It's not elderly wisdom as I see with many elders I know of. The talker here is himself attributing his wisdom to years of trial and error with meditation.

Are you an expert in elderly wisdom (whatever that's supposed to mean)? All he's done is describe his version of a magical thinking process which nothing is heard, seen, nor proven. Other than talking in videos, and writing books... what has he actually accomplished? And what qualifies him to be an expert in all things spiritual?
Everyone is so taken by his age, beard, and lip smacking, that they're not actually listening. Most people tune in to fall asleep, because no one can be knowledgeable in things that are deemed invisible. I guess you think you know a thing or two about spirituality when all you do is spend your retirement sitting in church, thinking, for hours at a time, every day.
Don't forget to buy their merch!

@@Seemsayin You are right. I'm sure John would say the same about himself. John has always advocated for guidance by our own experience, not by books or religion. That speaks for his beliefs.

One of the many things i thoroughly enjoy about listening to John is when listening to him, you get a good sense that he once was filled with all of the feelings and worries that we all carry with us but has now just given in to the stillness and doesn’t seem to carry the burdens and worries anymore and is at total peace. Much love. 🙏🏼

It seems that the climate change debate has inflamed not only Siberia but our viewers. Good. let's see if we can keep our cool shall we and respect each of us has an opinion (while accepting that few of us will have actually studied the data but probably rely on the media and social media to inform us). One of the challenges of climate change (and indeed Brexit for those of us in the UK) is to maintain a healthy dialogue with those with whom we disagree. It depends on good communication which depends on good listening. And then honest thinking. Someone once said "For most people, thinking amounts to no more than re-arranging prejudices." Guilty to that. Even this morning I had a double mis-communication with my Pakistani taxi driver. "Northern College?" he asked as I got in. "Yes - Barnsley Road entrance." After 20 minutes we were on the way to Barnsley. "Are we going to Northern General Hospital?" I asked in a panic. "No sir - you said Northern College, Barnsley." I was cross and ABSOLUTELY SURE I had given him the correct destination. Reluctantly I checked my app. No - I had selected the wrong 'Northern'. My fault. Not paying attention. When he asked "Northern College?" I only heard "Northern General." My fault again. Yet I was ABSOLUTELY SURE I was right and he was wrong. So, I promise I will tread carefully in this debate, read the recommended alternative views (and videos) and come back with my considered response - as I hope you will. One thing puzzles me though - if it is a hoax ... who benefits? If it is not a hoax ... we're all losers. Phil

    • @David-di5bo
      @David-di5bo 5 лет назад +8

Thank you for this Phil. Public interest in mutual respect and healthy dialogue is definitely weakening in today's world.
You are puzzled by the hoax claims because they are illogical. They will say something like it's about money or power. The gap in this logic is that you can say the same thing about things that are clearly not a hoax. The fear of cyber and real-world crime, for example, generates a lot of extra power for governments and money to private companies. Is crime a myth too? How about the health effects of smoking, or transportation accidents?
Of course some people will see climate change as an opportunity to profit. People try to profit from everything, it would only be suspicious if this mysteriously were *not* the case from climate change!

    • @joantollifson7408
      @joantollifson7408 5 лет назад +4

Thanks, Phil. Its such a challenge for all of us to listen openly to different views, and we humans fall so easily into confirmation-bias and polarization, myself certainly included. I don’t think there’s any serious disagreement that climate change is real but there is quite a bit of disagreement about how dire it is, whether it can be slowed down enough for humanity to survive, and if so, how best to do that. Having leaned toward the more dystopian view myself, I’ve been reading serious thinkers who are more optimistic lately for balance. Anyway I appreciated very much hearing John’s perspective on this. The whole concern is very much weighing on many people’s minds and there is much fear, angst and grief, so it was helpful to hear John’s more transcendent perspective. Love you both. 🙏

I was one of those nutcase, looney tunes, climate denier, conspiracy theory skeptics before I actually “listened” to some of the global climate greenhouse cooling change points of view here. Now I realize we have only TWO YEARS LEFT to save the planet!!!
I’m terrified! The ice caps are melting at an alarming rate and scientists say by January of next year both London AND New York will be under water due to rising sea levels!!! This is a climate emergency that the world NEEDS to be talking about! In just TWO SHORT YEARS our Polar ice caps will be 100% melted and the rising seas will have boiled away! I’m nervous and terrified by this fact all the time. When will our governments DO SOMETHING!?!?
We need a communist World Government to take over NOW and control our lives for us because we’ve proven that we can’t do it ourselves.
Communism will heal the planet and make everyone equally wealthy beyond our wildest dreams. Forward together we can make sure the profit motive, evil, greedy capitalists will be locked away for good!

