It had been a bad week for Evan Spiegel. His business idea called Future Freshman had failed, and his girlfriend of two years had just broke up with him. But then suddenly his friend Reggie burst into his room with an idea: A way of sending photos that disappear. Evan was immediately excited, and said he thought it was a million dollar idea. He was wrong. It was a multi-billion dollar idea...
So, Evan and Reggie were eager to start this photo-sharing app together, and agreed to split everything 50/50. But then they realised neither of them could code well enough to build the app, so they began trying to find someone to work with. Several people turned them down, either because they were too busy or just didn’t get the point of the app. But eventually Evan managed to convince a friend of his called Bobby to help them, and he put in long days and nights of coding to help build a working prototype, which they originally named Picaboo.
However, they'd later have to change the name Picaboo to Snapchat after realising they'd taken another companies name... but that would only be the start of the company's legal trouble, as very soon their own co-founder would be suing the company, after Evan Spiegel kicked him out. Watch this video to get the rest of the Snapchat Story, brought to you by MagnatesMedia! If you've ever wondered how Snapchat started, how Snapchat grew so quickly, or why Snapchat turned down 3 billion dollars, then this is the Snapchat documentary for you.

yeah the best thing about snapchat was the privacy of only people you wanted in your circle there. I remember my dad FREAKING OUT one time because I was posting clips of us on vacation and I had to explain to him that the people who could see it were exclusively friends I knew in person aka people I trusted to not rob our home while we were away
I don’t really get how that’s different than most social media, though? Isn’t that how Instagram works? You have to be approved to follow??
@@bunnyfrosting1744 yes but in snap you wouldn't usually accept requests from total strangers or would they usually send you one. And Snapchat accounts are private for non followers.
@@bunnyfrosting1744 if this makes sense, one of the differences is visible follower&like counts. Apps like Instagram added a certain pressure to be seen, more followers was good so you let strangers follow(I was a dumb teen but so are most teens)
Snapchat made follow/view counts private so it was acceptable to be completely private and more of direct mass communication than social media if that makes sense
Well, I remember a few years ago when I knew this trick that allowed you to take pictures and record stuff without being caught. Doesn’t work anymore. It wasn’t as private as you might think.
And along with it you can even restrict the people that you've added as friends by making a private story
It's hard to find a Tech entrepreneur that will reject a $3Billion buyout for their start-up that's yet to see profit, knowing that the money he or she is going to get from that acquisition is enough to take care of them and their family for life.
That's one hell of a gut the Founders of Sanpchat had. Thankfully it did pay well for them.
Nice one Johnny!
Its way more than enough to take care of them and their family, that is by far multiple multiple generational wealth. Their great great great great great grandkids are taken care of
Edit: Also just clarifying I wasnt trying to say you were wrong, I was just being more specific putting it in perspective of how much that actually is. Now imagine your only child ends up blowing all that money away
@@Keyser___Soze I understand. All true though.
And they are usually sitting with more amazing even better ideas of what they want to do..hence to be free ot if..because there is more still
The thing is that, when you got world class app. You can still see, that you can in the long term earn more, than the 3 billion with your app and so they kept it, when what else they would have done after selling their app.
Those founders are wealthy families.
The founding of Snapchat seems like a lesson in the form of don't just be the idea guy
you might say that Snapchat seems like the lesson in the form of " be the guy that works hard on your own company to see it grow, not the one that is lazy", but OK.
@anna♡ if you can do the work alone..he could not..not even with others..

I haven't thought about snapchat much since I was using it in 2016 but this video has made me develop a new respect for the app and the company. Totally downloading it now again 😂
It and RUclips are the only two social media platforms I can be bothered to use😂
facebook is literally trying to be a monopoly and take over all social media platforms and communication platforms. i am glad snapchat didn't give in even if in the end they might both not be angels, but having all this power on one side (facebook) and have it own everything is dangerous and just makes me personally uncomfortable.
That aside, the quality of your videos is really great and absolutely beautiful, it's so neat ! the topics are well researched and the editing is crazy ! i love your channel

@@nickclark18 i'm sorry i truly don't see what you're talking about, i watched the video, loved it, came right away to the comment section to say what i think ! if what i said is similar to what some other person said somewhere then, i don't see what's that got to do with me. it's not just because i shared something that maybe a lot of other people think as well means i'm plagiarising anything. not a snapchat user but props to them for standing up to Facebook, has my respect
It was designed for sexting but they keep logs of peoples snaps and messages
Not my respect at all, wen you the amount of 12-15 year old kids who have committed suicide because of the sexting on Snapchat it’s evil is snap chat, because the owners won’t do anything about the monster blackmailers steps using young kids on there, it’s appalling , I honestly would ban snap chat, and especially the owners who will not sort out the perverted monsters and blackmailers ……. Be very careful, your child could be next! I would hate that at least I have been warning people just what an awful site it is.

