    I once had a guy ask if I was married, or wanted to marry or date someone in my target language, red flags, but then he asked the same question of the guy who entered the chat party next, it turned out he and another girl in my target language were discussing dating and marrying foreigners from various countries. That just happened to be that day's topic. I think we should be cautious, but also avoid being over zealous. The guy and the girl have become friends who I love speaking with, and have helped me improve my speaking very rapidly.

    It’s really frustrating when you are trying to learn a language and culture but you are just met with harassment. I tried looking for someone to help me learn German but all I got was creepy messages from guys (mainly Indian guys) who had no interest at all in teaching me and I don‘t think they even knew German or have ever lived in Germany 😕. It’s good that some websites are trying to keep these sort of guys out but there is just that many in the language exchange/ learning community that it’s difficult to catch them all.

    I don’t use HelloTalk but I have found a similar pattern on another language exchange website. So story is a guy messaged me and asked if I could practice English with him, and I agreed. He asked me what my age and birthday was, my age was already on my profile so I just told him. Next message he went on about how our zodiac signs were compatible and asked if I had a boyfriend… btw the guy was 34 and I just told him I was 16. I was weirded out but I didn’t get many chances to talk with foreigners since this was my first time using a language exchange service and I don’t live anywhere near tourist sites, so I tried not to make my feelings obvious and said something like “I don’t know why you’re asking a teen that if you’re 34” then went on about the story/legend behind his zodiac sign to keep conversation going. I guess he got the message and stopped talking back assuming I’d blocked him, though I never did. Thankfully most the people on the site I use aren’t trying to date but that was an odd experience for sure

      There aren't any other apps to meet people from foreign countries, learn their language and find a partner though. Tinder and pretty much any other "dating" specific apps are superficial. It hardly works for guys. What's exactly wrong with forming connection through these apps? Women often give relationship advice to guys to join meetup groups so it increases our chances to form a connection through a shared/mutual interest. That's exactly what's happening here - a shared interest in learning about each other's culture and language, except its online. So why is this frowned upon? Genuinely curious.

    • @SomedayKorean
      @SomedayKorean  2 года назад +1

      I've had a few real-life friendships come from the app, and I think it's possible people can connect romantically through the app as well... BUT I think it's the way it happens that's more important. If you talk with someone for a while and then express interest down the road when there is actually a connection, that's fine. But a lot of the people I get frustrated with are the ones who say "oh you're so pretty" or ask if I'm in a relationship in the first few messages they send. To me that sends a pretty clear signal that the person isn't as interested in an actual language exchange and is more interested in my appearance.
      If I were to go to a language meetup group, I would think the same thing if someone walked up to me and immediately commented on my appearance or relationship status rather than having a more typical get-to-know-you conversation.

    I've had a girl asking me about my background before talking to me, I found it strange but during the Language Exchange, she told me that she was bombarded with messages from Indians, Pakistani, Algerians, Moroccans etc looking for language exchanges that often either pretend to come from the UK and hardly speak the language or have actually no interest in learning anything.
    Once I went into a Chat Room and it was just full of the said group, telling the girls how beautiful they were. So cringe. Never returned.

    Actually, especially if the number of messages is not totally overwhelming yet :D, what truly helped me personally, was being very straightforward in such conversations from the get-go. So if someone was starting with: oh you are so pretty, you look so young, are you married...? I was like: ok, so I see you already covered the "flirting in English" part :D, which language do you wish to learn, and how I can help you now? Literally proposing some language exercises :D. And making exclamation I am a serious learner and I expect the same from my "students". :D And trust me... that makes those creeps stop writing very quickly too :D. OR, especially if someone knows languages I am not interested in and wishes to learn languages I don't speak, I simply say: you can't help me, I can't help, let's not waste our time ;).

    Wow, I'm a 21 y/o dude who has an intense love for Spanish. Looking to find a language exchange partner but all the articles I'm reading are bringing this issue up, lol. I don't expect to have this problem because of my sex, but that must be really frustrating and I'm so sorry! Since I'm someone who's never done language exchange before, do you have any tips for how I can help people feel at ease when I approach them to start a conversation (e.g. profile tips)? I'll be trying to find 2-3 people I can have long-term language exchanges with and I want to avoid any (totally reasonable) defensive presumptions by natives

    • @SomedayKorean
      @SomedayKorean  3 года назад +4

      I would say that if you approach the language exchange with that attitude, you won't have too many problems. If from the beginning you clearly express your love for and interest in the Spanish language, talk about what you do to study/practice, and mention that you're looking for someone to have long-term language exchanges with, then you can probably end up weeding out the people who aren't interested and find some people that have similar interests.
      Also, if you use HelloTalk specifically, you could use the "Moments" feature to help find people that have the same intentions as you more easily perhaps. You could post the type of language partner you're looking for, and ask if anyone else is interested in an exchange like that. Then you could message the people who respond and might have more success that way.
      It's more the people who right away comment on my looks, ask if I have a boyfriend, or get angry if I take a while to respond that make me frustrated. So if your main focus is truly Spanish, I think it'll be pretty clear to your language partners that you're not just trying to chat up girls or something.

