    Good vid. The IFR environment is all about managing tasks and mitigating risks. One thing I have noticed in the GA world is that very few people seem willing to launch with Pitot Heat already on and verified working. Instead waiting until they enter cloud and hopefully, not forgetting it. Making it part of the before takeoff routine is habit forming and removes one more thing to think about at a time when you are task saturated. It is standard ops for us at the airlines and when I fly my personal RV, my pitot heat is always on.

    Great video! My pilot mentors have always told me the instrument rating is the most satisfying of all. It's the only additional rating I've earned and it opens up the skies, requires discipline and situational awareness, and extends flyable days to most days of the year. Loved watching you guys in and out of the clouds following the needles. It was intense! Even though instrument is most satisfying, I can see a CFI rating in your future... :)

    This was a jam-packed episode! Glad I got to watch the raw footage with Blake; the additional content really helped to grasp the big picture. To be honest, this episode felt like it was mostly teasers. That's the problem with juggling so much different content; you want to keep your viewers informed about your process as well as your experience, but having to introduce so many different experiences in one episode leaves the viewer feeling like they have ADD. Maybe it's just my old brain wanting to slow down and focus on one thing at a time. As a director with a tremendous amount of excellent content in the vault, you have some tough decisions to make on what, when and how to present topics. I don't envy you. As for my build, I'll probably send you an email; getting very close to being finished.

      Hey Kurtis - curious as to your thoughts on the first of the series that was just published a couple days ago - I tried to keep the edit as linear as I could... but ultimately got up to my old tricks to some degree; I felt the ned to cross cut related contextual bits from my "initial familiarization" flight in Canada, and the "acceptance flight" that I rode along with Micke for in Austria.

    • @kurtisf3366
      @kurtisf3366 3 года назад

      @@FlightChops I enjoyed the episode. There was cross cutting, but it was mostly between similar flights and in the same phase of flight so it flowed well for me. I think the stuff that threw me off a bit in the past was things like being in an IFR video then my kid distracts me and I look back and we’re doing aerobatics. These cuts seemed fairly linear and to all be telling the same story about learning the airplane ahead of your big crossing. Thanks for asking!

    I was doing the IFR flight training when I noticed that my extreme peripheral vision was defeating the foggles ( because of a game we played when I was a child, I see everything to the extreme edges on both sides all the time ) not good when trying to simulate IFR . I in effect had a horizon on both sides all the time. It was necessary to close in both sides of the view limiting device . Not having fully restricted vision does not prepare a pilot for real IMC conditions . That adjustable device looks like it works well. My flight instructor said that my recovery from unusual attitude while under the hood was the fastest he had ever seen.

  • @ShuRugal

    You should look into an iPad mount with fans on. I 3D printed a mount to stick on the copilot panel on my Mooney, and the current version of that (redesign 3) includes a cutout for an 80mm PC fan, along with some channels to allow air to flow freely along the back of the iPad. Stuck a USB powered fan on the hole and haven't had an overheat cutoff since I started using it.

  • @niklaspilot

    With the direct entry I found flying outbound for 30s before making the turn to the outbound heading works fine. When you then turn inbound again, you'll usually be pretty much lined up with you inbound track.

  • @alexacb63
    @alexacb63 3 года назад +4

    It's a common issue with the direct entry, a lot of training is done with the entry being very close to the inbound track, where an immediate turn to the outbound track is appropriate, but then if you actually enter at say around 90 degrees from the inbound, you've already effectively done half the turn, so you should probably delay the rest by 30s to put you in the right place...

    • @mytech6779
      @mytech6779 3 года назад

      20s for a 90deg (following a circle is 1.57 the straight line radius.) but the first outbound leg would also be reduced by 20s because the entry turn had its center shifted by one radius.
      Dang now you got me using CAD and a spreadsheet to find the delays and offsets.
      Looks like 6 seconds per 30 degrees is a good approximate for an outside(coming from the unprotected side) direct entry and the outbound leg is reduced the exact same amount of time.
      For an inside(protected side) direct entry, and the assumption of no acceptable way to start the turn early, then all the measures are less tidy. Also, adding delays in the turn at 180 to the entry angle is too complex for common use in flight, so you will always end up starting the first outbound leg too close to the inbound leg and needing to make it longer. The outbound leg will need to be extended roughly 8 seconds per 30 degrees of entry angle from the protected side. The exact correction for reference, a worst case -70deg direct entry is to exit the entry turn 9.2 degrees early and then fly outbound for 79seconds, while a -30 angle requires only 2 degrees and 67 seconds.
      (All before correcting for wind.)

    • @mytech6779
      @mytech6779 3 года назад

      The short version is an adjustment of 6 seconds per 30deg ( 2s per 10deg may be easier for some. ) from a true direct entry is close enough inside or outside, it just needs to be added or subtracted in the right places. And 2-10 degrees wide on the outbound heading for a protected side direct entry.

    Could somebody explain the "Staying Alive" song while IMC?

