Hey. I applied for a job and they told me in order to get the details of the position i needed to sign a non compete. I refused and they asked me" why?" I told them im an applicant not an employee. Was i right?
Its a contract job, so i think they wanted to sign so i wouldn't apply for the position directly.

Without knowing any more information, a non-compete for a job applicant seems overreaching and would likely not be enforced by a court.
However, confidentiality agreements for job applicants may be appropriate in certain circumstances.
