Sleeping in a Puddle! Tarp Camping in Heavy Rain & Strong Wind 🌧️ Wild Camping UK

- Опубликовано: 29 сен 2024
- This was a slightly mad tarp camp in heavy rain and 45km per hour winds. While the weather was questionable, this mountain lake surrounded with beautiful forest was absolutely magical 😍
I’m so impressed how my bivi bag did, despite all the water coming in and sleeping in a puddle, I stayed completely dry all night
The tarp tent configuration continues to amaze me how sturdy it is - you can learn this config here: • How To set up a Tarp T...
❗ SAFETY: Never use a tarp as your only source of shelter in bad weather - also bring a bivi bag to keep your sleep system dry in case the tarp fails
Thank you so much for watching & have a lovely day! 😊 Much love, Claire 🌿🐻

Hello Wild Ones! Thanks for stopping by this slightly mad lil vid :) Remember if you're gonna try tarp camping in bad weather, always use some form of bivi bag too. It can be fun to test gear & skills if you're comfortable to do so, but never risk hypothermia - your sleep system and overnight clothes must stay dry even if your tarp fails by letting water in or blowing down. It'll also keep any condensation off you during the night. Have a great week! Much love 🌿🐻 ClaireBeare
U r simply adorable n cute !! 😘
What size tarp did you use for your shelter I'm glad you managed to stay warm and dry with the water inside keep up the good content
Fff
F
Hello.please can you advise what make and model of tarp you are using ?
@@unitedtrailbuilders2320 thank you :) it's a DD Superlight, 3m x 2.9m
Brilliant videos, it’s great that you really get stuck in with all different weather conditions. What makes me interested is you actually talk all the way through what your doing, I can’t understand people that make these type of videos when they never say anything and stay completely silent. Keep it up I’m hooked.
Ahh thanks Paul, so glad you like them :) I love both types too, I'm sure they'll be times where I'm not so talkative for whatever reason but just gotta go with what feels natural at the time I guess. I do especially like quiet ones when I'm watching someone work skilfully with their hands for example. Thank you so much for watching my lil videos and hope you have a lovely eve :D 🌿Claire
Oh, Claire!
Such a beautiful and dreamy forest.!
Thanks for the ride.
Hi Lillian, isn't it gorgeous! 💚 Such a magical place. Thank you so much for coming along with me :) 🌿 Claire
Aye up Claire. Impressive. It's calmed down now...I got wet just coming home yesterday and needed to dry out. Last night rattled the windows and doors. Love a good storm blows away negative energies. Good camp Claire and video thanks for posting
I would be so grumpy sleeping in those conditions and you look so happy and grateful to be there. Quite humbling. Lovely video. 😊
thats a awesome set up you had there Claire and for the flooding that is what happens when you camp right next to the water Me Lovely 👍👌🙂❤🥰
I love your style. I live in southern Snowdonia, right by Cadair Idris, and this is exactly the kind of shenanigans I get up to, except there's never any evidence of mine!
That style of tarp (the camo groundsheet) never gives me confidence when it's under pressure. I strongly recommend a 3F UL/Flame's Creed 'mini tarp' off AliExpress. It's light as a feather (about 160g) and made of 15D silnylon, like the original Lanshans. I bought one for about £6, and when it arrived I was so impressed I bought another as a spare immediately. It's also great for setting up a mini shelter for tea/snacks/rest when your main shelter is overkill.
Again, great video. Take it easy!
Looks like so much fun. I miss the opportunity to get out into the great outdoors for adventures like this. I’ll keep watching.
Oh flashbacks. Wales? Winter? Rain? Sleeping under a basha, rivers of mud running through your doss bag, listening to the wind and rain batter the tarp? Do that for four weeks on the trot and ‘Welcome to the British Army’. It’s effing miserable, but enjoyable at the same time. A sort of self flagellation. As for nothing to do at night in the rain, go on a Close Recce Patrol (CRP) surely?
Anyway, great to see you enjoying yourself. Hard to explain to people how amazing it is to sleep under a basha. Tent? Pah. Single tarp and that’s it. And better still, when not raining, a bivvie bag under the stars will do. Epic. 🙌
I've only just discovered your channel, and I'm genuinely jazzed about it. 😁 Thanks for sharing! Carry on! 👍
Ahh yay! Welcome to my lil channel :D 🤗
Wow i think you did amazing Claire!!!
What a hellish night but you should be so proud of yourself, if you can put a tarp up to endure weather like that then you can handle any UK situation. Driving rain can be dangerous if you are wet through! Glad you were clever with your layering and down bag. Mega impressed I couldn't do that now (53) Go Girl !!!!
