  • Mike Graham is joined by Grammy award-winning music producer Steve Lillywhite to explain and theorise the rumoured feud between Pink Floyd members Roger Waters and David Gilmour.
Steve says he thinks the drama started when the band were trying to sell the future rights of their catalogue of music and disagreed on the value of it.

if they both want money, they would tour as Pink Floyd together

This is a simple case where Waters (who wrote the lyrics) can't stand Gilmour singing his words. Very similar to why Simon and Garfunkel broke up. Paul Simon admitted he hated Art Garfunkel singing Bridge over Troubled Water.

It's not even fair to say "Roger Waters wrote the lyrics" For the majority of Pink Floyd albums, he wasn't writing their lyrics. He only wrote "most of the lyrics" on 5 Pink Floyd albums out of a total of 15 studio albums. On 2/3rds of the albums he wasn't the main lyric contributor.

Pretty sure Waters wrote all the lyrics on 5 albums and is the main lyricist on... lets see 1...2... 3... 4... 5! others (OBC, More, Ummagumma, Meddle, SOS) So that would be the majority of albums and songs with lyrics at that.
Gilmour is the main lyricist on what? Momentary Lapse maybe? (though he got help) On Division Bell it was likely his wife... Syd is the main lyricist on Piper... On Atom Heart Mother Rick Roger & David each write one.... It's not even close.

Roger isn't a singer? I would disagree. My favorite PF songs are mostly sung by him: Sheep, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Brain Damage / Eclipse (off Dark Side Of the Moon) etc... He's one of the two main singers, so he sings on a lot of Floyd tracks.
There's nothing wrong with having a different, more modern interpretation of Dark Side by an original member. He's never said it's meant to replace or surpass the original. I'm looking forward to hearing it. I'm sure I'll enjoy it, and still love the original, too.

His voice is awful sounding. Roger Waters never would have gone anywhere in life without Syd Barrett, David Gilmour, and Rick Wright. He rode their coattails.

Roger should have got William Shatner to do the vocal. Smoking of course. Bit weird having Captain Gated Drum, who created that awful Haties noise, talking about his polar opposite.

David Gilmour (and to a lesser extent Richard Wright) was the main musical contributor; and Roger Waters was the lyricist. When balanced/combined they made fantastic stuff. Separately (Rogers solo stuff or post Roger Pink Floyd) it just doesn’t measure up. And the acrimony and ego is sad but not surprising.

Roger Waters ran out of good song lyrics many years before he quit Pink Floyd. He's been completely washed up since 1979. He didn't leave Pink Floyd until 1985. They got back on track as a band after he quit.

@@CoolhandLukeSkywalkr I don't think the facts support your claims. He was clearly the main lyricist for DSOTM, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall, The Final Cut (which is what MOST people know Pink Floyd for) and then the dominant lyricist for More, Meddle, and Obscured by Clouds and likely had most contribution on Atom Heart Mother and Ummagumma. He clearly DIDN'T write most or any of the lyrics on Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Momentary Lapse of Reason and Division Bell. Many of their post Syd Barrett/pre Dark Side albums were heavily instrumental (e.g., Saucerful of Secrets, Ummagumma, More, etc.) and 2 of them are film soundtracks so....Put differently - name your top 10 Pink Floyd songs and ask "who wrote the lyrics". I'm not a big fan of Roger Waters; but the facts are what they are.

@@chacob3380 On all of the earlier albums, Roger usually would just sing one song. It used to be that all the band members would write a song for the albums. For example, Childhood's End, Fat Old Sun, and The Narrow Way were the best songs on those three Pink Floyd albums, and those were the songs written by David Gilmour. I don't think Roger Waters even plays on any of those tracks.

@@thedave5748 I think Waters is usually right on foreign policy issues (or at least much better than our media / governments in the west), but on Ukraine-Russia I actually think he's trying to be in the middle way too much by arguing fault on both sides, though it's still a much better position to hold than attributing all the blame to Russia. I actually think Russia is much more in the right, myself as Lugansk & Donetsk should have a right to self defense and by extension a right to get help from the Russians to defend themselves against the proxy army of NATO in Ukraine.