    • @FlightChops
      @FlightChops  3 года назад +1

      The idea is that your scan is following the tempo of the song. sometimes you might need to stay on one thing for a few beats (such as tuning a radio or setting up the GPS). Thinking about the tempo helps to avoid fixating on any one thing - like you definitely don't want to find yourself looking at one thing for over 30 seconds with out checking in on the status of the primary instruments.

    Great lesson about task saturation. I believe you are a bit too dependent on the ipad, it seemed to take a substantial amount of your attention on a "non-critical" item during high workload. The actual backup instruments for the attitude indicator are the turn and bank coordinator along with the directional gyro or magnetic compass. I have caught myself on the ipad dependency issue and have cut back drastically on its use in flight. It keeps me too heads down for my liking.

    • @FlightChops
      @FlightChops  3 года назад +1

      I hear you about the “certified back up instruments”. But if we lose the vacuum pump, we lose the DG as well as the AI. The power of a solid state full AHARS back-up when flying an old airplane like this can’t be overstated.

    • @FlightChops
      @FlightChops  3 года назад +1

      @@scottmonroe6522 Yes, but the previous comment mentioned the DG. Anyway - yeah - all well and good, but I like to equipe myself with as much back up as able. So it didn't feel great to have a solid state AHARS system sitting unusable because I had't thought through the set up enough. That was the point of sharing this lesson.

    • @flynjay7178
      @flynjay7178 3 года назад

      @@FlightChops I get it for situational awareness. Be very cautious of non-panel mounted backups. Turn & bank coordinator, Vertical Speed indicator, and the magnetic compass combine to replace the vacuum instruments. The Ipad has so much information it is very easy to get distracted from the most important rule of flying. Fly the airplane. Fly safe, keep learning!

    • @FlightChops
      @FlightChops  3 года назад

      Cool yea, but to clarify, I am not using the iPad back up AHARS primarily, it is there to glance at and confirm everything else is telling me the truth. If I got into a real emergency with a failed AI, yes, I *could* fly partial panel using the turn co ordinator as a primary, but man, that would be scary, and having synthetic vision on the iPad to confirm what I am seeing on the partial panel is correct would sure be nice - If they started disagreeing with each other that would make for an uncomfortable situation though.

    For changing direction within the hold in a TAA aircraft I think the best way would be to suspend the course and "manually hold" with the timer. Sometimes this is the best way to hold, period, with the G1000. In Garmin products, it can sometimes be quite onerous to input a new random hold while flying the airplane.

      @alexxd_1252 3 года назад +2

      Kind of have to agree, while a nice addition to situational awareness, a pilot should feel equally comfortable with the certified gear in the airplane. Why no paper checklists?

    • @FlightChops
      @FlightChops  3 года назад +3

      Fully agree, but I need to clarify this is not about superseding the certified equipment, but rather supplementing it. In the case of Blake's plane, I don't trust the original vacuum system much more than I trust the old transponder... So when I am planning to fly IMC, I want the back up AHARS that I get with ForeFlight / Sentry.

    • @josh3771
      @josh3771 3 года назад +1

      @FlightChops You handled it professionally, please don't take it the wrong way and throwing it to the ground was a very smart move. I do like foreflight, especially for planning.
      I can just see a lesser pilot getting distracted trying to fix it becoming further behind the plane or panicking. In VFR conditions this is bad, in single pilot IMC, life threatening.
      Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I see more and more younger pilots glued to the devices relying on it for everything. (nav, check lists, notes, calculations etc)

    • @FlightChops
      @FlightChops  3 года назад +1

      Oh, and Alex, we do have paper check lists in that plane too, but I wasn't going to pull them out for that cruise check in the bumpy IMC conditions - so for that case it was gonna be a memory list regardless... I cross checked later when I had the iPad back online.

    As a non American/Canadian IFR pilot, I never knew you could do solo IFR time in the US/Canada without a rating haha. Also how is this aircraft IFR capable if it doesn't have GNSS (technically legal in Australia but there are pretty much no ground based navaids), duplicated AIs or power sources for the primary gyros? Seems rather dangerous if you have a vac pump failure in IMC. Partial panel flying in hard IMC is an incredibly high risk undertaking.
    Overheating iPads are a given in Australia so as a result, you're pretty much required to have a backup as a chart reference and it's prohibited to use them as a source of instrumentation.

    • @FlightChops
      @FlightChops  3 года назад +3

      Clarification required: it IS NOT legal to solo IFR with out the rating, the airplane IS certified for IFR even with out a GPS, and the iPad is NOT a primary nav source.
      But agreed I’d rather fly with more systems back up than a single vacuum system in a 6 pack, which is why the RV-14 we’ve just built has an insane quadruple redundant panel.

      I'm not sure what your point is...? When you're the safety pilot, you're already acting PIC since the pilot flying is under the hood. Therefore, it's no big deal for the safety pilot to get an IFR clearance. While the pilot flying is under the hood, they can also log PIC since they're the sole manipulator of the controls. The only real caveat here would be for the time the pilot flying isn't under the hood -- they'd essentially get to log nothing. This is because the safety pilot would remain acting PIC but no longer essential for the flight when it comes to logging purposes.
