  • r/Choosingbeggars can make some pretty crazy demands... including DEMANDING that you take their place in jail! C'monnnnn, it's what a TRUE friend would do! Just go to jail to serve their time because they deserve their freedom more than you (even though THEY were the ones who broke the law). Oh, and did I mention that they committed the crime AGAINST YOU? So yeah, the choosing beggar steals your identity and then gets angry when you don't go to jail for them. Classic choosing beggar logic!

My cousin's husband is in the National Guard. His only service is literally that one weekend a month and two weeks a year kind of thing. He doesn't serve overseas or leave his family for extended periods. He has a regular full-time job as a contractor. However, my cousin will go into restaurants and stores, DEMANDING his military discount. Most places actually cave into her so she won't put up a bad review about them "hating military". But it does my heart good when I find about a business that won't put up with her horse crap. She's insufferable about the whole thing, which is why I refuse to go anywhere with her. The last time I spoke to her about her entitlement, she cried, "Well, he's gone so much, leaving me to take care of EVERYTHING! You don't know how hard it is to be a single mom, because that's what us military wives are!" I looked her and said, "Oh please. My husband is a computer programmer, and he's been gone to conventions more this year than your husband has been gone to fulfill his duties." She didn't like that.

@@saffiegirl4158 Your cousin's husband is just as qualified to use military discounts that retailers offer. Having a military i.d. or in some cases even just veteran status on your DL is enough. He may not deploy, but he he still could as he did sign that blank check to the government valued up to his life if the shit hits the fan.
So what qualifies him is that oath of enlistment that he took, putting him on call 24/7 to serve and possibly even make the ultimate sacrifice.
Now being an a-hole and making demands for discounts and other veteran benefits is just tacky and embarrassing to the rest of the troops. Sounds like someone needs to have a heart to heart with him and teach him a bit about humility and selflessness (or at least the outward appearance of selflessness).

Well let's not completely discredit military Spouses. Granted I cant soeak for every spouse and having also worked for AAFES I know what you mean by depends. But it is emotionally difficult when there are some deployment you cant know where they are and when they are coming home. It's the fear of getting that folded flag at you doorstep. Explaining to your young children why mom or dad isnt home. Dont pass it off as easy being a military spouse. I know I go through a lot of emotional anxiety when my husband is gone. It if hard and I personally feel if you have a DOD ID you should qualify for discounts if offered. But I'm not going to make an issue of it. Also, I believe retired (actual retired) should get discounts. I've been to places that only discount Active Duty or In Uniform and there are some rules on wearing your uniform in public. If you served 20+ years or were honorably/medically discharged you e earned that. Theres a lot of "active" duty who have never even left their home state who whine how they deserve all this shit. Or people who left after their 4 year enlistment was up and brag about being a hero etc.
Anyways that's my two cents. It is hard being a spouse. But also dont be a Karen

As a military spouse... yes, that is an extremely common phrase, perpetuated by the military themselves. It's basically drilled into our heads that military spouses have a "harder job" than the military member. Almost all of the Marine Corps Balls I've attended have a portion of the ceremony dedicated to the spouses of the service members. In the military, spouses of the service members are definitely put on a pedestal, and it DEFINITELY goes to the heads of a lot of them. I am not remotely surprised by that woman's rant, and many (if not most) military spouses would totally agree with her.
I do not hang out with other military spouses for a lot of reasons... the entitlement many of them have is one of the main ones.

    • @daveadams4402
      @daveadams4402 5 лет назад +75

I agree. Being the one in the military (retired now) that saying was always there. I always thought it was the military's way of saying stop complaining your spouse has it worse. Any time someone gave me a discount I was just happy to save whatever percentage they gave. If they did not offer one, I never got upset and I still ate in those restaurants.

It's also just a saying. It has no bearing on anything in the real world. I'm retired military, and I haven't experienced what this dependopotomus experienced, but I wouldn't worry. It's not even mandatory for a business to offer a discount. It's all on the manager/owner to decide whether or not they want to. It's one of the business's ways of showing support for the armed forces.

