On the Atrix it is positionned where you put your index when holding a phone and it work as good and fast on a way older device. When i talk about faulty implementation, it's about the software. You can find on the internet and even on RUclips some people that went through the protection of the Iphone 5S, using calls and gallery app The Atrix never had that problem, it is also the phone where localisation was implemented to find your lost phone and desactivate it and it was a Motorolla feature.
Hey dude I hope you know that you don't need to push the back button to go back on menus or on the Safari browser. You can swipe directly off the bezel to go backwards/forwards. That'll make your experience better!
And still, what about Hangout? ChatOn? Those do the same facetime does and are native Android or Samsung app... For multitasking what i said is that it is limited to the sound(Garage Band, Ipod) or GPS fonctions(tomtom has access to it). you still can't have a windowed app running inside an another app or Two apps running at the same time visually. Multi windowing isn't implemented on IOS. you can't say it isn't a plus on Android's side as it brings many convenient possibilities.
It does... But not in every country as the frequencies it supports aren't the same in all countries. And it doesn't in France for example(remember i had the Iphone 5). you can easily find a list of countries where LTE is not supported on Iphone 5 and 5S.
Uh? What do you call an complete backup solution? isn't it a solutioon that allows you to keep all your medias, photos, config and softwares, anywhere? Like Titanium Backup? If you have an SD Card you don't even need the cloud to bring your media everywhere. You still have "Just Cloud", GcloudBackup... Facetime and imessage, are native apple apps implemented as the clock, sound fonctionnalities or locations apps so it is ALWAYS running and it does take some memory and battery.
After doing our review. While I like the changes apple made, not much has changed from the 5, and the htc one to me still feels and operates as a more premium device.
First it only allowed you to locate your phone. The full software suit is way more recent. Motoblur already did it before and had the fingerprint protection in 2010. What i wanted to say is that it already existed with the full suit. Nothing to compromise the iphone 5S or anything. ;)
I think it's misleading saying that if you use gmail and other google service android is a better option. I use many google services on my iPhone without any problems at all. The different google apps are integrated into each other, so for example if you open a RUclips link on gmail it will open the video on the RUclips app. You can also set chrome as your default browser for all google product on iOS.
The fact that you can have all your social feed, meteo and news on the main screen is better than to have to open them one by one and swap between them. for exemple with flipboard's Widget you have access to all in ONE screen, not even needing to enter any app. The advantage of using a widget instead of going from app to app is the same as using a smartphone instead of a telephone+mp3+laptop, TV, etc... Confort, speed and all in one experience, ease of use.
just bought a 5s. Its a great phone with a awesome feel and sleek looks. only complaint is the screen is 1/2 of an inch too small and the battery life could be a little better other than that you cant go wrong.
Question Aaron, Is there an option in settings that allows you to go all the way to the home screen when in an app inside a folder or are you stuck with having to click the home button twice to get all the way to the home screen? I hope they can add an option to fix this because that extra step can get a bit tedious after a while.
Great review. . Pointed out all the key features....great phone.. fantastic ipod.. now please hurry up and come out with a larger display. .in desperately itching to leave android
I just bought this phone Aaron. It will be my first iPhone that I've actually bought. However, with so many fantastic updates happening in the Android space right now, I'm sure to pick up the Nexus 5 as well. I think that's the way its going to have to be. I want both of the best iOS and Android have to offer.
hey Aaron could you do a video on transfering apps, contacts, settings, alarms, birthday entries? Blackberry and iphone have desktop software to backup and restore, but I got a HTC One x and had to reenter all contacts, emails, address, birthdays, alarms, settings, and lost progress on a couple games. Could you please make a video on this? It may also help new comers make their decision on their next purchase.
