Beginners Guide - Choosing The Right Speaker Stands

  • Visual Speaker Stand Buyer’s Guide
Most Important Things To Consider, When Shopping For Speaker Stands:
    1.) Height
When it comes to what height you should choose, make sure the height of your stands puts the tweeters as close to ear level, when seated, as possible.
This is especially true for the 5 - 7main ear level speakers.
    2.) Weight
Pick a speaker stand that is more than enough to support the size and weight of your speakers.
If you have 30 lbs. speakers, I would play it safe and get stands that are rated 40 + lbs, just to play it safe. Can never have overkill here so I tend to take my stands to extremes.
    3.) Stability -
If you are putting the stands on carpet, I generally want a heavier stand, at least that of the speaker it’s self. I also look for speakers that have a larger footprint, to give them the most stability possible.
Both the above are even more important if you have small children. People with small children usually like to mount their speakers above the child’s reach but if this isn’t an option, you should have heavy and stable stands. Many people like filling hollow stands with sand, to make them even more stable than body towers.
Many say that they get improved bass response, when they added mass to their stands. Many stands have adding sand as an option but you will need to specifically search this type of stand out.
Feet should also be a part of this category. If you are on carpet, carpet spikes are advised. This would even work on hardwoods but you will need to invest in metal speaker spoke “saucers”, to go between the shine and your precious hardwoods or other hard flooring.
    4.) Budget -
After you’ve figured out the height you need, the weight requirements, now you need to find the right stand for your budget.
I’ve seen speaker stands from about $30 new, to about $1,200 used. I would say that a reasonable budget for speaker stands should be in the 15 - 20% of your speaker value. That’s just my opinion and I’m sure many will disagree with me, that’s just my thoughts on the subject, after owning so many speakers and stands.
    5.) Adjustability -
This goes back to the height criteria above but sometimes, to get the correct height, you will need to go with adjustable speaker stands.
There are a few types of adjustable stands. The “collar joint” style, where you twist the collar to adjust the height. Another is a type that has a spring loaded “button” that pops into different height holes. The final and my most preferred, the style that uses a set-screw to adjust the height.
Everyone has different opinions here, those are just the different style adjustable stands from worst to best, set-screw being my favorite type.
6.) Do You Need Cable Management -
This is the only way to go for those like me that try everything possible to avoid having to look at wires.
Be sure to check if the holes will accommodate banana plugs or spades, if you have that type of wire. If found many of the stands, especially the metal stands, don’t account for this type of wire which has been pretty frustrating to me over the years.
    7.) Looks -
This is more important to me than most out there so I personally would have put this category above a couple of the others but I know I’m the minority here.
Be sure to pick speaker stands that match your decor as they are usually pretty impactful, visually, in most home environments, especially small ones like mine.
Have some fun here! Pick some stands that you like the looks of as you have about 1,000 options.
I truly believe that there’s the perfect stand for everyone out there!

Thanks for the video. Only thing I wish you would have covered more is mounting. Some of these look like they mount with backplates, some maybe even bottom plates, and some appear to just sit on the stand. I don't know what is more common but I'd feel safer if there was a way to mount the speaker to the stand.

Great job Dustin! I was eyeing those Ascend Acoustics in the background! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on them. Great video on explaining basic concepts that people should know before pulling the trigger. Totally agree with you on your points. My general rule on stands is to not go the cheap wood route. I had a pair that I broke IMMEDIATELY just placing some Klipsch bookshelf speakers on. They were the cheapest stands I could find on Amazon and I got what I paid for!

I have some Edifier stands filled with sand and really like them. They were Good with the Fives but I just put the Nines on them yesterday, and I'm definitely pushing it. We dont have kids in the house, but we do have two cats. Was never a problem with the Fives but theres enough surface area on the Nines, I worry about them wanting to jump on top. With the cork bottoms I cant use 3M velcro picture hanger strips or that blue putty stuff either. Looking at those Ascend you are showing for the first time and Kanto's. Like them both but the prices. The Ascend are 100 less, so I may go with those. I dont know yet. Good video.

I had a center stand laying around for a long time but I ended up giving it away, right before this video. Bad timing:/
Just search on eBay, there are a ton of high quality center stand options. You will need to pick out a beefy one, due to the size and weight of your center but they are available. Also, make sure you pick up some rubber door stops, in case the center stand you buy, isn’t adjustable, so you can get the tweeter pointed to the main listening position.
Sorry I didn’t include a center stand in the video!

Ha those stands that you have I think the Polk lsim speakers on are the ones I own :) I have a bag of sand and some zip lock bags sitting around to eventually use to fill them with sand to see if I can hear a difference. Also have some blue tack coming to see if that makes my speakers sound better as an isolator between the stand and the speakers.

    • @blazermdx
      @blazermdx  3 года назад

Those stands are nice and heavy duty, plenty to support the large Polk LSiM 703’s.

    • @blazermdx
      @blazermdx  3 года назад +3

I have purchased many speakers where the previous owner screwed them to a stand it wall brackets:/ This greatly reduces the resale value, even if the holes are on the bottom and out of sight.
Velcro seems to be a pretty good option but you should definitely have stands that sprawl out at the base, for the most stability. If you have pets or kids, you might consider wall mounting them with brackets that don’t require you to drill holes.
Great choice in speakers! I hear great things about the SVS Ultra lineup but I haven’t had the opportunity to grab a pair just yet. Only a matter of time..

Great video thank you! Regarding the KEF Q150 speakers, I don't understand why their manual goes against the conventional wisdom of tweeter height at ear level? The manual for the Q150 suggests 18" - 24" (45-60cm) speaker stands - that seems awfully low and would be below ear level if I sit on my (or any conventional) couch. But the KEF designers/engineers surely must have put this in the manual for a reason? Does this mean they designed or voiced the Q150s in a way that aligns with 18" - 24" and therefore it would be prudent to strictly stick to getting stands within 18 - 24"? If not, should I go with 28" or 32" inch? 32" would be putting it at or just 1" above ear level I'd say, but given how conservative KEF were in their manual, I was wondering whether 28" would be a better choice too... Any advice here would be so helpful! Thank you.
