What do you think of the Mali and its leader, Mansa Musa? Are you excited to try this civ in Civilization VI: Gathering Storm?
I could use some coaching from Mansa Musa himself so I can actually afford this expansion!
But for real, this looks like it's shaping up to be my favourite iteration of Civilization yet, keep up the good work everyone ❤️
I think I'm gonna really enjoy playing as him. As I watched the video I felt myself getting more and more hyped about it! He really is the money man

A fitting set of abilities for a man so absurdly rich, he crashed the economies of Mecca, Medina and Cairo through sheer spending while passing through.

Jokes aside I just wish the civilization leader screen and the leaders themselves were a bit more interactive, like it was in Civ V. I like the paintings, but I just prefer the background actually be real. Take for example Darius in Civ V, you see his palace all around him and get a scale of the grandeur of this leader. Or Genghis Khan and Alexander on their horses. If you make deals they don't like, they tell you instead of silently nodding no (Granted Elizabeth actually says no in Civ VI, but most of the other leaders just shake their head).
I would very much like an option for the leader screens to be as they were in Civ V immersive and awe inspiring. The paintings can stay too, maybe have something in the options to switch between both.
Sincerely,
A huge Civ fan.
I think they tried to make up for the lack of settings in the leader screens with more expressive leaders. Like in civ 5 you can tell part of a leaders personality simply by the location you negotiate with them in whereas civ 6 wants your full focus to be on the leaders themselves so many of them have larger personalities than in previous civ games.
Bro I can't declare the war to this guy. Look at him, he's so jolly and rich, you don't want this guy as an enemy for sure.

You know whats thicker than Mansa Musa?
His wallet.
Captured Mali's history and culture very, very well! Not very well known either. But Mansa Musa was an absolutely rich man, Bill Gates is nowhere near him. As someone who's invested and interested in history, this just makes me feel warm and cozy inside knowing y'all addin' such not well known civilizations. Props to the team!
Also to those who don't know much about Mali, in summary they were a trading power with salt and gold deposits abundant in their borders. Which in turn obviously made them absolutely rich. Mansa Musa made the most expensive pilgrimage or trip in history. He literally bought everything from every single bazarr he came across, handed gold dust to commoners. Basically the man was a complete legend, something you can comprehend today.
He crashed the value of gold in the arab world for 10 years as the result of this pilgrimage if if remember correctly. Crashing the value of money by buying too many gifts is just insane
He was in Civ 4 and yes he also had uniques to boost gold bonuses with the mint building. Was a fun civ to play with the skirmisher unique.
He was a Huge patron of learning and Mali was very progressive when it came to women’s rights, religious tolerance, and access to education as well. Not to mention there was a voyage to the New World decades before Columbus (we don’t know if they succeeded). Add the fact his spending helped indirectly contribute to the Renaissance its a wonder he’s not even more famous.
What a bro.
"Not very well known". Dude, the fact he was arguably the richest man who ever lived is pretty much common knowledge. Also, it seems a bit strange that you apparently consider yourself an expert on the matter when you aren't even able to spell his name correctly.
MrSumphora Dude chill. I think people who have an an above average grasp of world history probably knows who he is but while he’s far from the most obscure person featured in this game, I’m not sure the average person would be able to name much about him.
And OP never claimed to be an expert. Don’t be pedantic friends
Mali's leader sent me email yesterday saying I need to give him a small loan of a million dollars and I will receive 4x back once he gets back to his kingdom.
Did you get anything back yet

Also, side note, it's possible that he could be speaking in Fulani (one of the languages spoken in the Mali empire during its heyday)
I love how consistently well themed the Civs are based on their actual real life leaders. Also love how each leader usually brings back their respective wonders like Machu Picchu and (I assume) the Great Mosque of Djenné. Not seeing it here though but it would be sad to miss it out!
I sense a new main on the horizon...

Man you guys are really going hard with the elemental tile bonuses!
I remember when my history class would talk about Mali they’d use his image from CIV IV. Here’s their updated image.
Finally a special commercial hub and a commerce focused civ! However it is a really weird set of bonuses. I have trouble seeing this as an S tier civ. Maybe on a hot map or a North African scenario. You are basically forced into building commerce hubs and holy sites everywhere. It also kinda forces you into religion because that's probably your best win condition. Desert folklore plus the city center faith will mean you have tons of faith that is probably well spend on Jesuit education or the Grandmaster's Chapel.
Nope, this will definitely not be S tier. The combination of desert bias + 30% production penalty for all units and buildings will hurt a lot, especially in the early game. I'm guessing C tier, maybe B
No, you just want to have tons of cash&faith to buy anything you want
no need religion or anything, just buy everything until you win
@@Madmuli dont forget -1 production on mines and there won't be many river lumbermills in the desert.... the build order probably is: Commerce Hub; faith buy market, Holy Site, gold buy shrine and temple, faith purchase follower buidling, campus/theatre square and faith/gold purchase thpse buidlings. You probably never want to build buildings if you can avoid it. Just produce the units you need with the right policy cards and upgrade them using your gold.
@@Madmuli if the 30% production penalty counts for builders and settlers your early game will suck incredibly hard. If you somehow get a classical era golden age you will basically win the game though with monumentality.
Yep, definitely one of the more interesting civs, but for all the gold bonuses, the malus to production seems like a pretty big hit with the nerf bat.
He is gunna be one of the best civs in my opinion you won’t have to plan your victory ahead because you can get any in a shorter amount of time,

