This is the first episode in a new series on this channel, "Crazy But True: Business Stories That Feel Like Movies". It tells the full story of WhatsApp, but framed around one key question: How Does WhatsApp REALLY Make Money? I hope you enjoy. 😁 EDIT: Wow, thank you for all the comments & support! Just wanna address some concerns that I saw a couple of people ask: 1. "Are you sponsored by Signal?" No. I am in no way affiliated with Signal whatsoever, and don't even have the app myself. There are lots of other alternatives to Signal, I only mentioned it because it seemed to have very positive perceptions in online privacy communities (plus it's part of the story, since it was created by the original WhatsApp founder). 2. "Why are you advertising a VPN?" - A VPN is not some magic pill to all privacy issues, but personally I believe you're better to have a VPN (from a trusted provider) than not. But you don't necessarily NEED one; you can research it and decide for yourself. They didn't pay me to say anything (I just used an affiliate link in the description to an established VPN). 3. "There's nothing wrong with Whatsapp" - Whatsapp IS a great service. If you go to the end of the video, you'll see that I do say MOST companies collect your data for all kinds of reasons. For many people, continuing to use WhatsApp is totally fine. Really, it comes down to how much you trust Facebook. Clearly the original founders don't, but I am not saying you need to delete Whatsapp. I just think its worth being aware of the story behind it all. I hope you enjoy! True, and good point you make. The problem is the US doesn't have such stringent data protection privacy laws and regulaton over companies and orgs as we have in Europe which makes it totally illegal to collect and use peoples private data, unless you're transparent about that, registered and authorised to do it by the government, and crucially give people the right to see what data you're holding and using...and of course, the right to have your data deleted at any time. Hmm. Often not true in the modern age. I pay for LinkedIn, Microsoft outlook. No communication, customer service or any type of engagement. My whole depends on both of these and I can never have a conversation with them never mind demands
@@liamburns8554 how does paying for LinkedIn benefit one if I may ask? As far as I know it’s for professionals to get contacted, or contact other people who work for other companies, etc. like a Facebook for résumés. So what do you actually pay for, and how is it beneficial?
You’ve made really incredible videos and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed them. The amount of research you put into them is pretty incredible. Keep up the awesome work!
@Rafael Lima - with this channel I'm not really trying to just answer questions, I'm also trying to tell stories and make mini-documentaries. This video is the story of Whatsapp - the question of how they make money is just one (key) part of that. So if you are only looking for short simple answers, this is probably not the right channel for you. But I do think it's very unfair to say that the whole thing can be summarised as 'whatsapp doesn't make money' - that's really not true at all. Its certainly more complex than that.
Gotta say man, you and your team put together videos so well. So much thought, so many details that I wouldn't even doubt you missed any. Thank you for this, another push for me to delete my Facebook. Im a new subscriber but damn I wish I found your content sooner! Thank you Downloading Signal right now 🙌

@@andrewdubois8653 it's not Facebook. It's Google's ad service. Google is collecting your data and using that information to target ads on any website that uses Google ad service.
very true. my sister and i were speaking about a product which she didnt even search for but it came up as an advert on her social media. since then we were like ''is our phones listening to our convos as well''
I think the only thing that would teach the monopoly tech giants a massive lesson and allow people to take control again would be if there was a co-ordinated switch off by users around the world. I mean a universal account cancellation for a whole year... But it will never happen. Most people are oblivious to the peril of big data and how it guides and shapes consumer decisions and opinions... They just love the ease and convenience and connectivity and don't care enough
Actually in my country we don't even have services that allow you to pay by the internet, we solely depend on free apps and it is has huge impact on our communities, so that would never happen because we don't have substitutes.
Buddy don't be childish, you won't be able to convince even 10% of users, people know that facebook is evil, but they don't have a choice, i can switch to Signal right now but what good this would do? I would be alone without no one to talk about, or anything to do, you guys need to be realistic and face the problem here. Billions of people use WhatsApp daily for everything, even to pay their bill the system simply is too useful and too valuable to be switched. Also what platform would be used to propagate Signal or other platform? Even to this people use WhatsApp. Truth is the only way to make a full switch you need to stop the whole system for at least a weak, im talking about basically blow up all servers used by Facebook, possibly even some satellites a supercomputers. Or then wait for Suckerborg make a mistake like add ad's directly into the chat, this would at some point get so annoying that people would definitely switch to other platforms.
When it comes to privacy I, as a 36 year old have really never known "true privacy" since I hit my early to mid 20s. When I was a kid in the mid to late 90s....privacy was still possible. However as my generation came of age and algorithms became king privacy started to become something that "used to be." I don't really see much of an issue here as a regular person. However if I were running a big enough business or if I was working on very secretive projects I certainly would want to be much more careful with my information. It all comes down to each individual what we deem acceptable for ourselves in terms of privacy and risk.

