Whose fault is it that people don't trust journalists, science, government entities? Because of corruption. The media is full of propaganda and lies. Science is clearly co-opted by who is paying for the research. Heaven forbid real research get done AND published if the results aren't what those who would lose money won't like. Government has become so corrupted by money that we ended up HERE where we are.
Arguing that the people should just ignore all of that and believe whatever the wealthiest and powerful have decided to declare as "truth" is ridiculous. And it isn't happening anymore. So get over it, clean up the corruption, and if the journalists refuse to stop lying they deserve to go out of business.

New viewer here, first video ...annnnnd he's lying from the start.
"Climate change denial" is *_not_* denial that the climate is changing.
We *_know_* the climate is changing.
What the argument *_actually_* is, is whether *_we_* are the *_cause_* and/or *_major contributor_* of that change!
We are *_literally and scientifically still coming out of the last ice age!_*
We *_expected_* the climate to change, for the planet to get warmer!
The *_question_* is, yes, the planet got warmer, but is it supposed to be *_this much_* warmer, and *_this fast?_*
Are we *_twenty degrees over, or only two?_* (For example, not actual numbers.)
But *_lying leftists_* always make it sound like the right believes the climate hasn't changed at all, *_and that is not the case!_*
Are there complete m*r*ns on the right who think climate change entirely is a myth? *_Sure. Absolutely._*
But generalizing the extremely few cr*zies to the whole party is like saying every leftist wants Trump as*as*inated, because a few unhinged m*r*ns said so on the internet!
And that doesn't even count the hypocrites who moan about climate change all the time, but don't want us to put tariffs or trade sanctions on China, which *_guarantees_* that polutiin will be worse because China has almost no regulations and so without incentives to produce things in the West, we only make it in China instead, cheaper, dirtier, and we *_look_* greener but actually aren't!
If this is the quality of guest you will use, one who blatantly misrepresents the opposing sides, then I'm not going to be interested in this channel.

The problem with people like this is that they mix the truth with lies.
It is not a "populist" party that says "anyone not here isn't a real member of the country/community" it is a party locked in an ideology, who are *zealots* who do that, whether populist or not.
This kind of false nonsense is what people need to watch out for. Because they speak some truths and mix in tiny little lies here and there that *sound* good, in order to trick you.

I ran into this during the pandemic. I am a biologist, who has spent 20 years doing research primarily on virus discovery, the human microbiome and human virome. When people asked questions on NextDoor about the vaccine and the pandemic, I tried to use my knowledge and the latest information from my university, the NIH and the CDC to answer questions. I was challenged on the facts by someone who said that their uninformed opinion was just as valid and that it is toxic for anyone to claim that their opinion carries more weight - or that their "facts" are more correct. Giving our best current scientific understanding was reduced to just an opinion and disagreeing with misinformation was dismissed ad judgmental.

@@bdnevins explicitly misapprehends post-modernism and substitutes misunderstanding of equity and inclusion as ad populum fallacy. This encapsulates the crisis in democracy at issue here in that people make knowledge claims they can't logically support, assert equal or superior authority based on appeal to popular opinion, and suppress the facts in favor of the opinion of what is asserted to be the popular or dominant opinion. This in itself is the post-modern "regime of truths" where the popular will overpowers other values, including empirical truth, through appeals to "felt truth" (Colbert's truthiness) or "political truth" (e.g. Karl Rove-we make reality now).

