Hey guys. It’s Rob Evan. It’s so wild to see this (and your comments) after 27 years. You know you have to have a solid ego and definitely a sense of humor in this business. So many points of view and all honestly valid. That’s what’s so incredible about the whole experience right? It’s so personal to each of us. Jesus I was young! So so grateful for the experience and the many fans that gave me so much during my run as J&H. I’m so glad this is here for my kids and hopefully their children in the future. We shot this during a normal week of performances when I came back to the show to be David’s matinee Jekyll. It’s a grueling role and needs an alternate as I was for Bob and Joe was for me. It’s rough on any day. The feedback from the many Jekyll’s who have followed was overwhelming as they had this as a blueprint to learn the show and make it their own. So cool. And btw, David H was LOVELY to me and gave me so much credit for helping him learn the role and making it his own. The courage to be on Broadway and face criticism should never be put down. If you do, I challenge you to play the role and post it on line. Good luck with that part… 😂 It’s CRAZY business and believe you me, you could never say or write anything worse than the agony we put ourselves through to walk out in front of all of you. So glad for your views. So grateful to be a part of this. FREEEEEEEE!!!! 😎 RE
I absolutely loved your performance in Jekyll & Hyde. I still remember how we watched this very video in my high school English class. It was the first musical I ever saw, and it really sparked my love for the theater. It's incredible to hear your perspective after all these years! Thank you for being a part of such a memorable experience.
what ever happened to Aria?
YOU NAILED IT!!!
You were absolutely amazing as Jekyll!! I always wanted to play the role, but alas, I’m a girl haha! Regardless, I enjoy coming back and watching your performance! You and David were both amazing!
You’ll likely never see this comment, but holy shit Mr. Evan your performance is absolutely incredible! My roommate and I ADORE your version of this role. I’m not as big of a fan of Jekyll and Hyde as my roommate but I know he loves your version, it’s likely his favorite! I’m sure all the other comments of how great you are make this comment seem like nothing, but know that we both watch your performance over and over and over again. INCREDIBLE JOB!!!

It’s theatrical shorthand. The audience still needs to understand what is going on, so they use simple cues to tell you what’s going on.
I don't think it's just his hair, it's the way he carries himself, his expressions, his energy. Completely different from the Jekyll everyone's used to

I thought hasselhoff did an incredible job. His character switches are insane and the amount of depth he put into Hyde especially really have me goosebumps
He played two different people so perfectly.
I agree Mr. Rob Evan did an awesome job playing as Dr. Henry Jekyll and Mr. Edward Hyde compared to David Hasselhoff which to me did a great job as Edward Hyde but his version of Henry Jekyll annoyed me.
39:15... That slap!! The moment when Jekyll stands up, I thought that he was going to attack and start a whole club fight scene.

That is because in the book he wrote down everything that happened so his suicide note would explain everything if he had to kill himself because people were after him and the potion wouldn’t work again.
SHIIIZAaaa
The character Jekyll is different from the book... In the book, Jekyll used Hyde to commit evil and hide from all the repercussions as Jekyll. He enjoyed being Hyde and his double life
Ellie that’s what he is like in the beginning during first transformation and alive and maybe a bit after, but then he starts to want Hyde out of him. I see where your coming from and the book is awesome, even though there isn’t as much belting and emotional singing 😂😂
Yet, both representations are great stories. Even if they aren’t exactly alike, they can both be looked upon as great stories, like Phantom of the Opera, or Hunchback of Notre Dame.
I always preferred the more well known split personality version. The concept of the main character being simultaneously the Protagonist and the Antagonist is so intriguing. (Plus the music is this musical is fantastic)
Ellie I had to study Jekyll and Hyde for my English GCSE and I wish I watched this before ! Helped me understand the story much better
I believe the musical was based of the book but not taken straight from it.
Damn, is that actual fire?? I've never seen a show that has actual real pyrotechnics

2:01:18 that feeling when I try to sing all the roles in a musical by myself.
Same. I’ve sung that whole part and it’s exhausting but so much fun.
It's so much fun to do that part. It's so hard but man it's so enjoyable.
While I do appreciate the original novella's depiction of the Jekyll/Hyde relationship more than the modern pop-culture incarnations (1 man in 2 human bodies over 1 man in 1 human body with the monster being out of a bottle only), I also like this version, as it presents 2 men in 1 body, and one of the men using shadows and hair as a disguise. I just find it fascinating.
The novella clearly describes Hyde as being small and deformed when he first appears and growing bigger and stronger, while Jeckle's own form diminishes. It's one body but it changes when the personality does, and the dominant personality grows more dominant in form over time (and vice versa) too.
Although, I also want to add that Jeckle never refers to Hyde as a separate person but describes him as the person he becomes. He doesn't blame Hyde for the crimes, or treat his as being separate from himself in anyway, but really refers to taking on the Hyde persona as something he, Jeckle himself, is addicted to.
Imagine if you could fool someone into thinking you were a different person by speaking differently and doing your hair up differently...
Holy smokes, Dangerous Game gave me goosebumps. The chemistry between Rob's J&H and all of the other main characters seems so much more genuine. Like Jekyll and Utterson's friendship is really heartwarming here. There is much more depth behind every exchange.
It's my absolute favorite scene. It's so riveting. I also had goosebumps. While there are directorial flaws in the show elsewhere, that scene is EXCELLENT.
This one should been released on dvd.
+Bob Tames Jr I agree
I agree as well, I would love to own this on video.
Anyone else get ticked off that it would skip half a second constantly?