Aw thanks so much, yep deffo, it would have been a disaster if it weren't for the bivi bag - love that thing! :D
Well done & good choice of bivy!:)
Chào Bạn ! Cảm ơn đã chia sẽ. Cắm trại trong trời mưa to & gió mạnh 🌧️ Chúc bình an vui vẻ thành công. 👍🌿🌻 like
Thanks for the video it’s great. Peace
Great little video Claire. Tarp did good there. Was a bit worried for you when I saw that water all on the ground. Nothing worse than being cold and wet on a camp. Glad it went ok. Great location and tarp configuration. ATB Dan 👍
Thanks Dan, the tarp held up like a champ but the bivi bag really saved the day, would have been pretty disastrous without it😬 thanks for stopping by and wishing you a wonderful weekend :) 🌿Claire
Proper camping Claire
I wonder if you wouldn't have done better a bit further from the lake?
It's nice to see someone tarp camping in bad weather instead of sunny and dry or cold and white.
That looks like a real night spent in bad weather with a good spirit!
Thank you.
I know, right!
I've never been to the UK, hell never been anywhere but you sure find the most amazing landscapes! And the weather!! You were definitely prepared down to the last piece of gear and the tarp set up. That tarp maker should put you in their commercials!
Now that was definitely some wet and wild weather there for sure! Your tarp setup (as well as yourself of course) definitely handled it all very well though. I must say that I have been enjoying your videos immensely since recently discovering your channel! Consider me a new subscriber :)
Heyy aw yay, welcome to my li channel :) thanks so much and hope you have a lovely weekend 🌿Claire
@@WildBeare You're more than welcome Claire :) I hope that you have a lovely weekend as well. Cheers... -John
A decent bivvy bag is a life saver. I was in the army on exercise in Poland when my motorcycle broke down in the middle of nowhere. As it was the start of the main battle manoeuvre I wasn't going to be recovered for 24 hours. As you probably guessed it absolutely honked it down. Fortunately I had a tarp and my bivvy bag. It was the first uninterrupted 8 hour sleep in 6 weeks!
Well totally barking, but you are out there which is more than I am ! - cool !
1st🤘🦡🦡🦡
I tend to avoid setting up directly next to the water when possible as the air is more damp.
If you build a "lip" or something similar on the uphill side of the ground cloth the water will pass under it rather than over it. No bivvy needed that way.
Then again, I prefer a hammock under a tarp when flooding is likely.
Wet lands need to be avoided always, look to the high ground/mounds
What a spot to tarp camp, if the weather was better. Good in ya though Claire 😉
Kudos to you Claire, I remember over a year ago when you had fer and anxiety about campin by yourself. Now being a seasoned wild camper who has done it. Yea! , you are bloody marvelous. Many many cheers & hugs , Sweetie.
Ahh, thanks Peter! 🤗 Hope you're having a lovely week :)
Does anything stop you smiling and being so cheerful.
You are a tonic to watch.
Is that Johnson & Johnson powder that you are using? It might be advisable to do a little research on it. Great video and I have the same tarp, pretty bomb proof if the wind does not change direction.
I've had a few nights where I ended up sleeping in a puddle, not fun at all. Luckily every time was in the summer so I didn't freeze to death. If something happened like that in sub 60F weather, I'd honestly pack up and go home.
Yeh it would have been disastrous if I didn't have the bivi bag.. I'm pretty sure I could sleep in a bath in that thing and stay dry 😄
Being in Snowdonia I was surprised to hear you say it was February, it looked like July 😀, it's great to see someone show how it is in bad weather, and how good preparation can make a bad situation quite comfy, I always advise people who have never camped in any way in a bad situation do it in a safe environment for the first few times, camp next to the car or very close, if it goes wrong safety is close by, just bail to the car and sort it out in the morning.
And then do it again until you are comfortable with your setup, then you can go on a journey knowing if the weather turns bad it's not a problem,
Take care, big hugs to North Wales, ❤☕
Nige.
Hey Nige! I agree, that's great advice, I often still do this myself when trying out new things (staying fairly close to the car in case I need to bail). Haha yeh, to be fair it seems to look like this in Snowdonia whenever I go 😄😄 thanks so much for watching and have a lovely eve 🌿Claire
Hi Clare. Found your channel a couple of months ago and am really impressed with the way you challenge and push yourself on these adventures. So much fun watching you learn new skills. Keep it up and carry on enjoying life and our wild places.