Again I was only talking about gs4. The lag in iPhone 5S (emphasis on 5s since I couldn't capitalise the 5) is pretty much invisible. iPhone 5 doesn't have lag if you are comparing it with any phone of 2012 and the samsung phones.
look. you just seem to have trouble in acknowledging the lag in SGS4. and multi tasking on samsung is dumb. they make the screen big and say that's all that matters. then they allow you to make 2 apps run using half the screen size and then you can't see a thing properly. are you sure you tried texting while watching a video on the sgs4?
So is the andriod devices like SG4 and htc one! They cost same when you buy it full price or maybe $10 less. But you do get a lot for a used iphones than any other android phones.
actually, having low memory depends what you mean, if it's ram, then you're gonna have to look at the RAM the phone provides. if you're talking about storage, then yes you choose between 32gb and 16gb.
It is called freezing an app...Not true multitasking. It is more like Windows phone or Palm Pre than true multitasking. You can't have two running apps on the same time on screen, like calculator and note, or web browser+sms app, etc... You have to swap between them. It add some cool features like sharing an article by only swiping from the upper to the lower window for exemple. I use NFC in France in restaurants. in Paris. and still, it is a futureproof feature so it remains a plus iphone lacks.
I regularly get 6-7 hours of screen on time with my iPhone 5s. With the HTC One or S4 I'd be lucky to get around 4. The G2 did last me all day like the iPhone, though.
My note 2 never really gave me a problem until I rooted it and started flashing roms.. which was a big mistake because there is nothing special about the roms but errors and malfunctions
I live in the Dallas area, and I've gotten 40+ Mbps download speed. With every phone, and carrier it just depends on where you are. AT&T is more than capable of delivering though.
FM radio is a feature the Iphone doesn't have and that some people use. So no matter how you take it, the fact that you can have it on Android flagship is still a plus. For an SD card; it is useful. And the fact that HTC one doesn't have it is taken as a default and it is not the most saled android device even with it's qualities. Xperia and GS or Note or even Motorola all have SD slots. And possibilities of adding more storage to your phone slowers it's obsolescence.
Ever learned of the Motorola Atrix? Same use(for unlocking), release date: 2010... And stop talking about a good implementation in the 5S when the software of the scanner is already proven faulty with 2 easy methods.
I have a iphone 4s. Should I upgrade my phone to a iphone 5s? I only want a iphone so I either upgrade or I don't. If I upgrade my 4s to a 5s it will be free for me. What should I di?
What are you talking about? Screen Response? App lauching? Fluidity of the animations? Only the screen have faster response... The amount of things the GS4 can take at once before laging is way over what ANY IOS devices EVER handled(widget, multi tasking, multi screening, 3D animations.. And IOS7 Do lag on the iphone 5, so does it on the Ipad 4(wich is more poweful than the iphone 5). It is even well knowned that is also lose like 200 minutes of battery. You can find it all over the internet.
It has 4G but not to the same frequencies and has problem with LTE.(It doesn't support LTE anywhere).Since it is the same antenna than the 5 it lacks some support Most Android Phone has. For exemple in my country it isn't supported. Like i said the Music apps and some apps has true multitasking, (to be precise GPS, Localisation and Music apps). ALL the others freeze and you swap between them. It is trully different.
I am so lost over which one to buy! the 5S has the best build quality hands down, but I'm an android and google stuff user, the sony Z1 is the best spec wise, but it's screen kinda sucks and the htc one is a good back up, but sucks in the spec department! this is very frustrating!
for a smartphone, the things it can do is as important as the things it does WELL. specially for a flagship. The 5S still lacks 4G, NFC, true multitasking, Connectivities, etc... For a Flaship with a price THAT high, it's cleary a problem. It's obsolences truly comes too fast when it comes to features. You can't focus on power only... Almost all phones shares the features the iphone has and building qualities for flagships are almost equivalent(Sony or HTC).
Not in the OS but It does with apps, because not many apps are made to run with 64 bits processing. I'm also concerned about the poor amount of RAM wich might be a bottleneck for some apps. The problem with the 5S is that, as optimized as it seems to be for now, it does not seem futureproof. And the most important is the expérience, not the Benchmarks. Android's flaghships products remains the best when it comes to features(spécially the HTC one and GS4). Not to mention the pricing.
