  • Thanks so much to Gen OG ‪@JiBbo‬ for joining me in some old-school Street Fighter 4 action! You can follow him on Twitch here: / automattock
Today we're talking about Gen, one of the most complicated and difficult to play characters in Street Fighter 4. He has 2 stances, ridiculous combos, FADC shenanigans, and 4 ULTRAS!? Today we'll do an overview of the character, and then hop into some matches against AutoMattock aka Jibbo, one of the classic old-school Gen players from tournaments back in the day. Hope you enjoy!

One thing about the "Passionate players" is that i see often people saying "oh imagine how they would be with a top tier character" but to me it's their sheer motivation in extracting the best of the shit character (like pachikasu with sean on 3 strike, love him) that drives them to become so good, if they suddenly started playing a top tier that kind of motivation probably would not be there and they would be just decent at best.

It's not that gen is bad he just has a high skill barrier which makes people not have the confidence to try and get better with him, this happens in a lot of other games too. The best characters often take the most skill to master and have the highest payoff if you're willing to put time and effort into getting better with them. It's because they often have great mix ups but are very technical thus require more skill and practice to play at the highest level which has more potential than more basic easy to use characters with less options available.

Its really not as bad once you get the muscle in, just tap 3-p/3-k immediately after you hit the normal you want to stance-dance from and continue linking. It is like playing two characters but the execution for most combos that were relevant and switching from a stance to the other were'nt the most difficult. Focus cancelling from hands into another combo was the toughest for me.

That's why Gen is the best, true stances!😄
His jump and walk speed are also quite different and used to be even more so, they nerfed his jump quite a bit over time. Stance change takes 1 frame where you cannot block :(
Another trick for MK > Hands that is.. depressing is after people really started passing around "plink" techniques it was discovered Gen can just.. basically mash MK + MP + HP and get hands (FADC too) super easy. All those hours practicing piano and people can just roll their face on the buttons T.T

@jmcrofts You can do Gen's standing MK xx Heavy Hands with the piano method. I usually use my thumb and index finger to hit MK and LP at the same time and then continue on with the rest of the piano method. (MK+LP, HP, MP, LP, HP) You still get the 5 inputs required for hands and the MK takes priority over the LP. I was a Honda main in SF4 and this was the method that I used for CR.MK xx Hands

I used him for a while back in... SSF4 and on I think it was. I was the only one in local tourneys who used him so I had fun swapping stances each round to completely change how each round went.
    Some things you didn't mention:
    1. Super into ultra. He is one of the few characters who can get full (and obscene) damage by resource dumping. The Mantis stance super can go into either Mantis ultra 1 or Crane ultra 1 with minimal problems.
    2. His DP requires weird timing to get all the hits. And if you get blocked you float for a second which can (as you experienced) avoid 360s.
    3. His low fierce in Crane stance (I think that's the charge stance) does extra damage on counter hits. Of course it has so much start up that you need to get a good read for it to work.
    4. Crane stance low forward goes under most fireballs. Of course as someone who was still learning how to use him this wasn't something I'd remember mid-match, but it's fun to stall out fireball throwers by just ducking under them.
    5. Stance changes don't just impact jump arc and speed. Focus attack has different properties (range specifically), and I think walk speed are different depending on which stance you're in. There might be other changes, but I don't recall them off hand.
Overall Gen was one of my "mains". Considering I used like 5 different characters, I don't even know which was my main outside of Ryu.

5:15 I'm glad I'm not the only one who had to come up with this tech, for me it was for SF5 Blanka of all characters! The *only* option blanka has off of crouching medium kick that doesn't require charge and won't whiff is EX Electricity, and in SF5 you NEED a good hit confirm off of crouching medium kick or you just don't have neutral. Even after all this time, it's still a very physically uncomfortable tech to execute, too.

  • @codyxvasco592

Gen, to me, represents an important part of the fighting game journey. The:
"whoa i want to do THAT."
Picking a few things like, waterfall kicks, or the target combo into hands, or super into ultra.
Letting these things make you go "alright, i may not learn the rest of the character, but I want to do that!"
Then you end up learning more.
Anyone else do this with other characters?

One of my greatest memories of playing Gen was pulling off a 80%~ combo with him.
It required the super meter and ultra meter, where you did the super move where he dashes forward, then switch stances so you can do the ultra which is an anti air. The super barely lifts the target up in the air, but it had to be frame perfect. There was definitely a little more to the combo than what I said, but man does it hype you up when you execute it!

TBh most of that stuff comes as you play ranked and have to adapt to people’s strategies. When you start off, all you rly need are some good pokes and anti airs, and a bnb combo. The rest will sink in the more you play

Gen kinda reminds me of Lei in Tekken with the stance dancing.

While Chun’s SFVI Stance is a fair bit different from Gen’s it’s cool that she has one as a kind of allusion to her master. I think it’s neat

Gen is so difficult to play but I gotta say I think viper is a bit more difficult. Messing up one jump cancel can end so terribly and the execution of her advanced stuff is crazy but she also has crazy utility like meterless fadc combos

Viper has get off me options that made her feel extra cheap in neutral though compared to gen, gen really sucks if you knock him down but you do probably punish viper way harder if they mess stuff up, but the cieling is way higher for gen, viper worked online gen didn't

    "nostalgic for… Street Fighter IV"
I cut my teeth on the *original* Street Fighter II, the version where there were no palette swaps to allow both players to choose the same character, back when it was coin-op only
I feel a thousand years old all of a sudden

Hi JM. I have been following your channel for a couple of years. I see that everytime you talk about street fighter you never mention the EX 2 Plus series from Ps1 and Ps2. I know that it wasn't very popular among the hardcore fan base. However I loved it back in those days. Would you make a video explaining why it was so unpopular?

    • @dbycrash
      @dbycrash Год назад

Sf back then was an arcade game. The Ex games were console games so there were no tournaments supporting them.
