I would have loved one of these to play with in high school mechanics...just to smoke the shop out.... everyone seemed to have a competition of seeing who could smoke that entire wing of the school out, with this, I'd definatley have won lol
It sounds like an older locomotive like an alco. Not normal for the exhaust to come out the sides but hey good thing it was at the shop that day. Much needed work to be done.
they had disconected the turbos on the exhaust side so the engine was not getting the required amount of air and was running like crap. also thats why the smoke was blowing out the doors i suspect they may have attempted to reroute the exhausts around the turbos to stop most of the smoke building up in the engine bay but i dont think it worked well
According to some of the comments the poor old girl just exploded and took half the state down with smog BUT when it gets buttoned up with the turbo turning all will be right with the world again. Some folks just don't get it.
This is Portland and Western Railroad (PNWR) EMD SD40-3 # 3053 at the PNWR Squarehouse locomotive shop in Albany, Oregon, USA! It still has it's fully functional 20 cylinder EMD 645E3C prime mover!
Looks and sounds like they started it sans turbo, after sitting that long to just blow any crap out of it, without damaging the turbo and thermatic clutch.... common practice. It also "sounds like" there's an open test cock on one of the cylinders.... it's definitely Not the sound of just the open exhaust manifold. By the way, is.. or was, this unit one G&W's ?? I thought they bought a few of the SD 45's from MRL (Montana Rail Link) who, back in the 90's and into the early/mid 2000's had the largest fleet of SD 45's in the country. Thanks for the video... good post.
OMG, the only thing worse I have ever seen is when I poured 90-weight oil down the spark plug holes in my old Volvo for a compression check, and then immediately drove it. But, I am a train watcher. Main line Illinois Central, 54 St., Chicago, City of New Orleans, Panama Limited, South Shore electric with the orange cars. The UP and BNSF main lines through Merced County. Used to sit in the Marysville, WA BK right by the tracks and watch the oil and coal trains go by hoping to win the ghetto lottery. Now, the main line through Madera, CA. Quite a train life. I was literally, not figuratively or metaphorically, literally, part of the scenery of the City of New Orleans. We were the kids playing pickup slow pitch in the tenement back yard. "Don't you know me, I'm your native son, I'm the train they call the City of New Orleans, I'll be 500 miles 'fore the day is done." The Iron Horse, the great iron artery of all of our lives, whether we know it or not. Kudos to William Least Heat Moon (Blue Highways). I'm reading his book right now, and I don't I could spin out this yarn if I wasn't.
Did you get the riff about the "ghetto" lottery. I think you mean Merced. I'm in Madera right now. Great little town. The only thing it lacks is an Applebees and a Costco. A lot of the big chains don't bother with us because we are so close to Fresno.
I love the rumble these EMD's have when you start them up or are running them around Notch 3-4. Was it down for a scheduled rebuild or did it suffer a catastrophic failure? How bad was the damage? Don't see much G&W power where i'm at. The only ones I've seen at all were at the DGNO yard in Carrollton Tx a few years back. Thanks for the upload and good job putting her back together. She's what an SD45?
Does this unit have dash 2 electrical and a 16 cylinder 645 in it now? We got an SD45 down here that's still a non-derated 20 cylinder that has not been upgraded to dash 2 electronics.
maybe but most of it was because they had disconected the turbos from the Exhaust to clear out the carbon and other debris to avoid fouling them thats why its smoking inside the engine bay and its also running like crap
they had disconected the turbos on the exhaust side so the engine was not getting the required amount of Air. also thats why the smoke was blowing out the doors i suspect they may have attempted to reroute the exhausts around the turbos to stop most of the smoke building up in the engine bay but i dont think iw worked well
The color scheme looks like a Portland and Western. Look at videos of the Toledo Hauler and the scheme looks the same. The Portland and Western runs a number of short lines in Oregon and runs some old BNSF trackage down the Willamette valley.
If you search for PNWR Harbor Turn, you can see the 3053 at work. The PNWR is about the best short line operator for maintenance of both trackage and power units. Their Albany OR yard does it all on the power units.
I feel like all of the G & W shortlines are well taken care of. The Buffalo and Pittsburg runs through the area where I live and I can tell you that they run inspection trucks every day to make sure the lines are safe.
Kody Clayton.... from the paint color's and striping, I would say that it (at least, use to) belong to Genesee & Wyoming.... a large multi - short line and regional railroad operator.
The stop-clicking BS ruined it. Turned what could have been a good video into something that some young railfan would do when he was learning how to use a camera.
Damn, That’s How Chevy Blazer Starts.