Iv'e been listening for about 2 years now and love his gentle voice and demeanor. This is one of my favorites.
I do want to address a logical inconsistency in his statement about countering the negative effects of modern scientific practices. While science may be demonized, the truth is that industrial processes are the real problem. Science is simply a tool that can be used positively or negatively, depending on the intentions of those who wield it. In many cases, science is the solution to the problems that over-industrialization has caused. Our understanding of organic farming, for example, has improved and become commonplace thanks to the scientific method.

Been watching you off and on Mr John, watched you originally because I appreciated your voice. Was calming, and I did like hearing a different point of view from my own- my own view being mostly secular, that of an atheist-agnostic. Someone who may not necessarily reject the idea of a god, but I won't bother with worship- let whatever entity there may be judge me for how I lived my life, not by my proclamations if that makes sense.
Found as I've watched you- while I may not agree with everything you say; I do have to say that there's a down to earth sense of realism to what you say; for those who listen. Whatever the beliefs one may hold, humanity is very fragile and temporary... but there is some things, the nature of the world, of humans as a species even that is a constant. The means of expressing these patterns may be different: For instance, the farmer of yesteryear might've gone to a market, heard a town crier talk of news and maybe got his mates riled up at a local tavern during their day of bringing their crop to market.
The person of today will hear things on the news or online after their day at work or school, and will also get motivated to speak about it, to talk about it. The difference is not the behaviour- the actual "spirit" or a person/animal as one could say; but the mental approach and the physical approach has evolved and changed over time.
I genuinely think that you've done a lot in the front of trying to farm in a natural way, avoiding pollutants and overly damaging methods. And approaching the mentality of food production as well is a very interesting premise... we've become so industrial that we've made literal slaughter factories, made fields of palm oil trees in parts of the world to supply a consuming hunger of commerce. I do wonder though; in your point of view you mentioned how the "Almighty," how fossil fuels and the cycle of human industry and existence is part of the "Almighty's" order. Do you see the "Almighty" as something more of passive thing- something that desires one to fix themselves rather than directly influence? In an analogy sense: It is a teacher- but like any teacher they cannot force a student to learn- it is up to the student to learn and embrace the concept?
I do also wonder, regardless of the case- is with the "Almighty," that perhaps are they not flawed themselves for having made life that does its own evils? Or does this entity just see all that happens as "natural" and not good or evil, such human concepts of morality being devoid from it?
I also feel that in a lot of cases in nature, and with ourselves there's so many things that seem more like experimentation in life: creatures being overly acclimated to an island habitat for instance, but then horribly dying out as soon as competition- naturally introduced or otherwise- is made, evolution of creatures that simply is not an efficient path or "upgrade" in a linear sense of things. Life seems more like a chaotic sprawl of roots attached to each other; intertwined and dependent but not a direct sense of "planning."
I feel like if there is an "Almighty" that they've definitely taken a hands off approach to the development of life- there isn't much of a direct sense of evidence for intelligent design in my point of view; and I am not sure what your thoughts are on this matter. But at the same time, ecosystems do also have a sense of balance with each other and that in and of itself is rather remarkable.
Such questions I've asked myself. For me I am honestly not certain of anything regarding the spiritual despite having looked into many different resources regarding the subject and seeing many different points of view.
I've done sweat lodges and seen people do hymns and other sorts of things, seen ceremonies of different faiths ranging from Christians to Native American tribal beleifs, Muslims during Call to Prayer and as well as my own far more familiar outlooks of scientific method, I do feel there's... something of a sense of power behind people's faith. And like any sense of power it can be utilized for both great and terrible things. Its a driving force that can take a hold of someone almost like a drug- which I mean in both the good and bad sense of the implication, depending on the usage of faith.
I did really love the statement you made though that "humanism is a false god" because I do feel like regardless of one's beliefs- whether one's a follower of scientific materialist method or a religious Abrahamic follower (Christianity, Islam, Judaism), a Hindu or Buddhist or whatever faith or ideal:
Arrogance over nature has caused a lot of misery and problems in this world.
Rivers dammed for the sake of progress. Animals fished and hunted to be put in a can for a novelty commercial food. All of this sense of self importance. I'm not a vegan or anything of the sort, but there's a point that we cannot deny: the way human society behaves at large, some societies more than others, act far beyond the means of natural resources and act with a very destructive self importance. And we are acting as a catalyst for climate change to the point that the world is undergoing such drastic climate change that we are at a serious issue of not being able to cope with the changing conditions. Boiling our own pot so to speak- the pot itself will survive the boiling... but we, as mere ingredients? Perhaps not.
I do have a question directly for you though; because you said that if you were a young man you would be ripe with anxiety with the state of the world, how climate change and other things are affecting the conditions of society and that of the Earth.
    My question is two fold:
If you were young again; what would you do- what would you personally do; in one case with the knowledge and experience you've garnered over the years- and in the other case, as a young man who has grown in the present era. I imagine the mentality formed in both cases would be very different.
What would you suggest for a man or woman of this era? What can we do better to do better by this Earth; what mental and physical changes can we make and if I may be so bold, spiritual changes? What specifics can we do?
I ask with an open mind, as a clarifier. I know my write up here has likely espoused some strong opinions- but I am open to suggestions and I mean that earnestly.
And my 2nd part of the question- do you feel due to your age and outlook of being still, of being at "peace" with the world that you are somewhat detached from the consequences of the world, that you feel you are soon leaving it and there's not much left you can do that you haven't already? Or do you feel some sense of responsibility still in some form, or perhaps with death, whatever sense of spiritual aftermath may enable you to help in some other form? Not asking to make judgement mind either way; I just am genuinely curious.
I apologize for the very long written spiel here, but I would sincerely appreciate if you answer even any of this. I am rather curious as to your thoughts.