@@alonplayminecraft It seems like the Songhai are the Civ5 equivalent of the Mali. They both live in the same region and even have the same unique unit.
@@joseluisprz94 I believe it's would be the same as saying the Byzantine and the ottomans are the same, although they are from the same region and the same cultural region doesn't make them the same, and the leadeers for Mali an Songhai are different as well
@@alonplayminecraft Which is somewhat true except the Songhai and Mali had very similar cultural backgrounds and were of a similar ethnic group within the region unlike with your example. Byzantines associated with Romans and Greeks while the Ottomans were Turkic and had nomadic ancestries, which is different from that of Mali and Songhai. So while not being exactly the same, they fill very similar roles in representing the region of West Africa.

About time! Mansa Musa was one of my favs to play.
Yessss, I’ve been hoping for Mansa Musa since the game came out! And he looks so unique!
This guy was so rich, he went on tour to show the world how rich he was.
“Wow, this guy’s rich” says everyone.
Sure he was rich but there were better ways to spend his nation's gold than giving it away. When he was in the Middle East he could have bought an army of soldiers, scholars, architects, skilled artisans, etc. with him back to Mali rather than just giving gold away and not getting anything back for his fellow countrymen.
Yao Lou yeah. In fact, he spent so much money on souviners at the middle east that he essentially deflated the price of gold and bankrupted three major cities for over a decade.
Imagine that! Being so absurdly rich that you risk crashing the economy by going on a spending spree!
Actually it was his personal Haji (not spelt right) a pilgrimage to Mecca as part of his faith and whereever his caravan stopped he paid to build a Mosque with the absurd amount of wealth he had. Seriously adjusted for Inflation his net worth would’ve been 400 billion 4x that of bill gates!
I love playing as Mali. Almost every AI Civ likes him. But, if someone is stupid enough to attack him, he can just outright buy armies. SURPRISE! Not so defenseless as you were led to believe. It's not uncommon to be making 600-800 gold per turn by the mid game. And he is great in conjunction with the Financier. That Spaceport is going to take how long to build?? Screw that, I'll just buy it.
Finally! They put in canals! I've been asking for this since Civ 4
This is my type of civ!

And considering all the old world civs not yet In the game. I’d be a waste to have 25% of the expansion be Native American
@@gryffith1378 That is a myth, most Native American NATIONS were quite strong before plague wiped them out. We only people think were scattered and fairly weak because A) most setters only met them after they gone through what was basically a apocalypse, and B) Racism. For example the Mississippi Mound Builders (Collective term) where part of a trade network the reached all the way from modern Canada to Central America. NA civs that could be added are the MMB (Illiniwek?), Cherokee, Iroquois, Maya, Olmec, Pueblo, Sioux, Apache, and Nasca; and that is cut out a lot of the more minor/culturally similar civs.
So far the Reddit leak has been completely accurate so probably not this expansion. There’s no native US civ in the game yet so maybe as a DLC. I at least want the Iroquois and the Maya before they roll out Civ 7.
Reminder that immediately after Mansa Musa died the entire kingdom collapsed despite having 2/3rd of the worlds's known gold at the time
If I remember right that was mainly because spain hit mineral wealth HUGE in the new world and thus by passed the african markets
The heir to the throne was very reckless in his spendings. While Mansa Musa’s first pilgrimage was costly, it opened a lot of diplomatic possibilities for trade. Next trips had no such purpose, so they were wastes of money.
@@drewbakka5265 Spain didn't hit new world until 100 years after Munsa's death, and it wasn't until 200 years after Munsa's death that the price revolution occured.

-Unique Unit: Prócer (Replacing Cavalry, +5 on Attack and Defense, Extra Move per turn).
-Unique Building: Universidad Militar (Replacing Military Academy, +10 in Production of new units, increases the culture in the city where it was built).
-Civ's Unique Ability: La Independencia de un Continente (In times of war, increase the attack of any unit, Venezuelan or an ally, that is next to a Prócer; and increases the culture of each liberated city).
-Bolívar's Unique Ability: Libertad del Pueblo (Needs a better name) (Earn additional points in military policy, Golden Age started at the end of a war).
-Bolívar's Agenda: Libertador (Will not hesitate to declare Liberation and Protectorate Wars. Likes civilizations from his home continent and civilizations that declare Liberation Wars. Dislikes monarchical civilizations, civilizations that attack his home continent and civilizations that declare Colonial Wars).