SoPsyched I just hope they never have to go back to that horrible bitch again and that cps had the sense to take her baby into custody. Sometimes cps is way too lenient with clearly awful people who have no intention of ever changing their behavior. They ought to permanently revoke her and the fathers parental rights and try to find an adoptive family or a good foster home for them. I have considered adopting when I’m more financially stable but I’m a little intimidated by what I know about these situations. If I adopted a kid who was older I hope I could adopt his or her siblings too because I know it can be hard to find homes that’ll take them all and I couldn’t live with separating them. I can’t imagine not having my sister in my life so I could never be a part of separating someone from their brothers and/or sisters

SoPsyched I knew a girl like this...had serious drug problem (alcohol mostly) and convinced me she had her license taken away because her ex took her car and crashed it in a high speed chase and fled the cops. My sister who knew her more laughed at me and said nope that’s a lie! She was the driver, assaulted the cop in the process and that’s why she had a interlock device on her car, lost custody and had to go to counseling. Some people are so drugged out hey can’t recognize their faults. The mom in this story also was enabler where the mom of the girl I knew wasn’t taking her daughters crap. Her parents had custody of her kid. (Kids father had died in a car accident years before .not his fault) truly sad cause the kid was a sweet boy.

They are easily identified by the calls of "Do you know who my husband is!!!" and "The hardest job is being a military spouse." or "It's OK my husband is in the field/deployed you can come over!"

"The hardest job in the Navy is being a military spouse."
Well you can make it easier if you enlist...
Edit: I understand that it would be difficult being home scared because there's a significant chance that your spouse won't make it home alive. However, the person serving has to worry about everyone at home being heartbroken should they become a KIA, IN ADDITION to being shot at while they're working.
Both are hard, but it's pretty obvious which one is worse.

It's equal parts. When your spouse enlists, you more or less do as well whether you want to or not. You have a code of conduct as their spouse and any problems you cause immediately have consequences for your spouse. So not only do you have to worry they won't come home when they are deployed. You have to worry that you are following all the rules that the military requires of the spouses, because your spouse will be punished for something you might not even think was a big deal. I dunno about now because my sister was an enlisted wife so for all I know they don't do this kinda thing anymore, but when my mom was a military spouse for my dad, she was required to attend the weekly Officer's wife meetings. Even if she didn't want to be a part of his military career, just wanted to stay home and take care of the house, didn't matter she was an officer's wife and not attending would very much cause trouble for my dad. Not only that, she was required to attend all functions that my dad had to attend. It was not uncommon for there to be problems between spouses and it leak all over the lower ranked one's husband and made his life a living hell. From a mental warfare standpoint I'd stay they both have it pretty bad. Especially since the military personnel willingly signed up for what they go through, the spouse kind of gets shoved into it and then cornered by the fact they can either go with the flow or cause their spouse real problems.

“The hardest job in the (insert any of five branches of military service here) is being a spouse” is actually a bumper sticker. It’s tough being the spouse of a military member with deployments & training and actually spouses of MM’s (military members) who somehow can’t grasp that it’s not a 9-5 job punching the clock. The last instance is usually due to them being young and not understanding that the duty day doesn’t end at a specific time, but when a unit releases them for the day, but still can be recalled at any time for various reasons. As to the CB who demands a discount for themselves, yes, they are married into the service, but since they haven’t actually signed a contract to be IN service, they are considered dependents. These, I’m sure are the same ones who mistake their spouse’s rank for their own and when families interact at unit sponsored events, they demand the more/automatic respect from the spouses of spouses of lower ranking MM’s.

Hi there! I was actually a miltary brat, and to answer your question on the second one: it comes from the fact that these questions will often arrise during, for example, a deployment
    "when are they coming home?"
    "Are they okay?"
"Mommy, why are you crying? Is daddy hurt?"
It takes a heavy emotional toll on the family, not quite as heavy as on the service member (especially in an active combat zone), but there is still the worry of not knowing where they are or if they're safe since calls may be sparce. Discount worthy? I dunno, but many businesses will offer discounts to a surviving spouse or dependent in the event of the service member's death where the service member would obviously not be around to collect the discount

In that time the other spouse would be alone with the kids, which at that time would normally be 3-4 and government barely supported them, meaning there was close to no income. And in that Time I would almost consider the saying to be true. But today...no way