I don't know if you've ever received an answer from John to your questions but let me ask you a question back. The answer cannot come from anybody else but from you only and when you have it then you'd also have the answers to your two questions- who/what is that 'I' that you use throughout your comment so many times [the same 'I' that is common to all speakers of English when they refer to themselves]? The world evolves around this 'I' and without it, the world, the universe and God have no purpose. The entire human civilization is constructed on 'I, me and mine' ' [very often opposing it to 'you and yours'], the 'I' that wants to know everything about the world while is still confused about what itself is in reality, beyond the hearsay concepts learned from others and used freely and skillfully to construct a world of concepts. Look at that which you know, that which you were taught by those ahead of you- that you are a person with the nucleus in the body, you have a name and a history, own some stuff, have a social position and are in relationships with others... what is that which claims all this- are you any of them/what/who are you when you sleep and where do all these go?! Take them one by one, using the power of logic and reason developed over a lifetime of practicing how to think [the others taught you]. See the false behind the facade of concepts and discard it- the truth will reveal itself by renouncing the false.

@@d1427An interesting response, thank you. Breaking down things to smaller and smaller components in life has seemed to, if nothing else, make life easier to cope with and digest.
I suppose the whole I, me and mine mentality stems from the sheer fact that we are self preserving creatures, and while not thoroughly self serving, we are indeed, selfish.
Thank you for your response. I know John and his friend has read my comment- its definitely a lot written there so I reckon they are mostly doing as you said: breaking it down logically and thinking on it for themselves. And that'll definitely take time.
      Cheers, Ki.

I agree, we have cut ourselves off from the spiritual world and the results are dissastrous. John admits that it appears that we are headed for the collapse of civilization, because of all the terrible things we are doing to nature. I agree, and I also agree that the spiritual world is the only true refuge and spiritual practice is the true work we should be doing. It appears that the runaway greenhouse effect and abrupt climate collapse have now been triggered by our extreme atmospheric pollution. The damage is so great that we almost certainly stand almost no chance of saving this planet from the ignorance, hatred, greed and anti-natural activity of a massive overpopulation of lost human souls. However, we can still do the work of saving our own souls and of being a positive example for others to follow, and so that should be our focus and our efforts should be strong and steady.

John Butler says, "I don't know what to do. God knows." How true this is. There must be a plan on a higher level, that will be made manifest, because no man has a solution for this existential crisis. No one can show us the path forward mainly because mankind will not listen and cannot see, being steeped in a deeply materialistic, unspiritual, and yes, unsustainable lifestyle. A few see, feel, and understand (like John Butler and those who have ears to hear what he says), but sadly most have dull, selfish, closed hearts.

    Wise elder, yes.
Certainly not disagreeing with John on this wide universal perspective. There is a statement we would would once chant inwardly..."Everything will be alright..." Along with "All Praise to the Lord of Worlds."
    The All and Everything.
I also see the Union in the eyes of the children who may have a saner and cleaner future if we could make a stronger effort to keep natural resources more beneficial to organic life on Earth. I see it as a kind of price to pay for those who live beyond our lives. Wanting them to be inheriting a greener world. This is happening at the same time as the forces of entropy exhaust their efforts to spew out stuff to accumulate what does not profit souls.
It's a striving that gives value to my time on Earth. The urge to conserve what is in our power to do so rather than destroy.
Along with The Jesus Prayer. Thank you, John and Phil.
This was our Prayer of Grace and individually still is.
    All Life is One.
And everything that lives is holy.
    Plants, Animals, and Man--
All must eat to live and nourish one another.
We bless the lives that have died
    To give us Food.
    Let us eat consciously,
    Resolving by our Work
To pay the debt of of our existence.
