man that was so helpful. I took piano classes so it made sense to me. up to this point when people would 2,51 or something like that I was lost. Good stuff . Thanks.

@@Pickupjazz - I was intrigued by his mention of a Nashville numbering system - I’ll be researching that.
Here in the pacific we play by ear ... and I can get my way around most songs pretty easily.
It’s nice to know a little theory for when you get what we call “the paper players ha ha ha”
That’s not a disparaging label at all
We love the paper players who can decipher the squiggles on the page
Paper players mixed with ear players make for dynamic music
      Cheers fir a great channel

Yo weren’t you in the B-story music video where you’re supposed to be young Julian smith? Haven’t heard the song in a decade. Great music video. If im wrong, so sorry 😅

The number system is pretty straight forward to understand. What I don't get for years is HOW DO YOU DO MATH while you're playing? Even Jude said it himself, it's ALGEBRA lol. For the life of me, I can't figure how to quickly know what 251 in the key of B# or F is. I literally just have to sit down and count each chord out one by one. It doesn't seem at all feasible to just memorize it because there are so many progressions. So just how do you train in the number system to be able to go "Ok it's a 1645 in D# and instantly know okay 1 is D#, 6 is .... (see I don't know what 6 is unless I count it up like I do ABC). How master 😭

Memorize the notes in your major scale. If you know those, you know the root note of every chord. Thinking of it this way allows me to think of one note rather than a full chord. Hope that this is helpful to you!

@@thomasgamble70 Hey Thomas thanks! I mean I'm not even trying to think in terms of chords, I'm still at notes lol and idk how memorizing notes in major scale helps. For instance, I know G major is G A B C D E F#, and if someone were to say give me 6 in G major, I'll have to count 6 to find E, similar to how if someone asks you the 17th letter in the alphabet, I bet you'll have to just count up to it. So just how do you do all that in your head when you're playing? I'm sure ppl don't cuz I can't fathom that everyone who knows the number system by heart are just living computers that can compute that instantly. I must be approaching it wrong.

@@Shredberry Ah yeah that manes sense. A little trick that I use for that is knowing my intervals for my root notes. For example, if I'm in the key of C, I know that C is my 1 chord. But I also know that whatever note is one string below on the same fret will be my 4. And if I'm on the A string, one string above my note on the same fret is my 5 chord. This works anywhere on your lower three strings. So If someone calls the key of D, I find my root note on the A string, and then I know all my my major chords in the key by going up or down one string from there.

It really just takes tons of focused practice and memorization of different chord types/shapes and all major scales. It takes a long time to get to the point where you just know that B is the 5 of E, c#m is the 6 and everything else like that. The convenient thing about guitar (unlike piano) is that the shapes and movements that you get from chords and chord progressions are the same, regardless of the key you're in

The scale you are using...1, 2m, 3m, 4, 5, 6m, 7dim is not the Nashville Number System. In Jazz music the 2 chord (ii) is typically referred to as minor, but this is not the NNS. In the NNS if you write a 2 it will ALWAYS be played as a basic Major chord. A minor chord in the NNS must have a suffix attached as in 2- or 2m. There is never a time when the 2, 3, or 6 chords will be played as minor chords.May I suggest you research this further and you will find that what I'm explaining is accurate. Best to you!
