This is so fucking cool. One of my favorite songs you're playing here, and your main riff is something I can't quite describe, but what a feeling it gives me! Beautiful arrangement. Lou continues to be something special. His guitar work and his tones still hypnotize me, as well as his words
I like this a lot. it's really interesting. I have a guitar that is just used for 'Trivial' or 'Ostrich' tuning. I tune to all D's and I worked out the songs from the Banana album and even though 'Heroin' isn't in 'Ostrich' I think you made it sound really effective. I sometimes use my Ostrich guitar to record what I've played in standard. People constantly ask how I get the sound. I use light gauge strings and in over 20 years have rarely had a string break. One of the most famous songs to use 'Ostrich' tuning that people don't realise is 'Rock n Roll part 1 and 2' by Gary Glitter/The Glitter band.
Yes, I too was a big fan of the Glitter Band tuning. Ostrich guitar played against horns, sax, or in the case of the VU against a droning viola, or keyboard adds real tension and texture!
@@Mr.Man18 The Ostrich Tuning is all the strings tuned to the same note, this actually gives the guitar one note over a three octave range. I perform The Lou Reed Drones with seven guitars. The guitars are Ostrich tuned to seven different notes. I think the guitar in this video was tuned to DDDDDD.
People are always asking for tabs for every little thing they see. It's on video so you can learn it and commit it to memory, pencil it into a little notepad or watch the vid and write out the tab yourself. It's all right before your own eyes folks.
What gauge strings do you use when tuning to ostrich? I'm curious as to whether I would need to restring my guitar as well as retune to be able to try this sort of thing out.
You are right Lou plays the song in standard tuning. I wanted to show an alternative way to play the song. If one were just a singer-songwriter this tuning may be helpful. If one has a full band then all of the various parts are covered using the different instruments.
I never asked Lou how and when he wrote Heroin. I do know that some of his other songs went through several incarnations before finally getting recorded..."Junior Dad" is one of them.
I'm fairly certain that "Heroin" is in standard tuning. I also feel that you are adding to much complexity to what is supposed to be extremely simple and repetitive and almost hypnotic up until the point that the song speeds up and it plays G Dmaj9sus2 G, and then goes back to D G6 D. I think you've lost that here, you've lost the constant drone of the open D string.

Sounds REEEEEEally good man!
Strings are standard 10 - 46.
Hey, is ostrich tuning all E or D? It's just in the videos of it being explained I'm not sure if they're saying one or the other

@@onesdrones3000 Thank you very much, by the way, great playing man. Not many videos or covers of this band
I am impressed, did not expect that at all. Work on temp and you got a masterpiece. Atleast a killer rhythm to a killer song.
Absolutely love this version of the song!!!!
Thanks, glad you like it!
This is great. Thanks for posting it
Thank you, I'm glad you like it!

thanky
This is cool, but woulda been a lot cooler if you played the strings one by one so we can learn how to tune it
It's five years ago now. However, I think it's Ostrich in D; which is DDDDDD. If not then DbDbDbDbDbDb. I hope you have fun!
Awesome job, tabs?

10 - 46 standard set of D'Addario.
but does Lou actually played it like that? i thought he used standard tuning for this one...

DDDDDD
tab?
Awsome! Anyone got tab?
May be you can share it? the video is pretty clear.
Which pickup are you playing on?
I think it was both pick-ups together.
Danny Page danny
@Danny Page danny
Doesn't sound right during the picking part. Sounds better in standard tuning, sounds like the record.
ruclips.net/video/yzt2o_gJst8/видео.html Back in the day!
Cool but not how it was written
I never asked Lou how and when he wrote Heroin. I do know that some of his other songs went through several incarnations before finally getting recorded..."Junior Dad" is one of them.
DDDDDD?
Hmmm this was a long time ago. I think it is all D's DDDDDD. D Ostrich.

This is punk, not academy.
Ur telling Lou's guitar tech how to play Lou's song. This is very funny.