Just implement a feature to chat cross platform, just like how email works. I recently heard the EU is planning to impose that rule and I hope it does and everyone follows. There might be drawbacks (maybe) but it would make switching much easier
I think the main controversy with selling data is WHAT data theyre selling. If I am just an anonymous person and all theyre doing is saying to companies "we will advertise to people in this age range with this income level in these parts of the world" then I dont see the harm in them having my data. In fact it caters to me because it helps me find things I may actually be interested in buying. But, if facebook starts selling truly personal data outside of demographics, like my name, email, phone number, etc etc then theyve gone too far. I should be a member of a target audience for advertising, not a product for them to sell.
We have always been the product whether to market to in order to entice to buy or, now, as consumable goods we have become since our metrics are being bought and sold. We are slaves at the market and most don’t realize…🥸
Simply amazing content. I have been subscribed for reletavily a short time but I gotta say it hurts to see that your videos don't get as many views as they should. Very underrated.
What annoys me is that there is no option to pay. I would gladly pay for a RUclips, Google or Facebook that does not collect my data but that simply does not exist.
They collect your data to predict your future decisions based on your past decisions and in order to influence your choice, not only commercially but political and socially
It's also because a lot of people have it and having to download ANOTHER application just to use for one specific person isn't something people want to do
@@qpSubZeroqp true that. I use LINE, which is popular in Asia. One of my best friends will not use LINE like the rest of our friend group. I won’t download WhatsApp after being asked by acquaintances who use it. I don’t want another texting app for people not family or close friends.
I'm surprised he was even allowed to make Signal at all. Usually, when you make a sale like this, the contract includes a non-competition clause that makes it illegal for you to just turn around and use the money to make a new identical business.
Because it doesn’t matter. Despite being in the age with the easiest access to knowing basically whatever you want people just don’t care to actually know or if they do don’t know how to actually find the information they actually want.
Wow! It's wickedly honest in its view and opinion. Very interesting way of putting in the best picture of a subject. Please make more of this video. Thanks.
I have been using the internet since 1995 and I am sure my stupid data is all over the place. In 2023, has this in any way shape of form changed anything for me? The answer is absolutely fooking no.
Yeah but what they're really doing is making lists of who will be a compliant slave and who is willing to fight tyranny. That way they can purge all of the fighters in the first 72 hours and hunt down the few remaining ones while the compliant slaves just look on stunned and fearful. That's by far the most useful application of user data to those who desire money, power and control.

It's double edged sword. Compromised privacy perhaps does help people to stay in contact, run businesses, do whatever they are doing, even perhaps it may help to catch some criminals and bad guys in some extreme cases - but it also allows for control over masses in the grand scheme of things. At this point it's moral conundrum whatever it's ultimately a good or bad thing to have. But still the main point is, that everyone should decide for themselves if they want that. It is great to have and watch such movie, as well as other ones on this channel, great work!
In Mexico, a lot of local mobile data plans are “pay as you go”. Facebook , WhatsApp, instagram doesn’t go against you data. In a depressed economy, people will use what is free. It’s easy to buy the smallest possible data plan and mostly use these services that don’t use that data. It helps people out in a way, but it’s also a little evil.
You make the most awesome videos. I started watching you the past few days that I started to skip forensic files I like how you get all your research done and make it very interesting to learn about. I can’t wait to see more videos.
Funny how I deleted my WhatsApp account and uninstalled the app recently. I know my data is probably still in their database but really I want to be more data conscious now. John you're psychic! 💛
I know it seems odd but my biggest issue is with the contacts harvesting. I have numbers on my phone that I specifically am not allowed to give to other people, but companies like Facebook, in fact any company that uses advertising on their webpage automatically takes that contact list ( legally via cookies). I object strongly to this practice. None of my "smart" devices contain a "contact" list specifically for this reason. The only device I have with a contact list is an old Nokia that doesn't connect to the net.
@@fredcarr3550 Cookies are automatically put onto a device as soon as you activate an app or visit a website. In the case of a smart device, some apps set themselves to activate after a device is turned on/reset. At that point, it'll do what it'll do and if there's a contact list on the phone and it has permission (heck, even without permission) it can do something with all that information.
I can't believe you're amazing channel hasn't exploded yet, hopefully it would be as soon as possible, but regardless please keep up the amazing work, truly amazing content 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
I agree with this video and whilst I value my privacy in general, the convenience WhatsApp offers in general is undeniable. In terms of targeted ads, they’re not inherently wrong, but the exploitation of user data WITHOUT consent IS. This is the principle reason why Facebook is regarded with such vitriol and why I personally hate the company (now called Meta lol). As for ads, I find it funny when Facebook promotes stuff to me lol. NONE of the ads persuade me and I’ve NEVER purchased anything directly as a result of them. Individuals need only be more vigilant and diligent about what they choose to do when they vote with their wallets.
Hmm you have a bit of a wrong impression about how marketing works. It's not always a direct thing - see and buy right away - but exposing people to a brand is very effective. I mean, think of it as a billboard that you keep seeing while you're driving. An ad is valuable in terms of reach. Im not really sure what people mean when they say they are concerned with their privacy... to me privacy is like... nobody watching me shower and sing embarrassingly bad. Having my phone number or the fact that I clicked on an ad for shampoo in 2012 doesn't seem to be in the same level there. I mean, the things I want to keep private I simply won't give them, if I did give it... then thats probably because I dont care about it.
It's interesting, my aunt-a software engineer-tried to get me to use WhatsApp years ago, and I balked. Something about it never sat right with me. My dad's a software engineer too and he won't use it. He's always been a bit paranoid about privacy so I took that into account. And now we're here.
I agree on the last part. In South Africa today, if you work & have just one account (clothing or credit card), you get about 7 call per business day selling you loans & credit cards😩 & it has gotten worse after covid pandemic!!!