I have the iPhone 5 and the 5S is not worth upgrading to, IMO. The only reason I would upgrade to the 5S is for the better home key, slightly better camera, CPU and GPU. I also use Android and prefer the OS over iOS because it's more customizable. Not to mention Samsung has the led notification light. Having said that, as what Aaron said, the iPhone "just works". They are very reliable and I haven't experienced any crashes because of the simple UI.
No it is not... Freezing an app is not multitasking. The only app that is multitasking is the music app. Multitasking isn't really implemented in IOS actually. Android uses Multitasking on widgets and multi screening, things IOS obviously doesn't have. With a big screen it allows you to watch a video and sens an sms at the same time, for exemple. And stop telling i didn't use IOS, I REPEAT, I do have an Ipad4 and had an Iphone 5. It is ridiculous how hard you try that argument.
***** yeah, so? i asked a legitimate question...some people may be interested in the 5s and s4 (2 out of the many popular smartphones on the market this year) and curious to see the "dogfight" between the two, others may not.
My High School Gave all students and teachers iPad 4, and teachers MacBook Pro, and Mac desktops for every classroom, this inlined me to buying the 5s because of Apple's integration on all their devices.
The problem here is, Before 2012, each iteration of the Iphone was the one to have to possess the best smartphone on the market when it comes to features and building quality. But as Aaron said, now Android stood up and does more than keep up now. even doing better with some devices. So why buying the Iphone 5S AT THIS PRICE this time? Wich feature is added to make the Iphone 5S a better deal over the 5? Why, at this price,5S when you can have more with an Android Flagship at cheaper price?
That's what i call not well implented at release, means Buggy. And we're still on week one ore two... For the find my Iphone it is only a service. what i am talking about is a full suit of service that you now have on a computer to locate your phone, desactivate it, and had a full called Motoblur, wich was already in use in 2010. the Atrix just made the things go further by the implementation of Fingerprints scans softwares and more.
One more thing and my brother iphone it has charging problems. He tryed charging it for work the next day and it didn't. We was thing it was the charger. So I went out and got him a new one and when we tried it nothing. So we tried again and again on the new and old charger. after 2 or 3 hours we got it to charge of the old one. it charges of the new one now to but it still does it sometimes.
No, in tests running strictly the A7 and the Snapdragon 800 processor, the A7 still edges it out. Even when resolution is exported to a 1080p display, I believe the A7 chip still edges it out. Not that these numbers REALLY mean anything, but for numbers sake, the A7 is still faster, regardless of the device's respective screen resolutions
It's not that I can't work with android (yes I've had mutiple android phones and yes, I have rooted them, so yeah I can work with them) but I just don't see why you would want to, after I've experienced iOS.
That's definitely wrong! It is well knowned that it is Apple that make the hardware upgrade important by software upgrades. Try to use IOS6 on a 3GS, or IOS7 with a Iphone 4S and see how laggy your device become. For Android, you can have optimized JellyBean on older device(SGS2 for exemple), or even install custom firmware and/or a stock android rom without voiding your warranty. This is actually one of the main feature of Android: flexibility. For ex: you can find HTC HD2 with Jelly Bean.
used htc one x, gs3 and gs4 and the biggest issue i have with it is the fluidity even though you say android has caught up.. i think it hasnt.. however most of the other features are way better in the gs4 now..
Try using a Nexus 5 and tell me it isn't fluid, then I will know you are lying. It is easy to compare an iphone 5S with phones that are near 2 years old. Compare it to something that it directly competes with like a Nexus 5 or Sony Xperia Z1, or an LG G2, or even a Galaxy Note 3.
again I was talking about Gs4. also resale value of iPhone is pretty darn high sso the price of that overall is pretty close to the price of an the Gs4.
