His tone wasn’t exactly traditionally great, but he had such great control of his voice where he could hit basically any note he could think of, and his musical insight and creativity was impeccable. He’s truly missed.
His tone was so unique though. He just sung his own way and didn't care about traditional rules of what "great" sounds like. I feel like that's pretty inspiring and lots of singers could learn from that
I can't think of any singer who sounds like him but for some reason it seems familiar to me. I love his voice - it's very unique and some of his parts in A Little Piece of Heaven sound amazing imo
@@ohhellnaham5445 This categories aren't that much today, we have baritones with range higher than tenors, the big difference is in the tone, but range is not affected. Shads used to be able to hit D5 live. But it still sounded great when Shads would do the octave lower and Rev would do the high part. That is the immense loss of not having Rev is his live vocal contribution. Just as a comparison, James Labrie used to hit F#5 live but if you hear him now he can barely hit G4 lol
Shadows used to hit G#5/Ab5 multiple times on a daily basis after City of Evil came out. I played a Jimmy tribute show in Detroit. In which, I replaced Jimmy's lyrics to "Nosferatu Does A Hefty Dance", with a eulogy of sorts. Pinkly Smooth, for real made me rethink music, and I've been a Bungle fan since the mid-90's. Jimmy and Syn turned me on to the genius of Oingo Boingo. Everybody knows about Danny Elfman, but how many people know about the genius of Steve Bartek? Jimmy had a vocal range of over 2 octaves. Which is rare for male vocalists.
Well absolutely amazing Jimmy the Rev Sullivan you are deeply missed you had a unique talent and a unique voice definitely one of the biggest creative forces behind Avenged Sevenfold I hope you have found peace on the other side we will all take the time out to remember you as the beautiful human you were inside and out you rule James💘💔🤘❤️🔥🤘🥰🔥💟
@nya it’s honestly hard to tell for me. I’ve always heard a true chest voice doesn’t really go above F4, and everything above that is some sort of head voice. It’s why I said full instead of chest, but it doesn’t sound very heady. His voice is so naturally high and nasally that it’s pretty difficult to distinguish what register he’s singing in, and it’s distorted like crazy with a bunch of false cord too
@nya why don’t you listen to it for yourself and tell me what you think about the F5s? They’re isolated quite clearly in breakdown video I’m linking. There’s an insane F5 at 10:00 and then the brief one I mentioned again at 27:30. I honestly have no clue what register he’s singing in, but it sounds modal and I don’t hear any real change in tonality from his D5 notes to F5, except for the fact that he’s definitely reaching to get that high F. The time stamps are for this vid, ruclips.net/video/RTnO24cJEaQ/видео.html
I'm hearing rumors that he hit a unsignificant non-melodic D2 in Critical Acclaim, nevertheless, still not sure where's the lower passages in that song supposed to be.
@@ringo.9396 most likely the whispers at the beginning of the verses but it definitely doesn't sound like a legit note. There is a D2/D3 tone in the isolated vocal track but its constant and doesn't follow the words or inflection. It's probably post-processing effects boosting the frequency at D2
Good video but why use the vocals of Afterlife, scream, and almost easy mixed with the other vocals? Tracks of these songs with just his voice do exist. Not trying to be an ass but just wondering.
Shadows' voice only has a nasally kick on it throughout the album "City of Evil", as a sort of tribute to "Axl Rose". Also it was around the time he had surgery on his vocal cords, iirc it wouldn’t damage your voice if you sung nasally, but you wouldn’t sound as good as you could. Which could mean he did it on purpose.
A huge part of A7X died with Jimmy. He was one of the most creative minds in Avenged. One of the best drummer to ever exist and not just a drummer. A mad genius.
@@creatorgames3922 it’s actually larger than 3 octaves! His lowest note is A2 from the Fiction demo, so it’s 3 octaves and a whole tone. The A2 also sounds pretty easy so I’d bet he could’ve gone lower.
@@lachoward5549 I think so too, but probably only on a day where he’s sick or just after waking up. The C#3 from Necromance Theatre is where he began to lose support and projection in a studio recording. C3s from Fiction are so brief that they’re not really extended, sung notes. A2 from Fiction is from a demo and they say they record low vocals first thing in the morning for demos, so I’d assume this is where he’d bottom out on a day to day basis. F2 would definitely be a difficult note for him to hit but he could probably hit it, a bit like Matt and D2’s. Still not bad at all for a guy who sings F5s in a true full voice.