Don't use Snapchat as an app, love their branding and Evan Spiegel is undeniably a G to go against Zuckerberg the way that he has.
I just found this channel, I’m so happy I did. I’ve been off of instagram for 4 years. & I feel so much happier about deleting it. The earlier years was pretty cool. But as of time went on I knew it was taking a turn. New subscriber keep up the good work. 😊

Im about to delete that shit too.. just sad to see so much memories go down the drain that I've taken so much time to sort and highlight...
I never used Snapchat.. Never felt the need for it.. but since I used Facebook for since so long I now know where all those new features were being copied from in FB's apps.
Nice end-to-end coverage. Looking forward to the one about Meta/Facebook
Me too... but you gotta allow a few years to pass first for a good and fair assessment...

Happy to see you more often man. Great video as always :)
I love Silicon Valley Cinderella stories like this. There is always this: The founders refused $1 billion acquisition offer. Zuckerberg himself once did this with Microsoft
I believe that Snapchat can be the biggest social media platform in the future if they hit the AR thing spot on. The average user being significantly younger than Facebook’s could prove to be the most important factor in their plans to expand since younger generations are much more capable of adapting to new technology.
More like younger people are more vulnerable to these apps.

The reason people use Snapchat is because it’s not Facebook. I guarantee that was either said outright during their meetings with Zuck, or at least discussed privately afterwards
This man's production is amazing for youtube. Especially the nestle and coco-cola videos.
I've just found this channel and totally enjoying bingeing all the episodes. I was getting so bored with all the things on RUclips.... I found this at the right time
Great video man! You’re not allowed to stop uploading, your voice is perfect for this kind of content 🙂💯👌
Snapchat is my favourite messaging platform and I’m 21. I love that it’s not connected to Facebook that’s arguably its best feature
I found one of your videos maybe a month or so ago and enjoyed enough to like, subscribe and turn on notifications. But because of the algorithm and how much I watch RUclips I didn't run into another video until a couple of days ago. Now I'm kind of binge watching and think you are absolutely brilliant. Do you have a Patreon?
Lmao it's like mark is big villain in the social media apps 😂
Riiiight?!!!!🤣
But he is.
I would've sold for the 3 billion. Its kinda sad but i also stopped using snapchat after Instagram stole their features. And to be honest, Evan was kinda lucky that his friend came up with the idea. To bad for him that he rather partied though.
It's easy to have an idea, it's harder to work on it consistently and make it a success
@@findou this applies to many things, even novels. Its great to have a fresh and novel idea, but what matters in the long run is the effort put into writing and the skills used
I would have asked for 4 billion.
me too, once instagram had stories i feel like everyone stopped using snapchat. i'm from singapore though, i'm not sure what it's like in other parts of the world. then, snapchat changed the entire layout of the app & i had no idea how to use it
Never knew of Facebook's "Poke" App until now... Actually thought he meant the poke feature on fb... I need to keep up more 🤫
I may be wrong, but I think Snapchat also pioneered the UI of swiping between different features - like, swiping up for memories and swiping left for stories
"The greatest Christmas present we've ever had" Mark sure got a big punch.
I've never even heard of Poke, and I'm very happy about that.
This video is amazing! Netflix Documentary quality, focused on facts, quick but informative.
As always an entertaining video from MagnatesMedia. But even more satisfying, as in this one Zuckerberg loses. I still wish WhatsApp and Instagram had never sold to Meta. I hope Snapchat never fails and haunts Zuckerberg forever.
i'm not even gonna mention instagram's decline because everyone always talks about it, but whatsapp has become worse to use after meta bought it over...
@@share_accidental Instagram more popular than snapchat.
Snapchat is my favourite app, I don’t get bombarded with stuff I don’t want to see. I get to keep up to date with mates on their stories, No one can see anything about me or my life unless I add them and allow them to. The news section in cringy but very easy to avoid and not be forced to watch that stuff. It’s my main social media app by miles.
Man I'm so happy that the only somewhat social media website I really use daily as RUclips everything else is probably like once every other week
The editing is so damn good! 🔥💯🙌
Honestly I love the long form videos this short ones makes me feel like a lot has been skipped 😭😭😭
It sucks that we are living in an age where our past, Tweets, emails & texts can ruin our lives, people can't grow, mature & learn from our mistakes, because a small perpetually outraged group on an irrelevant social media platform say so? Makes me sick
I just realized SnapChat could also stop cancel culture cuz haters go through 100 year old tweets just to backlash, can't do that if the tweets aren't saved.
I agree.
It's sad to see that the person who's idea it was was eventually kicked out , only if he partied at weekends only
Not sad, what's sad that he pooped on a great idea by partying and neglect
As someone who has experienced this, I can say that not everyone who brings an idea is suited to carry out the execution of the idea. Sometimes, all you’re good for is bringing up ideas.
The thing people don’t get is that billion-dollar ideas are a dime a dozen. It’s entirely about execution, which is much harder.
@@pjbpiano yeah but still without the idea/vision because that’s a vision or a visionair. There wouldn’t be any work for the executioners. Essentially the same as the project would’ve never started without him. I still think it was fundamentally wrong to kick the visionair out. Hey maybe he could’ve helped early on gaining users on those party’s. I think it could’ve easily been a faster growth with him still in the company
@@RaiseDennis capitalism only cares about results. It is unfortunate that you feel this way about fairness, but at the end of the day, it is those who can deliver the results that get to stay. Not those who were present at the beginning. There’s a reason Steve Jobs was kicked out of his own company and at some point called back into the company. It was because they realized that without him, a lot of the vision of the company was lost.
Capitalism only favors result based people. There is no room for sentiments.
Snapchat used to be a fill blown predator app.-- might still be. I don't use it anymore and so I don't know. I grew a decent following and used to make content on here and live stream. I got a constant stream of people asking for my Snapchat every time I was online and in my inbox. I made the mistake of thinking my channel was full of other kids and so I gave it out. That was quickly filled with a constant stream of nude pics from adult men. It scared me so much that I deleted my Snap account. I was between 11-13 years old back then. I had been warned about the dangers of social media, as a young girl, but that experience drove home just how many predators are in this world. I never told my parents because I had a similar experience on the older version of Instagram and I told my mom about it. I was quickly barred from using Instagram. I felt like I was being punished and I had done nothing wrong.
Lovely to see your channel grow
You definitely deserved it and deserved more