Hi Mal, thanks so much and welcome to my lil channel :) yehh I love to learn and gain experience, one day I might catch some nice weather 😄 have a lovely weekend! 🌿Claire
Just watched a few of your videos . This one when you used the tarp I tend to put my sleeping bag in my bivi bag so not to get it wet (old army trick) .like you show your progress keeping it all simple & achievable
Done a lot of camping trips in the rain 🌧 but only ever used my Tarp as an extension to my tent so I can sit out and enjoy my coffee and cook etc , but as I camp using my motorcycle to carry everything I don’t have to worry about weight I really enjoyed your vlog interesting to see how you use the tarp I’ve learned a good little tip there thanks 🙏
Aw great, glad you enjoyed it :) Funny you should mention as in my next video I'm using a small tarp over my tent in this way. Made it much easier to cook in the rain. Have a great week and happy camping! 🌿Claire
Good you're camping anywhere near Bristol today, because we're currently having 90 mph winds
...but then again. why would you camp near bristol haha
Yay... the drone has also returned!!! Always, always enjoy these lil adventures Claire, 👍
Yayy Bilbo the drone is in the house :D I'm loving flying again, hope this one lasts a while 😬😄 Thank you so much for watching and hope you have a lovely week :) 🌿Claire
Super~what a cool sharing,have a good day!👏
Can I ask what tarp you used and what size was it please.
Keep posting your videos so inspirational 👏😎
You are such a joy to watch. So pleasant to “be around“. ✌🏽
Ahh yay, thank you so much 😊🤗 have a lovely weekend!
Tough lady, love how you like the rain and wind. I used to go mainly in the winter with snow. It is just so silent. BTW love your hair ❤.
We had puddles appearing over night by a river and it wasn’t even raining. Luckily they stayed away from our tents. One of the hazards of camping near water I guess. I wouldn’t have been happy in that situation so well done for sticking with it. Great video. 👍
Mm yeh, seemed to be coming up from below. Thank you, I was quite happy in my bivi bag although it was a bit awkward trying to do everything else like lean over to cook dinner while balancing on it 😄Thanks for watching and have a lovely eve :) 🌿 Claire
What bivi bag you using claire....done the job....anything by carinthia is awesome quality...or ex mil if you dont mind the weight......can i challenge you to tarp...stonewall bivvy.....Old infantry saying travel light cold at night😁
What a challenge. Good to see that the tarp 'cave' can stand up to those conditions. Loved the drone footage too! Thank you Claire for taking us on another good adventure.
Thanks Catherine, the tarp tent always amazes me what it can hold up to :) and nice to be flying a drone again, hopefully this one will last a bit longer than the previous haha 😬Thanks so much for watching and have a lovely eve! 🌿💚 Claire
love the channel! only wish the videos were longer :)
Thank you so much :) there will be some longer ones coming this year hopefully, I'm going to try putting my future multi-night trips into one video going forward, instead of splitting them up. Have a lovely weekend! 🌿Claire
@@WildBeare thanks for replying wild one :) i love wild camping too now!
My brother and I did a trip here in the US that ended up with a constant soaking rain like what you experienced. I'm impressed with how well that bivi bag did sleeping directly in water. I'm still a fan of hammocking, but a better drybag system is definitely a must.
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the most positive person in the universe. Well done.
Great videos always. I love the tarp tent setup. Its roomy and holds up to a lot of weather. Great use of dry bags too.
Your videos are always fun, enjoyable and quite relaxing.
I use a different groundsheet to you. I use one of the triple layer emergency blankets that's 5x7 foot, silver on one side, green on the other. I've never had water seep through it like yours did. They are only about £10-£15.
Heyy, thank you so much :) They're so roomy aren't they! I think I'm gonna try a suspended one next time so that I can loose the centre pole, be like a palace :D
Just had a look at those triple layer emergency blankets, they look fab!! I've never had an issue with my current one til now, while it's fine on most ground it's not completely watertight apparently 😄 I might try one of those thank you
Cheers for stopping by and hope you have a lovely weekend :) 🌿Claire
Good effort on getting out on the hill and gettin amongst it I noticed you had all your gear laid out like your at home an cozy I'm an x Royal Marine an there's a saying if your not using it stow it away if the shit hits the fan you don't wanna be grabbing running scrambling to find your kit which you've got laid out everywhere so stow it away also a pair of plimsolls are handy incase you need to get out your bag when nature calls...and never pitch so close to a rivers edge there could be flash floods an you get swept away...crack on an hopefully might see you on the hill
Claire, your videos are so enjoyable. Love the music, the beautiful scenery, and the creative things you try.
Aw yay thanks so much Dan :) so glad you like them, I love to film them and put them together. This was such a beautiful place, despite the weather 😄Have a lovely eve! 🌿Claire
Thanks for the video!! I always sleep well in the rain 🌧 stay warm and safe !! Just puddles love it !!