This also happens with lots of older B-way recordings. The Carrie recording skips the three seconds in where Margaret falls to the ground after dying.

I noticed that it only does the skipping during songs, and also when a character is in the middle of saying something. I think that the person did that so that no bots can register the songs and try to copyright it.

If only they had slowed down confrontation I think its impact and show of the struggle jeckll has controlling him as well as the one acting the role to have more time to show their feeling of that character be way clearer. As far as it goes I think this ones confrontation was clearer than hauf
As much as Hasselhoff really puts his heart into it, heck, he partially funded the recording, so he is partially responsible for us getting any recording at all, this is better.
Personally, I think Hasselfhoff has been the best so far to split Jekyll and Hyde as people. Most people playing Jekyll, end up playing Hyde as a mean Jekyll, but Hyde is not just mean Jekyll, Hyde is his own person. You're not taking a good and evil side of 1 person, you're literally playing 2 people. Hasselhoff has been the only person I've seen do that properly, so far. I mean, obviously we dont know how many amateur groups have a good actor covering both jekyll and hyde, but professional perfomances only, I havent seen anyone completely seperating them to the point where the only thing they share is a body.
That doesnt make up for the fact that Hasselhoff is far from properly hitting notes, that his acting in general is quite stale and boring and was the worst performer on stage, which is bad considering he was supposed to be the lead performer. It was his passion project, and I can understand him wanting to do jekyll and hyde as its literally extremely difficult to gather people who willingly will play a character that is 10 minutes on stage, then gets killed off and doesnt reappear untill the end.
@@Predated2 Hate to be the one to tell you, but in the source material, there is no Hyde. He really is just a front for Jekyll to be an absolute bastard and get away with it.
@@anselravenhart4753 That... That's just not true. I mean sure you could go for the "unreliable narrator" route but it is stated in the text that Hyde is a seperate personality.

@@cactuspeach2517 Well alright maybe I'm misunderstanding, are you saying there are no serum and no tranformation just Jekyll going around being asshole under a different name? My favorite cast of Jekyll and Hyde on Broadway in 1997, included Robert Cuccioli, Linda Eder, and Christiane Noll. Absolutely awesome!!
THE BEST EVER!
My absolute favorite thing in this recording is a small one but it's in the scene where John finds out who Hyde actually is. The first shot of Hyde in this scene is when he's asleep, but the way Rob Evans positions himself it shows the underside of his nose, making his face look skeleton-like. It's a simple thing but shows how different Hyde can look compared to Jekyll when transformed. I don't know if Rob did this on purpose, but it's awesome nonetheless.
P.S. I hear if you're lucky and a patient person, THE Andrea Rivette will say hello to you in this comment section
I went back to that part in the show and you’re right. I can totally see it. Such a cool detail, and I wonder if Rob Evans did it on purpose or not too.
I can't get enough of the Alive Reprise. It so amazing! I think it's even better than This is the Moment, especially when it's sung by Anthony Warlow.
First time I've actually listened to this musical. A little clunky, definitely, but full of heart and rather good writing. ovo
So, I'm binge-watching a number of the posted J&H's -- and ROB EVANS is definitely the best lead I've seen. Brings a classical sense to his acting that elevates the book. And his voice is perfectly placed for this demanding vocal score. Congrat's!

