- The result of a multi-year effort, supported by the financial contributions of a USDA Forest Service Wood Innovations Grant, among other funding sources, and carried out by a dedicated team of professionals in the northeast, the validation of the use of two wood species native to the northeast US has been completed, their use in CLT certified, and now those CLT products have officially been installed in a real construction project!
In this video, I'll take you to see the currently under construction Fairbanks Museum addition, located in St. Johnsbury, VT. This project is utilizing Eastern Hemlock CLT - which I believe is the first such application of this mass timber species in the world. Some of the back story as to how this came to be will be shared, and details of the design and construction site are shown.
Some related materials to the work researching Eastern Hemlock CLT which led up to this awesome moment in time:

Excellent work and beautiful use of this natural product.
great work on bringing attention to this project and "new" CLT type! Us engineers out on the west coast are loving it!
With this construction system always needs vigas/pilares or just can put the panels ?
Lo que quiero preguntar es si para construir en este sistema varios niveles, siempre necesito poner vigas y pilares de madera + los paneles o puede sostenerse solo con los paneles? gracias 🤔
What moisture content was the hemlock at when it was laminated.?
I’ve read that most softwood CLT stock is dried to MC much lower than standard KD 19. Since the closed cells of Eastern hemlock don’t allow for standard KD19, what was done differently to use Eastern hemlock?
Great question. As you likely know, Eastern Hemlock is typically sold green and rough, and CLT requires the input lumber to be planed and MC 12% +/- 3% at the time of CLT manufacturing. This work was done at Cersosimo in Brattleboro, VT. As the use of Eastern Hemlock in mass timber products grows, it will necessarily create the demand for more infrastructure to process the lumber prior to CLT production. I don't know the specific details of the kilning for this specific lumber vs. others but can ask about it. Thanks for watching.
@@MassTimberHowTos St Regis built the Costigan stud mill to use Eastern hemlock. The decision was made at the Lumber and Plywood division headquarters in Tacoma. I was not involved in that decision, but apparently the differences between Western hemlock and Eastern hemlock were overlooked. The St Regis technical center worked very hard to make that mill successful on Eastern Hemlock but ultimately it became a spruce mill. my understanding is that it is impossible to get the water out of the cells and that the cell structure will collapse if the kiln process goes on too long.
Some years after St Regis merged into Champion, we bought the Passadumkeag stud mill which had 90% of the market for Eastern hemlock studs. We ran all the lumber through the kilns but it was only to get the free moisture out of the lumber so the shipping weight would be less.
@@billcraigis that stud mill still in operation or has it been sold or dismantled?
No both the Costigan mill and the Passadumkeag mill, which cut a lot of Eastern hemlock, were dismantled years ago.
@@randyrand-renovate2075 Both Costigan and Passadumkeag were dismantled in the early 2000s.
Type V-N (SP)?
great vid, some minor feedback, your music is LOUD compared to the voice over. quite jarring.
It's fine. Just turn it down some. Why does everyone want to express their criticism? This is awesome 👌 This company makes great products.
the music is too loud and unnecessary
Thanks for the feedback. Always looking for ways to improve.
