M-Audio Hammer 88 Long Term Review - The Best MIDI Controller Keyboard for Piano Players - Logic Pro

- M-Audio Hammer 88 is my personal favorite and number 1 recommended midi keyboard for the pianist. It offers a minimalist set up with solid build, fully weight keys, full sized keys, input for the three piano pedals commonly used, offers half pedal, and excellent velocity and dynamic controls with any VST Library you are using. I use it with Embertone’s Steinway Walker 1955, Joshua Bell Violin, and many native instruments libraries. Stay tuned for the next videos where I present the Steinway and Joshua Bell libraries. The most real sounding and dynamic libraries I have and highly recommend. Thanks for watching!

Would this minimalist keyboard meet your needs?
I bought this keyboard myself a few weeks ago. I'm very happy with it so far - a great feel, very well built and I love the minimalist look!
What kind of music do you play?
@@MACROMARVIN At the moment I am writing piano based rock in the style of prog bands like Genesis and Marillion. I’m getting back into writing and recording after a break from it for a few years - I use Logic Pro too. There are some videos of my old (Welsh language!) band on my RUclips channel if you’re interested. 🙂
Thank you for this video. That Steinway sounds amazing!
I grew up with an acoustic piano but since moving to the city (6 years ago) we had to sell the piano and I have been stuck with a very cheap plastic midi keyboard since, so I have lately been looking for a MIDI keyboard that will allow me to play and express more delicate classical pieces in a close way to a real acoustic piano, and hearing you play chopin really showed me that this keyboard makes it possible! It's very affordable too so I think that I will most likely buy it.
My other option was to get the Kawai VPC-1 but it 3 times the cost and extremely heavy, and it looks like this can do the job!
Btw I actually prefer this minimalist look over keyboards with lots of faders, effects, screens, etc. This looks a lot more pure, delicate and pianistic (if that makes sense) haha. Thanks for the video!
I totally get it, when you look for a portable option it’s obvious that there are many digital pianos with build in speakers that have advanced in tech. But the price tags are heavy! I’d say this midi keys he’s is a great compromise in price for the expression you get out of it. Best thing about it is that you can play more sounds than a single piano. You’ll have the flexibility of using dozens of high quality piano samples from real renowned pianos that most will never have access to. Check out my review of the 1955 Steinway sample by Embertone ruclips.net/video/d_QdCH_by0s/видео.html
Happy to get a pianist-producer's prospective. Definitely getting this one
Thanks for watching!
Hi Marco, thank you for posting this video. I just bought this keyboard to learn how to play piano. I’m having a hard time setting it up. Could you share with me what your computer setup is and what application you’re using?
I paid for this and I’m waiting for it to arrive and literally can’t wait! So from what I understand is that the dynamics (pianissimo-pianissisimo) vary according to which piano library you’re using. I was just wondering how quiet does it get and if there’s a setting in Kontakt to increase the dynamic range or velocities
Hi, thanks for the review. This is definitely going to be my next keyboard. What is the piece of music you start playing at 10:40 I've heard it before, but don't know the name. Great playing btw and cheers 👍
Thanks for watching! It’s comptine d’un autre from Amelie
@@MACROMARVIN Thanks 👍
Just bought this midi keyboard yesterday. So excited. Not a good piano player but I'm going to use it for orchestra and guitar. I'm tired of using my macbook pro keyboard on Garageband or clicking on the notes individually with my mouse.
You play beautiful, I love how you can put expression onto each note you hit. Let alone the simplicity of the keyboard, I don't really care for a whole bunch of dials like with the Komplete Kontrol 88. That thing's a beast but a little too much for what I need at the moment. My dream midi keyboard would be the one Hans Zimmer uses, forgot the name.
Congrats! I’m sure you’ll have a lot of fun with this keyboard. You’ll quickly find out how each instrument behaves on the keyboard and adjust to stylize and make it sound really real. Orchestra was one of the libraries that took me a while to find a good sound for, I’ll make a video about it soon.
What kind of music do you play?
Between this and the oxygen im just gonna say screw it and get this sweet beast.
Those fully weighted keys for soft expression really are essential.
If i feel like i really need a controller with knobs and buttons to control automation etc ill just pick up an akai mpk mini for those purposes.
Yeee! This thing is beast and I think the price is fair. Definitely a durable product.
When you made this video you state you had only had this keyboard 5-6 months. I wouldn't class that as a long term review as stated in your title. Looking at the date, it seems you posted this video a year ago. So I would be interested now, what are your thoughts on this keyboard? Does it still function as it should? Any problems with keys etc?
Do you still have it?
Still enjoying the keyboard and have posted several arrangements on my channel using it as my main tool. I haven’t had any issues or concerns with any keys or functionality. This thing has been serving me well! So I’m still happy to recommend it. Thanks for your feedback I’ll consider making another video to follow up now that it’s been more time.
@@MACROMARVIN Thanks, that's good to hear. 👍
13:34 great man !!!
I know it's being too long, but I have a question.
do you have or knows about a M-Adio Oxygen 88 basic tutorial?
Thanks
Thanks for watching! Sorry I don’t have experience with that keyboard, but I can tell you that it looks to me like a similar version to what I use with addition of the level controls. If need quick controls and mixing this could make your life easier. I saw that it includes faders, knobs etc. so it does offer a lot more control. I need to learn how to use those things more, I think I’d get good use out of it
nice !! nice ! the reliability of the keybed .... over time?? worth over a piano like korg d1??
Thanks for watching, I haven’t used the Korg D1 but I can say that it looks like a worthy competitor especially since it functions as a digital piano on its own as well as midi controller. I think it would be a matter of preference. I’d have to feel the keys to compare them.
Great review
Thanks for watching!
Oh your technique is absolutely extraordinary
have you compare this with the anterior keyboard
you think this keyboard should be a little bit heavier÷÷÷÷????????????
I’m actually quite happy with the weight of the keys. They are well balanced and I actually was able to do runs better than on my digital piano that is a dedicated piano with more key resistance.
I'm thinking about getting this as my first piano. I heard some people complaining about sharp edges, is that true?
Haven’t had that experience, I think may depend on playing style? I’ve been happy with the feel of mine.
Dont know what VST you chose, but have you given Pianoteq 7 a try?
Looks neat, I’ll check it out!
Are the keys of M-Audio Hammer 88 Graded ?
You’d need to get the newer version called Hammer 88 Pro for graded keys. m-audio.com/hammer-88-pro
@@MACROMARVIN ok thank you for the reply
Hey Marvin! How does it compare with Arturia 88?
Wish I knew lol I’ve only had this 88-key controller
Why so much reverb?
What is the name of the song you were playing? I recognized it from being sampled in a Sadistik song?

The original is composed by Yann Tiersen called comptine d’un autre from Amelie
Does anyone know how to set up the sustain pedal?
Idk if its to late, but at the back of your keyboard there should be an input for the sustain pedal
@@arevee1441 actually not too late at all. It just doesn’t work even when it’s plugged in
The talking tho.