When the mosquitoes are at their peak and you've run out of Off.
If you look at the locomotive, it is a former Southern Pacific SD45
V20
You Can Tell By The Headlight On The Nose.
That sounded beautiful
nice video
Awesome video. I guess you can call that a smoke show!

The turbo was closed off to keep dirt and soot from the exhaust stacks from getting into the turbo.
The smoke is really funny that engine is really funny
Awesome video and footage. I like it!
According to some of the comments the poor old girl just exploded and took half the state down with smog BUT when it gets buttoned up with the turbo turning all will be right with the world again. Some folks just don't get it.
I want a train now
Then give EMD around $150,000 and you have one
Me also dude
Then you need Sterling Rail!
www.sterlingrail.com/classifieds/Listings.php?type=Locomotive&fsw=FS
lol
If trains had a 6 speed...
THEN WE WILL HAVE DIESEL TRAINS RACING
That will be entertaining to watch

Thanks for the upload and good job putting her back together. She's what an SD45?
The engine was replaced with a 16 cylinder one.
That an SD45?
Trainzguy2472 Yes
Yes it is, with the 20 cylinder engine removed and a 16 cylinder installed.
Pretty neat
Does this unit have dash 2 electrical and a 16 cylinder 645 in it now? We got an SD45 down here that's still a non-derated 20 cylinder that has not been upgraded to dash 2 electronics.
Yes it does on both.
It’s going to be a BNSF train
the inside smoke is for the depressors opened,,,is true???
maybe but most of it was because they had disconected the turbos from the Exhaust to clear out the carbon and other debris to avoid fouling them thats why its smoking inside the engine bay and its also running like crap
@@mrmoderator5678 correct.
I like the comments from the " know it all". Get a life. They are not starting the loco for your enjoyment.
How about you " know it all's" go fix it
Why are you so aggressive toward the " know it alls"? Calm down. Breath
Loco seems to be made by volkswagen 🤣🤣
They didn’t close the cylinder cox all the way
ussjohnston1 sounded like that to me also
Puahahahahahahhahahahahaha
Correct.
Exactly. Get the water and shit out. It’s been sitting for a year
it lives
Emd ?
Yes it is. Had the 20 cylinder engine replaced with a 16.
HOW DO YOU MAKE A SECOND GENERATION EMD CHUG LIKE AN ALCO RS-11
open 4 test cocks.
Why so much smoke coming out the doors?
they had disconected the turbos on the exhaust side so the engine was not getting the required amount of Air. also thats why the smoke was blowing out the doors i suspect they may have attempted to reroute the exhausts around the turbos to stop most of the smoke building up in the engine bay but i dont think iw worked well
How’s the locomotive now?
Holy fuck
Utah railway?
No
Portland and Western RR
Is this an SD60?
Shane's Trains57: its an sd45. Sd60s are bigger than this locomotive.
What was with the video freezing then going dark then playing again?
I took a picture while recording the video.
Portland 3053
i wish gandw usa purchase our australian g and w bulldogs that are rotting away
What rail line is this on?

I will build a house with locomotives now if I have more MONEY....AND A PILOT
Somebody want some smoked meat?
What railroad is that
Kody Clayton.... from the paint color's and striping, I would say that it (at least, use to) belong to Genesee & Wyoming.... a large multi - short line and regional railroad operator.
its nocking pretty bad
The stop-clicking BS ruined it. Turned what could have been a good video into something that some young railfan would do when he was learning how to use a camera.
quit your whining and appreciate it for what it is. if it really bothers you, just download the video and edit them out
I was taking some still photos along with the video. I was the locomotive manager at the time, not a rail fan looking on.
Thank you for posting this, please post more, but talk less.
Reduce your commentary by about 80%.
The Genesee & Wyoming located in Retsof , NY. which is about 26 miles s.w. of Rochester, N.Y.
and stop taking still pics it F#$ up the video
The talking completes this style of video. You're 100% incorrect.
And yes, people who take stills while recording should be slapped.
It wasn't taken as a rail fan. I was the loco manager starting a unit with the engine replaced but thought I would share the video.