The fundamental issue in the United States today is the intense polarization that occurs whenever one party wins the presidency. Instead of rallying behind the new administration and focusing on what's best for the country, the opposing party often spends the next four years undermining, criticizing, and obstructing, creating a constant cycle of division. This adversarial approach does nothing but deepen the rift between Americans, making it harder to achieve meaningful progress.
A true patriot-whether a citizen or politician-should put the country first, even if their preferred candidate or party did not win. Constructive support and cooperation are essential for a healthy democracy. While it’s natural to have disagreements on policy, the constant vilification of the opposing side only serves to pit Americans against each other, rather than uniting them in shared purpose. After all, just because your party lost an election does not mean the other side is your enemy. Treating political opponents as adversaries not only weakens the country from within but also distracts from addressing the real issues that impact people's daily lives.
The goal for any elected official should be to serve the nation and its people, not merely the interests of their party. When politicians prioritize party loyalty over the well-being of the country, they betray the very principles of public service. If a party loses an election, its leaders and members should not see it as a time to obstruct and undermine, but as an opportunity to collaborate, provide valuable input, and ensure that the new administration can govern effectively. In doing so, they contribute to making the country stronger, rather than exacerbating division.
In a truly functional democracy, the parties may disagree on policies and priorities, but they must share a common vision for the nation's future. Cooperation across party lines is not a sign of weakness; it’s a demonstration of commitment to the greater good. Only when politicians and citizens alike embrace the idea of working together-regardless of who holds power-can we truly make progress and work toward a better future for all Americans.

Agree with you, this is if you can keep a democracy. The issue RIGHT NOW is that US is sleepwalking into a dictatorship, and there will be no democracy. This is an issue. What you described sort of existed before the mass social media - now manipulators, such as billionaires or foreign adversaries (sometimes they are also in cahoots) warp the reality of people to manipulate them. If we do not solve this - the democracy will collapse, or is already collapsing.

Yuval has valid critiques of populism but misses the point that populists capitalize on legitimate problems like wealth inequality and lack of autonomy, they just misdirect anger at scientists and media. Power is absolutely a huge motivation for capitalists and government officials, anyone who doesnt understand that is burying their head in the sand. You cant just dismiss these problems from a technocratic perspective.
Acknowledging the nature of the state and capitalism doesn't require one to think that all people are power hungry just that centers of power have a selection bias for power hungry people. So it is certainly irrational to believe that journalists and scientists are all "power hungry demons". But politicians and captains of industry? Its very rational to assume they are, in fact there is loads of data indicating that entrepreneurs and politicians often have sociopathic tendencies. Ignoring that is as unscientific as the conspiracies he loathes.
None of these observations require conspiracy theories. He is however correct about the deleterious nature of the erosion of trust in media.

In the roughly 200,000 years of known human history, Democracy is an outlier that has only sporadically existed in any organized form from time to time.
The history of Our Great American Experiment in a representative democracy is only coming on 250 years. It has always been fragile and constantly threatened by those kinds of forces and primitive fearful, hateful instincts that we presently so alarmingly see preparing to take power.
Fortunately, modern history shows us that fascistic, authoritarian governments are usually short-lived, and have tended to burn themselves out of existence by inducing the wrath of the rest of the world (the Nazis, Italian Fascists, and Imperial Japan), of their own people (the U.S., France, Ireland, India, etc.), or by being so incompetent and inefficient as to fall under the weight of economic realities (Soviet Union).
The pendulum of human history swings slowly but inexorably. We here in America will apparently have to suffer its swing toward authoritarianism for a while, but it will not stop there, and will immediately begin to swing once again towards democracy.
The trick is to keep it on that side for as long as we can, all the while knowing that it never stops swinging.

The problem is that social constructionists are right regarding people and language-the truth is relative. The "truth" for you is not the same for me. That's not to say there isn't objective reality, but much of what we label "reality" is actually society, culture, and belief systems mapped over objective reality. These things are subjective and depend on human context. Harari is right that great lies often propel society. We see this with religions, myths, and political movements.

That sort of thing is down on every level, from Trump to most other politicians of every stripe to the media on various platforms. It's what people do that is of greater consequence.

Marx thought human nature was creative , not about domination - but he was a realist in terms of politics/geopolitics. He also thought deep aspects of human nature, what he called species being, were still to be discovered. He didn’t believe human nature was infinitely malleable by changing social sisters - which is why he was such a critic of Fourier, Owen, etc