Or if we talk about going on a trip, for the next few days to weeks we’ll get ads about whole a** states and countries and it’s like wtf I didn’t even know they made an ad for Iowa, why tf does Iowa need an add.. (this one could be coincidental because of how common these ads are but, but we’ve started to notice every time we say “you hungry?” “I could eat” our normal responses.. if we’re on Hulu unless it just went on commercial it will go to commercial within 30 seconds and ALWAYS show a food restaurant. I mean literally without fail, we’ve started stopping after we ask that and stare at the TV and watch and count, it’s like a game that’s super terrifying in the back of your mind.)
And what about the political and social movements they want to promote? We all are classified and managed according to our ideologies and the social change they want to do...

Wow thanks for the support Sleepy Wolf - great channel yourself!
Wise words - thanks man!

I think the only thing that would teach the monopoly tech giants a massive lesson and allow people to take control again would be if there was a co-ordinated switch off by users around the world. I mean a universal account cancellation for a whole year... But it will never happen.

Back when MSN messenger was defacto, it was actually proposed to do the same, and the XMPP was born
But how may that help? First person using whatsapp, second signal... and still data (based on messages) could be collecting by whatsapp.
Just assume they are selling more than they tell you...basically everything
We have always been the product whether to market to in order to entice to buy or, now, as consumable goods we have become since our metrics are being bought and sold. We are slaves at the market and most don’t realize…🥸

Well I had a couple of ads during the video.
What annoys me is that there is no option to pay.
I would gladly pay for a RUclips, Google or Facebook that does not collect my data but that simply does not exist.
They collect your data to predict your future decisions based on your past decisions and in order to influence your choice, not only commercially but political and socially
You cannot afford the present value of future profits they will earn from having you on the free version!
They'd do it and still take your money.
It does exist for Meta, at least in Europe.
The price would be WAY more than you could afford. Your data is worth thousands.
WhatsApp will always be used because it’s the impact it created, people can’t go back once something better comes

I guess they knew Signal would never be a threatening competition
Im thinking it's a marketing ploy to fool the likes of EU should they ever end up on monopoly charges again

I suggest you clear cookies and searches daily on your computer i-phone or tablet.

Talk about playing the insane long game
I agree with this video and whilst I value my privacy in general, the convenience WhatsApp offers in general is undeniable. In terms of targeted ads, they’re not inherently wrong, but the exploitation of user data WITHOUT consent IS. This is the principle reason why Facebook is regarded with such vitriol and why I personally hate the company (now called Meta lol).
As for ads, I find it funny when Facebook promotes stuff to me lol. NONE of the ads persuade me and I’ve NEVER purchased anything directly as a result of them. Individuals need only be more vigilant and diligent about what they choose to do when they vote with their wallets.
you can make that argument about any messaging app that is widely used...in regards to the convenience part.
If you were that smart you would know that it is not about ads anymore since more than 10 years, "lol". Good luck then
Hmm you have a bit of a wrong impression about how marketing works.
I never get adds , what am i doing ? Also ad block means i never see adds for you tube etc
Give me convenience or give me death.
I never see ads because I do everything in a browser where is it trivial to block ads and trackers.
It's interesting, my aunt-a software engineer-tried to get me to use WhatsApp years ago, and I balked. Something about it never sat right with me. My dad's a software engineer too and he won't use it. He's always been a bit paranoid about privacy so I took that into account.