This is my first time watching the channel and HOLY CRAP this editing is AMAZING!
Snapchat was valued at $25.5 billion at IPO in 2017, but dropped to $16.1 billion value by 2019. In 2021, the company's market cap shot up more than 350% to $90.9 billion, it has since declined by 79% to $18.3 billion in 2023.

Ngl, the name Picaboo kinda slaps. Honestly i believe it's that 3rd burnt ex-partner who "hacked and leaked" Evan's emails. And can't imagine the same investors greenlighting tinder and maybe even Theranos, but it's a NO for Snap. lol
Dude if you’re not like 25-30 then you absolutely nailed your research. Even your opinion of the teen perception of the app. That’s exactly what it was. As a teen at the time it was one of the first social media apps that really felt separate from the adult world. They either didn’t know about it or didn’t care.

Being of age and how to manage the sequence of returns in those early periods is what seems quite scary in the current market. The market is never a loser in the twenty year cycle, but the 2000s decade scenario scares me and could really disrupt my retirement. When you're no longer accumulating but withdrawing, it's hard to be anything but cautious.
For now, investors getting started can feel overwhelming. Risk loom large and complicated, unfamiliar financial jargons can be intimidating.

Honestly I still don't get the concept of disappearing texts and images but so many of my friends use it , I have to be on it too
I am very grateful they’ve never sold to Facebook because this Meta thing is freaking me out
People don t still understand how little of privacy is kept on these social apps, all your data, your location, pictures and everything are sent to a server where the company offer your data to have full control, you leave a print wherever you upload or tap, even this comment, stay safe guys 😮
I remember first hearing about this app my freshman year of college. You couldn’t even add text at that point. Only feature was drawing on the picture if you wanted. My friends used it to essentially stalk one another and send creep shots 😂 like taking a picture of someone through their dorm room window and sending it to them, taking a picture of their laptop open to the persons facebook with lotion and tissues next to it, etc. 😂

It's interesting and great to hear how snapchat started and nice video man :]
The problem with snapchat is that your snaps don’t actually disappear… Snapchat stores them…
And they share your metadata with third party FB companies
Plus, screenshots exist in many forms. My friends thought I was a hacker for a long time, mostly because I led them on- it was fun, I'm no coder!
Can you actually screenshot while in Snapchat?
I mean, there are ways to block you from recording or screenshoting your screen.
I tried to record meetings on Zoom and either it was blacked out or no sound, depending on the settings the moderator used.
Same thing with Netflix or Amazon Prime - try recording something with the “recording” function of the iPhone and you end up with a file containing a black background, and no sound.
I loved the editting dope as usual waiting for you to hit one million sub
i think alot of people would be shocked to know that every message doesn't dissapear, it's stored in a data base, just so you know
I used to save photos my friends would share and re-upload them, wait a bit and send them links to their pics. Most thought I was some kind of dark magic god but.... screenshots existed back then too.
I was thinking the same thing the whole time: DID SNAPCHAT USERS NEVER HEARD OF SCREENSHOTS???
How dumb can you be to really believe that the photos/videos can not be saved, somehow? Even by manually photographing the screen of the mobile that screens Snapchat photos, with another phone or camera.
But, it’s clearly proven why: mostly underage not yet developed brains use the app.
Such a nice video! Excellently put up.
