession in one lifetime !
