They usually conform also her outfits. Other girls wear glitz or leather. She didn't need gimmicks that a lot of judges need to use to get votes or pass in the polls. Honestly one of the only perfectly talented individuals who got by on only talent and no pandering sad stories or other audience shit besides her attitude.
Katy was a surprisingly good coach for her. I remember the X Factor seasons where Demi Lovato was a coach, and even though she’s a good singer, she was a terrible coach, making terrible song choices and ruining some contestants confidence. Katy built her people up and let them have creative agency

I don't watch the show regularly (no cable) but I notice the show now longer tries so hard to change the appearance of performers, they glam them up a little but not as extreme as they used to. I love they let the performers let their true personalities and talent shine rather than focus so much on what they wear or what they look like. She is gorgeous, inside and out and so talented! Love her energy! The next Kelly Clarkson. I just started watching her show on RUclips and she had the idol judges back. Simon mentioned how true Kelly has stayed to her roots and I think this woman has the same potential. She OWNS it. Unique, quirky, beautiful, amazing. Wishing her the best!

I auditioned for the voice and had a friend audition for american idol. You go through a ton of auditions with producers before you even sit in front of the celebrity judges. At some stage they find out about you like your story and then decide if you move on to the "big audition". They obviously purposefully choose bad singers to go through to keep the illusion up that it's all on the spot right there. (Sometimes they specifically ask people to be as bad as possible, someone wrote a blog on this once but I dont remember who!) So that's how the judges know what to ask if they want to for instance spotlight a contestant who writes their own music.
^^^^ this explains it well. shows like these all have a bunch of preliminary auditions so they can put the best people on the show for TV. they’ve started being more open about this recently, i remember an audition where a contestant mentioned his “first” audition for the season