Great video Claire. I was planning to go for a cheeky wild camp close to my home in the Surrey Hills on Saturday night (first of the year), but the weather is looking awful. You’ve reminded me watching this how much I love it but also how wet, wet can be! I’ll give it a miss and maybe stay in the warm and dry instead. Keep up the great videos and all the best.
Hi Mike, yep I don't blame you at all 😄Hope you have a cosy weekend, and happy adventuring for when you fancy getting out again :) Thanks so much for watching my lil vid & have a lovely eve 🌿Claire
I really don't understand how you made that look pleasant, but you did. lol. Enjoy, and thx for the vids.
The way you stay so positive in such wet conditions 👍🙂
Thanks ☺
That was definitely a wet night but agree dry bags every time.this bad weather is starting to get on my nerves now lol sat watching this as storm Dudley batters us lol
Aloha Claire, wow man, good job you can swim, haha. That was a rainy old adventure. Just goes to show that whatever the weather you can still have super fun and enjoy the outdoors. Your tarp held up fine, no worries, very impressive. Thank you for these vids, they show us there is fun and adventure to be had everywhere at anytime. Take care and be well, Aloha, Simon from Bristol xx
Hey Simon! Ahh thanks :) good ol' tarp tent has never let me down yet, seems to be able to take a bit of weather, which still surprises me for a square piece of fabric. I do enjoy the bad weather but I'm also hoping one of these days I'll get a nice weather trip, a sunset or something like that. I swear they exist because I've seen photos 😄 Thank you so much for watching my lil vid. Hope you're good and having a lovely week :) 🌿Claire
Aloha Claire, yeah sunsets do exist, i too have seen lovely pictures, haha. Hopefully won’t be that long until the warmer weather shows it’s face. Should be some great times ahead, and as you have shown us they can be found anytime anywhere, just get out in the woods and there you go. Thanks for the reply. Have a great week, Aloha, Simon xx
Why would you set up right by a lake at the lowest point of the terrain? That's where all the water will flow to from higher ground. Great video though. Very tough night for you .
How joyful is that intro! The puddle you see once you remove the tarp is crazy, such a nice location though, if it wasn't so wet, would you have had a dip? You never stop smiling! Great camera work and music too🤘🏞💪
Hi Paul! Ahh yay glad you like the intro, I loved putting that together :D Yehh it was pretty soggy! Seemed to be coming up from below. I was planning on having a dip for this one but was put off by the wind, it would have been unpleasant afterward the way it was blowing about. I deffo would have if it had been still, even in the rain would have been lovely, since I was already drenched wouldn't have made much of a difference haha. Thank you so much for watching and hope you have a lovely eve :) 🌿Claire
The video seems to show you slightly down hill from a big flat area? Not the best place to put a tent, never mind a tarp. Solid advice at the end though
Wow, so brave to tackle that weather. Good for you Claire. Such an inspiration to us learners 👍👏
Aw thank you Dave, it was good fun and the bivi bag saved the day :D thanks for watching & have a lovely weekend :) Claire
Its bad enough here in Bucks, I couldn't imagine how crap it must be in Wales.
Some points to consider:
Never set up a camp near water, as there is free space for the wind to move fast over open water, set up a camp i the forest behind bushes, trees etc. ie: out of the wind and partly out of the rain.
The tents opening must be in the lee side, not in the wind to overlook a lake! Use a layer of spruce, fir or thuja branches on the "floor" as a kind of insulation and padding for a bed during the night.
In the wintertime a light fishnet or similar under the tarp makes a sort of a way to tie spruce, fir or similar branches to create some form of insulation as the heat loss is minimized during a night.
A micro light aluminum sheet keeps your warm during a cold night. Keeps your socks etc. dry and easy to find next morning.
The Swedish Trangia alcohol burner is very slow and of little use, a gas bottle with the standard 7/16" thread last a long time and easy/safe to use, dig a square hole 30-40cm deep at the lowest point of the shelter and place the burner here, still have the fire hazard in mind. As the burner is lower in the ground, there is a little risk to be scalded and the heat from the fire find its way into the tent and out at higher side of the tent, thus heating the tent a bit.
Good luck!
HM.
Nice work! that looked miserable. Good job keeping a positive attitude!
Why put your tent in the reeds, next to a river, in a lengthy rain storm?
Sounds like a really bad idea.
Well claire you super star. You made it through the night again. Your video's are brilliant and you are brilliant too. Thank you for sharing with us. Stay blessed
I use a mylar space blanket under my mat as well as the ground sheet. Really helps mitigate the water ingress.