I love your dramatic dots......
whynot747100 Could you possibly give us a download for your copy of the Rob Evans performance?
I'll never get over how people in musicals just start singing. Wish I could do that in real life too
I agree with you. This is the version that should have made it to DVD. An actual singer, an actual Broadway performer as J&H. "The Hoff" was... not. I guess it could have been worse... Like Russell Crowe as Javert. That made me cry... for all of the wrong reasons.
How can you even compare these two?
Russel Crowe's acting is much much better and even though he didn't go opera voice with Javert at least he could sing.
I liked his singing. Kinda confused how some people thought his singing was horrible?
But yeah back to the point: How can you even compare these performances?
+Kyubi095 Well, because his acting was (in my humble opinion) dry, emotionless, and whiny. Oh, and his singing was horrible.
+Kyubi095 i love Russell Crowe in general hes an amazing actor. his acting wasn't the best in les mis but not horrible he had some great parts one that stands out is after all the young boys make their stand and are killed that he walks past them lined up and stops at the young little boy sorry u forget his name at the moment and had tears in his eyes and put a metal on his chest. It gave javert a soul not just a mean jerk running around after Valjean. His singing though was off key, had no range or power. I'd actually take his performance over Hoff.. Hoff was just so goofy in his acting that Hyde was funny and not dark or intimidating and his Jekyll was kinda rude and gave an entitled big attitude even to his close friends. He just didn't know how to portray the characters at all in his acting or with his singing, vibrato was like he inhaled helium, just awful.
I believe that he wasn't a terrible Javert. for someone who didn't perform the actual musical before.
Singing is not ALL. David Hasselhoff's acting is much better.
1:25:43 You can’t explain away an addiction. You’re right the first time. It’s an addiction Henry. And a very dangerous one that’s ripping you apart and now taking the lives of others. This is my favorite version of "Take me as I am". Thanks for posting!
I've only ever known the David Hasselhoff version. I loved David's version. I thought he did a great job despite not being a stage actor. And it took a lot of courage to step into a very difficult role. Mad respect for him. Always grateful because he helped produce it. Rob's version is also great. His transitions between Jekyll and Hyde were amazing. He made different character choices which were fascinating to watch. As an actor myself, it was very interesting to have the same cast except the lead actor and watch their different choices. Certain moments hit differently. I just wish I saw this earlier.
This has by far one of the best “confrontation” performances that I have ever seen. It was perfect. Far superior to the Hoff’s pitiful performance. This should have been the version that was put on DVD. I hate when they shoehorn in subpar “celebrities” into roles that they can not do. It is the downfall of many musicals.
I love how in the messed up version of Jekyll & Hyde it shows Mr. Hyde walking into the charity event at 1:20:15 - 1:20:33 and no one knows that he is there until he says " Well, Well, if it isn't, faith, hope, and charity".! What's also funny is that the same people that asked who he is are the same ones that mocked and humiliated, him as Dr. Henry Jekyll.
Emma Carew is a standout in this show!!
Definitely a dream role of mine, she has such wonderful songs!

HOLY FREAKING GOD!!!! Rob's Hyde is so scary!! 0_0 yep, I liked it more than Hoff's is darker, he's more anger and hate, amazing 👏👏👏👏
I agree, Rob Evan’s Hyde is terrifying because the scientists Henry Jekyll thought were just like him embarrassed, mocked, and humiliated him
are the reason why he goes after them one by one as Edward Hyde. Hoff’s Hyde was good but I could not relate to his version of Hyde but I could relate to Rob’ s version of Hyde. What I also liked about Rob Evan’s version of Hyde is that you can see the anger and hatred he has for the scientists which he thought were fellow scientists that embarrassed him as Jekyll.
the lighting and the acting capability for the confrontation at the end is INSANE. good shit indeed
We saw the original cast in NYC, and I saw Chuck Wagner in Detroit. Both were fabulous. One of my favorite shows ever!
Mr. Rob Evan was really young in this musical he said that he was 29 when he played as Dr. Henry Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He just turned 51 on June 12, He looks like an older version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with short hair and glasses now.
At 43:03 that music is he exact same thing used in Undertale when you have to figure out the piano puzzle.
Not quite. The chimes here are supposed to mimic the tune a church bell rings (to tell the time, not to indicate a death). The piano puzzle isn’t quite the same tune.
The mix is so much better. The ensemble sounds a lot more powerful as well. Also, I'm sure the music director breathed a sigh of relief when Evan was on because he could at the very least keep up with the orchestra
I love this Hyde so much. I saw League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Jekyll and Hyde were done a huge disservice. This version is the one I know and love. He's just so sinister and spooky.
Oh YES! This should have been the version released onto DVD. David Hasselhoff was simply horrible.
And, this is also the old show. The entire show has been rewritten with songs deleted & new songs in their place, and the entire show has a new feel to it.
I never heard of the entire show being rewritten. I'm a huge fan of this performance and the original cast recording with Anthony Warlow, but if you could elaborate on the musical being rewritten since this, I would love that
I just love David H...
The show wasn't necessarily rewritten post-Broadway. There were some song changes ("Good and Evil" was replaced by "Bring On The Men"). It's more that the licensed version is closer to the Warlow concept recording than to the Broadway production.
Even this matinee camera rehearsal wouldn't exist without David. He made it possible to have the show recorded. I'm very grateful.
@@singerAR0406 amazing job in this, andrea! And yes, I think people should be grateful that Hasselhoff allowed the show to be recorded.

