The contrast between his coherency, poise and control here upon his first spoken words and the dishevelled, twisted and demented form at the end is the real story.
This scene is great - it expertly sets up the entire movie and tells you everything you need to know about Daniel - what he says, how he says it, and what he doesn't say. It's fantastic acing from a fantastic script. I also love that there are like 15 minutes of movie before this scene, all of them without a single spoken line of dialogue.
I think also the scene right at that the beginning where he is mining for silver, and then has to drag himself, the silver and the cart, with broken legs, back to the town. This tells us all we need to know about this character.
There is some significance, I think, to when the camera briefly pans in on HW, but then changes course and re-centers back on Daniel. Heck if I know what that significance is though. Such an amazing film. Later on when Daniel confesses there is nothing that he likes about people, this scene comes to mind.
I've noticed that too, there is a slight focus pull between the two as well. The pan comes right after he talks about his business being a family business - his big selling point.
@@bleakoutput Its because this scene directly follows where HW is a baby inside the train with Daniel, affirming that HW is in fact the orphaned baby from the previous scene without reminding you with dialogue or obvious visual cues.
I also think it might be alluding to the fact that Daniel says with his words that it’s a family business so the frame has them both centred for a moment but ultimately it goes back to Daniel as the centre because it’s really all about him and always will be
I think the beginning would have you believe that Daniel really means well when it comes to adopting HW when in reality he just wants to use him to prop up his own business
Daniel looks so done with the guy to his right. Always glancing over at him. It's like before the scene a story is already established that this guy wasn't welcoming to Daniel. At the end he even smirks at him Lol
I thought the whole point was how readily he lies to manipulate people, Daniel has several people die on his rigs, and he himself fell down a pit breaking his own leg. He isn't the professional he claims to be, and he makes mistakes all the time.
if watch this movie and gangs of new york and linoln youll find that lewis created an accent and personality for each character and if you also compare his real life character. hes literally the defnition of method acting
Daniel the type of guy that if u know even if u could overpower him physically hes still terrifying to the point ull be up all night shadow boxing waiting for him to come slit your throat knowing hes only just going to pop up when u finally fall asleep & least expect it coming!!!! 💯
The best cinematic artistry masterpiece film. You can tell it's a good movie because it has foreboding violin music, mustaches, 18th century costumes and confusing oil intrigues or whatever it's about 👍
Viewers read into everything but I look at his son at the end compared to this moment and see him being used as his “father’s” prop. Albeit I think Daniel had a good relationship with his son for many years and I feel he wanted to raise him as his own until he told him he wanted to go to Mexico, at which point Daniel, in his personal manner of non acceptance of having a competitor instead of a son, tried to tear him down.
@@benjaminmorton4958 i disagree, respectfully.Daniel was excited when his son came back from school, which I’m assuming may have been a deaf school. When he got into business of his own is when, in Daniel’s mind, shit hit the fan.

I just picked up on the “losing the tools in the ground and spend months looking for them” this exact thing happens later in the film.
When does it happen later in the film?
Imagine Daniel Day Lewis as a titular character in a movie set in a post apocolyptic world.
Think about your favorite fictional villain, from books or film. Now imagine them being portrayed by Daniel Day Lewis….

Did Daniel ever loved HW as family , sometimes it seems like he does but he explicitly said that he didn’t
He was lying to save face and push HW away. You can see him flash back to happier times in his mind. He was just totally self destructive by the end.
He starts out using him as a prop, grows to love him, discards him when he becomes a liability, and then grows to hate himself.