"Unless you're a maniac" 😄
Beautiful British weather! lol
Really nice 👍
I also do camping in uk
But with my ebike))
Nice one Claire. You say a lot of Irish sounding things, any influence there?
You know them wings you fold back and peg out near the door can be strung back to one of the other pegging out points to the rear of the tarp tent which makes it a lot sleeker with less to trip over
Daring and insightful
Good video, when you packed up it looked like you were right in a puddle! Your tarp certainly held up , I was surprised that water came through your ground cover, 🙏😄🎩
Wow the cinematography in this video is the best I've seen on RUclips, and I watch a lot of wild camping videos. Well done!
Well done, the tarp tent is my go to choice of shelter, but I don't use a ground sheet just my poncho under my kit and and the military folding pad under my sleep system, never had much of a puddle problem but have dug a drainage ditch when forced to camp on low ground in heavy rain
Thanks :) a few people have mentioned ponchos, I may have to look into one. Have a great weekend! 🌿Claire
This was in my recommended cause I watch allot of rain camping videos and This is so perfect love it. Subbed!
Aw yay, glad you like it and welcome to my lil channel :) 🌿Claire
@@WildBeare 🤙🤙
Just doesn't look like a fun thing to do, each to their own.
Vegetation is usually indicative of boggy areas.
Sleeping in a puddle 🤣 You make it sound so appealing . . .
Well done !
You could have kept fish in there ..
Well done. What a trooper. I love a tarp tent. I take an umbrella too. It mages a great door, if you're not superstitious 😂 Wouldn't help the wet ground though 👍
My hero well stuck out most would have packed up
At least you stayed dry. That's what I would call mushy ground. Thanks for sharing and stay well. Love the way you say Water!
Woohoo.. its another Wildbeare vid x
I read the title and said to myself, “I’ll cold water swim; but I won’t sleep in a puddle, no matter what health benefits she cites.” 😄😄
Amazing video my friend 👍 Thank you very much for sharing 😊
The things you do for us and being cute AF doing it! Thank you!
Hello Claire...l had an experience somewhat similar to yours, about 25 years ago.
I remember that camping trip as if it was only last season. It is true that the trips that seemed the most horrible at the time, become the most memorable and fantastic as the memories age.
You are a true outdoors person, good onya!
So much water, so much water, it's the land of water where you live, I get chills. Que d'eau que d'eau , c'est le pays de l'eau ou tu habite , j'en ai des frissons .
Another corker! Tuff lass!
I enjoyed your video and good Luck.
That looked crazy. Can I ask where you was do you have what3words
I love LLyn Elsi, tough climb up, but not too long, please go again in the summer, it’s beautiful. Thank you Claire, always inspire my legs to head for the hills 😊👍🏽♥️🏕
Hi Chris, it's just magical isn't it! 💚 I deffo hope to go back in the summer. Thank you so much for watching and hope those legs take you out soon :) 🌿Claire
No idea how nothing phases you
Two thumbs up for a job well done. Camping in the rain takes a good deal of grit. Been there, done that. It's a real measure of who you are and what you're made of. Loverly stuff. Carry on camper. Cheers from Montreal QC (where the temperature is still around -15C).
Get a tent with a bathtub floor, bug net and rain fly. My Big Agnes is 2.5 pounds and it's always dry in her, no bugs or snakes.
That tarp and bivy must be a lot heavier
Brings up memories! I love to sleep in a tent outside in storm and rain. Makes me feel more real me. Always take care of your feet and beware of cystitis (my former girlfriend had it, when we were out and it was brutally painfull!) Greets from germany (yeah, I know, we are much to direct, dont take it bad)
I used to have one of the old 58 pattern British army sleeping bags with the water resistant bottoms. Slept in many a puddle in that thing and always stayed nice and dry. They're great, just very bulky.
👍👍👍 .. Brave Girl .. Bully for You .. a really enjoyable watch 😊.
Yep, 'Mad Dogs and Englishmen DON'T just go out in the Midday Sun' 😁.
Preparation is the Name of the Game .. AND having an Escape Plan.
A nice comprehensive Gear List .. thanks for that
Take care .. stay dry ...
That looked a bit rough but you tackled it like a real professional, well done you, I bet you learned some valuable lessons there. What Evers next should be easy. 👍💜☮🙂
Ey up 👍…. Brilliant video…. I was interested in this because i have this tarp ready to try in the better weather ha….. As you say it stood up well to the battering …. Well done enduring such a wet and windy one…. Great channel 👍👍👍
Great vid 👍. What a lovely place ( in the nice weather 😂) . Love using a tarp and bivvy. Glad you made it through th night. Take care 👌
Total legend!
Always so positive.
