If your grow bags have historically dried out too much, you can always add some vermiculite or perlite to your potting mix for water retention and slow release. I make my own potting mix (one part peat moss or coco coir, 2 parts compost or Black Kow and one part Perlite or Vermiculite or both).

Such good info! I made a wicking bed last summer with a shallow kiddie pool that had gotten small holes in the bottom. Held enough water to water the bags but not enough to drown them. Recycled the pool from my duck pen to cut down on waste.

Question. I know some products are better made than others. But are the Epic bags REALLY worth 5 times more than other brands on Google? I don't want a far inferior product, but can't afford luxury.

Thank you, Jill for this podcast about grow bags. I live in zone 9 in south central TX where it gets hot very fast. We've already had 90° temps. I have a small backyard and no room for an in-ground or raised bed garden. I can only use grow bags and vertical planters on my large outdoor pergola patio. I make my own potting mix, which is cheaper than buying bagged potting mix. Last year, I kept my tomato plants in the sun but when it got too hot, I had to move them under the slated pergola to a little lower temp and to provide some diffused sunlight. They actually did better than in full sun. This year, I am keeping the tomato plants, bell peppers, patty pan squash, brassicas and other veggies on the pergola patio. So far, the tomato plants are flowering well and producing baby tomatoes. I used 10-gallon potato grow bags for my tomato plants this year. These grow bags are 16" tall and 14" wide, which should provide ample room for root development. Other veggies/herbs are in 5-7 gallon size grow bags. Overall, there are 25 grow bags on the patio. I put the grow bags on 14" wide metal plant caddies with wheels for ease of moving them around. Got those on Amazon. I also use 14" heavy duty, green, premium plant saucers by Hydrofarm under each grow bag, so any water that drains out of the grow bags will be wicked back into them. Got those from Amazon too. I love using grow bags. I find my plants actually grow better in grow bags than in my GreenStalk vertical planters. Happy gardening.

I'm growing Yukon Golds this year, and I selected them because they ARE determinate. I wanted determinate, because I'm bad about hilling. I always have been despite my good intentions.

Our daughter gave us some peppers and tomatoes that I had to plant in a hurry. Bought grow bags and sat them in a kiddie pool. It worked great but I left the bags in the pool all winter and by spring, they had grown some nasty-looking "cream" around the waterline. I had to throw them away. Now I have wicking raised beds.

Grow bags is an amazing idea 😊 up here in Canada its colder so I find with pots and pails the temperature down in the roots is warmer above ground!

I use compost and garden soil in the bottom 1/4 to 1/3 of my grow bags then the top is more potting mix. And definitely mulch to help the top from drying out in crazy Texas heat