Man the battery is really the main reason for considering an Android phone. I would really like to run a lot of games but I guess this year's iPhone also has a decent battety life.
Android does not have only one but MANY backup and restore softwares (cloud based, SDcard Based, etc...). For Facetime and Imessage, I was using Skype for Android way before Facetime, And there is also Google's Hangout(the two softwares both does video and messaging via Wifi and/or 3G.), or samsung's ChatOn. Blackberry's had BBM, etc... Apple was the last one to use those features.
Thats another thing, I love to remove the batter, I just buy 2 or 3 more batteries,I dont have to be looking for a place to charge my phone ever again.
I'm guessing Aaron doesn't know what LTE speeds should be. Saying 5MBPS is typical HSPA+ speeds is comical, thats about average 3G speeds, but then again i'm on Tmobile where average hspa+ speeds are 10-12mbps and LTE is about 20-30mbps and thats on an unlocked non-AWS iPhone 5, I feel bad for AT&T users in your area dude
Just gonna put it out there. I am an android user, but iphone users just seem much happier with their phone. Android users are always out looking at specs, comparing things and getting angry at others where as most people with iphones just seem happy their phone does what they want and dont worry about it until their plans done
It is innovation only in Apple's Marketing or for Iphone users... The Motorola Droid X out in 2010 already used fingerprints for unlocking. And for screens, believe me... Samsung and Corning are also in the run, the first one with a flexible screen and the second ALREADY having the best screens nowaday. Why would they stop innovating? Also, the Saphirre usage for screen was made by MIT and many producers in the market are interested in it so they won't have excusivity of it.
Read the Anandtech 5s review where it shows it beating the 800 in the LG G2 rather handily. Note 3 dos better though and beats the 5s in some offscreen tests. 5s wins all the important tests though.
android is also a feature packed OS which markets to those that want to show off that "look what my phone can do" factor. and that's cool if you care about that but if you just want your phone "to work" then no better OS than iOS.
We are in 2013.if you talk about flagship, talk about those coming this year including all i've mentionned and some to come this year(G2, Z1, GS4, HTC One, Nexus 5) .There is not only one proposition a year like Apple. The 5S?IT also has flaws and still lacks features(no NFC, old camera, faulty gadget finger print app), and many of his advantages are still theorical till the developpers are used to the 64bits ecosystem and could be bottlenecked by it's little RAM.
Wow this is the first review of someone who isnt totally riding the iPhone 5s and not afraid to mention the improvements that are needed.
On the Atrix it is positionned where you put your index when holding a phone and it work as good and fast on a way older device.
When i talk about faulty implementation, it's about the software.
You can find on the internet and even on RUclips some people that went through the protection of the Iphone 5S, using calls and gallery app
The Atrix never had that problem, it is also the phone where localisation was implemented to find your lost phone and desactivate it and it was a Motorolla feature.
But what do you think about the camera quality? I missed that point.
You sir, have just earned yourself a new subscriber
After doing our review. While I like the changes apple made, not much has changed from the 5, and the htc one to me still feels and operates as a more premium device.
I'm getting the iPhone 6 I didn't see any reason to upgrade to the 5S when I have the 5...so I can't wait for the 6.
You said that there are better devices on the market.. Can you tell me which ones?
First it only allowed you to locate your phone. The full software suit is way more recent.
Motoblur already did it before and had the fingerprint protection in 2010.

Did you see ANY lag on the G2 in his video? I didn't think so?
I think it's misleading saying that if you use gmail and other google service android is a better option. I use many google services on my iPhone without any problems at all. The different google apps are integrated into each other, so for example if you open a RUclips link on gmail it will open the video on the RUclips app. You can also set chrome as your default browser for all google product on iOS.
Cool so you don't have to click power button everytime to wake up the screen right?
do you know what an app store is?
The fact that you can have all your social feed, meteo and news on the main screen is better than to have to open them one by one and swap between them.
for exemple with flipboard's Widget you have access to all in ONE screen, not even needing to enter any app.
