    Turn signal circuits are often an area of trouble for technicians. In all cases, the turn signal switch is also in charge of the hazard lights and to make matters worse, the hazard and the turn signal switch is often a separate unit. Here in this section, we'll not concentrate on the hazard switch, but simply explain how to wire the entire turn signal system. The idea is to offer a way to make the turn signals operational if you have no parts available, due to the vehicle being out of the parts market, being too rare or just due to the high costs. In actuality, this wiring arrangement can be used even if you have no turn signal switch, which would then be substituted using standard buttons or flip switches.
    This circuit also employs a regular flasher unit right at the 12 volt input. The flasher unit feeds both relays. This is done for the sake of efficiency and to reduce costs. The only drawback to using one flasher is that whenever the hazard is activated, the lights will flash at a faster rate.
    Let's analyze this circuit:
    Power is fed from the 12 volt supply, through the fuse and to one side of the flasher unit. The other side of the flasher feeds terminals.... Get the whole story right now in this video...Enjoy...

    Wow, I would love to see that finished. Post here with a video post. You can always use a LM555 timer chip. They're cheap and easy to find. Work with the magnetic coil side... So a 555 and a small transistor can definitely trigger the relay at a specific or for a specific period of time. Good luck...

    Very good question and the answer is "BOSCH Style Universal" relay. It is sold almost everywhere, such as electronic parts places and most auto parts. mouser and digikey has them at 2 to 3 buck each and even less in quantity. Hope that helps and thanks for posting.

    Very informative. I just fixed a relay (fixed, not replaced!) in my 87 Starlet and got curious as to how I'd go about replacing the turn signal system it if the cable went bad on me.

    The relay coil terminals can be either or. You don't have to worry about polarity on the relay coil terminals. Makes sense?

    Can you help me with my set up.
    I installed a side marker.
    I have source for the relay:
    1.Steady Positive Parklight
    2.blinking Positive signal light
    3.negative
    What I wanted to do is when Parklight is On the side marker are On too with the Parklight then I do signal light the Side marker and front back signal light will signal.
    And when the Parklight is off the side marker is off too and when I use signal light the side marker and front back signal light do the signal. Anyone knows how to do this maybe I need 2 relays each side? And how to set it up please.

    THere are 2 an 3 terminal flashers, but they do the same thing and can be wired the same way. The 3 terminal just has dual contacts. They're simple units. Do a google for how they constructed for further insight. Makes sense?

    86 and 85 one goes to power and the other to positive. In this video 85 can go to VSS or Power and 86 controlled by the turn signal lever. Makes sense?

    Could I use simple two prong relays to fix my TSM box on my 94 HD Sportster? The hazards flash normally but do not flash (left/right) individually. They stay on but don't flash.

    If you use that system you do not need any relays just put the turn signal switch where you have put the relays in the first place

    Hi, I was wondering if someone could please help me with setting up LED indicators for a road legal motocross bike? I have a 12 volt battery already along with 1 LED relay and 4 indicators and finally the handlebar controlls where the indicators would be activated. I don't need a hazards system but I find electrics extremely difficult and my project is pretty much dead in the water right now. My relay doesn't have any of the numbers mentioned in the video and is a three prong relay. Mine has E(31) L(49a) and B(49) I have no idea how to wire them up and would greatly appreciate it if someone could give me some step by step instructions or create a simple diagram? much appreciated :)

      This is very easy to arrange my friend, the three prong relay you have has E(31) L(49a) and B(49) terminals which are earth, indicator and supply accordingly ; all you have to do is to follow the diagram displayed on the video, then instead of the 2 prong relay you will bypass it and then connect your 3 prong relay as follows; E(31) goes to earth, L(49a) goes to the relay coils (85) and B(49) goes to battery. That's all mate, with this configuration you will be able to run any kind of bulb, led or both without affecting the flashing rate.

My problem is when I tried hooking up them I realize I had to change the wiring , I trace the fuse but it's burnt out all I have Is direct circuit running my head lights , no high and low beam settings.

    Why it flashes faster when one bulb is out

    • @compositeguy4696
      @compositeguy4696 8 лет назад

      +o0Orange Because of the current, Let's say, if a Bulb drains 100 mah, then you add two 100 mah bulbs,
      2x100=200=mah, 200 mah will make the relay slower, if a bulb burns out, the load of the relay is 100 mah, which will speed it up.
      I am horrible at explaining things, but i hope you found it useful

      o0Orange the resistance of the circuit goes down so there is more amperage traveling through the circuit causing more heat in the relay wich in turn results in faster flashing

    • @Verschlimmbesserung
      @Verschlimmbesserung 6 лет назад

      Because the flasher is actually a thermal flasher, which means it operates by heating and cooling. Put most simply, it's about a spring that gets hot when current flows through it due to its resistive nature, which in turn causes it to expand and then force forward a bent piece of metal contact that closes the circuit, as now current flows through the light bulbs and not through the resistor, which causes the spring to cool off and shrink back to its original position, breaking the circuit. This happens in a matter of a second.
      Now, with this in mind, we got to the point of your question. It flashes faster because in that case more current flows through one less resistor, causing the bi-metal to heat up more quickly.

      The clicking has nothing to do with coil clicking, which is just the mechanical action of the coil contact points in operation.

  • @johnterpack3940

    That serves no purpose at all. If you have a switch and you have a flasher then you already have a complete signal circuit. Adding relays just adds unnecessary wire and components. Signal lights don't draw enough current to benefit from relays, especially with LEDs being everywhere now.