When it comes to the music, singing, and the distinction between Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Rob Evan nails it all the way. His "Hyde" voice has a totally different personality of its own- something I haven't seen as sharply as other actors who played the role of Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde in this musical.
But when it comes to acting during the different scenes as Mr. Hyde, David Hasselhoff kills it, much more so than Rob Evan. His acting is better and a lot less blunt than Rob Evan, but his singing voice and Hyde impression can't compare with Rob Evan.
So it is a toss-up in performance to me. I like Hasselhoff's acting, but I like Rob Evan's singing performance and Hyde impression. :/
Matthias 66 I agree with you that Rob Evan did a great job at switching from Jekyll to Hyde Singing wise but once you explained about the acting part of Jekyll and Hyde I have to disagree with you because yes, David Hasselhoff did a great job and was terrifying as Mr. Hyde but I found Rob Evan’s Mr. Hyde not only terrifying but more believable and entertaining to me, David Hasselhoff ‘s version of Mr. Hyde seemed forced and blunt to me.
for me the transformation scene is a definite tiebreaker- like hasselhoff completely butchers it by flopping around like a fish and sliding all over the stage, evans is more grounded and doesnt look like a fuckin vaudville act
Hasselhoff's singing in this show makes me cringe. His vibrato and habit of scooping notes does not work with this music.

I first came across this recording of the show about a year back and I’m SO GLAD that it appeared in my recommended feed. Rob Evans’ performance of Jekyll and Hyde is the absolute best performance I’ve ever seen with these two characters. Just the way Evans seamlessly switches back and forth between the two is pure talent. It’s so cool what just changing vocal tones and ranges, hair, facial expressions, and the carrying of one’s posture can do! I love theater so much! My favorite moment of that seamless transition is at the end with “Confrontation” which Evans performed perfectly. Thank you so much for uploading this incredible performance and making me fall in love with this story. So many great lines and funny moments. Chilling performance! Now I’m reading the original book.
Okay, Rob Evans killed it here.... but can we talk about how the actor that portrays Lord Savage is the same as the spider???? Like, Hell, he should be the understudy for Jekyll, it took me a blog post to find it out, I never would've realized on my own.
I really love Rob Evan, and I've been looking for the full recording with him in it for a long time. Only this recording skips every few seconds. I mean, it's still great, it's just kind of annoying.

Despite how flawed the original production of the show was, this will still always be my favorite version of it for nostalgia sake. If I have to endure some narrative and character problems to get some fantastic moments, amazing songs, and astounding performance from people like Rob Evan, then I'm all for it! Thanks for putting this up. I could never get thru the Hasselhoff one. omg. A braying mule is all I can think of. Anyway, this one is much better. SoHills VetTech At least with Gerard Butler in Phantom it was understandable because he embodied the role pretty well and acted it decently, on top of drawing in regular people since he was already a well known actor as it was. Hasselhoff was a complete Hollywood actor on a broadway stage. At least Gerard stayed in his place.

I thought Sebastian Bach was the best Jekyll/Hyde. No one can sing those songs with the grit and screaming emotion more than Baz. His hard rock career was a perfect bridge to this rock theater....you have death, drugs, seduction, lust, deceit...what's more rock-and-roll than that??
Thank you so much. My older siblings and I just finished it tonight.
?
I don't know why I didn't see this until now I love it. wonderful acting.
(I wish there video didn't clip in and out and had the ending but I still enjoyed it.)
The wedding scene is on RUclips. I uploaded it long time ago😀It's on my account or u can just search for it on RUclips
So great!! Rob Evans killed this role ❤.
I saw this cast on Broadway. At that time Rob was the understudy to Robert Cuccioli.
If you saw the show while both Rob and Bob were there, you wouldn't have seen this cast, but the other OBC members; Rob Evan was the alternate (not understudy) then, as he was here.
AlexiaDark both Rob and bob played the main role at the same time. Bob C played at evening shows while Rob E played matinee shows. Meaning Rob was on 2-3 shows a week until he took over totally as lead role. He was the lead role for over a year at one point.
Correct. That's what I meant to imply; the difference between understudy and alternate, and that most of the principal cast had been replaced by this filmed performance.
Thank you for this upload. I wonder why David H. didn't do his own rehearsal, although I must say, I'm glad he didn't since it made this gem available. Thanks again!
omg rob evan your contrasting characters are incredable especialy t the end!!!
This is very beautiful musical, I like this genre so much
Who is the director of this production?
I'm starting to notice that every version of this show on RUclips looks almost identical. Sets, actors, etc.
Wait, I just noticed that it was the rehearsal for the DVD of the Hasselhoff version, never mind.
THANK THE LORD ROB EVANS HAD A PRO-SHOT OF HIS OWN
Gorgeous voices it's all wonderful