      Interesting to see that it's a similar experience for men as well! Guys, i ll tell you another thing about this app which is pretty sad and frustrating. The concept of this platform is to not promote RACISM, but by choosing one country to get closer of, you already neglect the other nice people who text you. Appareantly this platform encourages everbody to meet new people, but i will tell you one thing. Almost everybody is obsessed on meeting only koreans, americans and british ( as if they are the most important there and stuff) , fact which automatically excludes the other nationatilies which might deserve a chance to get themselfs known. You will see loads of desciptions like ,, If you re not korean, don t text me,, which is pretty unappealing for somebody who really has good intentions, but guess what, he s ignored and ghosted because it doesn t have that ,, premium nationality,,. On the other hand, the restrictions there are too hard. You call somebody racist, and you get reported then cancelled. There s not even freedom of speech. Calling somebody racist suggests an opinion, it s not an insult.
    That s why Hellotalk is trashy. If you re not from a big country, you don t matter. That s what HelloTalks is all about.

And even with just limiting myself to a few conversations, as an introvert I start feeling drained after a while of endless small talk with strangers lol.

If you delete their messages and do nothing else, they'd still be able to message you. Hope this helps.

      I agree! I enjoy talking to a variety of people, and I've actually met an amazing group of friends in person by meeting up with a male contact from the app. But what drives me crazy is when I've specifically put info in my bio that people clearly don't read or ignore.

    I didnt understand this app, why the hell would they allow ppl to even see your gender your age and worst your location???????!!!!
    Those thing doest help in anything other then a date app.
    And why the fuck you can DM someone too, its a app for strangers learn a language so it should have a check box for both party to start the conversation.
    The design is so weird for theirs supposed goals for the app, unless they want that mixed thing.
    Pretty sure in the future they gonna add a match system too.

    • @SomedayKorean
      @SomedayKorean  3 года назад

      The location part has actually been helpful in the past for me, since it helped me find a language partner at my same graduate school. You can also hide your location pretty easily if you don't want to share that information. But now they've made the location-based search feature premium only...

      If you let the app show your location, I'm pretty sure it uses your phone's GPS, so I'm not sure how it could be fake. I'm not sure why it matters what their real location is, anyways.

This explains why so many females are guarded on this app. I feel that this app has become a second Facebook with so many unwilling to talk but ready to shit-chat that goes nowhere and makes me want to spend my money on iTalki. Don't bother using this app if you're a "serious language learner".

    Most all guys are creepy, especially now days. No one knows how to talk to each other. Sometimes I like to think it's because of this ignorance that we get such awkwardness in our interactions with each other. Y'all need to develop some swag.
    Also I will add at first when you are trying to court someone it's almost always awkward in some way. It's supposed to be. Use it as a learning experience.
    Men, be gentleman and treat ladies with respect. We need some moral fortitude from our young men now. Especially if you ever want to be regarded with respect. $0.02

    • @Ghostrider-ul7xn

      Men are going to shoot their shot regardless of the platform, that's just how it is. I know plenty of people who found their spouses through insta, Facebook etc but none of these apps are oriented for dating. If women want this to stop, they need to share some responsibility for this issue and approach men at the same rate, so that we don't feel the need to approach them often. I've been part of this conversation for several years, but from the looks of it, they aren't really looking for a pragmatic solution. All they do is whine, whine, whine incessantly hoping that men will stop and accept their fate to die alone. And it seems that's what's happening based on recent stats and studies.

    Very typical bias way, their are also female creeps on that app, they are only on there to flirt and get a man. I am so tired of feminist calling men creeps if they don't like the man. But he is not a creep if they like him. I have had many female creeps wanting videos and photos, and absolutely foul.

      Excellent point. Its a recurring pattern I've been noticing in every aspect of life, its only "creepy" if the woman isn't interested in him, otherwise she wouldn't care about him flirting. On the other hand, men don't go around making videos on how they are disgusted by female "creeps" just for expressing interest. That's the difference.