The advantage of using a widget instead of going from app to app is the same as using a smartphone instead of a telephone+mp3+laptop, TV, etc...
Confort, speed and all in one experience, ease of use.
wheres the projector keyboard that comes out??
just bought a 5s. Its a great phone with a awesome feel and sleek looks. only complaint is the screen is 1/2 of an inch too small and the battery life could be a little better other than that you cant go wrong.
Question Aaron,
Is there an option in settings that allows you to go all the way to the home screen when in an app inside a folder or are you stuck with having to click the home button twice to get all the way to the home screen? I hope they can add an option to fix this because that extra step can get a bit tedious after a while.
Why does the iphone need a quadcore procesor? And what does it has to do with inovation on the market?
How did part 2 come before part 1
Good review. Very unbiased. And for the guy that says your an android fanboy, what is the phone you actually use Aaron, as your personal?
Great review. . Pointed out all the key features....great phone.. fantastic ipod.. now please hurry up and come out with a larger display. .in desperately itching to leave android

Agreed. AOSP roms run blazingly fast on mine.

didnt they review this phone last year?
Greatest and honest review as always
Great vid, android guy. Really thinking about my first iphone.
But the GS4 itself has alot of features significant to the phone rather than the OS that slow it down, not touchwiz
didn't they review the S4 last year?
Are they going to do the iPhone 5c?
I had the I phone5 switched to HTC one big difference happy with the one
One thing going against this for me is screen size - i just can't imagine back - 5 inch is a minimum it seems.
FM radio is a feature the Iphone doesn't have and that some people use. So no matter how you take it, the fact that you can have it on Android flagship is still a plus.

hey aaron i Live outside of the US, i have my itunes Radio on my first iOS7 update but its gone by the next day,is there anyway to get it back?
My s4 doesnt send emails half the time.
I'm not saying it's the same, BUT you can do anything you want to wish ios. it just may take a few more button presses.
How does the battery compare to the Moto x?

I have a unlocked Note 2 and it doesn't crash on me. My brother has a iphone and it does ok. the apps quite sometimes but that's it.
What if: Apple and Samsung merged companies to become Sampple? Imagine Apple's build quality with Samsung's Camera and Super AMOLED Technology.
I'm gong to get it next week but my plans may take a while to get to phone but I'm still exited for this phone...
I do miss my iphone 4s thinking on getting another iphone but still keep my sg4s
Apple should add a dedicated shutter button. I also wish they'd add a bigger screen, micro-sd card slot and removable battery.
I am so lost over which one to buy! the 5S has the best build quality hands down, but I'm an android and google stuff user, the sony Z1 is the best spec wise, but it's screen kinda sucks and the htc one is a good back up, but sucks in the spec department! this is very frustrating!

Reportedly it took a German group of security researchers two (!) days to breach the fingerprint system. That leaves me in doubt about its efficacy.
Right, because the expanded screen size on the 5S made it look different from the 5... Oh wait, that never happened, only from S3-S4. Whoops
no review of airdrop :(
That's definitely wrong!
For ex: you can find HTC HD2 with Jelly Bean.
man they really need to go up to at least a 4.5 screen..shit looks so cumbersome to use...
used htc one x, gs3 and gs4 and the biggest issue i have with it is the fluidity even though you say android has caught up.. i think it hasnt.. however most of the other features are way better in the gs4 now..
Do you know how many phones Google would sale if there were only two androids ?!
My comment was on PHONES and the sales they made. Nothing about tablets or any other devices. Mainly on the hype over outselling.
I really liked how each time I bought a nexus 4 or a gs3 I catch viruses on it :)
All I can say after watching this is that I'm very happy I chose a Nexus 4 instead of the iPhone! Such a better deal!
The thing is, the reason the 5s is faster is NOT cuz of the processor. It is the display resolution.
