Nothing wrong with Mint, I don't really see the point in bothering with a more difficult distro unless you have a specific reason to or you just want the learning experience. Welcome to Linux!
I think the point I made about this on Reddit is still valid even if you have to guess the application, like you explained. In a open network (for example an open wifi in public traffic, a hotel, etc.) these Macs grant everyone a free list to check for vulnerabilities. I mean, if you know which applications are running, you won't need to do a port scan basically to know which attack could cause any damage or letting you in. This is a major security concern from my perspective, so I don't know what Apple means when they say this procedure would improve anything making it more secure. Getting this kind of information automatically from a computer allows a hacker to check these hashes against a table of vulnerabilities when he is in the same network (without anyone knowing he does so) and if something like a possible root-access or remote-code-execution appears on his screen, he could start an automated attack by pressing a button. So Apple made somehow the game "Watch Dogs" reality... you can basically enter a Mac by pressing a button (with some delay because of the scanning).
So scetchy hardware standards for a while, OS that is slowly going rogue since T2 chips making USB 2.0 devices directly connected to macbooks not work properly, and now less control over a device you should legally own and even options via terminal and open source being taken... I wish there's a Windows Vista moment with Apple soon, just so they eat crow

LMAO!!! Does it?!? Because its hilariously TERRIBLE at a lot of the things you listed!! I work at a school, Apple isn't as smart as they think they are! I regularly have to fix glitches that mess with the date, time, language AND region!!! Like, why is it ALWAYS defaulting to Afghanistan and sometimes setting the date to the summer of the 1700's?!? 🤣🤣 APPLE!!! Maybe fix these idiotic glitches BEFORE recording entire populations as being in Afghanistan!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Hell! I sometimes have to set the clock manually because letting Apple set the time automatically is ALWAYS very VERY off!!! Like, sometimes as much as 12 hours!... And a couple hundred years 🤣🤣🤣
but macs are not that bad.............................
if you're running linux on them
It takes a galaxy brain to give money to Apple
Maybe a galaxy in relative to a fraction of an atom
What the fuck is up with brand loyalism..
